Will anything break if I change that to /bin/false?

CentOS 5 Server :: MySQL Shell Access Denied / Get It To Work?

Feb 20, 2011

I'm having a hard time to access MySQL from the local or remote shell.
If I try to access MySQL, using mysql -u root -pxxxx I get the error 1045 Access denied...

MySQL is running and I can access it, using phpmyadmin.

There must be something blocking shell access. Can anybody confirm and tell me how to check/configure for shell access?
I'm using ca preconfigured CenOS from PBX in a flash and it seems they did some security settings - but I can't find any further information.
I know I should probably post there, but the Mods didn't activate my account yet. And you know how it is if you try to figure something out. You won't stop.

Programming :: PHP/MySQL FOSS For Managing User Sessions On The Web?

Apr 24, 2009

My co-worker and I are working on this robotics project where robots are controlled over the web. I don't want to go into all the details, but basically the users visit a page where they have access to a PHP-based interface that allows them to send commands to robots in our tech lab (via an intermediate server). Our web server is running Apache.

Anyway, now we need to implement session control, with user-names and passwords so that only certain people can have access to the interface at a certain time, with access to only certain robots, et cetera. We were hoping there was some kind of pre-fab FOSS solution for handling both the session control and maintaining the MySQL user/password database.

My co-worker knows a little PHP, and I know a little MySQL, but we are both noobs enough that we would prefer to do as little of this from scratch as is possible. We don't have a lot of time, and I know it is easy for inexperienced MySQL programmers to introduce security vulnerabilities.

Programming :: PHP Auto Removes Stale Sessions On It's Own But Doesn't Remove From MYSQL Table

Aug 24, 2010

I know PHP auto removes stale sessions on it's own, but that doesn't remove them from the MYSQL table. So I was gonna make a cron script that ran once every hour that removed any MYSQL shopping cart item from the table if the original session_id that created it does not exist anymore.

From my understanding a session_id is an "actual" file located somewhere on the harddisk (is it not? correct me if I'm wrong), so I was going to do a simple check for each item in the shopping cart to check for it's original session file, if it didn't exist on the harddisk, then simply remove it from the mysql table.

Server :: Which Php Command For Shell Interaction Shall Use?

Dec 26, 2010

As homework for my study I have to do some kind of browser GUI to send commands to mysql command line tool and to show the output in the browser. I already set up sudo to have the right permissions for the www-data user. In the php documentation I found that one of the following four commands are probably for tasks like mine.

exec
passthru
shell exec
system

Can anyone tell me which one is the best for my requirements? The idea is to use php from the browser to connect to mysql like on the command line with: "mysql user=username password" And then give back the output of the command line to the browser. If the above is working then the next step would be to put a link in order to execute the command show database; again through php by clicking that link. After clicking this link it would give back to the browser what the command line would display.

Ubuntu :: Run Sessions Menu From Command Line?

Jul 8, 2010

I want to find a way to bring up the session menu without using the Indicator Applet Session in the default gnome panel. I've figured out how to do this for the main menu with a keyboard shortcut (Alt+F1). And I found Ubuntu documentation here that says Super+Esc will bring up the Sessions Menu in Lucid but it doesn't work for me. I could create a custom launcher if I knew what command would bring up this menu but I can't find any info on this. Basically I want to get rid of the default gnome panel but still have the functionality of the Sessions Menu.Note: I removed the Me Menu from my Indicator Applet Session by running sudo apt-get remove indicator-me in a terminal. Would this be interfering with the keyboard shortcut?

Server :: Httpd Sessions Never Terminate

Dec 10, 2010

I have an issue with my web server. We are running RedHat Enterprise Linux 3.0 with Apache 2.0 and Tomcat 5.5. The situation has arisen that the httpd sessions never terminate. New connections continue and continue to be created and never die. I have restarted the apache services to reset the connection and have even rebooted the server, however, to no avail. Yes, that does the trick of getting the web sites operational, however, this is not a solution.

I have searched and searched here, www.google.com/linux to no avail. I have looked through the apache.org bug tracker and can't find anything like what I am experiencing. This happened 6 months ago and I got lucky and it stopped, however, the situation has resurfaced. I have reviewed the logs and found nothing that provides any insight.

During the business day, the number of httpd connections continue to grow and I decided to let it see how high it would get before the web sites would crash. That magical number is 203. Now that it is later in the evening and about 2 hours since I restarted the httpd services, I now only have 59 connections. However, I'm fairly certain based upon the traffic on these 2 websites, that in the evening, there aren't many connections after 2000 hours.
