I think it's the HDA Intel anyway. In alsaconf it comes up with, 'hda-intel Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller', and I select that one. When I do, 'aplay /home/emor/sample.wav' it says it's playing but I don't here any audio. I've tried various configurations on both the alsamixer and the graphical XFCE sound mixer, and neither have really done anything. [URL]...

I thought it was a driver issue, but after messing around with the ALSA mixer a lot, it turned out that when I enabled headphones(or disabled, honestly not sure) that my headphones worked, and when I took them out the speakers worked. Then when I rebooted for whatever reason, only the speakers(built-in) worked. Really, I'm not sure why this is.
When I got them to work there was a switch for the headphones in the graphical mixer(which is what I used, not the ncurses[?] ALSA thing), but I can't seem to find that anymore. It's not a major issue, it just puts me off watching videos and listening to music because my laptop speakers are really low quality. I'd go out to buy a pair of external speakers, but obviously with the audio jack not working, this could be problematic.
I guess I could buy USB external speakers but then the probability of Slackware having pre-installed audio drivers for a cheap generic brand of speakers is so low it doesn't justify the effort of going and buying some, nor the money that would be spent. Willing to enter any commands/w.e. I'll be on Slackware all the time 'cause I need a Linux system right now.
I was just given a computer from a coworker and installed the latest Slackware version on it. I then installed Gnome Slackbuild and installed the Nvidia driver.I've run alsaconf and it seems to run fine without any errors and unmuted all the channels in alsamixer.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have been using Slackware64 newly installed to an external USB drive to get used to KDE4 and whatnot as I currently run Slackware 12.0. It's been very good and I now feel a little alienated when I reboot to Slackware 12 and KDE 3. There is an ongoing problem though. My machine has a front mounted jack socket for headphones which cuts off the feed to my external speakers as it should. When ever I plug in my headphones the volume coming through them rapidly drops off to nothing, If I then unplug them no sound comes back out through the external speakers. It could be that they are being reinstated when I unplug the headphones but the sound level has dropped to zero - as it has in the headphones. The machine has an on board Intel sound device reported like this :

This is a real pain and the only solution seems to be to reboot. This not only happens when in KDE but also if I run "speaker-test" as a test from the CLI as well.
I seem to have problems with sound on a ICH7 chip. the motherboard is an ASUS P5LD2-SE
The kernel is custom, but SND_HDA_* is included. and generally the sound device is identified properly.

i did a recent install of slackware 13.1 in my toshiba nb200 netbook and everything is running good, except the sound. i can listen to only one audio stream from one software. if videos (firefox) is playing a video, audacious won't play, and vice-versa. i did some research but i didn't find a solution for this problem.

I have a toshiba netbook, and I'm running linux slackware 13.The sound card is an HDA intel.So far I've ran alsaconf and configured the above mentioned sound card. I've also gone into the alsamixer and unmuted everything and turn the volume up.I get absolutely no audio.

This laptop has serious overheating issues. I installed the sensor applet and the fans are not coming on, even when the core temp exceeds 167(f). The base of the laptop becomes hot enough to fry an egg on.
I'd like to find a way to make the fans come on in an automated fashion (without having to do it at the command line each time I want them to come on). I'd even be happy with them on all the time if that will resolve the issue, as the laptop overheats until shut down / freeze every time I use it.
I wasnt sure where to put this, since both of my boxes are slackware i posted it here. I am having ssh issues, im going from a 64 bit slackware 13.37 to 32 slackware 13.1. Now I can connect from the 64bit box with windowsxp pro using putty, to the 32 bit slackware box, but i get an error on the slackware 64 bit which says no route to host. It is the same computer, host name is the same and router ipaddress is the same on either windows or slackware boot. It isnt a fire wall, as i had none, until a couple minutes ago, of which i still get the same error. Is there something i am required to do to set up ssh on this box. Oh just for the record, I cannot connect to the 32 bit slackware box with my macbook pro either.

First macbook. I've managed to get everything I really need running except sound. I'm 5-year ubuntu user so if anyone asks for any system info I'll probably be able to manage it. This is the only sound-related entry I could find in lspci.

I just want to share that I got stereo sound on my machine by adding `options snd-hda-intel model=mbp55' to the end of `/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf' and rebooting. I didn't see a solution anywhere else. I haven't done extensive testing, I just know that now I have sound coming out both speakers (and headphone speakers) at balanced volume levels.

I manged to have it working fine in Ubuntu 9.04 but the sound settings in gnome have changed too much and I can no longer reconfigure the sound system to work as before. For now I can only hear music through the internal speaker(s) while previously with 9.04 I was able to use the built-in audio jack and use my external speakers. What was even better was that I was able to toggle the between the built-in speakers and the external speakers by plugin/unplugin the speakers jack. Today all of this nice features are gone. What's the proper way for configuring sound with pulseaudio? Should I disable pulseaudio?

Im having an odd problem with an installation of 10.04 on my Macbook (the white one with firewire, dunno which generation). Sound works fine from built-in speakers, but when i plug in headphones i have no sound at all..
The levels in alsamixer are all fine, so no problem there..
One of the left speaker on my macbook 2,1 has no sound. The channel is not muted in alsamixer. If you go into sound preferences and change the card to a surround 4.0. The both the front and rear right speakers work. Front is higher sound (tweeter) rear is the lower sounds. (mid-sub) however on the left side the left front does nothing. to the naked ear you can tell not as much sound is coming out of the left side. one speaker is not functioning. is there a fix for this?

On the macbook pro 6,1 it gets issued IRQ 19 and loads sata_sil24 and ata_piix correctly, however on the 5,1 and 5,2 macbook pro it only loads sata_sil24 and gets IRQ 24. Is there anyway to specify the IRQ assigned to the device via the kernel (is it an IRQ conflict or device not working on IRQ24)? MacBook Pro uses an EFI so not traditional bios where I can set irqs. I know the hardware is OK because I tried it in Windows (dual booting).

I had this problem years ago when I last installed linux on here. I solved it then and I thought the solution was unchecking "external amplifier" in alsamixer.
I believe my sound card (Intel 82801DB-ICH4) is detected and the appropriate driver loaded (snd_intel8x0) however, even running speaker-test produces no sound (no error either).
I've read that the intel hda have a model parameter found by greping for codec in /proc/asound/card? but I can't find any information about what codec is used in any path like that. Is there a model parameter for this card too? I'm on a philips freeline X10 laptop.
I ran alsaconf and nothing seemed to change. I tried alsactl init but the command init wasn't found, I suppose that must only be in newer releases. I installed libesd-alsa0 to replace libesd0 but that didn't help (should I revert this file? libesd0 says it's for oss). I also appended "options snd_intel8x0 index=0" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base which got the card registered as the first device.

I get no sound with kernel 2.6.30-2-686 or 2.6.32-5-686. Works fine in 2.6.26-2-686. Card is found, it accepts streams but plays nothing to either internal speakers or headphones.
