May 27, 2010

I'm using Lucid and after a few minutes of inactivity the system goes into the Lock Screen status also available under the shut down icon. now I don't like the screen to be blocked mainly cause when I get back I've to type again my password everytime. Under Karmic the screen used to go into a sleep status but it only needed a touch of the mouse in order to come back....

Ubuntu :: Unable To Use Toshiba 1Tb External HDD Correctly - It Turns Itself Off After A Few Minutes Of Inactivity

Jan 12, 2010

I got this 1Tb Toshiba external about a month ago, and recently I started really using it to share lots of media files. What I've noticed is that it turns itself off after a few minutes of inactivity -- I researched this issue across the internet, and found that it's between 5 and 30 minutes, depending on who's writing about it.

I found a person who posted a DOS batch file, which (i think) continuously accesses the drive as long as the batch file is running. I'd like to find a way to do that in linux. could someone point me in the right direction?

i took a few minutes to plan it out... i think i need a loop that will access the drive (or do something to it, at least) once every minute until i close the script. I'd also like a message box that shows up that says something like "while this is open, your HDD is being accessed".

Fedora Networking :: Worthless Wireless Connection \ Works Well For A Few Minutes Then Has A Period Of Inactivity - Then Slow?

Nov 24, 2009

I'm running Fedora 12 on an Acer Aspire One with KDE. The built-in wireless works without a problem EVERYWHERE except at work. It's a shared wireless connection using WPA/WPA2 security.I can connect but it's "hit-and-miss" if I can do anything with it. Somedays it works well for a few minutes then has a period of inactivity - then slow - randomly receives...It worked flawlessly when the computer was running Windows7 no one else has connectivity issues but I'm the only one using Linux.

Ubuntu :: Instability In Karmic \ Lock Up Every Time It Had A Period Of Extended Inactivity?

Jan 21, 2010

I skipped over Jaunty on my main desktop because Intrepid had been working perfectly for so long. Finally took the plunge to Karmic, and have had major instability problems. I cannot trace them to any particular program I am using. At first it seemed related to power management, since it would lock up every time it had a period of extended inactivity. I have disabled ACPI in my BIOS (I think), and any power management settings I could find in gnome to try to troubleshoot. That seems to have helped, but it still happens semi-regularly, sometimes when I am in the middle of using it. I have tried checking logs and googled anything that seemed important. ie a message in kern.log reads: Clocksource tsc unstable

Ubuntu :: Allow Auto-log Off Feature Either An Extended Inactivity Time Or To Disable Inactivity-logouts

Oct 18, 2010

I would like to allow the auto-log off feature either an extended inactivity time or to disable inactivity-logouts.

I use my PC strictly at home, and have no security issues. I've set my username to no-password so that I just click [twice] to log back on. But I must do that to see the screen display - say to see what's playing on Pandora.

Can I set the auto-logout-time somewhere or disable the function?

Security :: Lock Out Logins At The Console?

May 12, 2009

Ubuntu :: Timed Lock On Virtual Console?

Mar 2, 2011

Something I find myself doing every once in a while is using Ctrl-Alt-F[x] to switch out to a virtual terminal, and the Alt-F7-ing back to X without logging out.

While I don't anticipate that too many people that might have access to my computer would know how to switch consoles, there is still some degree of security risk provided by a logged-in console session. I've found vlock, but that seems to lock the console immediately when called, rather than running as a daemon that locks inactive consoles. (Even it's -t option just gives a timeout before an optional (and separate) text-mode screensaver package activates, rather than an inactivity timeout).

Is there any vlock-like package out there that provides the timed locking services for text consoles that XScreenSaver provides for X? Either a lock on timeout or a lock on switchaway setup would be adequate.

General :: `mencoder` Captures 10 Minutes Of Audio In Less Than 10 Minutes?

Mar 15, 2011

I'm using mencoder to capture audio from a Encore ENLTV-FM3 video capture device. I have recently noticed that, since one week ago, when the machine was forcibly restarted due to a power outage, all recordings are slightly pitched, they play back slower than they should.

