I spent all day learning some concepts of Samba which I left while preparing for RHCE.One of them is how to permanently mount (fstab entry) windows shared folder.Manually mount command is running fine for me.
View 6 RepliesI have everything networked properly, as far as I can tell, both computers see each other... I can use putty to port in and use my Linux machine (Debian 4). When I go to map network drive on my XP machine, I can see the computer, but not the shared folder. After some googling I found that i have to create my Windows user name ont he Linux machine as a user as well. Unforunately, that user is 'Administrator'. So I told Linux to force user, and it created it, and did smbpasswd command and added the user to the samba list. Still nothing.

The problem I am facing is, with the Samba server configuration.I have configured Samba server with a folder shared between server and client machines. I have tried downloading data from the shared folder on the server to the client machine which is successfully downloaded, however I am not able to upload any data to the shared folder in the samba server.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI mounted a shared windows folder from my LAN, and I changed the mount point's ownership on Linux using command line `chown me:me windir`. but when I enter the mount point, and to create files, it mentioned me 'Permission denied', but the file is actually created on the windows' folder, and its ownership is root:root.
this problem puzzled my programs going to run on it. cause them will detect a system returned error, and terminate in a abnormal way.

i gave full permission to that folders and subfolders and in smb file i gave readable writable browsable permissions. and i disabled se linux and firewall
i have installed nfs server on my redhat machine.when i want to mount shared data from client(suse)machine the following error occur. "mount.nfs: mount to NFS server '10.3.31.146:/home/usbtest' failed: System Error: No route to host" both machines ping each other successfully.

One entry I have put in fstab results in the failure of a partition to be mounted at boot time. I get the message:
Code: The disk drive for /media/WinXP is not ready yet or not present. Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery If I choose M and enter the command: Code:mount -t ntfs /dev/sdb1 /media/WinXP then I get no error message, but the partition still doesn't seem to be mounted, when boot completes.
I don't understand this failure. I have created my fstab file using UUIDs to boot Ubuntu on my dual boot machine. It works fine, booting from the hard-disk which is Master on my Secondary IDE channel. For Ubuntu booting the MBR and grub menu are on this disk. The default is to boot Ubuntu , but with an option to select Windows Xp.
As an aside, I can set an option in my BIOS to make the Master disk on the Primary IDE channel the first disk, rather than the second disk. Then the system boots from the MBR on this Primary IDE channel and boots only to WinXP. That works fine.
When running Ubuntu I use space on the Windows disk (on the Primary IDE channel) to hold backups of key Ubuntu files in case I loose Ubuntu - as I did for the past few days. So, to mount this partition I inserted this line into my fstab:

I don't even get an icon for the partition on my desk top. It appears in the 'places' menu, as unmounted, but mounts as soon as I click on it. However, this causes some of my linux apps, which want to load and save to this partition, to post an error message until I have manually mounted it via clicking on it in the Places menu. I want to avoid this manual step by having the partition automatically loaded at boot time. What am I doing wrong?
I am running SUSE 11.1 on a 80Gig IDE HDD, I have added a 160 SATA HDD which I wish to use as storage.
fdisk reports it as /dev/sda1 - W95 fat 32 LBA. What would the fstab entry be to make the disk mount automatically on boot, so that it shows on the desktop ready for use.
I have two computers running Ubuntu 9.10, both have one shared folder. These were set up via Nautilus.
On computer 1 I can see and use the shared folder of computer 2 just fine.
On computer 2 I can NOT see the shared folder of computer 1 anymore since recently. I has worked in the past.
Some more information: the name of computer 1 is "daniel", the share name is "gedeeld". So the address of the shared folder of computer 1 would be smb://daniel/gedeeld/
Opening this address in Nautilus works fine on computer 1 (that shares the folder), but results in an error on computer 2.

I want to have a shared folder mounted on startup and I put the following in my fstab:

Where did 1001 corresponds to the virtual share group.
When I boot up the permissions are as follows(from ls -l):

