Ubuntu :: Permission Denied - Failed Upgrade - Missed Some Backup Data - Can See It But Not Get It
May 15, 2010
I tried a 9.10 -> 10.04 upgrade that went fail. I can now get it to the login screen where it gives a hard freeze. Same with recovery. I can get to a command line, but not with networking so
So I finally said screw it, I'm going to doa fresh install. I downloaded and burned 10.04 at work. Not, it is giving me an installer error when I boot from it, but then it will load the desktop from the LiveCD.
All I really want to do is grab some data that I didn't get when I backed up by home directory, then I can go back and do a fresh install. I can even download a new 10.04 CD if I need to because the installation files are screwed up or something.
The problem is that some of the files have permissions on that that show as an 'X' on the icon and it won't let me copy them to my USB backup drive.
How can I copy the files marked with an 'X' that have this permission issue?

I have a cron backup scheme in which I rsync, then tar, then copy files on my internal hard drives to an external (USB) drive. When it works, it works. But I often get a "Permission Denied" message for all of these tasks. how the external drive is auto-mounted so I edited the etc/fstab so that the owner of the cron job is also the owner of the external drive (I think. Unfortunately, I'm not at that machine right now (it's at work), I can't give the exact fstab line (I will post it as an update to this thread next time I am at the machine).) BUT, I still get times when the cron backup runs fine and other times I get the Permission Denied. This is a shared machine that is dual-booted, so what I *think* is going on is that when the machine is rebooted to Fedora, but nobody logs in, I get a Permission Denied for the cron backup. It seems like on days when someone has logged in as the main user and left without logging out that the cron backup runs fine.

I have a Ubuntu box and just got a new hard drive. Rather than copy everything over from my old working Ubuntu install, I wanted to install Ubuntu from scratch and then rebuild the file contents.I have a large collection of music that I use on my mac (another computer) and like to keep sync'ed to the Ubuntu box. The following script used to work flawlessly:
Code:
rsync -avz --delete --exclude-from './music_exclude_list' '/Users/ryan/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/' 'ryan@192.168.1.200:/home/share/music'

Why is this occuring, is there anyway of getting around this? I just cant remember originally on my old system how I set this up.

I'm sooo exausted after two days of fooling with this. The problem: Apr 27 17:29:21 mxkasib dovecot: lda: Error: userdb lookup: connect(/var/run/dovecot/auth-userdb) failed: Permission denied (euid=8(mail) egid=12(mail) missing +w perm: /var/run/dovecot/auth-userdb, euid is not dir owner)
Obviously, dovecot-lda, instanced by postfix, couldn't access the auth-userdb file because of permission. There are plenty of topics over the internet, the problem is really simple. Except for I've got all the permissions needed, or it seems to me so and I'm missing something. Here is some additional information:
[Code]...
I've given all the permissions I could imagine. It's even devil 666, and it still complains.

I have my DNS configure in 2 zones. 1 internal, and the other external. DNS is chrooted under /var/named/chroot amd has been operating without any problems for well over 2 years now. I have recently run cross the problem shown in the subject line. When I try to freeze the internal dehnert.com zone with the following command...rndc freeze dehnert.com IN internal
I get the error...
I have been running the command as root, and with iptables turned off, so there is no firewall to restricting access. (the system sits behind a firewall) I have been searching the forums all over, but I havent run across what might be causing me to have root denied access. If anyone has seen any problem like this, please point me in the right direction so I can iron this out.
My named.conf is as follows...

I just isntalled LAMP using tasksel and have a problem. Whenever I try to access a page (aside from phpmyadmin, that works well), I get this error... Code: Warning: Unknown: failed to open stream: Permission denied in Unknown on line 0 Fatal error: Unknown: Failed opening required '/var/www/index.php' (include_path='.:/usr/share/php:/usr/share/pear') in Unknown on line 0
I have restarted the computer, restarted apache, etc and still nothing. When I first installed, phpmyadmin was inaccessible, so I ran some command in terminal which apparently created a symlink between phpmyadmin in the user/share dir to the /var/www dir, and curious if this is the problem. I have no clue how to remove this symlink if this is the case, and have phpmyadmin working now due to install using sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin.

I had debian lenny running smoothly for a while, then I think the power went out and the computer didn't shutdown smoothly. The next time I started it up I ran into this error: Checking root file system.../etc/rcS.d/S10checkroot.sh: line 274: /sbin/logsave: Permission deniedfailed (code 126)This happens in single user mode as well. I've tried fscking all my partitions but it doesn't help. I've booted in bypassing the normal init and changed the permissions of /sbin/logsave to 777 and during boot I get a message of: The file system check corrected errors on the root partition but requested that the system be restarted. failed! Then the system just reboots automatically without letting me to anything.

Code:
Line 18 in modules.conf looks like this:
Code:
I've tried removing and re-installing proftpd, but this doesn't help
If I comment line 18 in modules.conf, I just get permission denied on the next LoadModule command...
Can I remove all modules? or is there a way of fixing the permission denied issue?

