I'm using Lucid and after a few minutes of inactivity the system goes into the Lock Screen status also available under the shut down icon. now I don't like the screen to be blocked mainly cause when I get back I've to type again my password everytime. Under Karmic the screen used to go into a sleep status but it only needed a touch of the mouse in order to come back....

I checked power management settings and all power saving options are set to off.The screen says Checking battery state comes for a while... and then black screen with stripes comes. View 9 Replies View RelatedI got this 1Tb Toshiba external about a month ago, and recently I started really using it to share lots of media files. What I've noticed is that it turns itself off after a few minutes of inactivity -- I researched this issue across the internet, and found that it's between 5 and 30 minutes, depending on who's writing about it.
I found a person who posted a DOS batch file, which (i think) continuously accesses the drive as long as the batch file is running. I'd like to find a way to do that in linux. could someone point me in the right direction?
i took a few minutes to plan it out... i think i need a loop that will access the drive (or do something to it, at least) once every minute until i close the script. I'd also like a message box that shows up that says something like "while this is open, your HDD is being accessed".
Slackware 13.1, on a Dell... Opliplex GX260... running XFCE4, as root. Stuff runs fine. However, the monitor goes to powersave mode after 10 minutes of inactivity. I've turned off power management in the kernel, in the app., have checked the xorg.conf, checked everywhere I can think of, can't find where this is being set. how I can turn this off?

Finally took the plunge to Karmic, and have had major instability problems. I cannot trace them to any particular program I am using. At first it seemed related to power management, since it would lock up every time it had a period of extended inactivity. I have disabled ACPI in my BIOS (I think), and any power management settings I could find in gnome to try to troubleshoot. That seems to have helped, but it still happens semi-regularly, sometimes when I am in the middle of using it. I have tried checking logs and googled anything that seemed important. ie a message in kern.log reads: Clocksource tsc unstable
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Fedora 12 on an Acer Aspire One with KDE. The built-in wireless works without a problem EVERYWHERE except at work. It's a shared wireless connection using WPA/WPA2 security.I can connect but it's "hit-and-miss" if I can do anything with it. Somedays it works well for a few minutes then has a period of inactivity - then slow - randomly receives...It worked flawlessly when the computer was running Windows7 no one else has connectivity issues but I'm the only one using Linux.

I use my PC strictly at home, and have no security issues. I've set my username to no-password so that I just click [twice] to log back on. But I must do that to see the screen display - say to see what's playing on Pandora.
Can I set the auto-logout-time somewhere or disable the function?
I have experienced that the button in my main menu "Lock Screen" does nothing, so I can not lock my screen. What could be the problem? Is there any command in terminal what I could write, so I can see is there an error output or something?
I am using Ubuntu 9.10, GNOME.
When I hit Alt+Ctrl+L my system is starting the ScreenSaver but not locking the screen. The keybinding is correctly set. This is happening in only root account but in another user account it works perfect !

It's been happening when I use Oracle VM Virtualbox to watch movies on Netflix.I have all the setting on my computer so it doesn't dim the screen at all, so I don't know what to do now. What happens is that I resorted to deleting my .kde directory after my kid destroyed my profile where title bar, menu, konsole get broken. After deleting, I login again thus regenerating the .kde directory. To avoid my kid from messing my desktop, I tried to lock it. It does not lock.
It just need a KDE full restart perhaps since when I login the other day, it now works.
I'm updated to Slackware current for almost a month already and have not played a lot on KDE desktop (busy programming stuff).
However, on day I tried to lock the desktop in KDE to avoid the kid from destroying my cool desktop setting, but it didn't lock. Cool, so I tried screen saver and add an option to lock the screen.
When I test screen saver, it displays. But when I wait for 1 minute(I set it that way), it doesn't fire up. Not even after 15 minutes which I think the default.
It usually work before (several months ago) using the lower version of KDE. It is just last Saturday that I noticed it.
I tried to dig the profile management but I could not find anything relevant there.
I am trying to install ubuntu 10.04 on notebook, after choosing install, ubuntu starts after about 10 minutes with log screen, but I don't know logging parameters. Also the same with ubuntu 9.10. Hardware problem?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have been having an issue with my screen blanking out after a few minutes (number of minutes unknown), since I reinstalled Fedora 12 (KDE) a couple of weeks ago. I have tried, yes, a lot of things to try to set it so that it doesn't blank out, to no avail. I have spent a lot of time on the Fedora forum seeking resolution, with a variety of suggestions, all to no avail. I went into System Settings > Power Control, and fooled with things around there and they didn't work. I tried xset and dpms and shutting them off. Still no cigar.

I'm having problems with BBC iPlayer though. When I watch in full screen mode, it only lasts for 10 minutes then reverts back to the Firefox browser.
I have a Dell Vostro 200. Have been running Ubuntu on it for 18 months - no probs. Recently it became very slow to boot. 5-10 minutes before Ubuntu startup screen appears. Have installed Ubuntu 10.10 (on a reformatted hard drive) today. No change. It's fairly certain to be a hardware problem but I don't know where to start.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've been unable to resolve this problem for the past weeks and have come as far as I can trying to fix it on my own. I have a fresh install of 11.04 on a Shuttle ST20G5 with a Radeon Xpress 200g chipset. After 5-10 minutes of usage in X, it freezes solid (no response to alt-sysreq) and displays a white screen (sometimes with a pattern). I believe it's a kernel issue.
Things I've tried but still resulted in crashes:
- Switching to VESA graphics
- Running failsafe / Recovery Console X
- Downgrading X server to 2.09
- Running latest X server via ppa (at least, I think I did this. Maybe I didn't)
- Upgrading kernel to 2.6.39-0 via ppa
- Running the live cd
I get no warnings or errors of note in xsession-errors or kern.log
I have not been able to catch the error or obtain any troubleshooting info. When it crashes, it just crashes.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have the problem (11.3) that the screen is blanked after 10 minutes (console and KDE). After some searching, I found out, it is a kernel "feature". Since it is a server, which should display network status permanently on screen this behavior is fatal.
I have tried:
- switch of power features vie Grub kernel param: apm=off, powersaved=off
- in kde via screensaver options
- in term "setterm -blank 0"
Sometimes after I enter my password after the screensaver has locked the screen, it will not take my password (even though entered correctly). It seems to lock up. After about 2 mins it says something about a time-out (wish I could do screencaps). Then it will reset and have a gray window the same size as the password input window but on the upper portion of the screen, and a password entry window as normal, but in the lower part of the screen. This time, it accepts the password and logs me in.This is a 2-part post.First, how to bypass having to wait for the timeout (for whatever is timing out).The second is to see if anyone knows an answer to the problem and a fix.After it freezes, hold CTRL-ALT and tap F1.This will taking you to a virtual terminal. I upgraded to latest 10.04 live x64 desktop today. Clean, fresh install.Before I was using 9.04 and had the same issue at first.I don't want the password lock screen when resuming from suspend.I disabled everything, lock in screensaver settings, all lock entries in gconf-editor. I also tried setting LOCK_SCREEN in /etc/default/acpi-support to false.Nothing helps Is this maybe a bug, since it's still beta? I don't know what else to do
