I was installed xming application on windows XP & Windows 7to access Linux server's GUI session and i was able to access it using root account but when ever iam trying to access GUI using normal account it is giving some error.I am testing this since it is a freeware.
View 7 RepliesI cannot access a remote server(Ubuntu) using ssh or even using sftp from my ftp client. I've been accessing this server regularly for many months with no problem until now. There is a web server running and that's OK, so no problems there. I asked the owner of the server if he could access using ssh from within his LAN, which he could! So openssl is working from within the LAN, but not ouside of the LAN. I access the remote server by using one of [URL] free domain names. I'm aware that this service requires renewal or activity at least once a month and as far as I know this is up to date and working OK.
Is this a router gateway problem? I suspect that port 22 has been blocked, but what could block this port? It's been working well for so many months. As far as I can tell the owner of the server/LAN has not been tampering with the router, so what could be blocking port22? I'm currently accessing the server using vnc4server.
Another really weird thing is that when I access the terminal on the remote server via vnc4server and I ssh back to the server using one of [URL] free domain names, it works! So as I understand ssh is accessing itself by going out of the LAN and back to itself. This would suggest that port22 on the gateway router is working. But when I try to ssh from a pc outside of the LAN, I just get timed out!

View 1 Replies View RelatedI would like to experiment a "green" idea of virtual desktop where multiple users are served by a single powerful machine.
I have a server running 24/7. The monitor of this machine is turned off most of the time and the OS is on the login screen.
Other users, in the same local network, use less powerful machines, which could be a thin client or an old Pentium 3 machine. They access their accounts remotely and work with the GUI as if they were sitting in front of the server. Each user sees their own desktop (different themes, screen resolution, etc.). And of course it can happen that several users could log in at the same time.
The usage is modest: mostly web browsing and the usual default applications (office, wine, gimp, etc.). In particular no games or any demanding applications. The users want to use their desktop in graphical mode only.
Question: How do we call this way of using a server? Is it possible with Ubuntu? And how to implement it?
I was looking for:how to access my Linux machine(OpenSuse 11.3) that is being hosted at my hoster company from my home Win Pc, I found TightVNC , but I am confused, should I install it on both systems ( viewer and server) ? .. what about the VirtualBox , can i Access with that tool or it is only for mounting the local Virtual Machines?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWe have done an installation on a blade server (HP) for RHEL4.5.
The server have an HP smart array 2200 controller and during installation it can see the controller and disks just fine.
The installation completes up to the point where the system needs to reboot , however after the reboot it does not start up again and get stuck at the message: "Trying to boot from drive c:"
We used the rescue option to mount the installation and cant find nythign wrong, even with the grub setup (except that it points to hd96 as its primary disk). we tried changing this to hd0 as well but still no luck.
After about 3 installations we are still not having any luck.
I had Xming working great with XDMCP on my Debian 6 server at work. I had to replace the UPS and when I brought the machine back up xming/XDMCP no longer worked correctly. When I launch Xming and connect to XDMCP session I get the Xming window, the X Cursor but the GDM login window never appears. So I am getting some level of connectivity. The only change that was made to the server was that OpenVPN service was turned on. I do not know if this is the right log to be looking at but /var/log/gdm3/:0-greeter.log has this in it a number of times:

I am trying to remotely access a linux machine to run Cadence from my laptop.I downloaded Putty and Xming/XLaunch.I run Putty, enable X11 forwarding, then sign into my host address.I am successfully able to access and navigate through my home directory, however once I try and run Cadence, I get the attached error.

So we have provided an option to login (via vnc)to the server on web application when we need. so how we can enable vnc for a session (like 30 minit)? I'm using default vnc installation while installing rhel 4 nothing more installed by downloading. When I click session button on web page, I execute this command from my code
"service vncserver start"
then I can access server via vnc but when I click on disable button on web page, I execute this command from my code
"service vncserver stop"
but still I can login to server via vnc

I have three servers and no server is fully synced with remote NTP server.I don't know why it sync time alternatively with remote NTP server and LOCAL whereas there is not issue in connectivity/reachability of NTP server and NTP clients. When transfering a 2GB file from the webserver to the Mysql server.
The webserver's connection to the mysql DB server dies completely.
Need to restart the MYSQL process in order for it to come back online.
During this connection downtime, when using phpmyadmin on the mysql server shows no problem running queries etc.

I have a few windows app's that I use regularly for work that I have had limited success in running with wine or in vm's. I stumbled upon a how to to call apps in a vm to run seamlessly on the host desktop and did some playing and have succeeded in calling app's on my servers from my 'buntu desktop, the command I have set in my launcher for one of them (DIALux)
My question is, can I change the default application/file association in 'buntu with a custom command so I can double click on a file and have it open in one of these remote app's??If I can, what is the correct custom command to be using as using the above doesn't work at all, it just tries to open the file with rdesktop not the remote app.

I'm wondering what I could change in my postfix configuration to remedy this problem.
I tried setting smtp_tls_security_level = may = may but this did not change anything.
The issue is that my CentOS workstation is in a vlan from where the Intranet's DNS servers are unreachable. For browsing the web there is an ISA proxy server, which I presume resolves DNS for my firefox. However, wget, host, ping and aria2c fail to get any sort of DNS resolution since they're being run from command line.I have exported HTTP_PROXY value, which provides me internet access on console, but,only when I connect using IP address. It fails on name resolution.
My question is:May I redirect the DNS queries to my home PC which would be running a DNS server on a non standard port?I was thinking of putting nameserver 127.0.0.1 in /etc/resolv.conf and then put iptables rule to redirect 127.0.0.1:53 UDP to a.public.ip.address:3535 UDP..I don't know if I am shooting blanks or what, I am not very much aware of this kind of setup.My main need is to provide DNS resolution to console apps.I want to utilize my company's idle bandwidth for bulk downloads, so, using proxy, SSH tunneling through my Home PC is out of question.

From my server I need to run a command for backup on 25 remote servers (through a script). Now I have pushed the public keys for remote ssh connectivity on all of them and it works ( I can push files using rsync without the need to enter passwords on the remote servers), howver, I need to run the following command:
ssh odsadmin@10.139.111.1 'cp -a /var/www/life /var/www/life-v4'
when I run this command, I keep getting asked to enter the password, I even tried putting sudo in front of the cp, but still get the request to enter the password.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am implementing an automated backup scheme so I created a shell script which first creates SQL dumps for all MySQL databases, then retrieves all websites from the /var/www directory of a remote server. The latter is working as I am using rsync to get the remote files.However, the MySQL dumps being retrieved are the ones from the local server which is not what I want. I want to get the SQL dumps from the remote server as well.I have a tunnel between the local and remote server which I can connect to without using any password (I added the public key to the authorized_hosts), so I tried to add the following code to the script:
ssh user@192.168.x.xxx
I then attempted to retrieve the SQL dumps and exited from the remote server. However this does not work as I still have to enter exit manually in the terminal for the SQL dumps to be retrieved from the remote host. I don't know why this is happening. This is what the script is trying to do:

ssh user@192.168.x.xxx
//retrieve SQL dumps

Is there a way to connect to the remote host AND run the script's code on THAT remote host?
