Slackware :: Build - Change The Picture With Lilo.conf Doesn’t Work
May 5, 2010
when i load lilo, everything is greenish and weird, i tried to change the picture with Lilo.conf, fallowing the exact instruction given by linux forum, dosnt work. the linux logo got verry strange colors has well,verry ugly.
at first i tried to install my ati driver, but my x1800 is not supported anymore, so i decided to run xconfsetup to use the default ati driver. After that i have been in the xorg.conf generated by the setup and it seem they got the right driver, it say radeon in the device section. another problem i experience is that everytime i lod KDE my default resolution suck, and when i open the control panel and click on display, everything goes right.
the last problem is more serious, when i order my computer to shutdown either by command line or with the logout button, the screen goes black and nothing happen at all. Its sad beccause so far everything else seem to work fine, i installed my network card and my sound card properly.

I finally installed Slackware and now I have Windows, Slackware and Ubuntu in my laptop. I installed Ubuntu at the last order and at that time GRUB the default loader. But I feel that I'd like to use lilo more, so I booted into Slackware and run "lilo" and then lilo became the default loader.But then I cannot access Ubuntu anymore. Because in lilo there're no information about Ubuntu. So I added some information about Ubuntu according to that of Windows in lilo. But that failed. I still cannot access Ubuntu. I searched for the posts about this problem, and this is what they say:
Quote:
image=/ub/vmlinuz
label=ubuntu
read-only
root=/dev/sda7
initrd=/ub/initrd.img-2.6.28-13-generic
or something like this. But in my slack I cannot find the image or the initrd.

My thread "Can't add Ubuntu into lilo.conf" was merged with this one.That problem has been solved, As I solved that problem, I got several more questions: When applying the changes by run "lilo", there's a warning about "large-memory". How come and how to solve? When loading into lilo, there's a capital character "U" in front of "Ubuntu". At the same time, there's nothing in front of Slackware or Windows. I wonder why. And, now that lilo read the booting info from slackware, if sometimes slackware get collapsed, could I still be able to access lilo? If I can access lilo, can I still boot into the other OSes?

I've been trying to make install apache 2.1.8 and php 5.2.3 and work on them. After updating and installing some dependence files, apache and php could both be installed.
Then I tried to configure them. I added the following content to the end of Apache httpd.conf:
Code:
Then I run /path/to/apachectl start, and saw the message:
Quote:
Invalid command 'RewriteEngine', perhaps misspelled or defined by a module not included in the server configuration
Then I remembered that I didn't include the rewrite module while making install apache. So I removed the 2 lines I just added to httpd.conf.
But, after running /path/to/apachectl stop and start again, I could still see:
Code:
When I use firefox to open http://host_ip:8080/, I could see "It works!". But when I open http://host_ip:8080/hello.php (the file is already under htdocs), firefox said
Quote:
Failed to Connect
Why and how to solve it?
I noticed that for some stupid reason, the conf file wasn't updated at all and the 2 erroneous lines were still there.

I have Windows on sda1 and just installed Slackware on sda2. There also is a hda data drive, which usually appears first on drive lists. During installation, LILO gave an error (I tried installing both to MBR and root, both times the error was about something like "root: (N6").
Then I did the following
-boot with installation cd
-hugesmp.s root=/dev/sda2 rdinit= ro
-login

When I insert the xD card into the built-in 5 in 1 card reader of my laptop it doesn't work. An SD card for example does work with this reader, so it is not a "faulty hardware" problem we are talking about right now, and neither is a "HW is not recognized" kind of a problem. My card reader is seen as a
Code:0f:06.2 Mass storage controller: Texas Instruments 5-in-1 Multimedia Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS PRO/xD)in the lspci output.I use debian testing with a 2.6.32-trunk kernel (what is this "trunk" here anyway?)I know this isn't a unique problem and with a cheap external USB powered card reader (I have one) this whole thing can be worked around, but still.

I have freshly installed Slackware 13 64-bit.
After messing around last time trying to compile fglrx for my ATi card, I now understand it uses a built in radeon driver.
My question is this: how do I get X to recoqnise my custom xorg.conf file? I dropped it in /etc/X11 but to no avail.
HAL does it great job - but I need my xorg.conf as I have dual monitors which HAL doesn't configure correctly (displays mirrored, not stretched).

I have the same problem as described in [URL]. Apparently the solution is to add
PHP Code:
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA" to xorg.conf.
However my system apart from this works fine without xorg.conf. Is there a way to change the AccelMethod without an xorg.conf?

My network works before but now it has follow issue, when I ping google.com, I got Quote:
ping: unknown host google.com but my network still works partially because I can still connect to a DNS listed in my /etc/resolv.conf to get host google.com's ip adress by Quote:
host -t a google.com ip.of.one.dns and then I ping the returned IP result 66.249.89.104, the ping works fine. the issue is that I can't connect to Internet, what I can remember is that I ever removed /etc/resolv.conf and this file was created again by network-manager, and I already verified the two dns IPs listed in the resolv.conf are both correct and works fine with command host.

