CentOS 5 :: Difference Between The Boot.iso And Netinstall.iso Images?
May 1, 2009
What is the difference between the boot.iso and netinstall.iso images? I've looked at the wiki and done some Googling, but haven't found a good answer yet. I know it is probably going to be something obvious, but in the context of installing a Xen fully virtualised guest there doesn't seem to be much difference. After booting both ask for the location of the install tree and proceed happily.

I am trying to install 5.3 using net install disc, where it hangs for over 30 minutes trying to retrieve stage2.img. Second time. After first time and waiting over 25 minutes, I tried Debian net install on another box, and it's done with installation long ago, while this one is still hanging (and from the looks of it I doubt it will continue).
1. Network is good, the box pings, network parameters are good, Debian worked flawlessly with same parameters
2. It did pull all it needed before stage2.img
3. Plenty of RAM in the box, over 3 GB
4. The box needs no additional drivers (except newer version of kernel as vanilla still doesn't have a complete support for Intel DP43TF board), distro has them all

I want to install CentOS from netinstall CD, but it doesn't work for wireless connection, because it just looks up for eth0 connection. Well, I connected server to wired USB connection and it's named eth1. I want to use netinstall CD but using eth1 connection. Is there any way for doing it?

My ISP has a bad habit of killing nearly all sustained FTP transfers (reset packet to my router and the remote host) and I need to install CentOS 5.5 on an older pc that doesn't have a DVD drive. My solution would be to (temporarily) turn on IIS on my laptop and extract the contents of the DVD to the ftp dir, but do I simply just drop everything in there with the same directory structure as the DVD or is there a particular way I should set up the directories?

I have burned the centos 5.4 i386 netinstall CD. It boots fine, but when I specify what mirror I want to use to install from, it gets caught in an endless loop. i have tried multiple mirrors and even tried both HTTP and FTP.
When I CTRL+F3 this is what I see:
"INFO: transferring [URL] to a fd"
ERROR: cannot determine address family of dist1.800hosting.com"
And then it just repeats over and over. I have looked at several mirros and I don't see that updates.img present at any of them.

I like Arch so far. The first time I installed Arch, everything went fine. I had a good openbox/SLIM configuration, but for some reason I just got a black screen w/ a mouse that didn't move whenever I tried to use the radeon driver (which works with my card). Anyways, I uninstalled Arch and reinstalled Fedora, but after my second attempt to install Arch (I have nothing better to do), arch suddenly wouldn't boot at all after a netinstall. Doing a core install went fine, but when I tried to update it and reboot, the same thing happened as the netinstall: The screen goes on standby and the CPU is spiked at %100 (I know this because my fan goes to full speed when the CPU jumps up too high - long story).
Not even doing that Skinny Elephants trick worked, so I'm guessing it was a complete kernel panic. I don't exactly know how to check for logs when the system is unbootable, but in retrospect I coulda just booted into a livecd. I just looked in /var/log of a recent Arch install on this computer, and there doesn't seem to be anything there. A file called 'lastlog', but I'm not sure it's anything. I can't open it with gedit or cat, so I'm assuming it's a garbage file. Adding 'nomodprobe' into menu.lst in Arch allowed it to boot, but I could only use the vesa driver with Xorg (using radeon caused a black screen showing only a cursor), which isn't ideal.

I'm an admin for a large (768-node) cluster of Apple Xserve G5s. We've been running Fedora, but we'd like to switch to an LTS release of Ubuntu for various reasons. I can boot the Lucid netinstall kernel (32- or 64-bit) with yaboot, which appears to correctly transfer the kernel and initrd, but when the kernel tries to unzip the initrd, it fails with "EOF while reading compressed data". I'm using the same yaboot binary we've been using for Fedora; the Fedora netboot image works a little differently but the file sizes are comparable.
I attempted the Karmic image to compare, and it boots, loads the initrd, and goes happily on its way, modulo an unrelated mistake of mine. The relevant yaboot stanzas look like this:
Code:
image=ubuntu/vmlinux-64.karmic
label=ubuntu-karmic-node
initrd=ubuntu/initrd-karmic-64.gz
initrd-size=18914
root=/dev/ram
[Code]...
Apart from our site changes (we're using the Kickstart support in d-i to smooth the transition), this is copied from the sample files on ports.ubuntu.com. Has anyone else seen similar problems?

I tried to load CentOS on another system last night. I used the same cd I used on my previous system and now when I run the test it fails and wont load the os. I tried to burn another set and same results. I there a know good mirror I can try and re-download the ISO again to see what going on. I loaded xp just to see if it was my drive and xp and and livecd fo CentOS works fine. So I dont think its a cd issue. I used the same drive to burn all the cd too. I tried the gui and the text version.
On the text version I get some error about mounting the cd and tty2 or something like that. This happens after I enter in all my disk/networking info and it is trying to do the load. The gui version when it starts up seems OK then it says starting x server and then I get a blank screen with a big X cursor but never get the screen to enter in info. No I have not tried the cd on another system yet as I don't have one that I can risk wiping out. But if I have to I will get an old drive and put it in my laptop and see if it boots.

I know there are similar topics about this that have been posted, but the information I need I cannot find. Im in a situation where I have two new HP DL360 G6 servers, both have a HP Smart Array B110i Sata Raid Controller. Since the raid controller is so new CentOS 5.3/5.4 and RHEL 5.3/5.4 do not have support built into the installer.I do have a driver for the raid controller which I have used and successfully installed CentOS 5.3 on one of the systems.The reason I need to customize an ISO is because I need the raid controller driver as part of the installation disc. As these systems are servers and are going to be deployed remotely I will not have physical access to these systems if they need to be rebuilt. I also have to build machines remotely as well using iLO (having a floppy image or usb image of the drivers does not work through iLO).
The installation rpm's can be as is, I do not need to make any changes there. I just need to make sure that the raid controller driver is loaded into memory from the media rather than another media source, before the installer kicks in.

I recently migrated to a newer server running centos5 and cpanel
I have imagemagick installed
I installed freetype as well
Most images display fine on web pages for accounts on the server, however, .gif images do not display.All I get is an image placeholder.
.png are fine
.jpg are fine
I have not tested all the possible varieties of images, but .gif I know is not displaying.I am sure its some kind of RPM I am missing or a configuration problem.

While playing a bit (fdisk) with a new machine (Intel 2 Duo E6750) that I have (with 2 SATA disks), I found a "strange" thing. If I boot the server from a Knoppix distro, fdisk sees 2 scsi HDD devices (sda and sdb). Ok, this was the expected. But if I boot the machine with the centOS 5.2 x86_64, while doing the partitioning the disks are recognized as hda and hdb, that is, IDE disks.

I am running Linux from a DVD, not installed. I am not good with installing software, but since the DVD cannot be corrupted, I am content to operate this way. Lately, I have been having problems that previously did not occur. When I try to click on the checkbox to get rid of emails, it doesn't register in most cases, or when it does, I am clicking multiple times so it registers twice, meaning it is unchecked again. Even more frustrating is some issues that are affecting my ability to update my business. I am trying to modify spreadsheets (text not calculations).
Whenever I try to click & drag to select something to change, it keeps jumping around to select only some of what I want, something else or some combination of the 2. When I try to copy and paste several fields from 1 column to another, everything from the several fields in the source column ends up together in the last field in the target column. I am also trying to download some images from a website. There is a single column of links to the images. I have to click on the link to get to the image in order to copy it, then back out to continue looking for more links to do the same.
My computer keeps jumping back 2 steps, then forward 2 steps, and sometimes I lose my place in that list. I could deal with it if it were a small number of links, but this is a list of probably close to 20,000 links. Again, i am operating off of a live DVD so this should not be corruptible, but this has just started happening, and has been an issue the last several sessions.

I am a fairly experienced ubuntu/linux user. But i can't seem to fix my current system, and i really dont want to reinstall as of all custom software i use.My main goal was resizing my / paritition with gparted. THe tutorial said to remove the boot partition (200 MB EXT4) and remove the SWAP, and then resize the partition. THis all worked out well. After booting a live CD i reinstalled grub. Try to boot and it drops me to the grub shell.I tried several things, like reinstalling grub. But this is not the problem. The problem is my /boot only contains a grub directory. No bootimages or configfiles whatsover.Is there a way to restore these like redownloading an image or putting in a apt-get command to download a new config?

I know that ImageMagick's convert program can be used as follows to convert a collection of images -- say, in PNG format -- to a PDF file:
convert *png output.pdf
The problem with this is that each image is then stretched to fit on one page, whereas I would like to keep the original dimensions of the images and put as many as possible on one page in the PDF file before moving on to another page.

i just finished installing CentOS 5 in my laptop. While I was trying to configure my Wireless network to connect internet, I found a guide in CentOS site which recommended to start "NetworkManger" service so as to setup wireless network. I followed and it Worked great.
But i would like to understand the difference between "Network" service and "NetworkManager" service. I had initially thought restarting "Network" service would help. explaining the basic difference between these 2 services.

I'm running Debian testing, and when I boot up my netbook, I see in the GRUB menu that there is Linux kernel 2.6.32-trunk-686, Linux kernel 2.6.32-5-686, and Linux kernel 2.6.32-3-686..
What is the different between the three? Linux 2.6.32-trunk-686 is at the top of the list and that's what I let load first.

I have a system with a missing or damaged kernel and I need to reinstall some software to fix it (see this thread for reference removed xen and kernel is gone). I feel fairly certain I can fix my system with the info in that thread however I don't know if this was a 32bit or 64bit system. How can I tell after using the dvd and linux rescue or does it even matter?

I am just spent half an hour hunting for a thing that should be totally available already:USB install images of Ubuntu, knoppix and all the others.And, the only good way are so far complicated tutorials where you extract the stuff from an CD image. Why??Hasn't everybody notices that CDs/DVDs are vanishing big time? That more and more systems don't have the readers anymore? Instead of following a 10 point instruction list, it would be nice to just be able to download a Ubuntu 8.10 or whatever USB image and be able to beam that DIRECTLY to a USB stick with a dd command.
Or am a missing something here? Does this exist?It should by no means be mariginal, considering how important USB stick in specific and flash memory in general have become.

I messed up my install so now I can't boot it. I get errors. I doubt I'll be able to fix it. I messed up the upgrade of the kernel images... I'm not sure whether there's something I could do in the Grub config file... I have one other Linux OS I can use in the meantime (plus Windows OS) so I thought maybe boot that up and check the Debian partition in case there's any files I want to save/keep. If I re-install, is Debian Squeeze LXDE still a good choice? I'm going to install something different in the partition where the other Linux OS is. Right now, it's grub is handling the boot loader. The computer is an old laptop, a Thinkpad T41. The HDD is 160GB.
