Ubuntu :: Command Line Method Of Bypassing Data-DVD Encryption?
Apr 23, 2011
I'm trying to backup my old PC games so that I can finally banish their CDs to the attic once and for all. I've just been using the DD command to grab iso's of my games so far, while keeping their keys in a text file (see the DD command below). However, I just hit my C&C collection and I'm having some problems with some of the newer games like Renegade and Yuri's Revenge. I think they must be copy protected or something. 4 of my last discs have stopped copying at exactly 1.7MB (3 seperate DVD drives, 2 IDE, 1 USB enclosed). Can you guys think of anything else that will cause DD to fail at this location? Any ideas? I'd prefer it to be a command line option, as I'm trying to make things go as quickly as possible. Here's the command I've been using. code...

As I recent convert from Ubuntu to Centos, I have a lot to learn. In Ubuntu, I can plug in a memory stick, run the menu option: System/Adminstration/Partition Manager, highlight the memory stick and choose "Format: Encrypt"
In Centos, my memory stick is /dev/sdc1, how do I, using command line: format it as /ext3, encrypt it using cryptsetup, and set a password?

I want to encrypt a text using rsa encryption method. I did it using command openssl but i want it using my library api, the library api is as, int rsa_calc (unsigned char * msg, unsigned char * mod, int count, int exp, unsigned char result); I can't understand how i input public key (.pem file) and what will be the modulus (unsigned char * mod) and exponent (int exp) for any text.Is there any kind of formula to calculate modulus and exponent of the text.

I'm looking to find out exactly how to go about changing the encryption method of shadow passwords from MD5 to something a bit stronger, like SHA. I've been looking around for a bit now and haven't found out how to do it. I've gathered that I'll most likely need to change the /etc/pam.d/system-auth file. Right now, there is a line that looks like this:
password sufficient pam_unix.so md5 shadow nullok try_first_pass use_authtok.I'm guessing the md5 should be changed to something else, like sha256. What else? I know I'll need to reset all passwords once the change is made, but I thought there was someplace else that controls how the passwd command encrypts passwords.

I installed Fedora 10 on a pc I built from a barebones package, I have had no problems over the past couple months until recently. When I start up the pc the OS lags on a black screen with the cursor blinking. I have searched forums but I guess since I am a newbie I am still lost in the translations. What I am trying to do is save my files that are on the pc to a DVD-RW or my external hard drive before I have to reinstall the software again.
My questions are as follows:
How can I locate the files on the hard drive? When I have the bootable cd-rom inserted I am unable to locate the HDD. How can I transfer my files using the command line prompt? Finally, is it possible just to upgrade to the latest Fedora without losing my files and going through the data recovery process head ache? Or can I reinstall the OS and not lose my files?

My computer has broken and I cannot login. I don't know what caused it.
I am using Fedora 14 and so it is easy to retrieve my files with the Fedora 14 installation disk under the 'restore' option. I cannot however, work out how to retrieve my MySQL data.
Would anyone be able to shed some light on this matter?

I am investigating full disk encryption and have made a DD copy of the hard drive which has been encrypted, this DD file is stored on my computer for analysis.
First question is - Anyone know how i can access data in this DD file even though its been encrypted?
Second question - Is there a DD command where i can image the systems memory? I ask this because when a system is turned on, to get past the pre-boot authentication stage you need a password. From what i understand, this password will be passed in to ram when power is applied to the system. Making a copy of the memory will also copy the password?

I'm trying to write a GUI text encryption application. I wrote the encryption system in a No GUI application like this::
[Code]...
Now I'm trying to write a GUI version, using the same algorithm. Here goes a rough image of my main window code. If you scroll down you'll observe a coloured part. As you see, the text in the first textbox gets copied into clipboard. That is the part where my encryption system should encrypt the data in the clipboard, and copy it again, and later on the new data will be pasted. How am I supposed to write that? If I have to use another signal, what is the receiver of that signal?
[Code]...

I am building an android, from the source using make command. I want to achieve simple logging while this make is happening.
Aim:
I want to look/log for internal system calls that are being made after i do 'make' command in bash terminal. So that after the make is done, i can look and study the internal method/file calls made while make was happening. In this way i will come to know how the actual building process works.

I would like to keep this simple and if possible use a piped command as opposed to an all out complex method.I have a script that does many things for me, and one of them builds a basic simple system report (I know about lshw, but this is for me to learn as well as be functional)
I would like to add another pipe to remove the"model name:" portion.I do not really want to use the store in a variable first solutions if I can help it.

I really like that in Ubuntu when you type in a command that's not on the system you get a message saying the package that provides that command. Unfortunately it also slows down my system, so I would like a way to trigger this manually. Something like search-command command-I-dont-have
Is there any way to do this? I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 under andLinux but would also like to use this on a regular Ubuntu 9.04 install.

I know my way around MS Windows much better, but I just don't feel right trying to program something for Android on a Microsoft operating system. I am interested in Android programming so I followed the instructions on [URL] to install the environment on my computer...
I just installed the JDK, SDK, Eclipse successfully (or I assume):
* When I get to Step 4 where I'm supposed to run 'android' it will not run. I get the error message "android: command not found" (I am definitely in the right directory).
** When I double-click it in nautilus, it opens up in gedit. I can set the permissions in nautilus (through the properties - Allow executing file as a program) and get it to work,
My system:
Intel i7
Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat
android-sdk-linux-x86
eclipse 3.6.2

how to pass something more than a one-command startup for gnome-terminal. I will give an example of what I'm trying to do here:
Code:
#! /bin/bash
#
#TODO write this for gnome and xterm
[code]....
This same error occurs if the gnome-terminal line is changed to
Code:
gnome-terminal -e mcTerm
Is there any way to pass more than one command on to gnome-terminal? I have tried various single and double quoting senarios and in a final attempt, I abstracted to an exported function all to no avail. Perhaps even though gnome-term is better at many things than xterm, xterm trumps it in this instance.

Code: cmd='date | wc'
$cmd If this script is executed, an error is generated. The reason written was that "The execution fails because the pipe is not expanded and is passed to date as an argument".What is meant by expansion of pipe. When we execute date | wc on the command line, it goes fine.then | is not treated as an argument. Why?

I tried
Code:
chown -R owner:group *
which does not work on the invisible directories (why?). When I used ".*" as wildcard it changed all (visible) files including the parent directory (the one I was currently working in which is the "dot") . I can change the invisible directories owner and group using dophin but how is it done from the command line?

I know this isn't directly related to Ubuntu (even if the rest of my network is pure Ubuntu!), but I haven't had any luck uncovering this info through the usual channels. Does anyone know which port Android 2.2 on a VIA wm8650 uses to access the Internet? My Wifi is routed through a Linux firewall (Ipcop) which forces normal outbound Internet traffic via normal ports (80, 8080 etc) through the ipcop proxy, but the wm8650 somehow bypasses the proxy. I don't know whether I'm just missing the port the tablet is actually using.
