Server :: Cannot Connect Via Ssh From Outside The Network
Dec 7, 2010
I cannot connect to my server via ssh from outside my office network. Ssh from inside the network poses no problem. From outside the network, I can ping the server so I assume that there is no problem with the IP address. I am quite new to linux networking so pls forgive me if this is a stupid question. Is there any changes I need to make in the sshd_config file?

I'm having a real problem with intermittent ssh disconnections? It's the same thing regardless if it's over ethernet or wireless, and nfs shares don't have any problems at all.

I have an openSUSE 11.2 and I was trying to connect to a FTP server from Dolphin application but it didn't work. (I used ftp://<IP ADDRESS> in the address field)
From CLI or using FileZilla I can connect to that server.
What could be the cause of this strange behavior?

Upgraded two machines to 11.3 in the past 2 weeks. NFS is broken on both, in different ways. The problem I'll mention here is that the nfs server is running, but clients can't connect.
The server is running:
tinderbox:~ # /etc/init.d/nfsserver status
Checking for kernel based NFS server: idmapd running
mounted running
statd running
nfsd running
It has a valid export list:
tinderbox:~ # showmount -e
Export list for tinderbox:
/usr/local/share/common 192.168.1.0/24
The export exists:
tinderbox:~ # ls -lR /usr/local/share/
/usr/local/share/:
total 4
drwxrwxrwx 2 root root 4096 Jan 2 12:10 common
/usr/local/share/common:
total 0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 Jan 2 12:10 test.txt
But attempts to mount the export are unsuccessful, both from the local machine:
tinderbox:~ # mount.nfs 192.169.1.200:/usr/local/share/common /mnt -v
mount.nfs: timeout set for Sun Jan 2 12:14:19 2011
mount.nfs: trying text-based options 'addr=192.169.1.200,vers=4,clientaddr=192.168.1.200'
mount.nfs: mount(2): Connection timed out
mount.nfs: Connection timed out
...and from an OpenSUSE 11.0 machine.
moira:~ # mount.nfs 192.169.1.200:/usr/local/share/common /mnt/tmp/ -v
mount.nfs: timeout set for Sun Jan 2 11:52:17 2011
mount.nfs: text-based options: 'addr=192.169.1.200'
mount.nfs: Unable to connect to 192.169.1.200:111, errno 110 (Connection timed out)
mount.nfs: mount to NFS server 'rpcbind' failed: timed out, giving up
I've had NFS running on my local network for over a decade, and never had problems like this before.

until 2 weeks ago I had o.S11.3 on both my Siemens and Asus laptops. I have installed NX No Machine. ( I know it's not open source,I am using the free version). With commandline ( root) /usr/NX/bin/nxclient I was able to connect to the other machines. I got Qt: Locales not supported on X server, the NX menu popped up and I was able to connect by inserting resp codes. After fresh install of o.S.11.4 on the ASUS the commandline (root) answers:
xlib: connection to":0.0" refused by server
xlib: No protocol specified
nxclient: cannot connect to X server:0.0
The ASUS can still be reached from the other machines (one with o.S.11.3,the third one with o.S.11.2 ) SSH ( Lan)connections are all working forth and back between the machines, even to and from Win XP, however only from Win 7 on the ASUS, but that's a Win7problem. Comparing the installed xorg-x11- server-extra : on o.S. 11.3 Additional X servers ( Xmdx,Xephir,Xnest,Xvfb ) ,on o.S.11.4 the Xvfb is missing, might that be the reason?

Does anyone know, or have any experience with, what the best way to set a network interface on a linux server to be up - so that virtual machines can bridge through the physical interface, but not allow anyone on a network to connect to the server itself? Thank you

mount -t nfs 10.0.0.1:/home/usr/file /home/usr/tmp I get the following error : mount.nfs: No route to host
And when I try to rpcinfo -p 10.0.0.1 I get the error :

I have a Ubuntu server (10.10) setup with apache and is being port NAT'ted via firewall from outside to the webserver.I am able to access the webserver from inside LAN but not from outside. NATs are working fine because I can see the traffic come through on tcpdump but the webserver will not respond to the request from outside ip address. Here are the tcpdumps.

So a while back I was able to mount a directory from my OpenSuse server as a NFS on an Esxi server. After restarting the Esxi server, the NFS became inactive and I was unable to remount it. The error given was that the Esxi client was unable to connect to the Suse server. I was looking into the showmount -a command on the Suse server and it showed the mount point on the Esxi server. Could this be causing the Suse server to reject new attempts to mount the directory? What else can I try to fix this problem? Also I should note that both servers can ping each other.

I just recently bought a WinStar USB LPR Network Print Server so that I could connect my printer to my network so all the machines on my network could print, and everything would be OS independent. The problem I'm having is that I can't get CUPS to connect to the printer. It either never prints anything, saying that the printer is not connected, or saying that LPR is spooling the job, but it never completes. I've been configuring it as a network printer in CUPS, and trying all the different configuration options to no avail. The print server is located on http://192.168.1.103 and is pingable. The print server I have is this one:

What is the correct way to set up a print server like this so I can print to it?

I tried for two days to install ubuntu server to my computer from a cd. Whenever I tried burning to a CD-RW (using two programs at highest and lowest speeds), my cd always said it had corrupt files. So I setup a virtualbox harddisk that was setup tonuse my slave harddisk and installed ubuntu server in virtualbox successfully. Now when I boot my server, it won't connect to my network. Long story short, I have taken lo out of my interfaces and tried resetting my dhcp ip address by releasing and renewing it using dhclient. I have realized that eth0 doesn't exist (it shows up in windows). I think that all I need to do is add eth0 to ubuntu...

