Oct 30, 2010I run my own home server using OpenSuse 11.1, everything is setup using apache, php, etc etc, and it all works perfect, but now I need to use my own email server for the use of Dolphin social networking software, so that when someone registers, the email server sends out registration confirmation emails, so I set up postfix, yeah right!!!, even though I followed all instructions to set postfix as a closed relay, a test done at mxtoolbox site still said it was an open relay, but while I was trying to set up postfix, my access to the server slowed down, and my servers drive light was constantly active,,, so when I look at the mail queue, I saw 4000+ emails, all from japan, (hinen.net), so I promptly shut down postfix and use postsuper -d ALL in the command console to delete the queue, but no matter how I try, I couldn't configure postfix as a closed relay,,, so I uninstalled it and installed sendmail, and using webmin, I could use a spam list and block the domain, now, sendmail's test at mxtools show as a closed relay, I can't even send out a test email using smtp auth, but disabling auth, I can, but now my IP is blocked at spam cop, and spamhaus,,, gmail server say my IP is not authorized to send to their servers, but to use my ISP relay instead,,, but my ISP doesn't have a relay,,hence the need to run my own email server.
My home server uses double layer firewall, a hardware firewall between the internet and the server, and a software firewall on the server, and I only allow the ports I need, IE, 80 = http, 443 = https, 20/21 = ftp, 25 = smtp, 110 = pop3. and that's all, but any other internal access from my workstation to the server, using ssh, I only open the ports on the server firewall. If someone here has a great deal of knowledge on sendmail, and can set up a an M4 (linux.mc) config file for me, it would be much appreciated. What I would like my email server to do, is to only allow the sending of emails from inside it's own server system,, ie, when a php script sends an email to the server, then the email server would let it through, but anything else, outside the local network is ignored.

If any ip exceeds that limit, it should automatically be blocked. I also want to run this script on regular intervals in 24 hours for atleast 2 times.

Nov 10, 2009in my network, users has total access to their PCs, so theres a problem to filter (URL, ports,etc.) their virtual machines installed (they can assign self any IP, e.g.)
Id thought about use the MAC prefix in VMware VMs (00:0c:29:*), but i can only found a way through DHCP, and this isn't a good solution (they can assign a static IP to workaround...)
It will be better using firewall (iptables), but I don't found the way to add rules based in MACs with wildcards.

May 22, 2011i was tasked to setup a proxy server to block access to some websites. i'm using centOS 5 and Squid 7:2.6 STABLE21-6.e15...i appended the following and tested the configuration with the supposed server i am using and the it does seem to work but now i'm wondering how i can test it with a client computer..i have 2 LAN cards and i just connected the other to one PC (can a direct connection work or does it need to pass thru a switch or hub)...i just can't figure out how it should be... how do i configure the 2nd LAN card to use this computer as its proxy server?

Nov 29, 2010Using Ubuntu 10.10 I have a VPN account with VPNtunnel.se. I configured everything as described on their site. It uses OpenVPN It connects no problem. However; after it connects instead of having a nice secure connection I have no connection at all! I can't access any site, email, bittorrent all come to a screeching hault. The service works fine in Windows. I'm useless with linux networking.

May 31, 2011I have a weird issue where all of the machines in my office can all connect to our web server, either via DNS or using the server IP directly. However, on my machine, which is using the same network IP as the rest of the office and I know it's not being blacklisted, I can't access the server at all via SSH or web or mail. I'm the only machine running Linux, I've flushed the network cache using nscd, but this made no difference. Can anyone think of what might be going on here?

Nov 19, 2010I have set up a 5.5 installation on a Virtual box VM. The Virtualbox (not for the VM) network preferences have DHCP Server disabled and IPV address and the network mask I believe are valid for my home network. My VM is up and running and it has gotten an IP address from my home router and everything seems fine. From any machine in my house I can ssh into my centos installation. I went ahead and started up the httpd service and the website is up. IOW, I can see it from my centos box - when I navigate to http://localhost However, I cannot see it from any other machine on the net. The IP address of the centos bos is 192.168.0.141. From the centos I can do a ttp://192.168.0.141 and see the Apache 2 test Page. I can see that from anywhere else. Although I can ssh to that machine.

Effectively, I want to restore a Windows disk image onto the Linux system hard disk.I don't have physical access to the machine, so I need to find a way to do everything remotely, using SSH (no KVM). And the Linux machine only has one hard disk - the one containing the OS. However, I might be able to create a partition in free space at the end of the hard disk to store the image (I might need some help with the Linux commands). Or perhaps the image file can be pulled via FTP.
I tried Acronis but was disappointed to find that it doesn't seem to allow me to overwrite the system partition (unlike the Windows version of Acronis, which is capable of doing this with a restart).

Mar 21, 2010A couple of weeks ago, I completed a system upgrade that was motivated because I have to deploy Windows 7. I have to deploy it because my Windows development environment is getting very long in the tooth, and I have to become current again for a project of mine that is underway. So, yesterday, I deployed Windows 7 Professional in VMware 7 hosted on Mandriva 2010. With my new upgrade, I have a very capable quad-core athlon system with an NVidia 240GT video card, and it runs Aero quite nicely in the virtual machine. I do have to say that Windows 7 looks nice and isn't too annoying to use, except - of course - when I need to dig into it to change some setting or another.
Now, on Windows, for many years I have used Zone Alarm firewall rather than the Windows firewall, because ZA monitors and controls outgoing connections. I have used this on both my Win2K development system (virtual machine) AND my Win XP laptop to keep microsoft applications (notably media player) from calling the mother ship when I didn't think they should. It has worked well. So one of my first actions was to download the newest copy of ZA free firewall and deploy it on Windows 7, after disabling the Windows firewall. Well guess what. ZA doesn't stop Windows from calling the mother ship. I have all settings on ZA set to "ask" before allowing anything to contact the net, but I've been playing with some multimedia things and the microsoft software has been talking on the internet as happy as you please, and ZA hasn't asked me a single time if it could do so.
Of course, when I ran a few tests with ping and tracert, ZA asked me. Also, I had to fiddle with ZA settings a bit to get the Windows 7 to successfully talk to my LAN. But when Windows 7 wants to talk to microsoft, it talks regardless of what ZA says. Well, when you get down to it, this is one reason I have Windows running in a VM...I WILL be in control, regardless of what microsoft wants. Does anyone know of a tool that I could use from Mandriva to prevent a VMware client from talking to a website? I'd like to be able to easily enable/disable it so that I can let Win 7 talk to microsoft when I need for it to do so, but no other time. I'm using bridged networking in VMware so all my virtual machines have their own IP addresses, but of course all of them (as well as my host Linux system) go through the same network adapter. It seems to me that iptables would have to work for this, but I'm not at all sure how to set it up to do it given the bridge.
General :: Set A Password For Transmission-daemon, The BitTorrent Client Server?
Feb 26, 2010The config file is ambiguous, and keeps getting overwritten when you restart the daemon in Debian, anyway.
In /etc/transmission-daemon/settings.json, there are these options:
rpc-username
rpc-password
proxy-auth-username
proxy-auth-password
Every time I restart the daemon with:
/etc/init.d/transmission-daemon restart
It overwrites rpc-password, and the password it prints doesn't work anyway.
Does anyone know how to set the password properly? I don't want to disable it.

Nov 23, 2010I have just set up the transmission bittorrent client on my server (using the web interface), and am trying to get the port forwarding right. After noticing low download speeds (and rare uploading), I decided to check if a port needed to be forwarded.
I found many conflicting sites, mentioning both the ranges 6881-6999 and the port 51413 (as well as TCP and UDP versus just TCP). My current configuration is to forward TCP and UDP port 51413 to my server.

A Windows using friend of mine is able to access Hulu with a program called Hotspot Shield.
Is there a similar program that anyone knows about for Linux?
