Networking :: TCP Server Dies After Few Hours Of Inactivity ?
Jan 15, 2010
We have a NAS application which can be accessed by both HTTP and HTTPS connections.
The issue we are facing is that the tcp server instance that initiates the HTTP access dies after a few hours of inactivity(the NAS application was kept idle for around 10 hours). However, the tcpserver that launches HTTPS connections remained running. So the connection failed through HTTP access but the connection succeeded through HTTPS access.
The converse has also been observed where the tcpserver for HTTPS is dead but tcpserver for HTTP is running.
The version of tcpserver that we are using here is ucspi-tcp-0.88.tar.gz.
I have the following queries:
a)Has anyone faced the same problem before?
b)Is it an issue with this package version of tcpserver ?
c)Will upgrading to newer versions of tcpserver bail me out of the issue?
d)Also, could anyone let me know what are the possible causes for the tcpserver to die ?

I'm having a really weird, annoying problem: approximately every 10 hours, like clockwork, my internet connection stops working. (Last time I had the presence of mind to check the uptime: it was 9 hours 48 minutes; this was maybe 5-10 minutes after it happened). My existing connections (IRC, etc.) keep working fine, I can access my home router's configuration page, and `ping` still works, but otherwise new connections invariably time out (whether it's a web browser, git/subversion, or whatever). I have found no solution to this other than rebooting.

I would like to allow the auto-log off feature either an extended inactivity time or to disable inactivity-logouts.
I use my PC strictly at home, and have no security issues. I've set my username to no-password so that I just click [twice] to log back on. But I must do that to see the screen display - say to see what's playing on Pandora.
Can I set the auto-logout-time somewhere or disable the function?

Am trying to set up a new system but am getting some strange behavoir. I've administered an Irix system before. I have opensuse 11.3 installed with gnome running. When i enter a bad user id in the windows login screen, the bad authentication causes the x window manager to crash and leaves the system in the ascii terminal mode login. I then have to login as root and do an init 3 , then init 5 to get the x server started again an get the windows login started. Has any one seen this behavior before and how can i fix this. Been hunting through /etc/X11/xdm to see what startup scripts could be causing this.

We have 2 servers, 1 is the webserver and the other is the Mysql server.
When transfering a 2GB file from the webserver to the Mysql server.
The webserver's connection to the mysql DB server dies completely.
Need to restart the MYSQL process in order for it to come back online.
During this connection downtime, when using phpmyadmin on the mysql server shows no problem running queries etc.

I have two servers, both running Ubuntu 11.04 Server. One is a web server, running only a LAMP stack and openssh-server. The other is running server daemons for TeamSpeak and Minecraft. Today, the game server just went down. I can access the LAN by using SSH to connect to the web server, and ping it from there. However, it won't respond to SSH or anything else. The server is a few kilometers from here, so I will be going there tomorrow.
This happened once before, probably about a month ago or something. That time, the web server was running just fine, but the game server was powered off. I thought there had been a power disruption, because when I checked the BIOS settings of the game server, it wasn't set to resume after AC power loss. The web server was set to do this, so it made sense that it would be up and running again after a brief power loss. There were also some news reports about power disruptions in my area.
The thing is, I changed the BIOS settings of the game server to make sure this wouldn't happen again. When I go there tomorrow, I will bring the server back up. However, I would like to know what caused this so that I may prevent it from occurring again. Is there a logfile or something that I can check tomorrow to find the problem?

Got a Zimbra server FOSS edition running on CentOS5.5. Everything was running fine until couple of days just found out that web administration interface just does not give the proper status. Web console says that none of the services are running which infact is not true. Only service that is not running is logger. This is the zmcontrol status output
Code:
antispam Running
antivirus Running
imapproxy Running
ldap Running
[code]....
Just the logger service is not running all the others are. But web admin interface shows all are stopped. Also it can be seen that zmlogswatchctl is not running. Starting it manually does not do any good. It does not start and it dies out by itself.I tried to google and found a couple of bugs related to logger and web interface but those were old and should have been done in this version 6.

I updated my CentOS 5 box recently. But after then my Apache can no longer work; every time I try to start apache, it says started OK but then dies immediately and no error message at all. When I tried 'apachectl restartI', it says apache not running. It has been running fine before the update. I've looked at /var/log/httpd.log but there is not any message about my problem.