We recently moved all our Red Hat Linux machines from NIS to LDAP and we're seeing some issues with name resolution.
One thing I should mention is that DNS (the first nameserver in resolv.conf)is being used by LDAP for name resolution.
Now our resolv.conf file has always looked like this.
Search domainname.com
Search domainname2.com
Nameserver xx.xx.xx.xx
Nameserver xx.xx.xx.xxx
The problem is that the above resolv.conf file doesnt work anymore. The only way that our workstations get name resolution is by commenting out the second and forth lines, which happen to be our secondary DNS. This has got me confused because why would resolv.conf be broken by having a secondary nameserver and search path? Shouldnt it just use the first nameserver unless it fails to resolve? Almost seems like just having the secondary in the file breaks name resolution. I cant ping local hosts or anything on the internet unless I do this:
Search domainname.com
#Search domainname2.com
Nameserver xx.xx.xx.xx
#Nameserver xx.xx.xx.xxx

I find it very frustrating that documentation suggests using PEERDNS=no in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ ifcfg-eth0 in order to override resolv.conf information only to find out that both NM and network init scripts ignore DNS1, DNS2 and DOMAIN settings.So my question is how do I correctly configure resolv.conf settings that will persistently override dhcp information on a F12 system that has NM removed and uses the network service scripts?

I'm trying to install Puppy 525 on my Slackware 13.37 PC as a dual-boot using LILO. Puppy is living, all on it's own, in sda6, a 6 GiB partition. It got there by using the Puppy Universal Installer and selecting a 'Full' install, not a 'Frugal' install. I cannot find 'LILO' type instructions, only 'GRUB' type instructions.
Has anyone succeeded in doing a hard drive install of Puppy with the LILO boot loader?
Edit: I'll probably regret it, but I used Puppy's GRUB installer.

I'm fairly new to Linux so I'm going to need a step-by-step guide to get me out of this rut. The install of Linux was fine but when I booted up I got this error. VFS: Cannot open root device "302" or unknown-block (3,2) append a correct "root=" boot option;here are the available partitions;
0800 78150744 sda driver:sd
0801 47428608 sda1 <-- this is my Windows partition
0802 30719552 sda2 <-- this is my Linux partition
0b00 1048575 sr0 driver:sr
0b01 1048575 sr1 driver:sr
Kernel panic - not syncing:VFS:Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (3,2) I guessed from reading this error Lilo isn't pointing to the right partition to boot from? How will I fix this? I read another thread about boot problems on these forums and a guy said to do this:
#mkdir /slacktemp
#mount /dev/device /slacktemp
#chroot /slacktemp
#cd /slacktemp/etc <-- for me it told me that doesn't exist
#vi lilo.conf <-- couldn't do nothing and was frozen
#lilo -v -t -b /dev/device
#lilo -v -b /dev/device
The above solution did not work for me. Can anyone shed a light on a Linux rookie?

I just did a fresh install of slack 13.1 on a separate drive to the one I was previously using. I've been having trouble getting lilo to work, so that I can choose between either drive. Lilo is currently installed to /dev/sda, with the old system on /dev/sda1 and the new installation on /dev/sdb1. I keep getting errors like these:
Code: Fatal: Trying to map files from unnamed device 0x0011 (NFS/RAID mirror down ?)
I managed to install lilo from the old system by copying the kernel image from the new system into the /boot/ directory and running lilo. I am now on the new system and trying the same thing in reverse but it isn't working. I have searched around a bit and there's a lot of talk of chroot-ing into the other partition to run lilo. I don't understand why the process isn't working both ways though. I can't run lilo on my new installation even with the two kernel images in the local /boot/ folder. Is this something to do with btrfs or am I missing something to do with lilo? This is my lilo.conf file. I am trying to run lilo using this file from my new installation on /dev/sdb1 and getting the error given above.

Trying to install SW 13.1 (on DVD) on the following system: M/B Intel: DX38BT Processor Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 - 2.66GHz, 8MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB, Socket 775 Memory Corsair Dual Channel 8192MB PC10600 DDR3 1333MHz Memory (4x2048MB) Graphics Diamond Radeon HD 3850 Video Card - Viper, 512MB GDDR3, PCI Express 2.0 P/S Ultra 1000W
My goal is to install the i386 build on one partition and the 64-bit build on another. I have been away from Linux for a while and am sick to death of Win7, want to come home. :-}
Booted on i386 side of DVD, system freezes after a couple of lines that start with ATA2. Does not respond to 3 finger salute, ctrl-c, nothing. Have to press reset. I have tried both huge.s and hugesmp.s kernels
Booted on 64-bit side, comes up fine. I performed the install, selected for automatic lilo install. Lilo install hung but I was able to reboot. I booted off the 64-bit side again, entered the following: huge.s root=/dev/sde3 rdinit= ro It booted fully to the login prompt but the keyboard does not work, no input.

It starts the burn process but then dies and says that "cdrecord has no permission to open the device".I was able to put in a DVD+RW and erase it without a problem, but when trying to burn to a DVD-R it stops and gives me the error.I checked cdrecord and it is owned by root in the root group.

The sc spreadsheet app doesn't really work in 64bits. It launches but you're unable to do anything with it, it's not possible to enter any values in the cells or do anything else. It works fine in 32bit though.
To make it work properly in 64bits, you can use this patch, borrowed from debian: http://salix.enialis.net/x86_64/13.1...changes-7.16-3
And there is also this patch to make DESTDIR work properly with the Makefile: http://salix.enialis.net/x86_64/13.1...-destdir.patch

The FreeCAD slackbuild doesn't work. All the Slackbuilds for the dependencies worked.
Code:
checking for boost system library... yes
checking for X... libraries , headers
checking for host... linux-gnu
[Code]....
I don't know what to do. That's the configure file in /tmp/SBo. Even if I alter it then when I run the slackbuild script again it wipes the old configure file and loads in a fresh one from the .tgz package.
I think the problem has something to do with bash4 parsing differently than bash3 or something? I don't know.
