I have and IBM e-Server, with 256RAM, however when I force the fedora installation to be perfomr in grapgical mode, Anaconda return a message that say that I dont have enoght Memory to perform the graphical installation. To my uderstanding It requiere 192MB of Memeory for a graphical installation.
What I'm doing wrong?, or is that the vmlinuz is booting into RAM and taking most of the space?
I use Linux (Gentoo) since many years. I always used gentoo-kernels which I configured and compiled. Once it was done I usually got a "vmlinux"-file and a "bzImage"-file. I always used to copy the "bzImage"-file to my boot partition and I configured Grub accordingly and everything was fine.
Last week I compiled in my VM not only gentoo-kernels, but as well a xen-kernel (for my domU). Once it was done compiling the Xen-kernel (used the usual command "make -j2 && make modules_install") it didn't generate a "bzImage"-file, but a "vmlinuz" file. I therefore took the vmlinuz-file, copied it as usual to the boot partition and configured Grub to use that one, but with this time Grub doesn't want to boot and returns each time the error

I tried with both "vmlinuz" and "vmlinux" but neither worked. I have no clue what I should to - should I try to somehow generate a "bzImage" (tried "make bzImage" after a "make clean", but it tells me that it doesn't find any bzImage to create), convert vmlinux/z to bzImage or make Grub somehow boot using vmlinuz?
Are there any "tricks" to make Grub boot using a vmlinux/z?
I can say that it's not a problem of the partitioning or setup config in Grub, as in the same grub.conf I have other 2 kernels (bzImage) which boot without problems only the config section that has to do with the vmlinuz/x doesn't want to boot.
I have ubuntu install on a 500 gb drive. It says i have 409 gb free. I've been able to account for 40 gb, but when I try to check the folder proc, it lists 128 tb. How much space is this folder actually taking up?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently made the dumb mistake of using tar to make a backup of my "/" on my "/" when my "/" didn't have near enough space to store the backup. I received a warning message, so I canceled the terminal process and used nautilus to delete what amount of the backup had already been saved. That didn't seem to free up any space on my "/" like it should have, though. In an effort to find any hidden trash files that needed to be deleted, I used this terminal command:

The m/b is Sis 741/5513, fairly new and supports usb boot. I loaded Puredyne (Boot from dvd, select install, and point it at the usb and let it install there). Booting I just got
Searching for Boot Record from USB RMD-FDD ..OK, with 00 on very right Nothing more, so I left that, and ran
dd if=caine1.5.iso of=/dev/sdb1
and just stuck an iso on the beginning of the drive, hit F11, and the usb drive appears in the boot menu. All good; Select to boot from that. Surely an iso is a safe thing to boot from?. Yet I get the very same Searching for Boot Record from USB RMD-FDD. .OK, with 00 on very right and nopthing else - nada.

I have a 320 GB HDD I use for data apart from the regular HDD for the OS. Of course when you go to format it, it's actually 298GB. So I made a 248 GB partition, ext4 for ubuntu data, and a 50GB partition for Windows.
It shows as 248.01 GiB in size in GParted, with 217.27 GiB used. 30.75GiB unused.
When I go to Computer, right click on the partition, click Properties, it says Total capacity 244.1 GB, 18.3 GB free, 225.8 GB Used.
So:
1) Why does GParted show it as 248GB and the Properties as 244 GB?
2) More importantly: Why does Gparted show I've used 217.27 GBs, while the Properties show I've used 225.8 GB? What's going on there?
I have some confusion about one of my partition and the space it is taking. df -h output is given below;
# df -h

above information is showing that /var/lib/mysql partition total size is 379 GB and it is 68% used. However when I execute command du -sh /var/lib/mysql it shows following output.
# du -sh /var/lib/mysql
45G /var/lib/mysql
Now I want to know what files are taking space to make the partition 68% used. I want to list down all files in that partition with size.
I had this come up in logwatch: /dev/sda5 4.8G 3.6G 960M 80%/
Any ideas how I can find which files are suddenly taking up the space?
My company recently started bouncing all .Gifs back to our linux server. Is there a way on my end that i can block this from happening so it stops taking up space?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy /var/ partition continues to fill up on all my servers, and it is because the logs in /var/log/apache2 or /var/log/mysql are being deleted during log rotate, but their file handles are being held open. Thus, a "du -sh /var/log" shows the correct values, but "df | grep /var" shows something much different.
It seems that the log files rotate, however if I run "lsof | grep deleted" it returns lots of files that are no longer visible in the directory, however refuse to clear themselves off the disk.
The only way I have found to make these log files go away (and thus clear up the disk space on the partition I should have) is to restart either apache or mysql, depending on which process has huge sized log files being held open.
Is it just me, or is this a big flaw in the way linux works, that it can't figure out how to release file handle for a log so the disk space can be reclaimed? This is happening to me a lot lately.
Here is some output from one of my web servers so you can see what I am seeing...
root@web49:~# df -h | grep /var$

I used photorec to recover lost files and it brought up 70gb worth of files, when I was done looking through them I deleted these files. but these files still seem to be taking up my disk space. When I try to access my trash bin with root I get a message that reads...."The folder contents could not be displayed. sorry, could not display all the contents of "trash": operation not supported." if I open my trash bin when I'm not in root, the bin is empty.
How do I free up my disk space?
When I reinstalled ubuntu I chose to encrypt my home folder (something that i've never done before) but now that I know it doesn't really make a difference i'd like to decrypt it because the .encryptfs folder is taking up so much space i'm getting notifications every time I log in.

I don't know what the exact problem is, but we are having problems with the disk space being maxed out at 100 gigs. What we think the problem is...is that postfix is either caching or logging all the emails we send out. We sent 250k emails (500kb apiece) over the weekend and we were having trouble with that quantity. It seems some of those email were queued up for retry sending...but we didn't have sufficient disk space for that? Something broke - I'm not sure what.
What I want to do is to find and change the config file that has to do with postfix email retrying - possibly limit this (not sure if this will fix my problem). Or, turn off /limit any way that postfix logs/caches emails so that it won't take up all the disk space when queued up for retry... Again, I'm totally lost here (on both what's going on, and how to fix it). I'm not sure what more information is needed to address this problem
Whilst in fedora i deleted files off my second hard drive to free up some space, i deleted over 10gb worth of data. When booting back in to my windows partition it doesnt recognize the free space instead it thinks the hard drive is still full even though i deleted the data.Not to sure as to why this has happened, as im sure i have deleted stuff of this hard drive before from my linux partition.Any help would be greatly appreciated as my 70gb hard drive is full with only 20gb of data to show for it

View 1 Replies View RelatedI switched to Fedora from Ubuntu about a month ago, and I've been very happy so far. But today I started the upgrade to Fedora 15, and something isn't right. I used the preupgrade method, and the package download took a respectable 30-40 minutes, then I was prompted to reboot my machine. I did so, about 4 hours ago. It took about 2 hours to get to the point where it says it's installing the packages, and 2 hours to get to where it is as I write this, at 116 completed packages out of 1634.
I'm pretty sure this isn't normal for ANY distribution. The machine itself is about 6 months old, so I'm pretty sure it's not a hardware issue. I'm considering interrupting the upgrade and doing a clean install, but I was wondering, is there anything I can do before resorting to the clean install option?
I'm using an acer aspire one netbook and attempting to install ubuntu 11.04 on it using flash drive. I extracted the installer using the universal usb installer. Anyway as soon as I get to the ubuntu installer screen it won't let the installer begin and says this: "could not find kernel img:/casper/vmlinuz. I have tried many things including typing in this:"vmlinuz initrd.img" and extracting the data to the flash drive again but nothing has worked.

View 10 Replies View Relatedafter yesterday's update to kernel 2.6.35.10-72 my grub.conf didn't get updated and ll /boot shows that neither vmlinuz or initramfs exist for that kernel. uname -r though tells me I'm running 2.6.35.10-72.
How can I do that? and on another more reallystic matter how can I generate the missing files so I can manually update grub.conf?
While booting Linux it takes ages for 'enabling swap space'
I have allocated swap space twice that of the RAM.
Is there a way to fix it? What should I do to avoid this in the future installs?

I know this has been covered a lot but it seems as though there should be a definitive answer and I have yet to find one.How much free space in /boot is required to make preupgrade work? I have 173M, which according to the figures I've seen should be enough, but the preupdate client still complains. Any workarounds? I have already tunefs'ed and deleted old kernels.

Looks to me like the installation media for i386 doesn't have an i386 kernel! I'm trying to install to an i586 CPU.
I was going about tweaking it and preparing it to my needs, While installing through yum I dont have much other than the fact that I have to search for the packages. But when I open "Add/remove software" of Fedora. I am greeted with " No space left on the disk" and when I seek for more details it says " Disk Error :[errno 5] Input/output error"I did some research and I saw that it usually occurs during installation, but here I have successfully installed it.Can someone help me with it? Later on I even had notification of the same warning. And mind you I got loads of free space.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just installed Fedora 8 off a magazine dvd I had but it won't boot...What I have done is I got Easeus' Partition Manager 3.0 Home Edition and created a 25 GB partition, then i rebooted the system with the Fedora 8 disk in to install it whic it did, no errors, (but I did say not to install the boot loader because i have Windows 2000 installed aswell) then after it has installed it boots straight to windows. It doesn't ask me to boot to Fedora, it goes straight to windows.I am totally stumped as why I can' boot to Fedora.

After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup,when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because,again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then,instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing,once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup,then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process,once i finished i continued to the next part,the installation,but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data,after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot,appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line,since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
