Server :: Setup An MTA To Pass Mail Onto An External ISP/mail Provider?

Jul 1, 2009

I have a Fedora 10 machine that I want to setup to send email. However I don't want it to be a full blown SMTP setup. What I am looking to achieve is when something sends email from the local machine (e.g. from cron) to an address I want it to use an MTA on the local machine which will then connect to, and authenticate with, my e-mail providers SMTP server this will then take care of actually sending the e-mail.I don't want, or need, to setup a full blown SMTP service (i.e. only the local machine should be able to use it) so sendmail seems a bit over the top for my needs. Nor do I want to mess about with MX records (am I right in thinking this will mean I have to manage all mail for my domain?).

Networking :: CentOS Mail Setup - Sendmail Via External SMTP Server

Jul 30, 2011

I am setting up a CentOS box as a NAT firewall that needs to also send mail. It needs to send this mail using an outside provider's SMTP. The provider requires SMTP over SSL. None of the machines inside the NAT will ever send mail except via the provider's SMTP nor will they ever receive mail except to local clients via the provider's IMAP servers.

So for the example the machine is TESTMACHINE. There is one internet facing ethernet port connected to a DSL modem via pppoe.

The SMTP it needs to send mail via is mail.host.net which requires SMTP over SSL (port 465) and username/password authentication.

The sendmail documentation is quite confusing on how to get this simple setup operating, so an example showing the appropriate changes to sendmail.mc and other require config files.

OpenSUSE :: Receiving Mail Through A "standard" Mail Server Setup?

Aug 25, 2010

Through yast2 I went to network services-->Mail server and took the standard option. My connection type is Permanent, filled in the outgoing server information and got to the incoming mail screen.

I told it to accept remote SMTP connections, open a port in the firewall and bypassed the downloading section since I just want to directly receive mail (I did however tell it I wanted a daemon to fetchmail). Told it to forward root's mail to me and a delivery mod of Directly. And finished.

The system sends mail out but I can't seem to receive any. What did I do wrong or what else do I need to do?

Debian :: Forward All Root Mail To External E-mail Account?

Jun 28, 2010

The question is pretty much the same as the subject. I have a bunch of debian servers - most of them running exim4 default installations configured as internet site using dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config. It can send mails fine from php scripts and some other applications, but I can't seem to find a way to forward all root mail to some external address. I have tried adding "root: someaddress@example.com" to /etc/aliases and run newaliases command, but it doesn't seem to work.

Software :: Mail.rc For External SMTP / Mail.rc Is Working Correctly?

Jul 1, 2010

I am running CentOS 5.5 and am trying to get Nagios to send out Emails.

After a bit of reading I have the following in my /etc/mail.rc file:

Code:
[root@linux ~]# cat /etc/mail.rc
set ask askcc append dot save crt
ignore Received Message-Id Resent-Message-Id Status Mail-From Return-Path Via
set smtp=172.29.1.76
You have new mail in /var/spool/mail/root
[root@linux ~]#

I have Nagios setup correctly and introduced an error to generate an Email but nothing has come through.I suppose I have two questions:

1. Is mail.rc setup correctly?
2. Can I test to see if mail.rc is working correctly?

OpenSUSE Network :: Moving Mail From One Provider To Another

Jun 3, 2010

Currently, his mail is coming in on 2 addresses. He'd like to take the mails from one source and add it to the other.

The idea is to fetch the mails from the least used address - on the provider's POP server - and forward it to the other address. He can use the SMTP server from the same provider to send off the forwarded mails.

This operation would be cron'ed to run every few minutes.

Server :: Unsure Of Exim Configuration - Accepts Mail From Users On Multiple Domains To Pass On To The Outside World

Dec 29, 2010

I'm in the process of starting a migration from an old postfix server to nice shiney new exim server however there are a few things i'm really not clear on and i'm hoping that some one here could point me in the correct direction. Okay the postfix server at the moment does the follwoing ( i'll try and keep this simple ):

* accepts incoming mail for users on multiple domains and puts the mail in the users mailbox ( external -> internal )

*accepts mail from users on multiple domains to pass on to the outside world ( internal -> external )

Obviously the POP and Imap functions are handled by other daemons.. I'd like to replicate this sort of setup on the new exim box, however the guides i can find only help with configuring the exim system for incoming mails ( external -> internal ) for multiple domains and i cant seem to find a guide that would indicate how to do both ( internal -> external and external -> internal ) on one box. I'm guessing i may have to do some sort of auth to get exim to accept and then handle the internal -> external side of things?