I narrowed down the problem to the following command line:

$ time mencoder -really-quiet -tv driver=v4l2:device=/dev/video1:chanlist=us-cable:audiorate=32000:alsa:adevice=hw.1:input=0:amode=1:normid=11 -endpos 00:10:00 -ovc copy -oac pcm -of rawaudio -o test-32000.wav tv://69
real 9m54.886s
user 0m5.536s
sys 0m1.740s
$ ls -l test-32000.wav
-rw-r--r--@ 1 martin martin 76800000 Mar 15 17:20 test-32000.wav

Somehow, mencode managed to gather precisely 10 minutes worth of raw audio in 9m 55s. That's not physically possible, unless the capture device's A/D converters are "overclocked". I can't think of any other explanation besides hardware failure. Can that be? Could it be that something got burnt during the power outage and now the capture device's internal clock went nuts?

Since the machine's restart, I've also noticed dmesg is flooded with entries like this:

CE: hpet increased min_delta_ns to XXX nsec

Which seem to indicate that the computer's high precision event timer is somehow out of sync. Does this have to do with the audio issue? Can it be that the audio converter's sample rate is linked to the HPET? I'm totally lost here. Has anyone bumped into something similar?

General :: How To Change Inactivity Timeout

Mar 26, 2010

Running openSUSE 11.2 with Gnome. After a relatively short period of time, screen goes blank, and when I click on it, I get presented with password prompt, and when I enter it, I'm back where I left off. I don't see how to change this, and all the time I've spent so far in YaST trying to find out where this setting is kept and how to change it has been wasted effort. So now I'm asking: how do you change this to something a little more reasonable?

I'm taking an online SuSE LINUX class, and as they cover different topics, I jump over to the Linux system (which I have running in a vm under VMWare server on W2K3) and try stuff out, and most of the time I have to enter my password because I was away too long.

General :: Set The Length Time Before Session Times Out Due To Inactivity?

Feb 20, 2011

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 and find that if I leave the machine for more than a couple minutes, it will automatically log me out. Instructions at other sites have indicated that session controls are to be found in System>Properties. But there is no Session in the list under Properties in Ubuntu 10.04. How can I control this feature so that I'm not having to constantly login every time I turn around? I've searched everywhere and can't find a solution.

Ubuntu :: Sudo-apt Get Not Working - Not Get Lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock Resource Temporarily Unavailable

Jun 12, 2011

I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 on an old Sony Vaio laptop. I was following some of the steps here..[url]

The step "Enable Full DVD Playback(Dual Layer DVD Support)" did not finish correctly doh and now I can't use 'sudo apt-get' for anything or the software center or using the 'Update Manager' does not work.

The update manger says it may be caused by an update not finishing correctly which sounds correct as explained above. The apt-get command gives me back the following....'Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock resource temporarily unavailable' 'unable to lock administration directory /var/lib/dpkg is another process using it?'

I tried the obvious restart but that hasn't worked.

Ubuntu :: Num Lock Doesn't Work / When Pressing Num Lock And Typing Numbers, Nothing Happens?

Jun 23, 2010

I'm wondering why the num lock doesn't work in Ubuntu anymore? When you press the "num lock" key, you're supposed to be able to input the numbers along with + - * / and decimal point. When I press num lock and try typing numbers, nothing happens.

I've done a google search and this is a well known problem that nobody has fixed. In Windows it's never a problem.

Seems such a shame that the great Ubuntu and Linux are so good for stability and speed, but can't get a simple num lock working.

Red Hat :: Su Hangs On Exit After Inactivity

Mar 25, 2010

We have two types of servers RHEL5 and RHEL4 as well as Fedora 11 desktops.

After a period of inactivity, trying to exit from "su - <username>" causes the system to hang for about 10 minutes. It takes that long before the prompt comes back. Here are a few items that noticed as I have tried to trouble shoot this problem. The prompt always comes back if you wait long enough It only happens on RHEL 5. RHEL4 and Fedora 11 are unaffected It does not appear to matter what other software is running. Some boxes have databases, others do not It happens to boxes in run level 3 as well as boxes in run level 5 It does not matter if logging in from the console (tty) or from ssh (pts). Both types of logins produce the same result.

It does not matter if the account is an LDAP or a local account. It takes between 30 min and 1 hour of inactivity before the problem occurs Other sessions on the box are completely unaffected. Once hung, I can still log in with a different session without a problem top shows no load while session is hung there are no messages in /var/log/messages, /var/log/secure, /var/log/audit/audit.log or in dmesg if a session is killed, finger shows that it is still logged in a putty log shows that the server is still sending "keep alives" to putty while the session is hung Only su is affected. There is no problem logging out of the box from the initial login account. what I can try in order to trouble shoot this?
