Ubuntu :: Configuring 9.10 As Client To Use Samba/LDAP Server For User Authentication?
Jan 18, 2010how to make a new Ubuntu 9.10 box use our LDAP/Samba server for user authentication. Our Red Hat and Windows machines all use it just fine. I've been trying to use the auth-client-config and libnss-ldap packages for this purpose, but I must be missing something. I'm pretty green with LDAP, so this is my first time diving in... Is there a good How-To or step-by-step read on this? All of my searches lead me to setting up Ubuntu as the server, and that isn't what I want. I've also tried the steps listed in [URL] for the LDAP Authentication section.

following are configuration files on ldap server

i am able to import this ldif file into database.also when i perform the ldapsearch on this server with command"ldapsearch �x �W �D �cn=manager, dc=example, dc =com� �b �dc=example, dc=com�" i get correct output.
but when i am trying to search from another client machine, i am getting "error ldap_sasl_bind(SIMPLE): Can't contact LDAP server (-1)"
also when i configured address book on mozilla on server., it is working fine.but not working on another machine.is any configuration is missing on client machine.both ldap server and client are configured on rhel4es without any firewall or selinux.

Sep 8, 2009I installed CentOS 5.2 and then run yum update. I configured this server as LDAP/Samba primary domain controller. LDAP seems to be OK and for testing I am able to create users with:smbldap-tools useradd -am usernameI can ssh into the server as root and also as a Linux user which was locally created in the server. But ssh into the server as LDAP user fails (from a Fedora 11 machine) with "Permission denied, please try again", prompting again for password.Some data:

Jun 11, 2011I configured openLdap in RHEL5 on virtual achines,everything is working fine, I created a user called ldapuser,in LDAP server and i created a home directory for ldapuser in my LDAP client, now i can able to login to the both Server and client with ldapuser account....
Now here what am expecting is i want to export my server's home directory to the client, i dont want to create home directories manually in the client machine, i googled about that, and it can be done through autofs.....
what need to be done on the client and server side.

Dec 6, 2010I have a FreeBSD server that is joined to an AD domain via winbind. Windows servers are administered by other guys (I have no admin access to them).smbd version: 3.0.23c The BSD system is joined to the AD, wbinfo -u shows domain users correctly. However: autentication of the users with the AD has stopped to work today:

I suspect that others who do not have a unix and samba account can print as guest, however, their xps either fail to try to connect with their real username first (as they did before), or samba fails to put that into the corresponding environment variable. A lot of problems, and everything was OK last friday on the same system.
Edit1: All these problems were related to the fact that my version of winbind used a win2008 dc, with which it has some incompatibilities, preventing successful user authentication. I have set "password server = <ip of a win2003 dc>" and the problems disappeared.
OpenSUSE Network :: Setup A LDAP Server Using The Yast-LDAP Server Configuration Tool
May 31, 2010we have a weird problem with our opensuse 11.2 server installation.
We want to set up a LDAP Server using the Yast-LDAP Server configuriation tool.
This indeed already worked weeks ago until....this week.
Maybe some updates??!
I do not know what happend exactly. The server just does not want to start again and throws following error:
Starting ldap-serverstartproc: exit status of parent of /usr/lib/openldap/slapd: 1 failed
This happend after a little check of the configuration, but without a change, with Yast. Google delivered only "reinstall your box"-answers.
So.. i did that. And now the "mystical" part: The SAME ERROR occurs with a fresh vanilla system with a brand new and simple configuration (certificats, database, pw...the first Yast config dialog...). I did not change the way i set it up.
I remember, when i did this the first time with 11.2 on that machine, when no problems occured...everything was running out of the box (except the "use commen server certificate" option...).

Ubuntu Networking :: VPN Client And Samba/SSH Server On One Physical Machine?
Jun 3, 2010I'd like to access a samba/SSH server which itself is connected to a VPN Server, therefore acting as a VPN Client. As soon as the VPN Connection is established, samba and ssh connections to this VPN Client get a timeout. But not all of them.
To get a better understanding I made an overview. The first one is a general network overview, without any VPN Connection, the second one with the VPN Connection established.
Network Overview without VPN
I can access the server in several ways:
*From the router via ssh (router runs ipcop with busybox)
*From the laptop via ssh (putty via Windows 7)
*From the laptop via samba
*From the internet via ssh (port forwarding to the ssh server)
Everything is working as it should.
Now the server that runs ssh and samba service connects to a VPN Server on the Internet, this is also working fine. Now it gets weird. The only samba/SSH connection that is still working is ssh directly from the router to the server. Everything else gets a timeout:
*From the laptop via ssh (putty via Windows 7)
*From the laptop via samba
*From the internet via ssh (port forwarding to the ssh server)

Why is that? It seems from the little understanding I have of vpn and networking, that incoming packages (like samba request from the laptop) don't get send directly back over eth0 but over the vpn connection. This seems somewhat logic, BUT ssh from the router is still working. Why from the router and not from the laptop? I really can't get my head around it.