Ubuntu :: Can't Send From Own Mail Server With Mail Client (Thunderbird Or Evolution)?

Jun 1, 2011

I have set up postfix and dovecot as per the Ubuntu anual and appear to have a functioning mail server.Using the sendmail command I can send mail and I receive mail in ~/Maildir. Using Thunderbird I can read any mails received but I can't send any mail from Thunderbird. I have tried with both STARTTLS and SSL/TLS and whilst I get the prompt for a password I keep getting the message my password for my server is wrong.I have ports 25, 465, 587 and 993. Is that all the right ports? When I ping my domain name it resolves to my router name whereas I believe it should resolve to my IP. Could there be a problem with my host file? I've had a play but to no avail. Here's the error in mail.log.

Ubuntu Servers :: Secondary Mail Server And A Mail Gateway/relay?

Aug 3, 2011

Our primary mail server is Exchange 2003 Standard on Windows Server 2003 Standard - don't shout at me; I inherited it already set up this way.I have a couple of hardware identical redundant servers (HP ML350 boxes), all with very fast 2 or 4 disk arrays, multiple core CPUs and plenty of memory, and I am looking at two potential new additions to the infrastructure.

A secondary mail server is high on my list of priories. I've been well and truly bitten by Exchange in the past and given that this particular box has been running four years straight and that it's mail store is dangerously large, having a secondary mail server in place suddenly makes a lot of sense.

A new Exchange 2010 box is currently being set up, but the secondary mail server will remain in place even when the new Exchange server is brought online, so this won't be a wasted exercise.... I also want a gateway box in place to filter and relay mail to the primary server, or to the secondary server if the primary is unavailable. Currently our outer perimeter is:

ISP supplied CISCO router
Draytek VigorPro 5510 UTM

Untangle running in bridged mode (primarily used for SPAM filtering, URL blacklisting, and very little else) Exchange 2003 sits behind the Untangle box. This is how I want to end up:

CISCO >> Draytek >> Ubuntu gateway >> Exchange/secondary mail server

I know I could replace/remove the Draytek but I want it to remain for several reasons, including lots of VPN dial-in users already configured and that it offers us an additional layer of email antivirus scanning before things hit the Exchange box. No point switching all of our remote workers over to new tunnels unnecessarily...

I have done some research and have started testing a pilot secondary mail server using Ubuntu/postfix DNS is properly set up and MX records and reverse PTR records are all present and correct, and things are looking encouraging so far. Before I go out over deep waters and start to flounder, has anyone who has done something like this got any obvious howlers I should be looking to avoid ?

Server :: Build The Virtual Machines To Exclude The Actual Mail Files And Mail Logs From CentOS?

Oct 12, 2010

I have to administer a few mail servers, a mail log server, 4 nameservers and a web server -all running on Centos 5 server distributions. Now I have a task: to avoid accidental crashes on the production servers while installing updates, my boss asked me to do clones (these clones will all be VMware virtual machines) of the servers (EXCLUDING the actual e-mails and mail log contents) and then to run those clones on VMWare Server. This way, first I will install and test updates on the clones and - if they will be running without crashes - I will apply the updates on the real production servers themselves. I have already installed VMWare Server 2.0 I have a few questions:

- How do I build the virtual machines to exclude the actual mail files and mail logs? Can I use VMware Converter for this purpose, or do I have to use another program?
- How do I actually do this cloning? Is there a tutorial on how to do this?

Debian :: Mail And IM Server Setup ?

I would like to set up a mail and instant messaging server running on squeeze. It will be running on a 1ghz celeron (pentium 3 era) with 1gb ram and 10gb hdd (I'm assuming these are high enough specs) It will have less than 10 accounts and probably no webserver (not sure if good idea). I am also unsure of what IM protocols would be best for this. I would prefer to do all this from the command line if possible (so long as it's not too hard) and preferably from a remote machine (so SSH?) I prefer IMAP if possible but pop3 and smtp are also fine. I would also like to be able to connect remotely with encryption (not a big requirement -just a nice feature)
