I have a server running Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES (2.6.9.55.ELsmp). When it starts up I get the following error: Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel. Red Hat nash version 4.2.1.10 starting WARNING: can't access (null) exec of init ((null)) failed!!!: 14 unmount /initrd/dev failed: 2 Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
After that I got no response from the OS. I have the installation CD, so I tried to start the rescue mode, while going through the steps I received an error stating that mounting to /mnt/sysimage failed and that if I want to I can access a shell. I really don't know what to do from here

When using geeqie to browse a directory with .CR2 and .JPG files, the last pair of .CR2/.JPG is not shown in the list (on the left side of the UI). Moreover, after a few operations (PgUp/PgDn, etc.), I get:

I had been running Slackware64 13 almost since it came out and recently upgraded to Slackware64 13.1.Every thing looked to be working well until I tried to burn a DVD with k3B. It starts the burn process but then dies and says that "cdrecord has no permission to open the device".I was able to put in a DVD+RW and erase it without a problem, but when trying to burn to a DVD-R it stops and gives me the error.I checked cdrecord and it is owned by root in the root group.

The sc spreadsheet app doesn't really work in 64bits. It launches but you're unable to do anything with it, it's not possible to enter any values in the cells or do anything else. It works fine in 32bit though.
To make it work properly in 64bits, you can use this patch, borrowed from debian: http://salix.enialis.net/x86_64/13.1...changes-7.16-3
And there is also this patch to make DESTDIR work properly with the Makefile: http://salix.enialis.net/x86_64/13.1...-destdir.patch

I maintain my slackware by using slackpkg-current. When I upgraded to the new OpenSSH 5.4, I noticed that my key method (passwordless) doesn't work anymore. I checked and checked the conf files but everything looks fine.I tried debug but can't get it to work, here is the debug:

The FreeCAD slackbuild doesn't work. All the Slackbuilds for the dependencies worked.
Code:
checking for boost system library... yes
checking for X... libraries , headers
checking for host... linux-gnu
[Code]....
I don't know what to do. That's the configure file in /tmp/SBo. Even if I alter it then when I run the slackbuild script again it wipes the old configure file and loads in a fresh one from the .tgz package.
I think the problem has something to do with bash4 parsing differently than bash3 or something? I don't know.

I really like the way the ledger CLI accounting software works, but I cannot seem to get it to function correctly. I set my LEDGER_FILE environment variable to my text file. Whenever I use ledger the output is always formatted incorrectly. Heres an example: I can do ledger bal
results (replace $MONEY with actual numbers):
$MONEY ESC[34mAssets:CheckingESC[0m
ESC[31m$-MONEYESC[0m ESC[34mEquity:Opening BalanceESC[0m
That is the result I get. I am not sure whats wrong. There is also no man page for ledger or any kind of help with the -h flag.

I have the following line in my .Xresources, and it only works when I'm not running KDE:
Code:
XTerm*reverseVideo: true When I start up XTerm in Xfce, TWM, or any other window manager, I get the expected black background. When I launch XTerm in KDE, I get a white background, meaning that the reverseVideo setting is not taking effect. When I'm in KDE, launching XTerm with -rv does give me an XTerm with a black background. Obviously, having to add this switch every time I launch an XTerm in KDE is suboptimal, no matter how you try to automate it. Manually running xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources and then launching XTerm immediately afterwards does not make a difference.
If you're wondering why this is a concern, it's because all 256-color vim color schemes (xoria256, desert256, inkpot) require reverseVideo to be set so that XTerm launches with a black background. You get a black-on-black cursor otherwise.

I've been using Slackware for awhile now on my laptop without a single issue (well except that I can't get the screen brightness to change, but that's a separate issue).
I logged in today and went to the terminal and when I type the letter 'e' it is not shown or recognized. It works when I 'su -' and enter my root password which contains the letter 'e' twice, but otherwise is not recognized.
I have no idea where to even start with this problem. I've logged out and back in. I've restarted twice now, but the problem is not going away. Obviously, my keyboard is working properly as I am typing this message with the letter 'e', but in the Terminal it is not recognized.

I have a fairly fresh Slack install. When I start or shutdown X, the sounds that are supposed to play do. Also, sometimes everything else that is supposed to play sounds does.
However, sometimes the sound doesn't work for flash content or pidgin. I have never had a similar problem and I don't know where to start in resolving this issue.

when i load lilo, everything is greenish and weird, i tried to change the picture with Lilo.conf, fallowing the exact instruction given by linux forum, dosnt work. the linux logo got verry strange colors has well, verry ugly.
at first i tried to install my ati driver, but my x1800 is not supported anymore, so i decided to run xconfsetup to use the default ati driver. After that i have been in the xorg.conf generated by the setup and it seem they got the right driver, it say radeon in the device section. another problem i experience is that everytime i lod KDE my default resolution suck, and when i open the control panel and click on display, everything goes right.
the last problem is more serious, when i order my computer to shutdown either by command line or with the logout button, the screen goes black and nothing happen at all. Its sad beccause so far everything else seem to work fine, i installed my network card and my sound card properly.

