Slackware :: 64 Kernel Crashing After Host Resume

Oct 13, 2010

I got this problem ever since the 13.1 slackware64 release this has been annoying for months the slackware64 installed in a vmware workstation guest machine, the problem is that when the host (real pc) entered sleep while it resumes from sleep the guest vmware workstation running slackware64 13.1 the kernel starts to crash and broadcasting error messages inside the Konsole in every single tabs, here I attach the trace of kernel fault in dmesg.txt I hope it will get fixed next slackware64 release.

Debian Configuration :: Resume After Suspend Fails With Kernel 2.6.36

Aug 27, 2011

I'm having problems with resume after suspend to RAM. The machine starts to wake up, but the screens (multi mon VGA and DVI setup) are black and the keyboard doesn't light up. After ~20 seconds there's some brief disk activity and then the computer reboots. 100% repeatable with affected kernel versions. My test method is simple, I boot the machine on the kernel's recovery option, log on as root and run "PM_DEBUG=1 pm-suspend". I haven't found anything in the logs after a failed resume.

Here's the situation:
I have a SSD disk. To get TRIM support I have to use kernel 2.6.33 or later, which means that the standard kernel in Squeeze is too old.I have Nvidia graphics, and there was a change in 2.6.34 that breaks older versions of xserver-xorg-video-nouveau (version 0.0.15, used in Squeeze), I can't use Debian Squeeze with a kernel newer than 2.6.33.x.My machine (XFX GeForce 9300 motherboard) won't resume from suspend to RAM if I use a kernel newer than 2.6.36. There are no BIOS updates available.

My options:
Install newer kernel from Squeeze backports (2.6.38.2 last time I tried). <--- Not doable b/c of resume problems. Upgrade to Wheezy, which uses kernel 3.0.x. <--- Not doable b/c of resume problems.Compile a vanilla kernel. So basically I'm forced to compile my own vanilla kernel, 2.6.33.x on Squeeze or 2.6.35.x on Wheezy. I won't be stuck with an unsupported kernel version in the near future, but so far I've failed miserably.

I know that the latest kernel version where everything works is 2.6.36.x (no longer maintained), 2.6.37.0 and later cause resume problems (I've tried 2.6.37, 38, 39 and 3.0.0, .0.1). I've tried doing a git bisect on the kernel, but didn't succeed, ended up on 2.6.36-rc5 which is weird considering that 2.6.36.4 works. There may be several suspend/resume bugs in different kernel versions that messed up the bisecting results.

Slackware :: Resume After Hibernate - Current?

Oct 17, 2010

I'm using stock 32 bit current on a AAO D250 netbook. I'm running into a video issue after upgrade to the recent 2.6.35.7 kernel that doesn't exist after resume from suspend. The condition shows as a broken display that shows a black screen on the left with the KDE desktop partial exposed on the right side. Weird! My only fix so far is to blindly ctrl-alt-f6, login as root and reboot. The screen does not show the console screen during this reboot process

The pm-suspend logs show a clean hibernate and a clean thaw so that's no help. I've checked modprobe.d and don't have any alterations to any of the modules. The video module loaded is the intel_agp which sound right. I'm stumped at the moment.

Slackware :: 13.1 - Suspend / Resume With 2 Different Laptops

May 29, 2010

Laptop 1 is an acer aspire 5570. closing and opening the lid works a few times, after editing acpi_handler.sh, and battery life reporting is ok during this time. then, for no apparent reason, the laptop no longer responds to the lid closing, and no longer seems to be able to read the battery charge state. once this has occurred, the computer will also no longer restart, it tries a few times, with lights flashing and the hd making ugly noises. the only way to extricate the computer from this state is to pull and reinsert the battery.

Laptop 2 is a gateway nv18. suspend/resume with the lid are ok, mostly. the issure here is no display at all in x. but the computer does respond to ctrl-alt-backspace to kill x, with the command prompt returning. still not good. I'm trying a fresh install on the gateway, to see if this was just an installation glitch.
Both laptops performed flawlessly in 13 otherwise.

Slackware :: Cannot Suspend And Resume - ThinkPad Edge 13 (AMD-ATI)

Jan 19, 2011

Slackware 13.1 installed clean on a new ThinkPad Edge (version 13 inch with AMD Processor and ATI graphics). I can get most of what I want working fine except for suspend and resume. I read somewhere that I should be using generic rather than huge kernel, so I have done that and scrapped ATI proprietary driver in case that was causing problems, but nothing so far has allowed me to suspend and resume with pm-suspend, acpitool suspend or with KDE suspend command. In all cases the screen blanks and the single ThinkPad red LED goes from on to blinking, but nothing seems to wake the machine up again. I had both suspend and hibernate working fine with Slack 13.1 on an older Lenovo laptop and ubuntu users report on their forums that this laptop does suspend and resume "out of the box" so I feel it must be possible.

Fedora :: Kernel Package Keeps Crashing ?

I'm using Fedora 12 64 bit, with XFCE

It happens that many times I get this message notification: " A crash in package kernel has been detected "

When I open the Automatic Bug Report Tool, I get that The Linux kernel crashed and Crash Rate says 78 times!

So it's crashing all the time but otherwise the system is running good so far..

How can i debug this? Any log I could check?

I didn't see anything particular in /var/log/messages

Slackware :: 13.37: Crazy Flashing Screen After ACPI Resume?

May 6, 2011

Slackware 13.37 is giving me ugly suspend/resume problems. When I suspend to RAM and my laptop wakes up again, I get a corrupt screen flashing like crazy. This happens when I suspend from the console and when in X11; be it by issuing 'echo mem >/sys/power/state' or 'pm-suspend'.Tried the 'save-pci' quirk for 'pm-suspend', no dice.Tried to POST the card with 'vbetool' after resume, no dice. Tried to save/restore vbestate before and after suspend/resume, no dice. What is one supposed to do to get this stuff to work in 2011?Funny thing that suspend-to-disk works as it should. Also, with 12.2 I would pick a VGA mode for the console in 'lilo.conf' and it would freaking stick. Not anymore. Now the 1st half of the boot is performed in my chosen mode (80x30), then it switches to maximum resolution with an idiotically unsightly small font.My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5101 with an ATI Radeon 200M card.Is anyone going thru the same hell or has anyone found a fix?

Ubuntu :: Kernel Bug - Multiple Mail Clients Crashing 10.04?

Aug 18, 2010

Over the past week or so, I've posted a few message about what looked like general stability problems in lucid, then problems specifically with Thunderbird.

Today I found it isn't just Thunderbird. I tried Claws Mail and Kmail, and all of them exhibit the same symptoms as Thunderbird:

- The app randomly hangs, crashes or stops connecting to the mail server.

- Quitting the app randomly takes down other applications. (Uh-oh -- modern OSs are supposed to prevent one application from corrupting another.)

- Once the problems start, any application is likely to have stability problems -- e.g., this morning, when Kmail started buggering up, I launched the software center to uninstall it and the window never appeared. A box showed up in the window panel at the bottom of the screen at first, but when it was time to draw the window, kaboom.

(I'm currently not using Evolution because of issues with syncing message deletion back to the server. Plus, at least once, Evolution lost its connection to the mail server. I don't remember serious instability with it, but I wasn't looking for the instability either. It might well be just as bad as the others.)

So, we have an issue triggered by multiple applications, and the issue is not limited to one unstable process on the machine (one unstable process makes other processes unstable). That smells like a kernel bug.

I'm wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this? I'm using the amd64 version on a MSI A6200, Intel Core i3 processor. I'll have to doublecheck the kernel version. When I installed the OS, it was (something-something).21 and now (after the first round of automatic system updates) it's .24 - "something-something" is whatever the standard kernel is when you download the amd64 CDROM image.

As long as I'm not running a mail client (apparently, any mail client), the system is stable. So it looks very much like there is something that mail clients do, which other applications tend not to do, which is broken.

Slackware :: New Intel Driver Is Crashing X

I've been using it since it was put on current and have been having X crash on me repeatedly or getting a black screen from which I can only recover by a hard reboot. Slackware :: Flash Player Crashing All The Time In X86_64 ?

Mar 28, 2011

i was having severe problems under slackware64-current with the adobe flash player plugin for firefox. browsing and watching videos on videos was a pain in the neck with the player crashing when opening a couple of tabs, and constant lockups for several seconds while the plugin wrapper that was running it was taking one cpu core for itself.

it seems the problem stems from a recent change in glibc that modified the memcpy implementation and caused a bit of havok in some packages. i'm guessing it's the same change (or a similar one) that caused problems with sysklogd and iptraf, among others, with strcpy and overlapping strings. remember the patches:

[url]
[url]

strictly speaking, those are problems in the program source code, but most people seem to think it's a bad idea to provide a memcpy that doesn't work for overlapping strings. a bit of discussion can be found here, with a few priceless comments by torvalds:

[url]

it seems the source code for the flash player plugin probably contains this bug, as manually modifying the libflashplayer.so binary to replace memcpy calls with memmove calls fixes the problems. at least it clearly did for me.

a quick recipe can be extracted from that bugzilla entry and one of its attachments.

for example:

code:

that should modify the binary in place provided it's located at ~/.mozilla/plugins. the resulting binary is not distributable but the recipe is.

Slackware :: Kernel Hang During Boot Process - Slack 13.1 Stable W/ Kernel 2.6.33.4-smp

Jun 20, 2010

I installed a fresh copy of Slackware 13.1 (stable) on one of my media servers and I am experiencing something strange.... When I power up the machine, I see the kernel booting, no errors, until it gets to the point where it says:

And then randomly freeze there.... Well the machine is not totally frozen because the cursor still blinks. But it will never continue... Like I said, this happens on a random basis... After a reset, it might go through or simply stall at the same spot.

I remember after installing Slack 13.1, I rebooted the machine but forgot to remove the DVD from the player, so the install routine started up, and froze at the same point when it was loading the kernel for the setup programs...

My mobo is a MSI k9N platinum.

I never had this problem before.... (well I never used 13.1 before). Since I got this machine, I used slack 12.2 and slack 13-current with success.

This problem makes the machine extremely unreliable because I intent to use it as a backup and media server, so chances I will WOL the machine and use it remotely... if that happens.

Using NAT, I can have the two VM's up and running on VBox, but they get the same IP (10.0.2.15).So I googled it and quickly found out that I needed to change the VM's network interfaces to Bridged Networking. So I tried that. Here's two screenshots of the default configurations:
