View 5 Replies View RelatedI have just been gifted with a Linux dedicated server for the next six months, with an option to renew after that time has expired, and I'd like to set it up for FTP/P2P use. I do have some familiarity with Fedora from work, but only as a pre-installed desktop OS. The company providing the server has asked me to choose a OS, so of course I picked the one with which I already have some knowledge. They've also asked me to provide partition and mount point information, and it's here that I'm having some problems. I've spent most of my free time today reading everything I could about partitioning for a server, and I'm still not comfortable making this decision on my own.
The server comes with two drives - one 500GB and one 1TB, and 8GB RAM. My thinking is to use the 500GB drive for the OS, and the 1TB for media storage. I know I still have a good bit of learning to do, but I just want to get the blasted thing set up so I can get on with the hands-on part of figuring out how it works.
I'm trying to set up a VPN for my home so I can ssh from my Mac to the linux desktop on my LAN remotely, but I have no idea what to do. The internet seems to suggest using a VPN, but I have no idea what's involved with setting something like that up, and I'm not even sure that's what I need to do. The linux desktop is on my LAN along with a few windows xp computers, if that matters. Does anyone care to either help or point me in the direction of good information (preferably suited for networking beginners)?

One of the things I had working in the older system was a dns server with accompanying monthly update of the root hints file. I tried working through a dns how-to to set this up again, but it seems much has moved around since I last played with this. All of the files listed in the how-to are not where it says they should be. I am looking for a better reference on keeping the dns server running with current server information.

My task is to create a script that would pull the old server(unix) and new server(linux) information and should display all the task information for migration/cutover purpose to the other areas. We already have a script that gives information about ip, subnet, gateway and other information as follows:

There is a main server which has info about all the servers and we execute the readip from the main server which gets info about any old or new server. So, in my script, I am calling this script, and I want to display only few contents of the readip output as follows:
Hostname: (I should display the server ip from the read ip only out)
Subnet: Should display the subnet from the readip output
Gateway: Same
Vlan: Same
When I try to hit my jsp pages all that gets displayed is the source code.I cannot find any log files that give me any information. It seems as though apache is not forwarding requests to tomcat6 but I cannot verify this. I need some direction on what is happening here. I'm lost and have run out of options.Would JAVA classpaths cause this type of behaviour if they are wrong?

i'm trying to use the database that was used by vpopmail and vqadmin with postfix and dovecot. By setting up dovecot to use mysql, i can query username and password for authentication but how do i create a user and edit its information in the database? Poastfixadmin only use database that was created along when installing it.
Any viable option aside from recode postfix to meet my criteria?
I'm working on program that is going through setting different baud rates onto a config file. After I set a new value i want to check if it's the correct one by reading from the serial port on the server unit. I know what to expect if it's the correct baud rate so that's no problem, but searching through the internett i've yet to find a compact solution to my problem.

I like the server login information that gets displayed when you login to a 10.04 server. It lists disk usage, CPU usage, Temperature etc...
Unfortunately I had problems installing 10.04 from a USB. At the end of the process the master boot record was stored on the USB and not the hard disk.
But now when I login to my server I don't get the server information.
How would you make NIS user information override local user information on client systems? This is what I think is right? Add nis on the passwd registration file on the second line Is this correct?

View 6 Replies View RelatedHaving some issues setting up sendmail on a (basically) blank RHEL 5.5 server setup. My ultimate goal is to be able to automagically send logs / errors / notifications to ourselves from the server.
Our basic setup is a Win 2003 domain with exchange running on mail.domain.com.au.
I've edited the '/etc/mail/sendmail.mc' and added the :

line to it.
Also added the domain (domain.com.au) to the '/etc/mail/local-host-names' files

When I try and send a mail from root or a test user to one of the domain accounts, it seems to go fine, i.e no errors are reported but it never gets delivered.

So it seems to be sent to the queue no problems and when I check the queue :

Not nothing ever gets received. Am I missing something? I have read and read and read but dont seem to be getting any furthur.
So in the end this server doesn't need to do anything except be able to send mail from root to an external mail address.
I was using Red Hat 7.3 forever and decided it was time for a change. I went to Fedora 10 but it was really buggy. CentOS 5.2 is VERY stable.Here is my problem.The server is command line only -- I tend to hate GUI"S.I setup Samba no problem disabling the ports needed through the firewall and that was straightforward.CUPS is a nightmare for me since CentOS locks down the cupsd.conf and then the firewall does its thing. I allowed port 631 through the firewall but then got lost on the cupsd.conf. It's been too long and the old redhat one won't work with CentOS (not surprising since it's a VERY old system) straight-forward CUPS tutorial for a command line interface. I just need it to be:
a) do this
b) do that