I don't want to 'spam', (I had started a first thread about this some time ago), but I'm (still) experiencing problems with my internet: I can use the internet (I am connected through a simple switch) for some time, that is: surf the internet (in firefox) and download using vuze (azureus) but after some time, the internet connection 'dies' (downloadspeeds jump to 0b/s and I am not able to surf to any site in firefox). When that happens, the only 'solution' to this is restarting my pc.
I first experienced this when using ubuntu 10.04, so I thought that it was a 10.04 issue. I knew that when I had ubuntu 9.10 (karmic koala) installed, this didn't happen. So today, I installed karmic koala, but much to my surprise I am experiencing the same problem. I used 'lspci' to find out what NIC is in my pc and I found out I have the following NIC: 00:12.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev 78 ) I'm suspecting the NIC to be the problem. Is this probable? If so, I want to buy a add-in network card (simple one, not a gigabit card)

I'm running Fedora 12 on an Acer Aspire One with KDE. The built-in wireless works without a problem EVERYWHERE except at work. It's a shared wireless connection using WPA/WPA2 security.I can connect but it's "hit-and-miss" if I can do anything with it. Somedays it works well for a few minutes then has a period of inactivity - then slow - randomly receives...It worked flawlessly when the computer was running Windows7 no one else has connectivity issues but I'm the only one using Linux.

I recently installed the vt6656 wireless pci card that came with my zotac motherboard. I can associate with my ap and get an ip address successfully. When I disconnect my ethernet cable, however, my wireless interface stops responding (can't ping it). The box itself is in a place where I don't have a monitor connected to it so I cant see anything since my ssh session gets killed as soon as I disconnect the ethernet cable.
What would be the reason why the ehternet cable being unplugged, disconnects my wifi card as well? Does something get triggered? I did some testing with iptables, blocking the 8080 traffic to the wired interface, and noticed that the 8080 traffic also gets blocked to the wifi ip. I'm afraid that this never worked properly to begin with.

I just installed Ubuntu Netbook 10.10 on my new Asus Eee PC 1215T, and I'm having trouble getting Internet access. When I first start up or reboot the PC, I'll have network access, but not Internet access. I'm connecting via a WAN at my university, and so the first thing you have to do is "register" the computer on the network (by visiting a certain website on their intranet) before it will allow you to access the Internet. Takes about 3 minutes to register it. I have enough time to *begin* this registration process, but I've tried several times and I can't get all the way through it before I mysteriously lose all network access. Unfortunately this is a brand new machine and came without any OS installed, so there's no way I know of to test whether this is defective hardware or not.

I'm trying to run an RSYNC job that keeps hanging without any error messages. When I started monitoring traffic with WireShark, I found that RSYNC runs without problems for a few minutes, then starts generating endless TCP ZeroWindow warnings and eventually dies with TCP Window Full error.Has anyone seen this before?PS: I should mention that I don't know much about remote system and I'm not using SSH, just pure RSYNC.

Recently I set up a Debian server following this guide:
However I wasn't able to connect to the internet after the clean install of debian.
I found a fix:
Where x is a number not in use by any machine
Where y is the number on the gateway
These commands are appended to /etc/rc.d/rc.local and works fine.
The server is virtual and running on a vmware installation.
The problem, I have, appears randomly after the server has been startet. Sometimes after 20 hours and sometimes after 9 hours only.
I can't connect to the server through the web (server.mydomain.com). However I can reach my computer running vmware at (host.mydomain.com). In vmwares terminal window I can access the debian installation which is running all fine. No errors or so. I can even ping remote ip-adresses from the debian server without problems. Restarting the server fixes the problem. But it then re-appears after some time.

Periodically, about 3 to 5 hours, Ubuntu disconnects from my wi-fi network and doesn't reconnect until I restart the router. This is an Ubuntu specific issue, since it doesn't happen when I boot into my Windows partition, and it doesn't happen to other computers on the network.

I have a minor Internet issue. I have a static IP address with the modem acting as a gateway only to my ISP. My Ubuntu server hosts my public IP address and I use pppoeconf to connect. Every 3 hours I lose Internet. I have wrote a short script to reconnect. I doubt that it is my ISP trying to renew that often.

