Slackware :: External HD Probably Shutting Down After Prolonged Periods Of Inactivity
Jun 2, 2010
I have a Western digital HD connected through external SATA connection to a slack11 server.
After prolonged periods of inactivity i see that i can't access the disk any longer. There is a permanent reference for the disk in fstab, and there is still a reference of the disk in mtab, too...
However, the /dev/sd* device is gone, so i can't access the disk.
Now if i'm next to the server, i know i can umount, unplug and re-plug the disk and i'll mount and again and be on my way...BUT what if 'm not close to the server?
Is there a remote way to make udev (or otherwise) re-sense the existence of the disk, so that the disk will have a /dev/ reference again?

I would like to allow the auto-log off feature either an extended inactivity time or to disable inactivity-logouts.
I use my PC strictly at home, and have no security issues. I've set my username to no-password so that I just click [twice] to log back on. But I must do that to see the screen display - say to see what's playing on Pandora.
Can I set the auto-logout-time somewhere or disable the function?

I got this 1Tb Toshiba external about a month ago, and recently I started really using it to share lots of media files. What I've noticed is that it turns itself off after a few minutes of inactivity -- I researched this issue across the internet, and found that it's between 5 and 30 minutes, depending on who's writing about it.
I found a person who posted a DOS batch file, which (i think) continuously accesses the drive as long as the batch file is running. I'd like to find a way to do that in linux. could someone point me in the right direction?
i took a few minutes to plan it out... i think i need a loop that will access the drive (or do something to it, at least) once every minute until i close the script. I'd also like a message box that shows up that says something like "while this is open, your HDD is being accessed".

My laptop's built-in LCD turns itself off early in bootup regardless of the OS/distro or how long it's been running -- and sure enough, 14's live CD turns off its external LCD as well. Kinda hard to install when I can't see what I'm doing, you know? So, I don't suppose anybody knows how I could keep the live CD and/or initial install from turning the external off, so I can get the chance to change the appropriate setting? I've searched the forums, but haven't seen any way to circumvent it.

Slackware 13.1, on a Dell... Opliplex GX260... running XFCE4, as root. Stuff runs fine. However, the monitor goes to powersave mode after 10 minutes of inactivity. I've turned off power management in the kernel, in the app., have checked the xorg.conf, checked everywhere I can think of, can't find where this is being set. how I can turn this off?

Or is this a gnome bug

We have two types of servers RHEL5 and RHEL4 as well as Fedora 11 desktops.
After a period of inactivity, trying to exit from "su - <username>" causes the system to hang for about 10 minutes. It takes that long before the prompt comes back. Here are a few items that noticed as I have tried to trouble shoot this problem. The prompt always comes back if you wait long enough It only happens on RHEL 5. RHEL4 and Fedora 11 are unaffected It does not appear to matter what other software is running. Some boxes have databases, others do not It happens to boxes in run level 3 as well as boxes in run level 5 It does not matter if logging in from the console (tty) or from ssh (pts). Both types of logins produce the same result.
It does not matter if the account is an LDAP or a local account. It takes between 30 min and 1 hour of inactivity before the problem occurs Other sessions on the box are completely unaffected. Once hung, I can still log in with a different session without a problem top shows no load while session is hung there are no messages in /var/log/messages, /var/log/secure, /var/log/audit/audit.log or in dmesg if a session is killed, finger shows that it is still logged in a putty log shows that the server is still sending "keep alives" to putty while the session is hung Only su is affected. There is no problem logging out of the box from the initial login account. what I can try in order to trouble shoot this?

Running openSUSE 11.2 with Gnome. After a relatively short period of time, screen goes blank, and when I click on it, I get presented with password prompt, and when I enter it, I'm back where I left off. I don't see how to change this, and all the time I've spent so far in YaST trying to find out where this setting is kept and how to change it has been wasted effort. So now I'm asking: how do you change this to something a little more reasonable?
I'm taking an online SuSE LINUX class, and as they cover different topics, I jump over to the Linux system (which I have running in a vm under VMWare server on W2K3) and try stuff out, and most of the time I have to enter my password because I was away too long.

