Ubuntu :: Guest Operating System Disabled Processor

May 12, 2010

After installing the 32 bit desktop version 10.04 on vmware 6 and then rebooting ( a number of times) I get the message "the guest operating system has disabled the processor". This doesnt seem to happen when I install the 64bit version though. I have 9.1 running in 32bit versions in vmware and several other operating systems.I am not sure if any of those things would cause this issue but I have read in posts about people having issues with RAID and speed stepping. Hopefully that info can help spmepne point me in the right direction. Thank you.

Ubuntu :: Operating System Lose Data During A Power Failure As Windows Operating System?

Jan 13, 2010

Will a Linux operating system lose data during a power failure as does a Windows operating system?

(If yes.) This has not come up before but I'm going to be doing some work I don't want to lose.

Could you either point me to a backup tutorial or give me the quick overview of preserving stuff with Ubuntu?

CentOS 5 :: New Installation - No Operating System Found?

Jan 12, 2010

I'm new at Centos, although I am familiar with Redhat.I have a laptop that has Windows XP installed on it, and I want this to run Centos 5.3 instead.I read some tutorials online, where I found the download "CentOS-5.3-i386-LiveCD". I burned this to a DVD-RW. When I put the disk in my drive and look my my D: Drive it reads: DVD RW Drive (D:) CentOS-5.3-i386-LiveCD.>I am burning with Nero 7 Essentials.I place this in the laptop disk drive, bring up the BIOS, set it to boot from CD, and when I boot it up I get the message "No Operating System Found".I also tried this from another computer, Windows Vista Home Premium, and it skipped the priority boot (which I set to CD) and went right to the hard disk, booting up to Vista like normal.I hope I'm just doing something wrong.. When I go into the DVD, I first of all see a folder labeled "LiveOS" - Then inside -> -osmin - IMG File - 12.0 KB-squashfs - IMG File - 677 MB

CentOS 5 :: KVM Guest Performance After Kernel/system Update?

Mar 30, 2011

Last I upgraded one of our cent 5 boxes which is running kvm with a mix of centos and windows VMs.After the update performance just tanked on the XP guest, but the others (including other windows VMs) are just fine.I checked with our good friend google and didn't really get any help there. We're hoping to NOT have to rebuild the XP guest, so I thought I'd check in here first.

This is CentOS release 5.5 (Final) with kernel

CentOS 5 Server :: CentOS 5.5 Guest In VirtualBox / Less Memory Available Than Configured

Aug 27, 2010

I just ran into a weird problem with a CentOS 5.5 64-bit server running VirtualBox 3.2.8 (I would run Vmware Server 2.0.2 if not for the well known fact that Vmware doesn't care about its Server line anymore and it doesn't run on CentOS > 5.3 without major splits). I currently have two guests in that VirtualBox setup, a CentOS 5.5 64-bit and a Fedora 13 64-bit. The CentOS 5.5 guest shows less memory available than configured. If, for example, I give the virtual machine 512MB of memory the guest OS only recognizes 380MB. If I give it 768MB it only recognizes 637MB, and so on. I don't have that problem on the Fedora guest - 1024MB configured, 1024MB available.

Ubuntu :: No Operating System Found?

Sep 2, 2010

I got a new laptop today and the first thing I did was to install Ubuntu as a dual boot with Windows 7. Everything seemed to work the first time I loaded Ubuntu after installation, and Windows also seemed to work. Then, Windows Maintenance said there was possible disk corruption, so I restarted the computer and now I get this error when trying to load. After reading around about similar problems I think it might be a problem with the grub bootloader. It is 64-bit if that makes a difference.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Get Into Operating System

May 17, 2011

The issue I've been having is vague so I'm unsure if anyone can help me but it's worth a shot. The other day I was booting my laptop and this is what ended up happening and has continued to occur on successive boots:[URL] Each time it boots this is how the screen is characterized. For example: [URL] After this, continuing the boot process, the screen does this--which makes sense since the Kubuntu boot screen is this color and this where it should typically appear (I installed Kubuntu some months prior to this issue.): [URL]

After this screen, the monitor goes blank and becomes unresponsive. It usually flashes to black and then appears to turn on--becoming a slightly lighter shade of black.

Then, nothing. I can't go into tty. I've tried booting with a live CD but the issue persists and hangs, saying: soft lockup cpu 0 stuck for 61s. I've tried taking my laptop apart but I'm not familiar enough with hardware to do anything productive.

General :: Erase Operating System

Nov 22, 2010

Assume I have a computer on which I want to use ubuntu for a while (single boot). Assume also that in about six months I want to give this computer to Mr. X, but I do not want Mr. X to know that I have been using ubuntu. I don't want to install anything over top of ubuntu, I just want the computer to be completely (or as nearly completely as possible) blank so that Mr. X cannot infer what I've been doing on it. The trick here is that I can't use operating system x_{1} to delete operating system x_{0}. I don't want Mr. X to know anything about which OS I have been using. Mr. X, by the way, is a sophisticated computer user but not particularly interested in tracking me down. Once he sees that the computer is blank Mr. X will just install his own operating system and everybody will be happy.

Fedora :: Can Use All-in-one Printer With LINUX Operating System?

Nov 24, 2009

Can I use my all-in-one printer with LINUX Operating System? KODAK All-in-One Printers are designed to to work with WINDOWS XP, WINDOWS VISTA, WINDOWS 7 Operating Systems and with MAC OS. Because of its open-source nature, LINUX OS requires a complex, dedicated support team. LINUX OS represents a very small percentage of installed operating systems in the U.S. As a result, costs for ongoing support and a dedicated support team are not justified at this time.

As Kodak continues to launch products, and as updates are made to LINUX OS, launching LINUX Drivers would require ongoing support and driver updates to Kodak's software. Customer support teams are focusing efforts on current issues concerning the more prevalent WINDOWS and MAC OS; adding support for LINUX OS would take resources away from these issues. Compatibility information for KODAK All-in-One Printers is printed on the retail package so that our customers can be aware of the printer's hardware and software requirements at the time or purchase. For more information about specifications and compatibility, visit KODAK All-in-One Printers.