tldr; One Client acts as VPN Client and samba/SSH Server. As soon as the VPN Connection is established samba/SSH stop working, but only partially.
Networking :: Samba PDC - Client Machine Create New Profile When Server Down
Dec 14, 2010I have set samba domain. I am able to add win 7 and xp clients. All r working fine. But I have a doubt. If I shutdown the samba pdc server, I should be able to login the client machine with the same profile (which I had, when the samba pdc server was up). Now , if I shutdown the sambapdc, I am able to login the client machine, but new profile is being created. How to avoid this.
How to say to samba that the client machine should load the same profile which was created when the server was up and running. I do not want the client machines to create new a profile when the server is down bcoz in windows domain, when the windows domain is shutdown, the client machines are able to login with the same profile (the profile which was created when the domain was up). I wish to have same thing in samba pdc also.

Ubuntu Networking :: Samba Client - Failed To Retrieve Share List From Server
Apr 15, 2010I have been using Ubuntu sense about 6.10 and never had to network with a Windows computer before. I have a decent understanding of Linux itself but I am having issues with this samba client. I have a clean install of Ubuntu 9.10 and am trying to use samba to access my shares on a Windows XP(SP3) computer. I am on the network just fine, and all the computers on the network have static IP addresses. When I go to Places->Network->Windows Network I see the "TITANNET" workgroup, (Even before I changed my workgroup to "TITANNET" in the smb.conf file.), but when I try to access it I get this error:

P.S.[0] I tried using /etc/init.d/samba restart but it did not work, I am not sure I am even running the samba server. (Well, it is obvious I am not, what I really mean is what am I running to (not =D)access the shares on my Windows PC.)
P.S.[1] I know that this has probably been posted before. I have searched and searched, I am about 1.5 pots of coffee and 4 hours into this.

May 7, 2011On this moment i configure a testenvironment with 1 Microsoft active directory server and 1 Opensuse 11 samba filesharing server. But i have a issue. The samba server is add to the domain and the servers can communicate with eachother. I can login to the domain on the samba server and the LDAP settings tab on yast2 samba configuration tool tell me that samba and the MS LDAP server can communicate with eachother. I can see the shares on the samba server but i can't autenticate myself. When i whant to logon than see i always "domain: domainname.local" and "access denied". My question is now how can i give the MS administrator account rights to view the shares and configure the rights for the other users.Samba config file

May 2, 2010I am facing problem in adding new users in ldap server and client for a long time. I configure ldap server and client successfully and I can login the client machine by a user. User is created on server during configuring the server but after same time when I create a new user on server and create a home dir for the same user on client machine and assign 700 permission on home dir of same user and copy the /etc/skel/.* /home/user-dir and when run the command "#chown -R user:users /home/user" it shows invalid user error.

Jan 27, 2010I have a server and a few clients set up with LDAP and NFS. All user files and logins are on the server, and I can login as a normal user on any client and get to my files. However, if I log in as root on a client, I can't write in root-owned directories on the NFS. I suppose that client-root and server-root are different.
Question: is there some way to convince the LDAP or that client-root and server-root are the same?

Aug 9, 2010why i can't login on the ldap-client via ldap, so here is a short description of my machines (i use openvz virtualising)I have on the HN (Debian Lenny) 2 VE's, which are in the same subnet (192.168.1.0/24)The first VE (Hostname: ldap1, IP: 192.168.1.91) is the ldap-server, which is so configured, that i can manage the server via phpldapadmin.The second VE (Hostname: ftp1, IP: 192.168.1.31) is the ldap-client, there should run a sftp-server in the future and the sftp-server(ssh-server) should use ldap-usernames to login. on the ftp1, i get with this command getent passwd the users configured on the ldap-server, but with the command id USERNAME the result is, that the user doesn't exist. (USERNAME is this name, i get returned by getent) and if i try to login via ssh, i get permission denied. and because the machines are openvz-virtual-machines, so i can't login on them like on a normal system, but a su USERNAME doesn't work too, because the user is not known on the system.

i don't think, that the ldap-server is the problem, because the phpldapadmin and getent on ftp1 are working perfectly, but if you want, i can post the config here too. the VE ftp1 was configured with the following how-to: [URL] and pam is configured like in the chapter "PAM setup with pam_ldap" on [URL]

I can add the client PC (Windows XP SP3) with the Domain Admin user (Manager) from the client PC, but when i try to add a user I get this message "The trust relationship between this workstation and primary domain failed", so as it can be added later I ignored this message and choose 'close' and reboot the PC. 2. Since the login screen is showed, the message 'Duplicate name exists on the network' appears. CentOS 5 Server :: Ldap - Ldapsearch And Getent Works From Client But Cannot Login
Jan 26, 2009So I've configured ldap on Centos5 64 bit and I can run "ldap search" and "gentent passwd" on the client/server and it shows my users info.
But I can't login via the cli or GUI.
I can login by doing;
su - username
at the client or server but I can't login by issuing;
login username
or at the GUI login screen.
