I am running Slackware 13.1. I have a Samsung SCX-4720FN connected to a Linksys wireless access point. How can I install this printer. Well first off, how can I even detect it to start installing it. What tool should I use?

Has anyone made a successful connection and if so how? when running Windows 7 I have no trouble. Both Windows 7 and Fedora connect to the internet without a problem.

I have never connected to a wpa network using slackware before, so I am not entirely sure how to use wpa_supplicant. I have altered the conf file, then tried dhcpcd and it times out.
I am unable to connect to my printer wirelessly. I get this: Idle - "Connecting to printer..." The computer never connects. I can print a configuration report and get the ip address. If I type that in a webrowser, I get an error: unable to connect. Even if I plug the printer into the computer by a usb, I am unable to access the printer's ip address in the webrowser. I'm not sure how to proceed on getting the printer working wirelessly. It is a hp 6940 I use the HP Deskjet 6940 Series hpijs, 3.10.2rc1.9 driver. I have only recently been having printer problems. The printer has been hooked up on the same network for years. It still prints via usb.

I can see the printer and connect to it but when I print a test page nothing happens. The job goes to the windows queue and the disappears. I have added the PS driver for windows to the /etc/samba/drivers directory. I have also downloaded and tested the cups driver. Following is my smb.conf entries.

View 9 Replies View RelatedMy home/small office LAN has network connected printers. Some use wire. Some are wireless. Each has a unique static, private IP address on my LAN. Each workstation has a primary printer, but all of the printers are visible and used by all family and office folks. The symptoms:boot a workstation, connect to LAN printer,
start a queue
print things
suspend or shutdown the workstation
resume or reboot the workstation
various troubles
Even if there are no jobs queued (everything printed already) at the time of suspend, I must routinely "thump" the printer or workstation of both to make printing work again. I am concerned with Ubuntu Jaunty towers and laptops. All of the printers are HP something with a built-in wired or wireless ethernet connection. I'm not concerned with win-dose workstations on the LAN (unless interaction over there is causing other grief)!! For example, a win-dose spooler fails to end a print job properly and let go so that others may use the resource.

I have some trouble setting up a printer on my network. My network is divided so that all wired connections are in one subnet, while all wireless devices are in another. My printer is Canon MP640 and is connected via wireless. When I use the network printer scanner utility from Canon, it will only scan my wired subnet, and is thus unable to see the printer. I can ping the printer, so there is no problem with subnet segregation.
On my router, I have Debian and iptables. My initial thought was that I could somehow set iptables to just forward all packets to an address to my printer. This address, of course, wouldn't exist "physically". But I have no idea whether or not this is the right approach. A suggestion I received from a colleague was to set up forwarding of broadcast packets. However, I am unsure whether this will have an impact on the wired subnet. If any of you could conjure a magical iptables rule for this or have suggestions other than plugging the printer into the wired net
I have finally given up trying to get to a printer on my windowsXP pc to work with my linux box and need some assistance. The printer is a hp photosmart c5500 series. My linux box is running lenny and I have installed the cups and samba applications. The linux box is networked to the win pc on a win network using a eth0 link. The link works as I have internet and e-mail connections. I have configured the smb.config file as follows:

I have run the tests in the samba checklist and the connection is apparently working. Pings to the windows pc,, the notebook, and the linux box all return the proper results. The "smbclient -L w.x.y.z" return shows the windows shares that includes the above named printer. When I try to connect the printer using the kde cups wizard or get into the c drive on the windows pc I get the NT_status_access_denied message. I get the same return when I try the "smbclient //username:passwd@wincomputer" I downloaded the appropriate drivers from HP and tried the lpadmin comand and instructions in the Debian mini-Howto but get the return of "lpadmin: No such file or directory" when in fact all the files exist and have correct permissions etc. I have a Ubuntu OS running on a notebook computer (dual boot with windowsXP) with a wireless link to the same router that accesses the printer without a problem. The smb.conf file I am using is based on that I found in my Ubuntu OS but apparently something is different.
I have ubuntu 10.10 with all current updates. and I have virtualbox installed I have xppro running through virtualbox. I am unable to use my printer with linux, (lexmark) so I want to hook up my printer to my xp that is running in virtualbox. but the xp does not see any usb devices.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using Fedora 12 KDE, and I'm trying to connect a Lexmark printer. It's a printer that I can connect to in other KDE distros. When I try to connect to it through the system settings printer manager I get a popup window that says, "Password may be incorrect", and then it goes to the new printer window. However, there is no option for a lexmark printer, lpd, ipp, or anything in the left menu bar. There's only an option for other, and a little box that asks for the uri. Am I missing a package, or is this normal behavior? Do I have to somehow open this up in sudo? Am I missing a package? I have cups, foomatic, and ghostscript installed.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to set up a Samba printer in Debian linux. The printer is being shared by a computer running windows vista. Some of the information I've got in the process. Sharing seems to be working, the printer seems to be detected and authenticating (I've tried invalid values and the utility I'm using to set things up says it cannot verify when I use invalid values, but with things as they are it claims everything checks out).
When I go into CUPS it says it detects the printer and everything is working. However, printing a test page causes the job to be immediately complete and nothing happens. It seems that the job is getting lost somewhere in the process. Could it be a firewall issue? I feel like the right ports must be unblocked since I can query the computer and verify the printer, etc. I have a laptop with vista which I installed a printer on and was able to print to that computer just fine. So it doesn't seem to be a Vista thing.

