Server :: Resize2fs After Adding LVM PV Hangs / Crashes
Feb 4, 2011
I'm somewhat a newbie at LVM and have encountered a real problem for me. During resize2fs after extending my LV i ended up with a crash. Now I'm worried I have lost all my old data. How can I proceed to get the volume in working order?
NoFear ~ # lvextend -L+400G /dev/vgftp/lvftp
Extending logical volume lvftp to 4.16 TiB
Logical volume lvftp successfully resized
NoFear ~ # umount /dev/vgftp/lvftp
NoFear ~ # resize2fs /dev/vgftp/lvftp
resize2fs 1.41.10 (10-Feb-2009)
Please run 'e2fsck -f /dev/vgftp/lvftp' first .....
NoFear ~ # e2fsck -f /dev/vgftp/lvftp
e2fsck 1.41.10 (10-Feb-2009)
Pass 1: Checking inodes, blocks, and sizes
Pass 2: Checking directory structure
Pass 3: Checking directory connectivity
Pass 4: Checking reference counts
Pass 5: Checking group summary information
/dev/vgftp/lvftp: 308343/505479168 files (18.3% non-contiguous),
1006593162/1010942976 blocks
NoFear ~ # resize2fs /dev/vgftp/lvftp
resize2fs 1.41.10 (10-Feb-2009)
Resizing the filesystem on /dev/vgftp/lvftp to 1115800576 (4k) blocks.
** CRASH / HANG **
25hours waiting and nothing happens. No disk I/O going on or anything. I have no backups or anything of this volume. What can I do do revert the process to get the disks back? I have not done anything at all after the crash/hang in fear of destroying something.

Ubuntu + Unity = bad, so I installed Fedora 15 with Gnome 3. I am very happy with it! The only thing that bothers me at this point, is the fact that Kdenlive keeps crashing when opening MOD-files. This is the error I'm getting:
Code:

I tried playing MOD-files with mlt, but that failed also completely. At this point, I don't know what to do.

I have been having a problem with the computer I'm using were it keeps freezing (mouse works, however nothing else does). Usually to get out of it I have to use REISUB signal for a forced reboot. This only used to happen once in a while, but was still annoying. Tried a new video card, new motherboard... neither helped. Other Linux OS had the same issue, Windows XP works ok.Yesterday after running a full update it got worse (first since I installed OpenSuse 11.3 64 last weekend). It appears that Firefox will crash X completely. Rendering got slower and Compiz disabled (not a big deal). Opera also crashes and just by resizing a window or scrolling down on gedit also do the same. I found a few errors on my /var/log/messages log, looks like it's related to the driver that I'm using (noveau). I'm pretty good with Linux, but when it comes to X is the same as speaking another language to me! :-S

I upgraded my laptop from 10.10 to 11.04 yesterday. On the reboot part of the installation and on all subsequent boots, the loader gets as far as the initial Ubuntu splash screen before switching to verbose mode and dying in interesting ways.
If I boot using wireless, the display flashes six times, then sometimes hangs around before reporting: iwlagn 0000:08:00.0: Aggregation not enabled for tid 0 because load = 4 (this number can be anything from 0 to 10)
If I boot using a network connection, I get the same splash screen and six flashes before the system hands, usually at the message: Stopping userspace bootslash [OK]
I am not keen on reinstalling from CD except as a last resort as I have a number of files that I do not want wiped.

I am experiencing frequent crashes for my browsers (FireFox, Opera, Konquerer). It doesn't seem to be related to the amount of tabs I have open, sometimes it will crash on 1 tab, and sometimes it is fine to have 20 tabs up. In addition to this, some flash videos hang after 3 secs.
PC spec:
OS: SuSE 11.2 (x86_64)
GUI : XFCE (KDE 4.0 back up)
Intel Q6600, 2GB Ram DDR2, 9800GX2

I've been using Ubuntu for quite a while, several years, though several upgrades. Experimented with various things, uninstalled some and various other messy activities. Some things don't work as well as they used to. Sometimes my system crashes, or hangs for a while before coming back. I still get a KDE screen when I shut down, though I attempted to uninstal that desktop. I would like to start over, that is with as little trouble possible to reinstall from scratch. Have to save my user directories, also the directories for my LAMP applications.

I have "successfully" installed both LinuxMint 9 "Isadora" and Ubuntu 10.04 on it, and found I have the same problem with each. That is, I am able to:
1. startup to the live CD
2. format the hd to be all Linux
3. startup the computer from the HD into Linux
Then, I get these problems, in both distributions
4. Monitor hangs on the desktop background for an immensely long time (maybe 30 minutes?) with no cursor or menu bar or status bar or anything
5. Eventually, I get a desktop that I would expect and I have an option to do things like update, customize etc. however at this point, the cursor is invisibile. I am able to navigate and get around by guessing (menubar elements highlight when being hovered over)
6. After about a half an hour in an operable mode (I have tested network connections, played videos and music from external HD media stores, you name it.) the monitor will mysteriously crash.
Clarification:
#4: nothing I do while the dekstop background is featureless, meaning any key on the keyboard or any normal key combination, including all the F keys, ctrl-F keys, ctrl-alt-delete or ctrl-alt-escape or alt-opt-delete or alt-option-escape etc. Nothing does anything. It is utterly unresponsive.
#6 What I mean by "mysteriously crash"? the monitor goes black and then the top half starts displaying what looks like a super-zoomed in bar code. The only way out of this is to force the computer to restart.
Since this happens in both the linux distributions, I'm at a loss to figure what's causing it.
I am using a Compaq FS7600 17 inch CRT monitor with this Dell Dimension 2400.

I needed to shrink a filesystem so I could take a drive out of a RAID5 array. I unmounted the fs, then ran e2fsck on it and it found 5.9% non contiguous files but no errors. Then I ran resize2fs -f /dev/whatever 1300G (initial size was 2500G, used space was at this time only 1136G). It started operating and after some hours I received a lot of messages on the output as mdadm started resync in the background. Now the resync is done but nothing moves. Here is the output I received in the terminal window where resize2fs was ran :
Code:
computer:/# e2fsck /dev/stold/storold
e2fsck 1.41.3 (12-Oct-2008)
/dev/st/stor a t mont 68 fois sans avoir t vrifi, vrification force.

I understand that it doesn't do nothing anymore, as it doesn't consume any CPU cycles anymore. What can I do now ? It's running near 24 hours now ! How can I try to escape from this situation without loosing all data ?

I'm currently in the process of remove a drive from an lvm. I am following this guide
[URL]
and to be honest I have also posted this question at [URL] but I have a fair amount of data at stake here and really need to make sure I'm acting safely. This is certainly not a place to button mash or guess.this is the 2nd drive that I am removing, the first one went off without a problem. However, I just received this error
Code:
resize2fs: Can't read next inode while trying to resize /dev/vg0/lvol0
and I'm not sure what it means or where to go from here. The entire output is
Code:

resize2fs 1.41.4 (27-Jan-2009)

I have a machine running Arch Linux (2010, I believe) with a 6TB RAID-5 array hooked up to a Highpoint RocketRaid 2320. I've been having issues with the RAID controller's drivers and the latest Linux kernels thanks to the driver not being open-source, and as a result I am migrating the system to Windows Server.Problem is that the 6TB disk originally was comprised only of an ext4 partition.I shrunk the partition down as much as I could, and added a NTFS partition in the empty space so I could start moving files. That went fine. Problem is that now I need to shrink the ext4 partition again, move files, shrink again, etc. The second run through resize2fs is taking way longer than the first pass.It seems to be getting stuck at pass 3:
[root@nar-shaddaa rc.d]# resize2fs -p /dev/sdb3 863000000
resize2fs 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010)
Resizing the filesystem on /dev/sdb3 to 863000000 (4k) blocks.

I am running Oracle Enterprise Linux x64 5.5 on an HP Proliant DL380 G6 attached to various SAN's via fibre channel. I have setup multipath, edited multipath.conf, lvm.conf, and after some trial and error, everything behaves and looks as it should in regard to multipath. However, when I try to resize a multipath ext3 lvm filesystem, The operation runs for a while, but then dies and I get the above error. I then see this error in /var/log/messages:
EXT3-fs warning (device dm-9): ext3_group_add: No reserved GDT blocks, can't resize
-I am only using the /dev/mapper/ paths to the filesystem (ie, resize2fs /dev/mapper/testvol-lvol1 128G)
-if I unmount the filesystem, resize2fs works fine
-Have tried removing and re-adding journal file via tune2fs with no luck
-The VG has plenty of room in it and is composed of a 100GB and 200GB partition.
-Inode resize is on in the filesystem
I am wondering if online resize2fs is only for small filesystems or not recommended as a best practice or just not generally done??? As I mentioned, the operation works fine offline if I unmount the filesystem, but this won't be an option once system is in production.

I rented a server to run CS 1.6 game servers. I had someone install Apache and configure my server to be able to use control panel for my game servers( i am running 4 gservers and have 5 ips = 1 ip is free). When i type my primary ip in the web browser it displays the Apache test page.
My question is can i add pages to the Apache without messing up anything with the control panel or my game servers. I am familiar with html. My primary ip is used for 1 of th egame servers but i can change that if necessary. And if possible to add pages how to add a site name, sth like [url] instead of entering the primary ip to display the content.

I'm using ProFTPd as my FTP server on a CentOS 5 box. Since updating to version 1.3.3c, I seem to have very specific problems. Connections work quite fine with about any FTP client out there, including the basic ftp command from the Linux prompt. However, when trying to connect to that server with LFTP, things go wrong. When connecting, all I get is [Connecting] then [Logging in...] and then nothing. I have to add that SSL is forced off in lftp.conf (I read it could be the problem). I sometimes get a counter for reconnection, but it never works.
The command I use in lftp is : open -u <user>,<pass> <server_ip>, the ls for lftp to establish the connection. I don't see anything at all in the server's log. I just see "FTP session opened" and "FTP session closed" in /var/log/messages" and nothing in /var/log/secure. I can give you a strace if needed. Please keep in mind that the server WORKS with anything but LFTP and NCFTP (which I also tried).

I'm trying to use GParted from a liveusb to resize my ext4 Ubuntu partition, but it's been stuck on the "shrink file system...resize2fs" for two days straight. The progress bar is still going back and forth, and top shows a lot of CPU activity, but it won't move past this point. I know it's a bad idea to stop GParted while it's resizing, what I can do, maybe a way to check to see if it's actually busy resizing the partition?

I am ClearCase Admin, new to Linux administration and our development environment is in linux servers. I have found that our development server which is RHEL 3 (also ClearCase client) hangs when user gives find command. After some time of execution of the find command the server hangs. We have to hard-boot the server. Is this the normal behaviour of the Servers? This server which I am talking about is highly used.Sometimes 120 or more terminals will be opened and few compilation will be happening in the server. And same single user some times opens multiple terminals and works simulataneously. We have been monitoring the server and found out that during the workdays CPU usage % goes very high.

Afternoon all, we have an older box which hosts all our corporate mail, but he's a bit old, small hard drive, etc. We have a new app which sends a lot of mail and 2 weekends in a row has killed the box.So I want to play a bit with postfix, and have it installed and ready. The main question is can I have him 'send' all the mail out but keep the incoming since it's not much going to the primary? Naturally it's yes, but what do I need to look at record wise?I know there are new things like spf, spoofing, etc and when someone get's that message from admin@domain.com, there servers naturally reverse lookup, but he won't be the box that receives for that domain so will it simply not accept?

This probably sounds like a stupid question, but I need to add a NIC to an existing server running Ubuntu Server edition 8.10. My question is what changes I need to make once the NIC is physically installed? I guess it will not be autoconfigured, so I will have to add it to the /etc/network/interfaces manually, which is ok as I need to set it up with a static interface anyway. Is there a good How-to or set of instructions on how to do this?

I have configured a CENTOS 5.5 server with DHCP + DNS. The network environment contains clients to obtain IP dynamically and some amy be configured manually. Until noe I have not used any GUIs for the configuration.
Now I want to manually add some hosts to my DNS. Can this be done by directly adding the host names to data files (pointed by the f/w and rev zones)? Or should this be done differently?
What are the good DNS GUI tools available for CentOS?

I'm an experienced PC technician running a slackware 13.1 distro on a server at home. I've currently got 2x 1TB drives in the box allocated as raid1 for the OS and everything I want to run on the machine. I'd like to think my question/needs are fairly straight forward, I am buying 2x 2TB drives to add to this machine as it serves as a NAS box for one of its roles. I'd like these in raid0 as the data that would be going on it is not that important to me. The question is, after adding the new drives to the system, once I boot up, what do I need to do to the system to get the drives added and working sucessfully as a single raid0 volume that I can then samba share out to my network. To clarify, I understand a little of mdadm as I've used it to raid1 my existing setup when I installed, and I'm fine with the samba bit after.
