Server :: Have A OS Based On Debian Configured And Installed On A Machine That Controls All The Network?

Feb 23, 2011

I want to know something: i have a OS based on Debian configured and installed on a machine that controls all the network. Then, I can access it via another machine (with Windows for example) (connected by crossover cable or using a switch) by a web browser where I can do everything, including adding hosts, adding users, configure mail servers, voip, configure domains, etc etc etc..I would like to install Nagios on my server but I would like to monitor the hosts, routers that I have on the network using the Windows machine. How can I do that? Isn't it supposed to access the nagios information only in the machine where it is installed?

Ubuntu Networking :: Machine Lost Controls Over Network Cards

Jan 14, 2011

I'm running xubuntu 10.04 LTS (upgraded from 8.04 LTS) on an old low power sempron machine as an always on 'internet machine' i.e. it does all my downloading email etc. and up until yesterday it has always performed flawlessly. Yesterday wasn't its fault, it was a BTI network problem that took out my internet service but while talking to tech support I realized that this machine has lost all ways to control the network cards. Network-manager and network-manager-gnome are installed according to synaptic but they have no menu or notification appearance. I've tried reinstalling them to no avail.

Server :: Fdisk Does Not Like Md Devices On Machine Since Configured A Raid And Made Changes To Main Workstation

Mar 24, 2011

It's been a while since I configured a raid and have been making some changes to my main workstation/server.
fdisk does not like md devices on my machine... always says it has an invalid partition table. While this is said to be normal all over the net, I don't feel warm and fuzzy about that fact. What is best practice these days, to create a non-partitionable md device or a partitionable mdp device?

If I create a partitionable md device, I would imagine it would look good in fdisk. However, I am concerned about growing the array afterward. I would then have to grow the array, redefine the partition, and then grow the file system. The PITA factor goes up. Has anyone worked with both? Pro/Cons? My array was created with:

mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=5 --force --raid-devices=3 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1

FYI: I have backups. I understand RAID 1 may be a better choice of raid level.

Programming :: VBA / Excel - Looping Through Image Controls Based On Cell Contents?

Jun 28, 2011

I have an Excel Spreadsheet which reports upon weekly performance. One portion of the worksheet looks at week over week increases /decreases. I've placed a number of image controls (15 in Total) next to cells which calculate week over week change. The image controls simply display an image depending on whether the value of the adjacent cell is positive or negative. So, here is my basic working IF statement:

Code:

Private Sub Worksheet_Change(ByVal UpDown As Range)
If Range("J26") > 0 And IsNumeric(Range("J26").Value) Then
Image1.Picture = LoadPicture("C:path oup_arrow.gif")
ElseIf Range("J26") < 0 And IsNumeric(Range("J26").Value) Then

[code]....

As you can see, this is pretty simple. What I'd like to do is find a way to loop through all 15 controls and avoid having 15 IF statements run on the Worksheet_Change() event. The cells containing the week over week values are all in the same column, but not continuous. Involved cells are: ("J26", "J27", "J33", "J34", "J35", "J36", "J37", "J38", "J39", "J40", "J42", "J43", "J44", "J45", "J46")

Debian Installation :: Use The PC As A File Server With Two Drives Configured As A RAID 1 Device?

Nov 3, 2010

I just installed Debian 5.0.4 successfully. I want to use the PC as a File Server with two Drives configured as a RAID 1 device. Everything with the RAID device works fine, the only question I have belogs to the GRUB 0.97 Booloader. I would like to be able to boot my Server even if one of the disks fail or the filesystem containing the OS becomes corrupt, so I configured only the data partitions to be a RAID 1 device, so on the second disk should be a copy of the last stable installation, similar to this guide:[URL]...

Server :: Allow Wireless Clients Access To Network Based On Their MAC Address?

Jan 11, 2011

Using CentOS 5.5, FreeRADIUS 2.1.7.

Objective is simply to be able to allow wireless clients access to my network based on their MAC address (I have about 10 WAPs around the country which I need to be able to manage user access centrally). Not interested in LDAP or dishing out keys/certificates etc.

I have been trying to follow the guide here. Sounds like it's exactly what I need but I'm not sure about a few things.

1) For each of the conf files am I supposed to be replacing everything currently existing in the respective file with what is suggested?

2) "raddb/modules/file" does not exist, so I assume I should use "raddb/modules/files"?

3) If I uncomment the line:

Code:
#rewrite_calling_station_id
under the "raddb/sites-available/default authorize{}" section, the radiusd startup gives me the following error:
/etc/raddb/sites-enabled/default[69]: Failed to find module "rewrite_calling_station_id".

If anyone familiar with FreeRADIUS 2 could answer these queries I might be on the right path

Server :: Ubuntu Based Network Drive Drops Out After 2 Mins With USB Adapter Not For LAN

Mar 10, 2010

I have an Ubuntu-based fileserver, which I have set up and works fine for 5 computers (Windows & Linux based). I have one computer, on Windows, which when I map as a network drive it works and I can transfer small files using the USB adapter. However, when copying over a large file, after 2 mins or so it comes up with the error "Specified network name cannot be found". However when plugged in using Ethernet, it will work fine.

What is even stranger is when I set it up as an FTP server rather than SAMBA, it will happily transfer a 4gb file on the USB adapter, which possibly knocks out driver issues (I have tried 2 different drivers, am currently using Linksys one from website - WUSB300N) AND perhaps the issue lies on the Linux server side with setting up the SAMBA server? However I do have another one of these adapters that works fine, but it is on WIN XP HOME with a custom network logon script (as HOME won't remember passwords after restart). BUT it does work on another computer with XP PRO as network place, so I tried network place on this one, and it still doesn't work.......

OpenSUSE :: Installed Ok And X Configured KDE Desktop With Default 1024x600?

Apr 1, 2010

I've had a go with a netbook and 11.2. Installed ok and X configured KDE desktop with default 1024x600.

Minor. Most apps on running fit between top and panel but then you run their menu item like 'settings' or 'prefs' and its window size is coming up >600 in height. Some allow a scrollbar on the right but for those not, the result is not seeing the 'ok, apply, cancel' buttons. I did find that changing certain font sizes under System Settings both up and down and re-logging in sorted that for most.

If you click the top-left icon on a window you get to the special window settings and can see and change the geometry. However, for some that didn't respond to the font change above and seem to be hardcoded geometry-wise for a 1024x768 minimum, the result is a "squashed" window. Certain button options seen in the normal window are not there or the items are overlayed on each other.

Specific is Okteta the hex editor.Major. I don't use a wheelscroll mouse on other pcs. This netbook has a trackpad with the rightside 7mm or so having a scroll facility. In editor or Firefox running a fingertip on it will scroll the pages which is nice instead of looking and clicking in the scrollbar.

What is NOT nice, I found, is that if the cursor arrow is over a desktop patch and my finger hits that 7mm part of the trackpad when I want to move the arrow, it results in switching between desktops. I wondered what the hell happened when the apps and console I had up disappeared then reappeared then.OK this is the wonderful KDE4 where you can do anything and customise as you like. Well no, not about this. Funnily enough it shows up in the KDE handbook help about being an option in the desktop numbers section but of course isn't there. A fallback entry from previous help version it seems.

I've seen, and have some to make of, the general KDE4 crits but this one's a real WTF. So desk users with a wheelmouse doing some critical reading of some file or webpage could have that rudely interrupted just because their hand moves inadvertently? OK, maybe I should direct at KDE people, but is this fixable in the supplied 11.2 KDE4 or later KDE4.x ?

General :: How To Find Out What Options A Library Was Configured With When It Was Installed

Nov 24, 2010

Is there a way to find out with what options a library was configured with when it was installed? I am trying to install a library on my system that depends on gasnet and it requires me to configure it with the very same options that gasnet was configured with. Gasnet was not originally installed by me, so I cannot tell. I can see bin/, include/, lib/ and share/ directories in the gasnet folder and no other information in it. To be specific, I need to use the same CFLAGS that were used during installation of gasnet. For example, if it was installed using '-g -O2', I have to make sure I use the same CFLAGS here.

Server :: Modifying Debian Config Through Web-based Interface?

Jun 25, 2010

I am wanting some pointers/direction as to how I could run a administrative web service on our debian box to facilitate the management of the debian server (ie, creating iptable rules, modifying interface parameters, viewing dhcp leases).

I'm trying to replace an existing redhat server on our network which is performing as a gateway (unfortunately not meeting our needs) and this has a web-based management. It appears to be running 'asp' pages but these pages provide me no leads as to how it actually modifies the server's conf files.

Ubuntu :: Network Manager Applet - Wifi/mobile Controls Disappear And Reappear

May 7, 2010

I upgraded from 9.0X to 10.04 on my Sony Vaio VGN-TZ398U which has an internal Sprint mobile broadband card. The card operates properly along with the wireless. The problem that I am having since upgrading is that the Network Manager Applet icon that looks like a cell phone bar display does not show in the notification area at all unless there is a known wireless (wifi) network nearby.

Clarification: If I am in my car, the icon does not show which then makes it impossible to connect using the mobile broadband functions of the Network Manager Applet ( version 0.8 ). If I am in my office with a known wireless network, the icon shows and then I can switch to the mobile card.

I have tried removing the notification area from the panel and adding it again. I have done the same with the indicator applet. Neither has solved this problem.