I have a client.conf in /etc/cups that points to a CUPS server. I don't have u/p access to this server. I also want to print to a local printer (USB), but I can't set it up - ALL attempts bring me back to the CUPS server password prompt. Is there some line I can add to the client.conf to allow me to use a local printer?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI made some tests with a router without security and my internet connexion worked without any problem. But if I activated the wep security (or wpa it is the same behaviour) suse 11.1 won't connect in any way.
I used knetwork manager and traditional ifup method, both failed to connect.
I saw, using iwconfig that in both cases (wpa or wep) I was associated with the AP but dhclient won't work in any way, I was always in the APIPA...
I checked if there weren't any access control (mac address filtering, ...) and all the settings in the router were off to give me full access. Including the firewall set to off. The DHCP feature was on in both cases.
I noticed that the firewall must be on in suse 11.1 otherwise I couldn't have any connections even if I disabled wep or wpa...
I'm having some trouble getting my new copy of slackware connected to the internet. I'm new to slackware, so I'm not sure where to begin troubleshooting. So far, I've run netconfig and tried to set up a DHCP and a Static-IP connection, both to no avail. I know my internet connection is working since I'm currently using the same box with a hard-drive that has crunchbang on it. I've read chapter 5 of the slackbook up to the section on PPP and have thus far gotten lost in my /etc/rc.d folder looking at lottsa neat files.
Using ifconfig -a gives me information about an eth0, an eth1, and a lo connection thing. From what I understand from the book, this means that slackware has registered my network card but does not have the right configuration necessary to connect.
I tried getting information about my connection from crunchbang, which was as simple as right-clicking a certain icon and copying down my interface, hardware address, driver, speed, security, ip address, broadcast address, subnet mask, default route, and primairy DNS. Since setting up DHCP didn't work after startup, I assumed I was using static I.P. I put in my IP address, mask, default route, and DNS, but it has not yet connected.
I installed SuSE 11.2 on my laptop (its wireless and connects to the internet) and am have trouble getting my wireless HP Deskjet j4680 to be found. I tried the printer options as root, but it does not give you an opertunity to select a wireless device to connect too. Does anyone know where I can download software for this. I tried HP, no luck.

System settings which shows nothing relating to printing and Office Org printer administration.In the latter Office org printer admin shows "generic printer"..My printer is HP 5P. and I choose the option 5P/MP.Then next step asks me to: enter a command line for the appropriate device. I don't know what the appropriate command is. Can anyone help I leave it empty and click next. It shows the 5P/MP is now listed along with generic. I make it default and send a print command resulting in "error while printing".

I had searched through the forum and did find some workarounds(like updating options.conf, removing /etc/NetworkManager directory, using ifup instead of network manager) but all those are not working for me. It will disconnect within a few mins after restaring network service. Has anyone heard about any fix from Intel guys for this and if yes then where can I get that? I had faced hell lot of difficulties while upgrading coz of many unresolved dependencies and don't want to go back to 11.2
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've tried really hard to avoid posting on here, but nothing that I've tried has worked. I just installed openSUSE 11.3 GNOME Desktop. It's my first time using openSUSE, but I do have a little bit of Linux experience. I have the following wireless network card:

I switched control of network setup to YaST (Traditional Method with ifup). It installed the firmware automatically for me. I set up connection configurations as follows:
- Dynamic Address: DHCP
- Operating Mode: Managed
- Network Name: Hetts (I was able to scan and it found my ESSID)
- Authentication Mode: No Encryption (I was using WPA2 and having trouble so for now I've switched my router to use no encryption just to try and get something working)
After setting this up and clicking OK, it should automatically configure and connect, right? I've tried a bunch of things including rebooting and deleting the wireless card configuration and starting over by reinstalling the firmware. I've also tried setting up the connection using NetworkManager and still have the same problem. I have my laptop setup to dual boot, and when I boot in Windows, wireless works perfectly fine, so there is nothing wrong with my hardware or router. Here are some of the outputs I'm getting:

I tried adding the IP address manually too using "ip addr add ...", but still no connection. I can't even ping the access point at 192.168.1.1. Sorry for such a long post, but it seemed to be common for people to not post enough information, so I put as much as I could think of.
I just converted over from Ubuntu, and so am quite new to this new system architecture. Please give me just a little patience I just installed 11.4 on my EEEPC 901. All works great, except the RT2860 wireless, which will search and attempt to connect, but does not ever manage to connect. All updates were installed through Ethernet, and multiple access points have been tried. I also have tried open connection with no encryption.

I have previously used linux mint, and I like it but I feel that slackware might give me more experience with the terminal, and more original linux ideas. I have kde up and running as far as a window manager, and everything seems to work except connecting to the internet. I have a linksys router. I usually use wifi, but I even tried connecting through an ethernet cord and that didn't work either. I have searched many different threads, but either they didn't address my specific problem, or I couldn't understand what was going on. I tried to configure using "netconfig", but I didn't understand what many of the prompts wanted. I entered a name and a domain name, and selected DHCP, but this did nothing.

So i figured theres got to be a way to identify networks, pluck one from the list, and use it.
I've recently acquired an old HP Pavilion ZT3000 and have decided to install Slackware, but I'm having trouble with the whole rc.inet1 configuration stuff. I've been able to connect to the internet manually with the following command:

(...and then use "dhcpcd" to get an ip address.)
As you can see, eth0 is my wireless interface. Not exactly sure why (the comp has a IR port,wifi and Ethernet.) I'm using a shared WEP key (I know the security implications of WEP). The key being shared is the reason restricted is a parameter in the iwconfig command. I've been trying to get it working through /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 but I can't seem to setup rc.inet1.config correctly I'm not sure where to set the key to "shared"
I've searched the forums and I could use the working iwconfig command with ./bash_profile as a startup script. This has the problem I need sudo (ie setup /etc/sudoer), which seems like a lot of work, when rc.inet should work. And it also has the problem of having to enter my password THREE times (login, sudo iwconfig and for sudo dhcpcd) which is horrible (and I don't even know how it would work when I set X to begin on startup again). I probably could also install "wicd" but having to ferry across files and trying to setup things without the internet is a pain.
i run into a very annoying thing, usually take less than a second to connect to the internet using pppoe-start but today after a new installation of slackware 13.1 take a couple of secs to connect.

i'm using kernel-generic-smp-2.6.33.4, i even rebuilt the rp-pppoe package but it's the same thing. same behaviour was also in the previous release using kernel 2.6.29.6 due the broken forcedeth in that version of kernel, but on ArchLinux using the same version of kernel works normally.
I have 10.10 32 bit and 64 bit live CDs. Using the 32 bit, I can easily connect to my wireless router. However, the 64 bit CD, while recognizing the wireless connection, will not connect. My computer is 64 bit capable (I ran Karmic and Lucid using 64 bit). I have a 802.11 WiFi using the rt2800pci driver. Any ideas on how to get the wireless working for 10.10 64 bit? I would like to install it, just leery of wireless problems.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have dell dimension 4700 I installed slackware 12.2 onto with the of making it a headless home network jukebox that I could ssh into and control via a crossover cable.From other posts I've seen, it looks like I just need to set up the IP addresses under the same netmask, and can use ssh then. On the slackware machine, it does not seem to recognize an eth device.

I've configured an openvpn server on a wrt54g using dd-wrt firmware. I can connect from the command line...at least it appears to connect, but I am unable to access any resources. Trying to use networkmanager's openvpn client fails every time. Everything I find googling relates to Ubuntu, so just for kicks I booted into my Ubuntu partition for the first time in months....and the wireless lan disappeared when I restarted network manager, which is why I don't use Ubuntu in the first place, so much for the "easier distros". I'm assuming there are people successfully connecting to openvpn servers from Slack. I could definitely use a pointer.