I've spent two whole days trying to get this to work and I believe I may be on the verge of insanity.
In any event, my goal is to have Slackware 13.0 be installed on an external USB drive and for any computer I use to be able to boot from that USB drive and load Linux.
I used fdisk to completely repartition the external hard drive making the first partition for '/' and toggling the boot flag on it.
I installed lilo on the USB drive, rebooted, disabled the internal hard drive, and instructed the computer to boot from USB.
"No boot options available."
I assumed there was a problem with the MBR. I booted into Slackware setup, performed a lilo -mbr on the external hard drive. Rebooted.
Still "No boot options available."
What could possibly be wrong? Yes, my computer does support booting from USB.
Do all hard drives have MBR's? Does fdisk overwrite the MBR when you partition it? If it does, do I have to ignore the first 1MB when I partition my disk so that lilo can boot from it? I remember having to do similar with 'parted' when I had to format a flash drive for being bootable.
The other problem I have is that the /dev/sda can change. Just because a USB drive is /dev/sda today doesn't mean it won't be /dev/sdb tomorrow. Is it even possible to have a boot loader load correctly, considering that you hard code the device name into the /etc/lilo.conf? I was thinking of using grub to manually choose where to boot at load, but that doesn't seem to be an option as grub looks like (i may be mistaken) it tries to find a root and then looks for the grub config info in that drive. I also don't think that grub loads USB drivers at runtime, nor do I think lilo does either, which makes me wonder even more if it's remotely possible.

I put a larger drive in my netbook and stuck the old in an external USB enclosure so I could use it for backups. It had three partitions on it, ntfs and linux so I deleted all the partitions and created one big linux partition. Every time I write and exit fdisk the removable disk utility in KDE pops up and says ntfs drive. If I ignore it and try to formatit wants to use ntfs, if I fsck.ext3 it saysThe superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2filesystem. If the deviceis valid and it really contains an ext2filesystem (and not swap or ufs or something else), then the superblockis corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock:e2fsck -b 8193 <device>2fsck -b 8193 doesn't work either. It seems like its caching something, I can print the partition table and see the one linux partition I created.
Code:
Disk /dev/sdb: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders

Yesterday, I bought a 1TB WD Passport, for backup and storage. It uses NTFS, and I've had no problems manually mounting and moving files to and from it from root. However, I don't like having to be root to in any way modify the data on the drive. In order to avoid this I decided to create a line in fstab that would allow permissions to the user, so I added this to my fstab:
Code:
/dev/sdb1/mnt/external ntfs defaults,
noauto, noexec, user, uid=1000, gid=users, umask=0022, nls=utf8 0 0
This allows me to mount, unmount, and peruse the external HDD - however, if this is active, neither the user NOR root have permission to make any changes. The HDD acts as read only, even though there is no "ro" option on my fstab.

My bluetooth devices disconnect after a period of inactivity (not sure exactly how long). They're being connected with:
sudo hidd --connect
And I've made no edits to any bluetooth related system files so it should be default settings throughout. I would like them to stay connected indefinitely and it would be even better if they would stay connected through reboots.

Under Karmic the screen used to go into a sleep status but it only needed a touch of the mouse in order to come back....

Running Ubuntu 10.10 within virtualbox on ubuntu 9.10. Noticed an odd item that was once an peculiar and has now become an annoyance. If I leave my computer for, say 5 minutes, and I bring virtualbox back up, i am presented with a login screen. However, i can't login as my keyboard does not work. Mouse works fine. Can't login, so I have to close out.
I looked at my power management settings within 10.10 and everything is off. no power saving. Ubuntu 9.10 has power management, but these do not appear to affect virtualbox. I have a 15 minute monitor turnoff, with disks running until 2 hours. If I leave for 5 minutes, monitor is on, but Ubuntu 10.10 within virtualbox wants a login.

