I see tons of these in my dmesg, and it's causing my virtualbox vms to crash with disk IO errors. It's only affecting the Linux guests. What would cause this?

I sometimes get my webserver blocked by my mysql server because of "to many connection errors" and have to use flush hosts to solve it, i now wonder if there is any way to increese that connection error value so the webserver wont get blocked ?

View 4 Replies View RelatedRecently my Ubuntu system decided to crash. Sometimes the mouse freezes, sometimes I just can't open anything, and other times I can access the terminal but can't write. I can open files as read only both in my /home partition and in /var/log, but I can't write at all. Sometimes I get Bash: input/output error. I *can* "ls /proc", if that makes any difference.
I find that if I reboot, the problem goes away for a few minutes and then reoccurs. I can read/write to my other (windows) drive, although when I did a chkdsk in win7, I get a "An index entry from index $0 of file 25 is incorrect" message. Is the disk failing? Just a few bad sectors? Maybe the filesystem is corrupt? Why can I read but not write?
on a fresh install of slackware -current x64, the first thing that i did was download and install opera. now, whenever i start kde, and run opera, X crashes with lots of crazy errors, usually in the format of:
/usr/bin/akonadi*whatever* cannot connect to x server :0
/usr/bin/akonadi*whatever* has crashed too many times and will not be restarted.
and then i get spat back out at the CLI. opera works fine in the other Desktop Environments, and i'm posting from xfce right now, so i know its an issue with akonadi. i would like to use KDE as my default desktop, but i dont want to use it without all of its features
I've recently turned an older PC into a linux box for the purpose of creating an online server with ftp and ssh capability and file sharing. I've installed Kubuntu 9.10 and I'm trying to ssh to the computer from outside the network.I've install the openssh-client and openssh-server and I've created a static ip address, which works fine. I cannot ssh to the machine from outside the isp using either the direct ip address or hostname. The machine is connected to the internet via a Linksys Wireless G router, and I've edited the configuration settings to keep port 22 open for connect in the port server utility.
I've checked the ssh_config and sshd_config settings and port 22 is the default connection port, which is supposed to be open. I've run ifconfig and everything looks fine. I can connect to the computer using a machine connected to the same router, but other computers cannot access it. I want it to be visible to everyone.

After upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 all of a sudden, the task manager or task bar, keeps changing length. The individual window "buttons" themselves keep changing size - flashing even, and the space between them also changes. It is driving me nuts! The little system tray(?) icons no longer appear in the system tray, but all stacked on top of each other in the top left corner.

now mind you, my linux server is running from port forwarding from my router, which is connected to the main computer, and i have ssh and squid running as well. not sure if those two have any affect on the service. i think this is a problem with the firewall, because i have read somewhere that multiple ports need to be open for a passive ftp to work.
I use sendmail as the MTA for our company. Lately employees have started working from home. These home users send their email through our company MTA using SASL-AUTH. This works fine for the most part but lately we've seen problems with this. The SORBS blacklist looks not only at the IP address of our company's MTA but also at the IP address of our employees home computers. (After all, the home computer IP address is revealed in the mail header.)
SORBS has been rejecting emails sent from our home users because their dynamic IP address is present in the email headers. This is true despite their email passing through our company MTA which is on a properly forward and reverse mapped static IP. The company MTA is not listed in SORBS but the mere presence of a dynamic IP somewhere in the mail header is causing outright rejection. This seems bizarre to me considering home workers sending through a company relay is a common and reasonable business practice.
Can sendmail offer a solution here? For example, to change headers to obscure the IP address of the MUA or make the email appear to have originated directly on the MTA? I don't want to mess with internet RFC but frankly I'm out of ideas for how to get the mail delivered.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a fresh installation of CentOS 5 I'm using for a server, and I'm having issues with port configuration. I have iptables running, and it started with no /etc/sysconfig/iptables file. I added a few basic rules (port 53, port 10000 for webmin), saved the file, and restarted the service. I tried connecting to webmin, scanned ports, and traffic was blocked. I set iptables to allow all traffic and restarted the service, and it still showed basically every port as being blocked. It seems port 80 and port 22 work for some reason, even when I tell iptables to block all ports.
I'm not sure what's going on here. Iptables is reading the /etc/sysconfig/iptables file, and if I use lynx localhost:someport it responds as it should according to the file. However, if I try connecting by IP, it's like there's some other firewall or something running that does whatever it's configured to do.....
If khungtaskd stopped a hung process is there any way to know what that task was? I.e. does khungtaskd leave any kind of log record?
Or any other way to find out if a task hung.
I want some users should be barred from login into some of NIS clients. Please help me to accomplish this. I googled it but still not very clear to me. Can you please tell me how it works. The OS is RHEL 5.

You know, the usual, /var/log/messages, lastlog, etc. What I've been using is just a simplistic grep statement that looks for keywords in certain log files, such as warn, crit, etc., with the -i flag to ensure no case searches. I thought, well, surely there are others out there doing the same thing, but more automated. Perhaps something that can check files for keywords and then notify, via email, if anything out of the ordinary is seen.

Is there an application or plugin which periodically displays the contents of the tasklist or even better, it briefly displays the most urgent/important tasks when I login? Or anything else which automatically displays the most important tasks. Currently I have to open the task list and look at them (which I usually forget). I do not mean some kind of alarm when the task is due but more a daily reminder of what to do.

I have created a script which runs some commands on remote servers.
I am stucked when a server is not responding timely.
I want to set a timeout say after 10 seconds, if I am unable to login (for whatever reason) I should be dropped back at the shell.
I tried using LoginGraceTime but it is not working for me as below:

View 2 Replies View RelatedWe're currently running a web site on CentOS 5.5 running Apache - Tomcat - Mysql. A part of the web site runs slowly or it would appear to be.
The part in question returns records from mysql about approx 200 - 400 rows of data.
The first point of call was the SQL database we've managed to fine tune this. The problem I have is with IE7 and IE8 when I run Firefox or IE6 SP2 the rows return in about 9 seconds. I use IE7 or IE8 and it takes about 20 - 25 seconds.
Could this be an APACHE problem?
I have Centos 5 Installation with following Linux ipmpls.mobilink.net.pk 2.6.18-8.el5xen #1 SMP Fri Jan 26 14:42:21 EST 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux. I have Nagios running on it for monitoring switches. It also runs postfix to give email alerts in case of a switch is unreachable. The problem is that the server hangs for a minute and returns to normal operation. During this period if a switch is polled it cannot be reached and hence Nagios shows the Flapping state on the switches. I need to understand as to why the server hangs
