Slackware :: Slapt-get Slow When Downloading / High It?
Nov 30, 2010
I am a newbie regarding the Slackware, though i have some millage on Ubuntu. Anyway, i have Slackware 13.1 and slapt-get is really, really slow when downloading packages, even when i do slapt-get -update the slowness is just killing me
The second question is somewhat different. How can i view dependencies on which a particular application is depended?

I'm sitting at work and wondering if Synaptic package manager could be used with slapt-get on Slackware since it's based on apt-get anyway. I haven't researched this, but I wonder if anyone out there has. I'm thinking that Synaptic looks for .deb packages but it would be interesting if one could make it work. The Gslapt/slapt-get combo works just fine for me as far as a GUI alternative, but apparently only works with .tgz or .txz. Or does it?
It would be interesting if one could install .deb packages because it would open up a whole lot repositories to Slackware including the Ubuntu repos. Don't get me wrong, I like compiling from source but nothing drives me crazier than finding some piece of software I like that ends up needing a million Gnome dependencies. I can definitely appreciate the reasons why Gnome was dropped from Slackware!

I noticed that slapt-get excludes a lot of package titles based on aaa, glibc, and kernel. I've been wondering why, and haven't been able to find any definitive answers... Anyone here have any ideas on why that is? My Slackware installation is currently kernel 2.6.29.6 (I think) and the newest available on the official repositories is 2.6.32.5 (or something like that).
When I put in slapt-get --upgrade it spits out about 15 packages that are excluded that it won't upgrade. Now, I know I can remove the exclusions by editing the slapt-get configuration file, but I don't want to if it's going to screw something up. So my question is: Is there a reason those are excluded? Is it unsafe to upgrade the kernel with slapt-get?

I get an error when running slapt-get. The error is: "slapt-get: error while loading shared libraries: libsas.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory".
I've booted the Slackware disk # 1 and unchecked everything except the libraries category and installed them. I rebooted and it still says this. I get this same error before I put the disk in and rebooted to install ALL libraries. I really need help. BTW, I can't load KDE.I found a pkg manager already installed called "slackpkg". But I really need help on this library issue!! I uninstalled it (slapt-get) anyway, so forget that!

I've stopped the download several times already due to it being so slow. I resumed the downloading at file 1991 (out of 2046 files....) but it's not budging from there. Are there really so many downloads going on today it is making it hard to download?

I've been having a problem in Ubuntu 9.10 recently where starting about 2 minutes after startup my computer slows down and becomes unresponsive. I believe the problem is associated with a high IOWait because I have the system monitor applet on my Gnome Panel and it displays 100% IOWait every time my system starts to slow down.
I have tried booting into other kernel version and the problem persists. I don't really know what IOWait is or how to diagnose this problem further. I've looked around online and it seems like you have to find a specific process that is causing the IOWait, but I don't understand how to go about doing that.

I've been using Ubuntu consistently for about three days now. I really, really love the interface and how everything works and all that, but I've been having a couple of weird problems with speed.
Graphics things seem to work really well. When I go into the overview of all my workspaces, it's instant and looks great. The problem is when I open and use some applications.
For example, when I open up the software center, it takes longer than it did the first time to start up. Also, when I drag windows off from being maximized, it takes literally about five seconds for it to show up as being dragged around by my mouse.
When I look at the system monitor, about 20% of my CPU cores are constantly being used. That's 20% each. I have a 3-core CPU, could that be the problem?
Another example: when I went to ..... just now, it would take a second for any volume changes in the video to register.
And I also have smooth scrolling in firefox, but it's very unresponsive now. It's slow as all hell. Even notifications are showing up more slowly.
So, what's the deal? What could I have done wrong?
CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 2.8Ghz
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 4860 1gb
RAM: 4gb
One more thing: I have really bad screen tearing when I try to move windows around, as if there isn't any vsync on. Where can I turn it on or fix this?
I'm still pretty new to Ubuntu and Linux, but I'm an advanced computer user. Since I feel linux is killing my CPU I think I'm going to boot back into Windows 7 for now, but if I can fix this problem I think I want to keep Ubuntu as my main OS after this, having Windows for games, unless I can get Wine to work right with them.

I've just noticed that unrar is suddenly taking minutes to extract instead of seconds.
I can remember if its recently been updated, but I've uninstalled and reinstalled it and the version is: unrar.x86_64 0:3.7.8-3.fc10
I've found a few Ubuntu posts about it on Google, but in true Ubuntu fashion nobody has any answers!
What's odd is that when I unrar a file from (Nautilus or "unrar x *.rar") it takes say 4mins, then if I do it again it takes 15secs, like as if its caching somewhere.

I'm having issues playing HD videos ( some with 720p level, much more apparent with 1080p level one) The video appears to slow then becomes choppy, becoming de synced from the audio that carries on as normal. This occurs with both VLC player and XBMC, though the latter is better. My specs: Fedora 12 3.2 Ghz P4 processor 1Gig ram Radeon 9800 xt gfx card (I couldn't get the 9.3 ati driver to work)

I was browsing my folder with lots of images, after finished i close nautilus and i notice that my computer became slow, so i'll check it with system monitor and had found that nautilus are using almost 100mb of ram (opening 4 tabs). I'm not sure if this was normal or not because i try to reopen the same folder with pcmanfm and it only consumes less than 20mb of ram (opening 4 tabs).
here's the screenshot from system monitor .

For some reason after I close firefox , firefox-bin keeps running and it eats more cpu than when firefox was open, a lot more. Same thing with seamonkey, seamonkey-bin keeps running after it is closed.
Attached are two pictures ,
1) While firefox is running: notice the low CPU usage
2) Firefox closed, CPU is almost 50%

Is there an easy way to get all of the multilib files from [URL]? I've tried:
1.) wget - won't use wildcards on an http server, and trying to get the whole folder just gets me index.html
2.) ftp - it's not an ftp server and I can't login anonymously via gftp. I wasn't expecting this to work, it was just something else to try.
3.) rsync - If this could work, I may not be using the right syntax. I tried (-n for a dry run first):
Code:
rsync -avn [URL]
And it just sat there doing nothing until I hit ctl-c.
Obviously I could download each file from my web browser but I figured there had to be a more elegant Unix-y way without all the clicky-clicky. Are the files hosted on an ftp server anywhere?

My laptop has a very high consumption when running on idle (I mean nothing that write on the disk or video etc..). I read on lenovo forums that people could get 10-12W and I can hardly get lower than 20W. My cpufreq is set to powersave and my cpus are always at the lowest scale.
configure my laptop to save some power. It used to last almost 7h on battery (sadly I don't remember the consumption) on Ubuntu and now it can barely last more than 3h with slackware.
My config is:
T400 intel duo core 3,06ghz
14.1" TFT display with 1440x900 (WXGA+) resolution with LED backlight
Switchable Graphics with Intel GMA 4500MHD and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 (256 MB)