We have a NAS application which can be accessed by both HTTP and HTTPS connections.
The issue we are facing is that the tcp server instance that initiates the HTTP access dies after a few hours of inactivity(the NAS application was kept idle for around 10 hours). However, the tcpserver that launches HTTPS connections remained running. So the connection failed through HTTP access but the connection succeeded through HTTPS access.
The converse has also been observed where the tcpserver for HTTPS is dead but tcpserver for HTTP is running.
The version of tcpserver that we are using here is ucspi-tcp-0.88.tar.gz.
I have the following queries:
a)Has anyone faced the same problem before?
b)Is it an issue with this package version of tcpserver ?
c)Will upgrading to newer versions of tcpserver bail me out of the issue?
d)Also, could anyone let me know what are the possible causes for the tcpserver to die ?

How could I get the Slackware Linux distro on my external HDD booted up from my notebook? I'm using a notebook bought in 2006, the configuration is 60GB HDD, 940gml chip, 2GB memory, 1.6GHz Celeron-D CPU. I bought a USB2.0 3.5inch 1TB "Seagate Expansion External Drive". The file system of the only partition on it is NTFS. I installed Grub MBR on the external HDD using grubinst then copy the grldr, grub.exe and menu.lst to it, added Slax to the only partition, then I could get Slax booting up. However, the external HDD could only get booting up when my notebook is first power on; if I reboot it, the external HDD would auto turn off and on when sef-checking and cannot be shown in the Esc boot menu. I tried to install Slackware 13.1 to the external HDD successfully but failed to boot. I used WinPM to resize the primary partition to make about 60GB space at the end of the disk for Linux distro.
I booted the Slackware USB image from Grub4DOS, and ran cfdisk to make partitions from the 60GB space for Linux, ran setup to install Slackware. Then at the step of the lilo bootloader configure, if I select to install the lilo in MBR, it would fail to boot, displaying "L..."; if I select to install the lilo in the super block of the "root" partition then boot from grub, it would fail too, because I found that there is no way to mount the Linux partitions of the external HDD in the grub cmd line. When I say "root (hd0,4)", it would halt without any prompt. If I say "root (hd0," then press the Tab key, instead of listing the partitions on hd0, it would halt too. If I set the root partition of the Linux install as the second primary partition and install Slackware distro to it, the grub would show error either saying it cannot recorgnize the ext4 file system(ext4 fs, sda2) or unable to mount selected partition(ext2 fs).

My wife takes her laptop on her travels but recently has been getting a connection refused when attempting to connect to our home server. The only reason I believe this is occurring is because of iptables blocking certain IP addresses which I don't want to delete for SPAM prevention.
What configuration what be both secure and relatively straight forward. Initially configured mac filtering but then realised this would not be appropriate under these circumstances..
Also there is no specific logging in either postfix or dovecot about connection refused.

I've paired a bluetooth keyboard and mouse with my machine using the Gnome bluetooth wizard and the keyboard and mouse work fine. Then, if I let the computer sit for a few hours and then try to use the keyboard or mouse, nothing happens. When paired with my windows machine, and I start using the keyboard and mouse after a hour or two, the keyboard takes a second or two to start working again. I suspect that it turns itself off, and then has to reconnect, and that in Linux, the reconnection isn't working properly. I've found other instances on the forums of people with the same symptoms, but never any clear answers. Does anyone know what's going on?

How can I control this feature so that I'm not having to constantly login every time I turn around? I've searched everywhere and can't find a solution.

gnome power manager judges the system inactivity by the CPU usage (as well as the input device usage). In other words, it goes to sleep mode when the CPU usage is lower than 5 % for dozens of minutes set by a user. I'm just wondering the reason why 5 % of the CPU usage. Isn't it possible for user processes to be working with under 5 % of the CPU usage?
