I just installed a fresh install of 9.10 on my amd64. when it starts it locks up right away. i know that this has to do with my nvidia card. i've had to do this in the past. but since it locks up i have no way to get into the command line. ctl-alt-F1 does not work. is there a way to just have it boot right to the command line without loading up gdm?

I used the network manager to configure my eth0 interface. It is working fine. I have found the nameserver entries in /etc/resolv.conf files. But the /etc/network/interfaces file does not carry the ip, netmask, gateway, network and broadcast entries. It only has a entry for the lo interface. where are the settings for eth0 as done by the network manager, stored in case of ubuntu?

I decided on a whim to pursue certifications in other operating systems (currently 70-620 and 70-290 certified with Microsoft) and bought a book on Fedora 10 and installed it on my extra PC. First issue I ran into was that due to my graphics card being an ATI I needed to run in text mode (based off posts on these forums) then once I finally got everything under control and installed, it loads directly into Command Prompt (you folks call it GRUB right?) I can log in as root but I can't do anything this way.It won't even allow me to do things like accept the end user license agreement or create new users or see the GUI.

I need to execute evince from command line or from a shell script and open it directly in full screen, or start some program for presentation.
I mean:
$ evince (this opens evince)
$ evince /dir1/dir2/file.toview (this opens evince and the file.toview but not in full screen)
$ evince /dir1/dir2/file.toview 'in mode presentation'

So I just partitioned my hard-drive, one side with windows the other to set free for ubuntu. It all worked fine. I put in the liveCD of ubuntu 9.10 and installed on to the partition. However, I have a problem. When it boots up it asks me to either boot into linux 2.6 or windows 7. Windows 7 works fine, but when I boot into ubuntu, the loading screen comes up and then it doesn't seem to boot into GDM. It's all command-line interface. I've tried sudo apt-get update and upgrade, but it isn't connected to my network yet so I can't do that. What can I do?

I stupidly turned off my computer as I was updating to KDE 4.7. Now when i start it i get to the log in screen, but imputting my username and password just causes the Xserver to restart and i get back to the log in screen.I know there are many other packages I should install as part of the update and i think this will solve my problem, so i am trying to connect to wireless through the command line login, and then install the updates.

I've been having issues setting up the wireless interface on my Ubuntu server (command-line only, no GUI) and I can't seem to get it working. It seems as though the card is recognized, the drivers are installed and the interface is up, but it fails to connect. I have no idea where I'm going wrong. I have WPA and a MAC filtering setup on my wireless router. An exception has been made for this PC's MAC address and I've manually entered the connection details into /etc/network/interfaces.

I'm running Suse 11.3 with KDE4.I have an icon in my Kickoff Application Launcher for xterm. WhenI click on the icon, it apparently executes the command /usr/bin/xterm which generates a large window with a large font.I would like to get a smaller window with a smaller font. I knowhow to do that on a command line but to execute the commandI need to _already_ have a window open so I can run the command. So how do I (a) add a new icon to the KDE launcher which generates the command I want or (b) change the existing iconso that it executes MY command and not the basic /usr/bin/xterm?

I have installed Ubuntu 6.06 LTS via the command line interface. I installed onto Microsoft Virtual PC on the mac. The installation completed successfully. On first boot, I see the text is spread out very wide on the screen. It's like the screen has been zoomed out greatly.
I assume I have to modify the x11 configuration, but I forget how to do this.
Here is an image of the screen:
I tried installing a more recent version of Ubuntu but ran into other troubles. more on that later.

The problem is that this program transmits the whole graphical interface, which is slow, but I just need to use the command line with these computers. I am aware of ssh, but my university won't give me access to theses computers over the internet.

My computer has broken and I cannot login. I don't know what caused it.
I am using Fedora 14 and so it is easy to retrieve my files with the Fedora 14 installation disk under the 'restore' option. I cannot however, work out how to retrieve my MySQL data.
Would anyone be able to shed some light on this matter?

I have two computers that have a direct ethernet wire between them. The interface is set to a static ip address on each side, and under control of the NetworkManager.
About 1/10 the time the interface does not start. The messages log file will show:
Jun 22 13:01:22 owl10 NetworkManager[601]: <info> (p6p1): carrier is OFF
Jun 22 13:01:22 owl10 NetworkManager[601]: <info> (p6p1): new Ethernet device (driver: 'r8169' ifindex: 2)
Jun 22 13:01:22 owl10 NetworkManager[601]: <info> (p6p1): exported as /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Devices/0
[Code].....
So, I imagine there is a race condition where both boxes wait for the other to start the interface.
My question: Is there anyway to force NetworkManager to bring up an interface even if there is no Carrier?
BTW, this problem started recently on Fedora 13 after some upgrades. We upgraded to the latest Fedora 15 to try and solve it, and it now appears more often than it did on Fedora 13.

The sound plays through from the inputs to the output, and it's volume is controlled by alsa mixer, but no programs can pick up the stream, including the PulseAudio and Gnome Volume controls.I have tried many of the suggestions to be found in these forums for sound issues, including removing Pulse, configuring the model in alsa-base.conf, and messing with every setting I can find. Here are the outputs from the commands from the troubleshooting guides:
