Ubuntu :: 10.04 LTS Hangs And Crashes Unexpectedly?
May 10, 2010
I recently did a clean install of lucid lynx amd64 on my desktop computer. After a some days of usage i started experiencing crashes or hangs.Twice my computer crashed and rebooted immediately after.3-4 times my computer hanged as in while listening to an on-line radio station music began to loop and the computer become completely unresponsive. The Apps i was running at that time i think were firefox vlc jdownloader ...My question is: In the event that this isn't a hardware problem since windoz are fine, is there some logs i can post/look at or same other app that can help me resolve this?

I am facing a problem with Eclipse after I installed it today. It keeps closing [unexpectedly] after I click a choice like closing one of the pop-up windows that shows after I choose an option from the menus in the top. With no errors returned or shows up! As an example, when I choose to create new project, and fill in the project information [Name, type, path] and when I click FINISH all Eclipse closes, and I need to re-open it again [I find the project that I created there].

flash version 10.0 r45 in firefox plays video, graphics, and sound just fine. however, while i'm playing a video on videos, or listening to pandora, the sound could unexpectedly crash. when this happens, sound doesn't just stop playing. it keeps playing but loops the sound every second or so - it's kind of strange to describe; the sentence, "hello, how are you?" could sound like "he-he-he-he ar-ar you-you-you". has anyone experienced this? i say it happens 'unexpectedly' because i can't replicate the crash on demand, but it happens in every firefox session. it seems that it does not matter what i'm doing - i've tried crashing it by making a flash video full screen and exiting continuously etc. because sometimes it happens when i'm going to full screen or changing tabs.
however, most of the time it happens when i'm not even touching the computer - i'm not sure if some background process can cause flash's buffer to overflow, or whatever. other times, it doesn't even need me to play anything for it to crash the sound in flash - it could loop sound from the first time i tried playing it in flash in that ff session. even when i exit firefox or pause the sound it takes a few second for the loops to stop. however, when i restart firefox the sound is fine until it crashes again and i have to restart, again! i tried removing libflashsupport as i read in other threads that it causes sound issues - no luck there. i uninstalled, installed and all that jazz. tried strace - doesn't report any flash errors for some reason, or as far as i can understand.
i also installed the flash debugger for use with the firebug extension, flashbug addon in firefox, but i'm not getting anything there either - i think it can't locate the flash debugger, although it lists the right version. i haven't had this problem with chromium yet, but i mostly use it when flash sound in firefox crashed and i don't want to reload ff; i think they use the same 'libflashplayer.so'? also, just to clarify, sound from the mplayer plugin works fine, and when the sound crashes in flash it does not cause ff to crash and quit. firefox continues to run normally but when i play sound in flash it starts looping. i've had sound problems in the past and i'm thinking there is something i messed up in the packages i have installed. i uninstalled pulseaudio because it was the only way i could find to get my skype working. how would i know if there are conflicting elements?
here's what i get from 'lsof | grep snd':
code:
firefox 956 angelos mem chr 116,4 3850 /dev/snd/pcmc0d0p
firefox 956 angelos 120r chr 116,2 0t0 3751 /dev/snd/timer
firefox 956 angelos 122u chr 116,4 0t0 3850 /dev/snd/pcmc0d0p
firefox 956 angelos 123u chr 116,8 0t0 3874 /dev/snd/controlc0
keytouchd 4518 angelos 4u chr 116,8 0t0 3874 /dev/snd/controlc0
knotify4 4683 angelos 12u chr 116,8 0t0 3874 /dev/snd/controlc0
kmix 4690 angelos 10u chr 116,8 0t0 3874 /dev/snd/controlc0
keytouchd 8563 angelos 4u chr 116,8 0t0 3874 /dev/snd/controlc0
it seems to me like there should be a conflict between all those using the same sound control? however, why would it just happen unexpectedly? also, is there a way that i could dissociate sound from firefox without having to reload a whole session with many tabs?

I upgraded my laptop from 10.10 to 11.04 yesterday. On the reboot part of the installation and on all subsequent boots, the loader gets as far as the initial Ubuntu splash screen before switching to verbose mode and dying in interesting ways.
If I boot using wireless, the display flashes six times, then sometimes hangs around before reporting: iwlagn 0000:08:00.0: Aggregation not enabled for tid 0 because load = 4 (this number can be anything from 0 to 10)
If I boot using a network connection, I get the same splash screen and six flashes before the system hands, usually at the message: Stopping userspace bootslash [OK]
I am not keen on reinstalling from CD except as a last resort as I have a number of files that I do not want wiped.

I have been having a problem with the computer I'm using were it keeps freezing (mouse works, however nothing else does). Usually to get out of it I have to use REISUB signal for a forced reboot. This only used to happen once in a while, but was still annoying. Tried a new video card, new motherboard... neither helped. Other Linux OS had the same issue, Windows XP works ok.Yesterday after running a full update it got worse (first since I installed OpenSuse 11.3 64 last weekend). It appears that Firefox will crash X completely. Rendering got slower and Compiz disabled (not a big deal). Opera also crashes and just by resizing a window or scrolling down on gedit also do the same. I found a few errors on my /var/log/messages log, looks like it's related to the driver that I'm using (noveau). I'm pretty good with Linux, but when it comes to X is the same as speaking another language to me! :-S

I've been using Ubuntu for quite a while, several years, though several upgrades. Experimented with various things, uninstalled some and various other messy activities. Some things don't work as well as they used to. Sometimes my system crashes, or hangs for a while before coming back. I still get a KDE screen when I shut down, though I attempted to uninstal that desktop. I would like to start over, that is with as little trouble possible to reinstall from scratch. Have to save my user directories, also the directories for my LAMP applications.

I have "successfully" installed both LinuxMint 9 "Isadora" and Ubuntu 10.04 on it, and found I have the same problem with each. That is, I am able to:
1. startup to the live CD
2. format the hd to be all Linux
3. startup the computer from the HD into Linux
Then, I get these problems, in both distributions
4. Monitor hangs on the desktop background for an immensely long time (maybe 30 minutes?) with no cursor or menu bar or status bar or anything
5. Eventually, I get a desktop that I would expect and I have an option to do things like update, customize etc. however at this point, the cursor is invisibile. I am able to navigate and get around by guessing (menubar elements highlight when being hovered over)
6. After about a half an hour in an operable mode (I have tested network connections, played videos and music from external HD media stores, you name it.) the monitor will mysteriously crash.
Clarification:
#4: nothing I do while the dekstop background is featureless, meaning any key on the keyboard or any normal key combination, including all the F keys, ctrl-F keys, ctrl-alt-delete or ctrl-alt-escape or alt-opt-delete or alt-option-escape etc. Nothing does anything. It is utterly unresponsive.
#6 What I mean by "mysteriously crash"? the monitor goes black and then the top half starts displaying what looks like a super-zoomed in bar code. The only way out of this is to force the computer to restart.
Since this happens in both the linux distributions, I'm at a loss to figure what's causing it.
I am using a Compaq FS7600 17 inch CRT monitor with this Dell Dimension 2400.

My laptop Dell Inspiron 1420 running Ubuntu 10.10 has started logging itself out every 30-60 minutes or so. I am trying to figure out what is the problem. I am wondering if it is
1) a hardware problem. I have recently replaced the cooling fan which required disassembling the whole thing into small pieces. The computer has worked without a problem for one day after the repair.
or
2) a problem with a recent update. The computer started logging itself out after a recent update. This coincidence is suspicious, but I hasn't noticed anyone reporting a similar problem with Ubuntu 10.10.
Is there a way I can see what is happening through the system log? What would be the keyword I should look for in the log files?
Can I track the last updates I have applied and roll them back?
The only solution I see now is to reassemble the laptop to see if it helps.

