Fedora :: Kernel Package Keeps Crashing ?
Nov 22, 2009
I'm using Fedora 12 64 bit, with XFCE
It happens that many times I get this message notification: " A crash in package kernel has been detected "
When I open the Automatic Bug Report Tool, I get that The Linux kernel crashed and Crash Rate says 78 times!
So it's crashing all the time but otherwise the system is running good so far..
How can i debug this? Any log I could check?
I didn't see anything particular in /var/log/messages

Is it possible to get a package via yum that has the kernel sources? In the "Add/Remove Software" GUI program, I have enabled the "Fedora source" s/w repository. Even then, the only kernel package I can find is the "The Linux Kernel", linux-2.6.27.15-170... which essentially provides only the kernel binaries and headers but not the source.

i just upgraded myself with all available packages from the kde-testing, and fedora-updates-testing repo's. i am dealing with one problem..... i am running kernel:
Code:
@localhost ~]$ uname -r
2.6.32.10-44.fc11.i686.PAE
however,, there are no kmod-wl packages for that kernel, so i have no wireless at the moment. how do i build / obtain kmod-wl package for my kernel? rebuilding the kmow-wl src packages does occure in build for an older kernel:
the command
Code:
rpmbuild -ba --target=`uname -m` wl-kmod.spec
results in:
Code:

[root@sharpblade ~]# yum repolist enabled
Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit
repo id repo name status
fedora Fedora 13 - x86_64 20,840
fedora-source Fedora 13 - Source 0
updates Fedora 13 - x86_64 - Updates 2,736
repolist: 23,576
why status of fedora-source is 0, dose this means there's no available packages in this repo? kernel-headers and kernel-devel have been installed, how can i install the kernel-source package?

I'm having troubles running systemtap scripts. It fails to run with message:
Code:
Checking "/lib/modules/2.6.33.3-85.fc13.i686/build/.config" failed: No such file or directory Ensure kernel development headers & makefiles are installed.
Then I typed:
Code:
$rpm -q kernel kernel-devel kernel-debuginfo
kernel-2.6.33.3-85.fc13.i686
kernel-devel-2.6.33.5-124.fc13.i686
kernel-devel-2.6.33.6-147.fc13.i686
package kernel-debuginfo is not installed
So no kernel-debuginfo, a package which I cannot find in repo. So where to get it and why it's not included in default installation if SystemTap is. It's like having Apache without tcp/ip stack.

I got this problem ever since the 13.1 slackware64 release this has been annoying for months the slackware64 installed in a vmware workstation guest machine, the problem is that when the host (real pc) entered sleep while it resumes from sleep the guest vmware workstation running slackware64 13.1 the kernel starts to crash and broadcasting error messages inside the Konsole in every single tabs, here I attach the trace of kernel fault in dmesg.txt I hope it will get fixed next slackware64 release.

Over the past week or so, I've posted a few message about what looked like general stability problems in lucid, then problems specifically with Thunderbird.
Today I found it isn't just Thunderbird. I tried Claws Mail and Kmail, and all of them exhibit the same symptoms as Thunderbird:
- The app randomly hangs, crashes or stops connecting to the mail server.
- Quitting the app randomly takes down other applications. (Uh-oh -- modern OSs are supposed to prevent one application from corrupting another.)
- Once the problems start, any application is likely to have stability problems -- e.g., this morning, when Kmail started buggering up, I launched the software center to uninstall it and the window never appeared. A box showed up in the window panel at the bottom of the screen at first, but when it was time to draw the window, kaboom.
(I'm currently not using Evolution because of issues with syncing message deletion back to the server. Plus, at least once, Evolution lost its connection to the mail server. I don't remember serious instability with it, but I wasn't looking for the instability either. It might well be just as bad as the others.)
So, we have an issue triggered by multiple applications, and the issue is not limited to one unstable process on the machine (one unstable process makes other processes unstable). That smells like a kernel bug.
I'm wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this? I'm using the amd64 version on a MSI A6200, Intel Core i3 processor. I'll have to doublecheck the kernel version. When I installed the OS, it was (something-something).21 and now (after the first round of automatic system updates) it's .24 - "something-something" is whatever the standard kernel is when you download the amd64 CDROM image.
As long as I'm not running a mail client (apparently, any mail client), the system is stable. So it looks very much like there is something that mail clients do, which other applications tend not to do, which is broken.

No time at the moment to quantify (can do later), but after months of reasonably stable audio work under kernel 26.32-24, I finally updated to 25 and jack apps are crashing left and right.

Recently switched my home server from Gentoo to CentOS and have been getting kernel panics consistently since I made the server "live". The machine was built with all new hardware. I'll post relevant configuration info and picture of the kernel panic below. So far all kernel panics have been with kernel "2.6.18-164.9.1.el5.centos.plus", right now I am testing with the kernel listed below to see if it does the same thing (2.6.18-164.9.1.el5).
justin@empire justin $ uname -rmi
2.6.18-164.9.1.el5 x86_64 x86_64
justin@empire justin $ rpm -qa |grep kernel |sort
kernel-2.6.18-164.6.1.el5
kernel-2.6.18-164.6.1.el5.centos.plus
kernel-2.6.18-164.9.1.el5

For example, the linux kernels I have installed are:

I would expect apt-get to automatically also remove linux-headers-2.6.25-2-amd64 and linux-headers-2.6.25-2-common. Is that what will happen, or do I need to explicitly state all three packages on the apt-get remove command?

I installed ubuntu on my laptop recently and would like to have trim support. (Because I have a ssd drive (crucial c-300 256gb). The current kernel that I am using is the 2.6.32 (standard lucid kernel I believe). Unfortunately TRIM support is only available from 2.6.33 and up. So I thought I'd install a new kernel using this howto:

I have a fedora 11 with kernel package: kernel-PAE-2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11.i686
I would like to install the devel package for this kernel version, but I can't find it, because in the fedora repo there is only the original kernel (2.6.29.4....) and in the updates repo there is only the newest kernel package (2.6.30....)
Where can I find the packages which are between the fedora and update repos' versions?

I've been compiling customized kernel packages for ubuntu and I've noticed that the final debian package output from running the command:
# fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-custom kernel_image kernel_headers
returns a couple of packages with a very long package name which looks similar to this:
linux-headers-2.6.32.1-custom_2.6.32.1-custom-10.00.Custom_i386.deb
linux-image-2.6.32.1-custom_2.6.32.1-custom-10.00.Custom_i386.deb
Is there a way or a workaround to reduce the filename length to a shorter format?

I upgraded to the latest -current just like always. I do the kernel packages last. This time, the machine failed to boot, telling me that it could not find the kernel modules. Well, rats.
I booted with a slackware dvd, passed the huge.s kernel, and booted into /dev/sda7, which is my main partition. I mounted /dev/sda7, and installed the kernel-modules-2.6.35.11 pkg. Rebooted, and got the same error?
I booted again with the dvd, mounted the partition, and navigated to /lib/modules - no 2.6.35.11 in there!
How do I get that package to install?

I had the latest adobe plug in installed in fedora 11, and then recently did a fresh install of fedora 12. The flash usually works fine until I open multiple tabs in firefox and crashes almost immeditely when I open multiple flash videos, though not always. It is not that big of a pain, but it would be nice to have multiple tabs open for the kind of work I do :-).

I log in, and it works perfectly fine until I try to actually use it. As soon as I click to open a chat with someone, it crashes. It wasn't doing this until this morning, and it's given me no problems before now, other than the occasional failure to send messages through.
When it crashes, it brings up the Bug Buddy bug reporting tool. Also, on further testing, it seems to only be doing this when I try to open a chat with my sister, and it does it whether it's recognizing her as being online or not.

Fedora keeps crashing on me. It happens randomly. Sometimes it will give the equivalent of a blue screen for windows. Other times it will just reboot. [URL] Does any of this mean anything to anyone? Would really love to use fedora because I like it a lot an I'm getting familiar with it but it keeps crashing.
Its a fresh install. All I have done so far is installed updates via Yum, including the updated kernel, installed RPM fusion and I installed my wireless drivers.

I have this weird problem. some of the apps like gnome-system-monitor, gnome-power-preferences, nm-applet(when clicked on edit connections) keep crashing.
the moment I log in into my gnome desktop, all the apps work fine for a minute. the problem starts after a while say 5 mins... I will not be able to run any of these apps. I always get the crash window.
Iam using fedora 11 on a toshiba satellite m200. this problem has been there for a long time now. initially I thought that software updates will make it ok. but even after several updates, the apps keep crashing.
is there a way to fix this?. everytime I need to access them, I need to logout and login and then acces them quickly before they start to crash. this is quite time consuming and irritating.

Why is F-Spot always crashing on my computer?
I'm running Fedora 10 (2.6.25-7 kernel) with Gnome on a custom-built computer that has 2 gig of RAM and an Intel Pentium 4 2.4 gig CPU.
I noticed F-Spot and started playing around with it, importing and tagging pictures and the like. Problem is that after manipulating only one or two photos (rotating 90 degrees, that sort of thing, nothing major), F-Spot crashes itself. It doesn't crash my computer, just closes itself without warning.
This happened several times, so I ran System Manager at the same time so I could track CPU and memory usage while using F-Spot. I found that CPU usage spiked to 100 percent, but RAM and swap were never touched at all, notwithstanding the high CPU usage (RAM was a constant 289 meg used out of 2 Gig available, never changed. Swap was never touched).
No error messages or statements come up. Just the plug is pulled on F-Spot.
So, why is F-Spot crashing? Is this a known bug with Fedora 10? Would forcing the use of RAM help? If so, how?

I am having issues trying to compile the alsa-linuxtant module and I am getting errors about not being able to find some files and the source needing to be reconfigured. Anyway the developers told me to try compiling on a pristine source to see if I could compile that way. When I went looking at kernel.org I did not find a 2.6.32-5 version. So I did some checking and to see just what version I have.
$ uname -r
2.6.32-5-amd64
$ dpkg --list | grep linux-image
ii linux-image-2.6-amd 64 2.6.32+27 Linux 2.6 for 64-bit PCs (meta-package)
ii linux-image-2.6.26-2-amd64 2.6.26-24 Linux 2.6.26 image on AMD64
ii linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64 2.6.32-15 Linux 2.6.32 for 64-bit PCs
So the actual package that is installed is 2.6.32-15 but uname -r reports 2.6.32-5 as the kernel version.

I've never had this happen to me before on any Linux boxes and I'm totally stumped: at random times, seemingly not at all to do with the applications open or number of windows...X crashes. This happened once every 2 weeks or so a couple of months ago...now it seems to happen 2-3 times every 24 hours.
I do not remember installing nvidia drivers. But I may have. How can I check this?
And more importantly, what things can I do to get to the bottom of why this keeps happening? It's just X crashing -- the system is not bricked. I can ssh in from another machine. But X is locked up so tightly even the mouse doesn't move.