I have a server with 4 NICs in it. for HA and speed I have bonded 3 of them together (eth0-eth2) in my wonderful unmanaged 10/100 switch. 192.168.1.3. eth3 is cross connected via the patch panel to another system so that file transfers can be a 1000/FULL. I have created a 172.1.1.0 network between the 2 hosts. Problem is that once i connect the cross over NIC thes rest of the network cant see the server. I am sure it is a routing problem and added ip route add 172.1.1.0/24 dev eth3 172.1.1.0/24 dev eth3 proto kernel scope link src 172.1.1.0 192.168.1.2/24 dev bond0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.2 169.254.0.0/16 dev eth3 scope link metric 1005 169.254.0.0/16 dev bond0 scope link metric 1006 default via 192.168.1.2 dev bond0

i'm experiencing some weird behaviour: I have a server running ubuntu 10.04 and two Apple laptops in my home network. Sometimes after booting up the server doesn't connect to the wireless network, but instead "kills" the connection of the laptops. (The network then isn't available for about two minutes - it's showing but it can't connect) On the server the network interface is up, but not associated.
Sometimes the interface isn't configured properly (iwconfig isn't showing an entry) - but in this case the behaviour obviously isn't showing. some information about my system:
Ubuntu Version: Server 10.04x64
Wireless Card: Netgear WG311v3 with marvell chipset
Driver: ndiswrapper+mrv8335x64

I have one pc on which I have installed slackware and samba (fixed IP, mask 255.255.255.0) I have another PC (also XP) which also has fixed IP running XP, and I can connect that to the slackware server easily My third PC connects to the internet and gets its IP address from the Cisco router(?) that provides the IP and mask on boot up.
I tried changing the IP and Mask on the slackware server to match the internet PC (which uses a mask 255.255.254.0) but the PC mask and IP changed on the internet PC I want the PC that connects to the internet to also be able to connect to the slackware server, but I see no need for the slackware server to also connect to the internet - I will mainly use it as a file server When I worked for another company I think the IT department talked about having 2 network cards in the PC that connects to the internet

I have x11 forwarding enabled in /etc/ssh/sshd_config on a suse 11.2 32 bit box running kde I can open x apps on a windows machine using xming and putty just fine, but when I boot the same machine into suse 11.2 64 bit using kde and try using konsole I get: cannot connect to x server
The command I'm using to log in is: ssh -X -l username host I doubt the problem is with the server I'm logging into or it wouldn't work in windows, not really sure what to look for as I've never had a problem using x11 forwarding from a linux client before only windows ones

I have Ubuntu 10.04 x86 installed, trying to get teamspeak 3 beta30.I have followed this guide: http://robert.penz.name/296/howto-in...u-10-04-lucid/
And can not get my network setup correctly to allow people to connect externally from my LAN. I have forwarded every relevant port I could find to the computer hosting TS, I forwarded them first as their respective protocols, and then as the combined UDP/TCP. I tried Forwarding single port numbers, and then port ranges.I have also tried uninstalling selinux.I have tried connecting directly to my cable modem with the server.I had this working perfectly three months ago with all the same software, using the same guide I listed above. The only thing I can imagine has changed is my operating system itself with system updates.
My network looks like:
Comcast cable modem--->Netgear WNR3500L Router----->Ubuntu 10.04 x86 desktop edition
what else I could possibly check? I can connect to and manage the TS server fine using localhost:9987 or 192.168.1.x:9987, it just wont allow any connections from outside the network.

I am using Squeeze and all appears OK at first... I have a DHCP lease, PING to router works, apache servering fine in and outside the network, Epiphany seems to connects to default debian.org only, BUT I cannot connect to any other websites and apt will not connect to any servers. I installed once, tried to fix problem, gave up and reinstalled and still have the same problem.
I unistalled Network Manager thinking that was the problem, but still the same issue. Is there a default firewall blocking certain connections or am I missing something I'm supposed to know about? I installed some non-free firmware in the beginning of install and all worked... and I connected fine when downloading packages during install.

On one machine I have OpenSuSE 11.4 and the other is Windows 7. From OpenSuSE I can connect to the Windows 7 machine running Tight VNC using KDRC and no problems. But I get a message of 'Failed to connect to server (192.168.1.1)' when I go from the Windows machine to the OpenSuSE machine. ON the OpenSuSE machine, the firewall has VNC and VNC Sercver allowed in the firewall. In the Remote Administration, 'Allow Remote Administration' is checked and Open port in firewall is also checked. Why can I not connect? Also, how do I set what the password is on the OpenSuSE machine?

After installing 11.4, I need to type in the command to update the firmware for a broadcom wifi adapter. Then I needed to reboot, twice, before the system knew to use the adapter (where the adapter wifi light goes from orange to blue).
Then I needed to add my wireless network and type in my key. But the key does not take. If I click on my wireless network icon, it just re-asks for the key and does not connect nor give any other message. Network icon continues to display no connection.
So I need to reboot again.
When the system starts again, the adapter is blue, I click on the icon for my wifi network and it connects without asking for my key and I can then set to start my wifi by default.
Now my wifi works fine.

I recently fixed an annoying problem and I thought it would be nice to share my solution here. The problem was that after a cycle of suspend/resume, Network Manager would only auto-connect to the same network as it was previously connected to. So, for example, if I suspended my laptop at home, and then I went to school and resumed it, it would try to connect to the home network, and then just give up. It would not connect to the school network unless I explicitly told it to.irst, I'll describe the fix. If you're having this problem, you can this. Copy the following:
Code:
#!/bin/sh
case "$1" in
[code]....