So I'm curious why it's group permissions aren't the same as owner? In the fstab I put dmask=002 which should lead to rwxrwxr-x so basically full permissions for owner and group and read/execute for public. However thats not what I'm getting. Also once I get this working correctly am I going to have an issue if the virtualshare group isn't a users primary group? On some older unix servers I ran into this issue, hopefully it won't matter as long as the user in in the group.
I have been having off and on issues with my samba file shares. I am sharing a NTFS formated hard drive where the mount point is in my home directory, as well as a printer connected via USB. I am to the point where printing works (using it as an ipp print share, samba is configured for it, but I don't know if it works or not), and I can access the shared folder from Windows, but I can't access the shared folder from any Ubuntu machine. I am sitting with a slight problem sharing some HP network printers (JetDirect) with my windows machines. I have cups 1.4.4 configured on my Debian PDC with samba 3.5.5. The printers in question, is configured in cups and is working perfectly, but for some reason when I try to add the printers from Win7 or Win Vista I get the following error:
"Connect to Printer Windows cannot connect to the printer Operation failed with error 0x00000006"
I had a look around and it seems that the above error code is tied in with incorrect drivers, but the strange thing is that if I create a new local port on the win machines and specify the shared printers they work. The problem then is that cups does not identify the jobs correctly. The job will be named something like "smbprn.00000264 Remote Downlevel Document" instead of the actual document name. One of the reasons for using cups is to be able to monitor printer usage so this option is a temporary solution in my mind. Can the print$ share be causing it although it is empty and no drivers has been uploaded? Neither the samba nor cups logs give me something concrete to work with (hopefully someone else can spot the problem).

It's been awhile since I posted anything which is a good sign my install has been working well and I have been able to handle most everything. However, I'm not able to handle this issue. I recently installed F11 and everything went well. But, when trying to see my other computers on the local network, I cannot. I receive this error message: Unable to mount location Failed to receive shared list from server. I understand the message as it is obvious, but do not know how to fix it.

It works, but there is a problem with it. Every folder and file has root:root ownership, so I am unable to change anything. Even when I change permissions manually, it does not work.
Now, I want to move this to fstab but have no idea how an fstab line should look like. Obviously, I want to also have rw access to the disk.

Same userid and groups set up on on both. I have taken two linux courses and can maneuver around fairly well, but am still pretty newbie at all this. We have loaded Samba on a server and created a Samba share. I AM able to access that share via Windows Vista, but have not been able to successfully mount the share on the Ubuntu desktop via the fstab file. I have tried the following ways: serverip:/path/shareddirectory /net ext3 user,sync 0 0 and the samba way..

After modifying fstab, I reboot. No luck since that either way.Only ONCE after modifying it samba way, I was prompted to enter credentials, but after login I was unable to view the files on the server. From this point on either way, if I run commmand 'mount -a' the response is "Special device serverip:/path/sharedirectory does not exist" Also! I am able to ping client-to-server, but not server-to-client.

I've recently installed Natty and now I've got a problem mounting two of my partitions via fstab. This is what my fstab file looks like:

I CAN mount them by first executing sudo umount -a (which tells me that the two partitions in question cannot be unmounted, because they are not mounted) and then sudo mount -a (which correctly mounts the two partitions). The mount does not work, if I omit the umount command.
Can anyone point me in the direction of setting up shares for windows machines on centos. I have found a few document but never managed to get it up and running correctly. I need to be able to get access to subfolder etc for different users. Is there any way of doing it with some sort of gui?

I haven't used Samba for a while now and as per the best of my knowledge, entire communication (including usernames and passwords) between a samba server & windows client machines will be plain text. Is there any way to secure all this communication??
Secondly, if i remember correctly, MS windows wont let me mount more than one samba shares as network disk when all my shares can be accessed by different smb users with different passwords?? is there a solution to this problem? OR may be if there is any other package available for this purpose so that i wont have to use samba?
I am trying to set up samba in my CentOS virtual machine that is running on a Windows 7 host. I have found a tutorial in the How-Tos on this site but I'm not sure if they are exact and I'm paranoid about messing something up. The link to the tutorial is below. I installed samba and set one of the folders on my desktop to share with my win7pc. However, I'm having some difficulty getting it to work. If anyone can provide some insight, I would be very grateful.
Both my ubuntu-pc and my win7-pc belong to the same workgroup. Each pc can ping the other. The ubuntu-pc can "see" that the win7 pc is part of the network; but it cannot communicate with the win7 pc. The Win7-pc does not show that the ubuntu-pc is part of the network.
I got a ftp server (proftpd on debian) on machine "A" and I got a Samba Server (debian also) on machine "B" with a shared folder called "public". how do I access the shared folder via FTP?
I already tried the following command:
mount -t smbfs //machine B/public /media/public
And the following message appears:

But the folder public is already shared cUz I can access it using Windows XP.

I have a Linux Box running Fedora 13, it has Samba installed, and I have configured it, I also have a Windoze 7 PC, I want to be able to access the Windoze PC's files from my Linux Box, and vice versa, but when I try to open the Windoze PC in the network on my Linux Box, it asks for my Username and Password, I enter them, the box goes away then pops back up asking for them again... and on the Windoze PC, I find my Linux on the network, open it, it asks for my username and password, I enter them, and it lets me in, but then when I try opening my shared folder, it gives me: "You do not have permission to access \LINUX Shared Folder. Contact your network administrator to request access".