I just tried to updated my UBUNTU 10.04 to 10.10.I missed the page where I was asked to reuse the current GRUB information. The system hung after trying to load the new GRUB.I rebooted, and got an error about Configuration defaults for gnome power configuration not correct.I googled this, and have lost of disk space. The other suggestion was to remove and reinstall the gnome power app.I am not sure if this is the real problem, or if it is something to do with GRUB.There is some information on the system that I don't want to loose. I can get to a system console.

I tried posting this before and I'm not sure what happened but I don't think it worked, so if it did please forgive the double post.am very very new to centOS and linux in general. I just want to setup a test web server that more closely mirrors our actual web server that is hosted by rackspace. I've installed centOS and tried to setup Apache, PHP and MySQL from a guide on the web using Yum. When I go to localhost in the web browser I'm able to see the default apache page. However when I create a php page it's just blank. When I look at the apache error logs I get this: PHP Warning: Unknown: failed to open stream: Permission denied in Unknown on line 0
I've been searching alot on the internet and I know the issue is permission related, but I don't know how to fix it. I've seen some forum posts that say you need to use the chmod 775 command on the /var/www/html folder.Currently when I do ls -l /var/www/html it returns
-rw------- 1 root root 19 May 5 13:16 index.php
-rw------- 1 root root 19 May 5 13:15 index.php~
I'm sure that this isn't correct but like I said I don't know much about how to set permissions or who the owner needs to be. I've done alot of searching and seen similar posts, but no one seems to explain it clearly.

I've got 10.10 running trying to recover files from 10.04/10.10 I don't know what to call it. I did update-manager -d but all I get is a bunch of failed packages when I try to run it, so I downloaded the full RC iso. Now I'm trying to recover my stuff from the HD using a live-usb. The only problem is, when I try to copy the files onto my SD card, I do not have permission to access some of the stuff on the HD and some of the stuff like the "Desktop" I do.

I have just installed 9.10 netbook remix onto my Eeepc 901. I was previously using 9.4 Rather than clicking on shutdown icons, or going through shutdown menus, I added a keyboard shortcut to run a shell script containing the following code:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
init 0
because init needs to be run as root to have the correct permissions, I set the owner and group to be root , ran chmod 711, then chmod u+s to prevent anyone altering the script, and to allow anyone to execute it with root privelidges Since updateing to 9.10 netbook remix, I have been unable to get this to work. have applied the above changes but get a "/bin/bash: /usr/bin/shutdownscript: permission denied" error when I try to run my shutdown script from the terminal (nothing happens when I press the key combination asigned to the keyboard shortcut). If I run the shutdown script with sudo then it neatly shuts down. ls reveals the following permissions:-rws--s--x 1 root root
So it appears as if SUID and SGID are both set, and the owner/group are correct, and the script works, and yet it doesn't have the permissions to work. I installed 9.4 long ago enough that I can't remember if I had to do anything else to get it working, or has something changed between 9.4 and 9.10?

Forum.Ref:Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid LynxFluxboxOpera 10.61Has anyone a clue how I can solve following (minor but annoying) problem? It takes a relative long time (a few seconds) as normal user before Opera starts in my fluxbox environment. I expected a quicker startup time. Also because when I start opera as root the startup time is shorter.I started opera in a terminal. No messages when started as root with gksudoBut 5 lines of:open: Permission deniedwhen started as normal user. Startup succeeds after these messages. So I figured out that there is some kind of authorisation problem but have no clue how to find out which files opera tries to open and fails and what to do at this point.I searched for similar problems on this forum and also via google but could not find any real answers.

I have a shared directory on another machine but I can't get it to mount. The permission denied doesn't say where/which permission is denied. Is it on the remote on on the local machine? The remote has sharing enabled for the shareddocs directory and after I have mkdir'ed the local mount point I open it's permissions too.
The verbose response from mount.cfis looks like this:
mount.cifs kernel mount options: unc=//192.168.1.102shareddocs,domain=WORKGROUP,ver=1,rw ,username=clive,,,,,,,,,,,ip=192.168.1.102,pass=** ******
mount error(13): Permission denied
Refer to the mount.cifs( manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) The man page does not have a list of error codes.

I've done a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04 and tried to create a folder using the File Brower went to my user account and proceeded to create a directory. Then when trying to cp a file to this new directory I get permission denied. I checked the directory permissions and discovered that its owner was root not the user that I was signed in as.
So I had no choice but to enable the root account so I could copy the file I wanted. Why could I not have copied the file using the user that I was signed/logged int as without resorting to changing users to root. I hope that its not a bug of some kind or maybe I did something weird during the install. I would like to disable the root account again.

I have a user (let's call him John) who is not able to list contents of several 777 directories even though it appears he has permission to.
Case in point, as root:
Code:
Code:
If I use ls -a or strictly ls as john, I can list the contents of the nss directory:
Code:
That says to me that I have an issue listing permissions. Fine, I don't really need john to be able to list permissions. I want him to have rwx access to /media/nss/ENG which as you can see from my listing as root shouldn't be a problem since the perms on that dir are 777.
I am able to CD into the ENG directory or any other directory or subdirectory in /media/nss that has equivalent 777 perms, but once in the directories I can't list the contents:
Code:
I can get anywhere and do anything I want under the media/nss folder as john, except listing files. I even tried using an ACL i.e.
Code:
Why this isn't working?
