I have two custom tasks running daily. How do you give priority to one over the other?One of them is configured via the logrotate.conf. The other sits directly in cron.daily.I'd like the one in cron.daily to run after the script that is in logrotate.Please can you advise how to do this...

At that rate it could also be off for the other periods as well (weekly, monthly) Is there solution that will allow them to run once they are online after the appointed time? using a cron entry that runs every 15 or 5 or 1 minute.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have added some executable scripts to /etc/cron.daily but don't get the stdout/stderr output from them as mail (or anywhere else I have found). At least one of them is running (because I can see that it has added a file to the disk).
The peculiar thing is that I do get the output from /etc/cron.daily/0logwatch (part of the logwatch package) as an email each day.
The MAILTO line in /etc/crontab is "MAILTO=root" (unchanged from default). Same for /etc/anacrontab.
I do have an alias at the end of /etc/aliases which redirects root's mail to my own account, but this alias works fine for mail I send manually. (It also appears to work fine for the output from the file /etc/cron.daily/0logwatch.)
It seems that cron is not upgrading my Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server, no GUI installed. I changed /etc/crontab and watched apt running:

However, I would like to stick to Packamn repo. I have tried to change Packan repo Priority from 99 to 120, but I still get the same offer. If I protect the Audacity in Software Management, I will I be able to upgrade to new version of Packamn's Audacity if it hits repo in future?
I want to give priority access for some users when they logon to the Redhat Server. I changed in the /etc/security/limits.conf file but also i am not able to get the priority .

I made a big rookie mistake in a script in cron.daily, which emptied the directory when I tested it... now I'm left with an empty cron.daily directory, and from what I know there definitely were more scripts there than only my own. Does anybody know what scripts CentOS 5.4 (Final) needs in the cron.daily?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have noticed that in the /etc directory there are some subdirectories of /etc/cron.daily and /etc/cron.hourly. Also I have determined that there is a service included as part of the Fedora OS 'crond' which I have started with the use of 'service crond start'. My question is this. If I drop an executable file into the '/etc/cron.daily' directory will it just run? If not what configuration files should I go about editing to run my executable daily? There seems to be a pretty large network of cron related files. I'm trying to make sense out of all of it.

now I have a sym-link to /etc/cron.daily but I do not see any new backups
I have BT4 as an iso image and start it up by booting from cd, when i try the command root@bt~:startx it comes up with this fatal error. what can i do to get this work? and of course im new at this.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a ts3.desktop file in my /usr/share/applications folder that I want to run on system boot. I have typed the following commands which don't work

Then in the editor, I typed the following line at the bottom of file. I also made the necessary carriage return after this line.

Then I pressed ctrl+o to save it.
After I put these commands in, I did the following command to troubleshooting this issue, see below.

But after I reboot and nothing happens, the application doesn't start.
Some of you are probably not going to believe this, but I've been using Linux for like four years and have never used cron for task scheduling before. Now I want to and I'm not sure how to do it. Could somebody link me to some good info? The results of a Google search were kinda confusing.

1) I have to find on which core a particular task is running on .
OR
2) I have to just log whenever my task is scheduled on any of the cores with the cpu core number & timestamp info. I am ready to modify the kernel to do printk or some logging . I guess there used to be 2 fields called 'processor' and 'last_processor' in task_struct in older kernels which probably had this information .
So what do I do to find out on which core a particular task is running on ?

Are there any utilities that are simple-to-use and can display the tasks that are running on each of the cores , including the cpu core info ? top , mpstat etc do not tell you on which cpu core a task is running on .

This repeated over and over again. My temperature was never to high 40-55, and I found a suggestion to update my kernel to 2.6.37-020637. After doing so there is no longer the thermal limit exceeded error but the computer is still running poorly. The system is slow and again no programs are showing up in the task bar when open.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have 3 cronjobs set up on my Unix server . Out of which 2 cron jobs run the same script but at different times and the other one runs another script.
So in the 2 jobs which are set to run PMDaily.sh for eg , One runs on Sunday at 8AM and the other runs monday to friday at 6 AM . How ever the Sunday cronjob works (runs through the crontab) but the Cron job set for Monday to Friday is not working. However manually if i run this script it workd perfectly.
Please let me know what could be the possible reasons for this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've setup a git-svn repo with cron to fetch from the svn repo daily. I have a script to do the fetching, and this is what is invoked by cron. Everything is fine with the repo, and the script works fine when executed manually. However, when it runs under cron, empty files get dropped into the .git directory. The files have names that look like they are some base64 output, e.g. juTrvjP6m8 and kcKf3hu3b4. Two of these files show up for every cron run. I thought these might be commit hashes, but they're not, git-show says it's an unknown revision. I set-up the repo as follows:

The last line pushes the repo to a separate (bare) public repo from which others can clone. I'm piping the output from the cron job to a file, which looks like this:

The line "fatal: unable to run 'git-svn'" is alarming, but the fetch seems to go ahead anyway. Where are these empty garbage files coming from, and how to stop them? Am I in for bigger problems in the future?
I've been having a bit of trouble running a shell script with cron. A friend of mine does a community radio show and the station has a live stream but no podcasts, so I've set up a script to record the stream and encode it as an mp3 while I'm away using mplayer and lame -that's what I'm trying to do anyway.
Here's the script, but it doesn't seem to run- at least, I don't see any of the files it should be outputing, would they be in the cron.weekly directory (where I have the script) or in my home directory?

I then wish to rsync this to a NAS I have located in another building: 0 3 * * * rsync -av -e ssh --delete /backups/ root{at address}:/DataVolume/os_backups/
(yes, I'm rsyncing as root. I absolutely loathe it, but I got thrown into an quasi-SA position with a ridiculous to-do list and no time to do it. I'm having to make things just work and then go back and try to improve them/learn how. I couldn't make it work in a non-root way quick enough, so for now I'm having to cron rsync jobs as root because of all the differing file permissions on this samba/MySql server. I set the NAS to only accepts ssh from the server IP, and we're behind a campus firewall... It's serious trial by fire.) The crontab also has rsync commands for the samba areas, our specialized chemistry software and affiliated MySQL databases............