I am playing with SalixOS which is supposed to be entirely compatible with Slack. I've never put Slack proper on this laptop. It's run Ubuntu and Mandriva both and the volume wheel always works. It does not seem to be recognized in Salix. I figure the fix will be the same in Salix as Slackware so I'm asking here. The laptop is an A205 Toshiba Satellite.

I'm trying to install slackware 32 bit 13.1.After loading kernel it asks for keyboard configuration, but keyboard (usb wireless) doesn't work.
Keyboard works on the old 13.0 installation, on bios and also in the boot options of 13.1 installation cd.
I've tried removing legacy usb support and changing usb2.0 speed from high to full. Nothing changed.
Anybody with this strange problem? (kernel of setup seems also to detect it correctly as a trust keyboard).

I have a display problem since updating to Slackware 13.37. Everything was fine on Slackware 13.1, but when I switched to 13.37 some piece of software came up with the wrong monitor size. I have a 1600x900 LCD monitor but the X screen came up as 1024x768 with blackness on either side of it. Under Slackware 13.1 the X screen came up as 1600x900 as it should without any prompting from me; I didn't even have an Xorg.conf file. I tried using the Xorg.conf file which was needed and work for older Slackwares, eg 12.*, but it didn't work. (Saying it didn't work is a gross understatement! That old Xorg.conf completely screwed up mouse, keyboard, and monitor; the screen was flashing and nothing worked. The only way to get control back was to SSH into the machine from my laptop and reboot. Killing the X server via that SSH console did NOT the flashing or get me back to my console login; only reboot worked.)
I find I can get the screen to be the right size manually by going through KDE's "System Settings" --> "Display and Monitor" --> "Size & Orientation", then disabling "LVDS1" and setting VGA1 to 1600x900. The size of my odd-sized monitor is being correctly detected for the "Auto" choice. Upon reboot LVDS1 stays disabled but VGA1 reverts to 1024x768 so I have to do this each time.I've done some search of the on-line literature regarding the error messages I am seeing in the boot log.
People are suggesting changing all kinds of things to alleviate the side effects of the "conflicting" error message above, even modifying GRUB parameters (which won't work for me since I use LILO).So, I have a manual work around which I must do each time I log in. Does someone know how I can get X or KDE to force 1600x900 upon start (while Linux/X/whoever find and fix the problem) or does someone know of a real fix?

When I installed my 64 bit system of Ubuntu 10.04 the sound worked very well and I were very happy. The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds. And when I type "pulseaudio" in the terminal it gives me this:

there's a program I have that doesn't really install, you extract it to its folder, cd into it, then ./filename to start it. It works fine on my Debian install. But when I do this on Slackware, it just says 'no such file or directory'. The file most definitely is there, since ls shows it. the filename is only three letters long so I know I'm not mistyping it. I've tried in user and su. Any idea why it won't run?

I'm having trouble getting compiz to work on my Laptop. It worked for a while and then I turned on Shift Switcher and a message popped up saying..."The new value for the button binding for the action Terminate in plugin Shift Switcher conflicts with the action Zoom Window of the Scale Addons plugin. Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?

I just recently (about an hour ago) installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on my old laptop, and I was greeted with the message, that unity could not be run due to some sort of missing driver...fair enough, I was then greeted with the default Ubuntu desktop, I installed all my needed software (wine, google chrome) and installed the missing display drivers. I then rebooted the system, and once again I am stuck with the default desktop, and not the Unity interface. I checked the software center, and it says Unity IS in fact installed.. And yet I cannot make it appear. So now I ask you Ubuntu veterans. How do I make it work?
P.S. I wiped the system of windows, and the computer is an old HP Pavilion DV6000

I recently ordered the Alienware Aurora from Dell and upgraded the video card to the Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 as I noticed that Nvidia offers a 32-bit driver for download.
Then I noticed that the system comes with Windows 7 64-bit so I am assuming that this is a 64-bit system.
My bottom line question is will I have to install Slackware 13 (64 bit) or will I have to stick with the 32-bit version since the Nvidia driver is compiled for 32-bit? This is a gaming machine so obviously I want to be able to realize the full potential of the video card.
If I have a choice, what are the pros and cons? I DO NOT want Windows so I'll be disappointed if I can't install Linux!
Below is my order list from Dell:
