I am confiuring DNS on CentOS 5.4 but unable to resolve.The configuration files and output of commands is given below.IP Address=192.168.0.66

cant resolve anything via dns, can ping ips though, traceroute shows that traffic is going through.

I am not able to find /etc/resolve.conf on my centos machine.it says no such file or dir .with out this file i am not able to connect to internet.when i ping my localhost and my machines ip address i am getting a reply.but when i ping some domain(eg - google.com) i get no reply.i tried manually entering the dns nameserver from system->adminstration->network->dns tab.i dono what ip to enter there..

We installed CentOS 5 at our school and are attempting to get 2 simple DNS servers online. These are simple name resolution servers for our network. We installed the needed caching nameserver packages via Yum and all seems to be well, but for some reason when the server is online, it fails to resolve DNS records except when we direct the requests to its 127.0.0.1 (localhost) interface. As for the server specs, the DNS server is running on a Virtual Machine, and the ESXi server has 2 quad-core Xeon CPU's with 48 Gigs of RAM (in short.. hardware is adequate.)

When the box boots up, we can confirm that the named service is running and it resolves DNS records when we direct queries to its localhost address:

What would cause the Named service to not answer DNS queries from the physical IP but only from it's internal IP?
I'm having really weird and frustrating DNS issues with my clients unable to properly resolve the server's ip address. They can resolve each other's, and outside systems, but not the server - at least, not correctly, and not all the time.
I have one Ubuntu server set up that does both DHCP and DNS serving to the Windows systems. The server has DNS forwarding turned on to forward to OpenDNS's servers (I've tried using my ISP's dns servers but the problem remains).
The server is *not* set up as a firewall; I am actually using a DLink router for that, and the Dlink is *not* set up to serve up DHCP nor DNS.
What I am getting is that my clients - and there are nothing but Windows clients - will not resolve the name of the server. For example, if I do: ping linuxserver
I get back a false IP address of 192.168.0.64 (and I've seen once a 192.168.2.49).
If, however, I put a dot in there: ping linuxserver.
I get back the *correct* IP address of 192.168.0.2, and thereafter, ping'ng linuxserver without the dot will work. Until the dns cache expires, either naturally or with ipconfig /flushdns on the windows clients.
The client *are* getting valid dhcp leases and can resolve everything happy-happy, they just will not get the proper address of the server 100% of the time.
I have setup a home based web server to host a photo blog for myself and my friends. I will be running wordpress and possibly a phpbb3 forum. I'd like to open this to discuss server administration, server setup, and server maintenance. However, I have a pretty good start on all of those but serving a domain name to my static ip. Here my static ip is 24.10.202.144. I registered a domain through [URL]... It appears that I have the domain working to forward to my ip. However, I am still getting this output file from apache.

I have tested the domain name across a few different computers on different ips. It works appropriately. I just want to make sure I have it set correctly on the (apache) server side of things. Then I can get more into Zone Editing etc.

Peter Anvin' and nothing else. The installation splash screen never appears. As a test, I downloaded the first of 7 iso files for the 32-bit version of Centos 5.5 and pointed the CD/DVD drive to that iso. In that case, the installation starts as expected. I would really like to get the 64-bit version installed and running.

I have a client that is across the internet that is having trouble getting files from my tftp server. A tcpdump reveals that the client is requesting the same file over and over again. In /var/log/messages, I am see the following error repeated over and over until the client finally gives up.

I followed the Wiki guide for configuring my Postfix server for SASL / TLS. I don't get any errors and I assume it's working but when I try and test SASL (saslauthd), I don't get the response noted according to the Wiki and I don't understand why.

I am looking into setting up replication in a production environment but currently this is on two test machines. I am following the documentation at [URL] but I am unable to get past "16.1.1.10 Setting the Master Configuration on the Slave". When I do the CHANGE MASTER TO I am getting a syntax error for some reason. What am I doing wrong? These servers run "CentOS release 5.5 (Final)" and "MySQL 5.0.77-log Source distribution" installed via yum. The only changes from default are that I created a single database on the master before doing the table lock and dump, then everything else has been done exactly to what the documentation states, but is still failing.
The option skip-networking is not in the config file on either server and neither one runs SELinux or any firewall.

I've installed centos 5 on an old computer with success and it works great.I can access the web server hosted on the centos server from any computer on the wireless and wired local network. I can also use ssh (putty) and nx client from any computer on the local network (wired and wireless) to access the centos server.On the wireless router I've configured a port forwarding to the wireless network interface on the centos server. I can access the centos server from the outside (internet) through this port forwarding both through http and ssh or nx client.MY problem is that I can't access the centos server from the internet through the wired network interface. Any attempt to view a web page or login with ssh or the nx client will timeout.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWe have a server were we no longer seem to be able to gain access, neither locally or remotely.When we try to connect via SSH we get a "Connection Refused". We have checked that it's not our standard firewall blocking the request, so it can either be the local firewall (which we disabled when installing) or that the process isn't running.However, when we try to login locally on the machine (as root) all we get is "Login failed". We've tried restarting the machine in single user mode to change the root password, and while we can do this succesfully, it still doesn't give us access when rebooting the machine afterwards.No other users (besides the standard users created when installing) are available on the server, so we can't say if this is a problem with the root account, or with logging on in general.

I'm able to connect to my company's VPN network using GNOME NetworkManager but when I try to login to the remote system using SSH it is not able to resolve the DNS name, It works fine if I use IP instead of the FQDN.