I have been running Ubuntu in my iBook/g4 800, 12' inch screen since jaunty and I must confess that I have had a fair share of graphics issue, however, since karmic, my computer would just go off especially when the AC is disconnected then on plugging back the AC, it comes back on but with the windows or the previous items on the screen completely deformed, that kind of deformation you would only blame graphics for. So the deformation stays for long and a reboot is all I'm left with. While still in karmic, i thought an upgrade to Lucid would get things back in place but that never happened, so I have been wondering what to do. I thought of a key combination that would turn on the screen in an iBook but I cant seem to find that through google, so I'm left with just fixing the underlying issue which according to some post on the Internet, wrong graphics settings might cause the monitor to shut down unexpectedly. I don't know exactly what exactly am I supposed to do? If that post is anything to go by, here is my xorg.conf(I know karmic+ does not need this but my system needs it) code...

As the title implies, I'm having an issue with svn, whenever I try to make an svn action, I get: svn: Network connection closed unexpectedly
I've done some Google-fu on this, and the obvious culprits don't seem to be at work. Specifically, the svn server does not use a nonstandard port, and I'm not using Tortoise SVN or putty, just going directly from the command line. Additionally, I was able to use the server as recently as this morning and no coworkers are having problems.

I recently updated to Kernel 2.6.32.7 available from the: Mainline. The reason I have done this is because it corrects an error that prevents my web-cam from functioning (Microsoft VX-3000). So, with this kernel I have a functioning web-cam *but* I have noticed now that my USB Hard Drive intermittently now unmounts. I am unable to remount the device without rebooting Ubuntu. The drive was mounting dirty but installing NTFSProgs and running NTFSfix was the solution for that. I have disabled power management completely on my machine by editing /etc/default/acpi-support and changing SUSPEND_METHODS to "none" and both ACPI_SLEEP and ACPI_HIBERNATE to false. This seems to have made the USB hard drive take longer before it unmounts but it does still unmount. Also as a GRUB2 boot option I have tried acpi=off but this also disabled my usb keyboard and mouse and my BIOS isn't flexible enough to work around that so I cannot use that option. With these things in mind are there any other avenues I could pursue and things I could try?
Edit: It may not be "unmounting" it just disappears. Also, I could try to whitelist the USB controller in /etc/default/acpi-support if I knew how to find out what it was called but I do not know how to do that.. Yet !
Edit2: I moved the physical plug to another slot where it connects on the computer. If this disconnects again I'll swap out the cable. If it disconnects again.. I'll go buy a huge 1TB internal sATA and call it a day. ~

I am using Intel Fortran compiler and experience a weird behavior
i have a subroutine writing data to netcdf called from the main program and causing a library error.
when debugging i saw that the program first jumps to line 411 of the source code and only then to the first executable line of the code at 96 (the source is attached).
when looking at the assembler code i see the same thing.
the netcdf error sais the unlimited dimension is defined more then once and that is waht is done in line 411
compiler flags were:
-g -C -traceback -check all -debug all -w95 -save -cpp -w90 -w95 -w -vec-report1 -r8 -i4 -heap-arrays

I'm running 5.2, mostly updated. I've got a user account that is really only used by some clients (Polycom phones) to log into vsftpd. Once every few days or so, the password on the account changes to something other than what I've specified, and I can't figure out why. The other user accounts on the system don't seem to be affected, though none of the other accounts are used by/for vsftpd.
chage shows that the account password should never expire, so I don't think that's what's happening. I'm wondering if VSFTPD is just not playing nicely with PAM. Is there a way to explicitly prevent vsftp from changing a user password? I can't seem to find anything like this.I'm not sure if this makes any difference, but the system is clustered using heartbeat/drbd. The users are unique to each of the nodes in the cluster, though, so I don't think this should really have any effect.
