Server :: Sound Device Still Blocked?
Feb 2, 2010
I have the impression that the sound device is still occupied. Probably I do not properly kill the recording process and I guess that invoking the script 'record.sh' via fcrontab contributes to the problem as well.Is there someone who has an idea what could lead to that 'silence'?

openSuse v11.1linux 2.6.27.39-0.2-default x86_64realtek acl1200 codecSound for various devices is at best erratic. It is hit or miss whether sound emits at any given time.Sometimes Flash player (in Firefox) has sound, sometimes not.Sometimes mplayer has sound, sometimes not. (A workaround for mplayer is to install the ALSA dev package and rebuild mplayer. It still fails on the default channel but succeeds on ALSA.)The message in mplayer is
Code:
[AO OSS] audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy
"fuser /dev/dsp" returns nothing.

For those that use Virtualbox on their slackware host and have a windows (xp) guest running. I have tried various settings for sound (Alsa, PulseAudio), the AC97 drivers are installed in the Windows xp guest os, but there is no sound and there is an unknown audio device (in the windows device manager). If I remove the AC97 drivers and use the soundblaster16 drivers in the Vbox settings there is no unknown sound device, but there's still no sound. why I can't get sound working?

I've recently turned an older PC into a linux box for the purpose of creating an online server with ftp and ssh capability and file sharing. I've installed Kubuntu 9.10 and I'm trying to ssh to the computer from outside the network.I've install the openssh-client and openssh-server and I've created a static ip address, which works fine. I cannot ssh to the machine from outside the isp using either the direct ip address or hostname. The machine is connected to the internet via a Linksys Wireless G router, and I've edited the configuration settings to keep port 22 open for connect in the port server utility.
I've checked the ssh_config and sshd_config settings and port 22 is the default connection port, which is supposed to be open. I've run ifconfig and everything looks fine. I can connect to the computer using a machine connected to the same router, but other computers cannot access it. I want it to be visible to everyone.

i have a server running vsftpd, and when i connect to it from the server itself using my externel ip address, everything checks ok, and i can browse files. but when i try to do the same on a windows computer on my network, this is what happens: [my externel ip is blocked out with x]
[Code]....
now mind you, my linux server is running from port forwarding from my router, which is connected to the main computer, and i have ssh and squid running as well. not sure if those two have any affect on the service. i think this is a problem with the firewall, because i have read somewhere that multiple ports need to be open for a passive ftp to work.

I use sendmail as the MTA for our company. Lately employees have started working from home. These home users send their email through our company MTA using SASL-AUTH. This works fine for the most part but lately we've seen problems with this. The SORBS blacklist looks not only at the IP address of our company's MTA but also at the IP address of our employees home computers. (After all, the home computer IP address is revealed in the mail header.)
SORBS has been rejecting emails sent from our home users because their dynamic IP address is present in the email headers. This is true despite their email passing through our company MTA which is on a properly forward and reverse mapped static IP. The company MTA is not listed in SORBS but the mere presence of a dynamic IP somewhere in the mail header is causing outright rejection. This seems bizarre to me considering home workers sending through a company relay is a common and reasonable business practice.
Can sendmail offer a solution here? For example, to change headers to obscure the IP address of the MUA or make the email appear to have originated directly on the MTA? I don't want to mess with internet RFC but frankly I'm out of ideas for how to get the mail delivered.

I have a fresh installation of CentOS 5 I'm using for a server, and I'm having issues with port configuration. I have iptables running, and it started with no /etc/sysconfig/iptables file. I added a few basic rules (port 53, port 10000 for webmin), saved the file, and restarted the service. I tried connecting to webmin, scanned ports, and traffic was blocked. I set iptables to allow all traffic and restarted the service, and it still showed basically every port as being blocked. It seems port 80 and port 22 work for some reason, even when I tell iptables to block all ports.
I'm not sure what's going on here. Iptables is reading the /etc/sysconfig/iptables file, and if I use lynx localhost:someport it responds as it should according to the file. However, if I try connecting by IP, it's like there's some other firewall or something running that does whatever it's configured to do.....

I've followed the steps outlined in the Fedora FAQ regarding sound issues. I am attempting to play some MP3 files using RhythmBox, and there's no sound. I have dug a bit deeper. I've tried alsamixer, and when I press F6 (Select Sound Card), I see three entries:
- (default)
0 HDA Intel
1 HDA NVidia
I have tried selecting a different sound card. When I select 1, I see this text: "This sound device does not have any controls". I have an NVidia GeForce 480 video card, but it has been suggested to me that I don't want to use it for sound. My speakers are in my monitor. I would assume that has ramifications on how I set things up for sound within Fedora. I have used some kind of sound test utility by executing this at the command prompt:
"speaker-test -c 2 -t wav".
I hear nothing. I don't know what to do next. If anyone can IM with me using Pidgin, that would be perfect

I'm trying to figure out what in the world is going on with my sound in OpenSuSE. I put in a brand new Audigy chipset soundcard and finally got some sound to come out of the speakers. I used the guide here: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE. to fix the permissions on my sound and am able to get sound-test to play sounds as well as connect to the sound device in my vmware and play sounds. That being said, I have terrible sound quality coming out. There is a lot of static sound like white noise and the volume of the actual sound played is very low compared to the noise. The sounds also distort somewhat.
I have tried the pulse audio change in the tutorial above also and have been searching around google. The only problem that I saw similar was a person who fixed the problem by updating KDE. I don't have KDE, I'm using Afterstep.

I've got a Fedora postfix server that I just upgraded from 9 to 10 using preupgrade. Starting yesterday, some messages were rejected by servers because the IP address had a poor "reputation". The odd thing is, the IP address they're registering isn't the IP address the server is sending from.
When I look at the full headers of our outgoing e-mail, the e-mail is listed as coming from ***.***.***.11, which is the correct address. But these services are somehow tying the e-mails back to ***.***.***.12, which is used for a different purpose entirely. Since this *.12 address doesn't match the MX record, I'm assuming that's why the mails are being blocked, but I'm not sure how the mails are being identified as coming from that address in the first place. It's odd that this just started when I upgraded.

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 and tomcat 6 java servlet container. I am trying to run the tomcat server on port 80, so I edited tomcat's configuration file (server.xml) and changed the default port from "8080" to "80". I launched tomcat server, went to my browser and entered:[url], but it says can not find server/location. Then I edit the server.xml and revert back to port "8080" and then enter: [url] and everything works fine. So my guess is some other service is taking up port 80, but I would think not, since I just installed Ubuntu and made sure apache isn't installed or running.
So I went to "System" --> "Administration", then choose "Network Tools". I then executed Netstat and did not see anything taking up port 80, but I do see port 8080 taken (assuming it is the tomcat server). Then I also did a Port Scan and entered my IP number. Again, I don't see port 80 taken, but do see 8080 being used.
I had a winxp laptop computer behind home wireless and was running tomcat 6 server fine with it, but it over-heated and died recently. So I got a used laptop and just installed Ubuntu 9.10. I have not changed my wireless router settings. It is the same as before. So I have ruled out my home's hardware/network equipment.
So here now I sit, wondering what is up?
For security reasons, is port 80 initially blocked by Ubuntu for some reason? Is there something I have to do beforehand to free up port 80?

VERY new to linux, erm but I have an issue that needs solving!I recently moved to university, where their network blocks sftp port 22, this means that I cannot connect to my FTP server which is running a version of linux. Now I've got this ftp server connected to a seedbox and it was created using the following walk through..Code:I have written this guide for a friend, but I though it would be useful for others as well.
There are several guides floating around, but I found that most always cock up in some way. This one is tried and tested to work on Debian Etch (on an OVH rps, but should apply to most servers). If there is a new stable release of rtorrent/libtorrent then I will update this guide to show you how to update it (without reinstalling the whole server).
At the bottom there are also instructions to install ftp access & some network monitoring software.Basically, I would really like someone to be able to construct the commands on how to change the listen port for sftp connection on linux or add another port to the list that Linux would use so that I could put in through putty.

I'm afraid I don't know much about h/w and I'm not sure how to proceed at the moment... My Linux system is running Fedora 12, and it has been working fine since I bought it several months ago. But when it got rebooted the other day after a kernel upgrade, the sound system appears to have disappeared. I can play movies but there is no audio channel, and games have no sound.Checked in /dev and things like sndstat, pcmixer, audio don't exist.I don't know what sound card was originally installed or if the sound is built into my motherboard - I can probably find out if necessary but I have not yet taken the machine apart to look.Question - is there any easy way to probe the system and figure out what hardware is installed? Can I reload the sound drivers? Not sure what the correct procedure is in the current situation.

I am trying to record a video clip, using my webcam, but sound synchronisation is always poor. I have used Cheese, UCView and VLC. One possible cause is explained in the reply to this question, but I am not an expert. In desperation, I now want to try ffmpeg. The ffmpeg documentation gives the following example
Code:
ffmpeg -f oss -i /dev/dsp -f video4linux2 -i /dev/video0 /tmp/out.mpg
My system has no /dev/dsp, but does have /dev/snd with these files
Code:
$ ls /dev/snd

I want to use alsa, not oss, but need to know the alsa input device name (/dev/dsp is created by loading the oss modules). By running alsamixer, I have nutted out that /dev/snd/controlC0 refers to the HDA Intel sound card, ~controlC1 is my USB webcam and ~controlC29 is the microphone built in to my notebook, but these are control devices, not inputs.
[Code]...
However, that does not explain which device is the mic built in to the laptop: by my calculation, it should be pcmC0D1c, but there is no such device. In /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/ I have directories for sub0 and sub1, which I am guessing relate to the mic jack and inbuilt mic respectively. Do two physical mics share one logical device somehow? I am starting to really confuse myself, if you haven't guessed that already.
I think my question boils down to "How do I record a video clip on Fedora 14 using ffmpeg?", but I am specifically interested in knowing how to specify each of the alsa sound input devices for my system.

I have old app that by default is looking for /dev/dsp as an audio device. The source is configured as such and I want to change that so sound will work on current versions of Fedora.
What is the equivalent of /dev/dsp in F15 ?
I think /dev/dsp was the default generic sound device .. ?