I have a problem with network on centos, after i restart the server it works for few hours/couple days, and the network is dropped. - no errors in the log, only that "Network is unreachable" I do 'service network restart' comes back on- directadmin, dns, awbs- everything works good, but only for few hours(never longer then couple days), and then it is dropped again. I searched many forums, and on one them someone wrote that it is because that static IP was used on the same network by other machine. I had a different server running with that ip on my network before, but it was few weeks ago, and there is no other server connected to the network right now (I have one desktop connected with dynamic ip, and it has no problem), and i still have the same problem.
I was suggested to set a cron jobs to restart network every few hours- i thing that is not a solution. Does anyone have any idea what could be a problem? Anyone had similar problems? What could be the reasons for the network to be dropped after few hours? Here is latest 'dmesg' output after losing network:

I posted this on Launchpad under bug# 569445 and though I'm certain someone in our heroic development community will have a look at it eventually, maybe someone can help me here in the meantime, or at least provide some background info. Maybe a little reassurance that Ubuntu isn't broken for my Wifi is all I need.
Quote:
Binary package hint: wireless-crda I do hope I've picked the right package for this. Investigators, feel free to email me with whatever bash commands you need me to find out more about the hardware. The problem is that wireless in Lucid is dying for me after about a minute or so, and the activity light on my netbook just flashes. The wireless monitor at the top of the screen still thinks it's connected. It's like it's out of sync or something.
This doesn't happen under Win7 on this hardware, nor does it happen to other devices in my house on the network. Also, I wasn't having this problem under Lucid Beta 1 I have an Acer Aspire (Olympic Variant) 1410 Win7 reports the adapter as Intel WiFi Link 1000 BGN The wireless router I'm using is a DLink DIR-628. The connection is OPEN.

I'm not sure if this is a problem with Ubuntu or with my router(s).
When I first installed Ubuntu about 6 months ago, I was able to connect to my wireless network without any problems. Becaue it's a laptop, I turn it off when I'm not using it.
But, starting about a month ago, if I don't use my Ubuntu computer for a few days at a time, it won't "see" my broadcast SSID when I turn it on. The SSID for my network just doesn't show up on the list of SSIDs that it detects in the area (but it still detects other people's SSIDs).
If I connect Ubuntu to my wireless network every day, it will automatically connect to my network without a problem, but if I don't use my computer for a few days, then it stops being able to "see" my SSID.
In order to connect, I have to connect to my router from my hardwired Win 7 desktop PC via 192.168.1.1 and re-save the wireless settings without changing them (the router is set to broadcast my SSID). Then my Linux machine is able to see my SSID again and connect wirelessly.
The problem is obviously with the router, right? So I bought a new router, and have the exact same problem! So now I'm not sure any more if the problem is with Linux or with both routers.

I have a hp dv3 laptop which dual boots Win7 and Ubuntu 9.1 64 bit. I have no issues with my wireless adapter in Win7, but I lose connection after a couple of hours in Ubuntu. When connection is lost it is not possible to view any wireless signals, the adapter is basically turned off. The only way to restore the connection is to reboot, then Ubuntu will again automatically connect to my WP2 encrypted router. My wireless adapter is a AR928X made by Atheros.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 32 bits and a Realtek 8185 wireless card. The card worked perfectly fine with WPA for a long time in Windows 7, but on Ubuntu I'm having problems. Using it without installing anything else makes it work for a very short time. It disconnects after a while and I have no other choice but to restart the computer.
Using windows drivers and ndiswrapper doesn't work at all (in fact it makes things worse because it stops recognizing my card at all). Using the linux drivers from Realtek's website is what works the best so far. I had to compile them and install them. But it still disconnects after a few hours if I'm using WEP (and only after a few minutes if I'm using WPA). I looked at other people with 8185 problems in this forum but their solutions didn't work for me.

What do I need to do to ensure that the service will stay uo 24x7x365?

I'd like to find some sort of program which can tell me how much incoming data I've had in the last 24 hours. It goes by hours, not by days, but anything that's simple and that can display this will do. Is there any sort of program that does this? Something that would fit well with Ubuntu's style wouldn't hurt, but I'm not that worried about it as long as it does the job.
