Jan 16, 2011My gateway netbook was dual booted with windows 7 and ubuntu netwbook.,I was attempting free up some space on my netbook and decided that the ubuntu partition was expendable.I deleted it and sufficient to say I now can't boot boot up, I just get an error message, can't remember exactly what it is.I am getting a new computer and would kind of like to be able to recover the files on the computer.I have a USB netbook boot drive and am wondering how I would be able to install ubuntu without loosing the files.I have the usb key plugged in am now at the partition stage of the installation.

Aug 3, 2010I recently upgraded to 10.04 from 9.10 and have some questions:
1. Will a clean install of 10.04 perform better than my upgrade?
2. Will it get rid of the message I get at boot time about IRQ #18 being disabled.
3. The boot splash image does not appear after the upgrade. Will it appear after a clean install? (It does when booting from 10.04 live CD).
4. And finally: I can see that there are some 20 or so folders including home when I do ls /

Aug 2, 2011I am still running Ubuntu 10.04 still on my laptop and would like to upgrade. Is there a way to do this without losing all my current settings and applications? I guess I'm mostly trying to avoid having to do a fresh install. Also, is there a way to setup my update manager to just prompt me for an upgrade any time there is a new stable version of Ubuntu available?

Jan 1, 2011To run my other linux distros on another drive I have been manually entering the kernel and initrid info for each distro on the opensuse yast boot loader. For windows 7 it just runs the mbr on the drive windows 7 is on. However I can not get it to do that on the other linux drive. The problem for me is that on every kernel upgrade I have to manually change the info. I would rather have grub on the sdd linux disk take care of it on the upgrades. The drive that holds the other linux versions is sdd. Opensuse is on sdc.

Nov 10, 2010I have an Ubuntu Server 10.04.1 that I have given a static IP address. Every six hours or so I will lose connectivity to it and when I type ifconfig to look at the network information, it has been given an address via dhcp. If I run the /etc/init.d/networking restart command the IP address goes back to my static address and things are fine for another 6 hours or so. Here is what is in my interfaces file:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 10.60.82.15
netmask 255.255.0.0
broadcast 10.60.255.255
gateway 10.60.254.254
This machine is also a DHCP server and I checked to make sure there are no other DHCP servers on my network. Right now my fix is to have a Cron job running that runs the reset command every 5 hours, but I would like to find a more permanent solution.

Installing CVS on Redhat Linux Redhat Enterprise 4.0
The following steps give simple steps to install CVS software on Redhat Enterprise Linux 4.0.
1) Download the tarball cvs-1.11.1p1.tar.gz
2) Run "gunzip cvs-1.11.1p1.tar". You will get file called cvs-1.11.1p1.tar.
3) Then extract this file using command
"tar -xvf cvs-1.11.1p1.tar".
4) Then go to directory cvs-1.11.1p1.
5) There you will find a file called INSTALL. Read it once carefully.
6) Now run the command "./configure."
7) Build it using the command "make".
8) Install binaries/documentation using command "make install".
9) Now open file called /etc/services and add the following lines.
Cvspserver 2401/tcp # CVS client/server operations
cvspserver 2401/udp # CVS client/server operations
10) Open file called /etc/xinetd.conf and add the following lines to that file.
service cvspserver
{
Port = 2401
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = no
user = root
passenv =
server = /opt/bin/cvs
server_args = --allow-root=/home/cvs -f pserver
env = HOME=/home/cvs
log = /var/log/cvslog
}
11) Space on both sides of = in the above file is a must.
12) Restart xinetd services by running command " services xinted restart "
13) Check whether CVS is running on the port 2401 by using the following command "nmap IP |grep 2401". If the CVS server is running correctly it will give output as "2401/tcp open cvspserver ".
It doesn't output like "2401/tcp open cvspserver"

Apr 4, 2011I set up an apache webserver on a redhat enterprise server 6 last week. It works fine on the localhost. However, the webpage can't be accessed from the other computer. I didn't modify anything related to 'allow,deny' in httpd.conf. The only thing I've done is I added a rule in iptables to approve the access from a computer with a specific IP address. Since I am quite new to iptables, I don't know if there is anything wrong with my setting.
Even I stop iptables, the problem is still there. I don't know if my setting of iptables is correct. Or, there is anything else that I should do?

Jul 11, 2011at work place I have an HP ProLiant DL580 with RedHat Enterprise Server 5.4 x64. Today I cloned this machine using clonezilla. What I would like to do is restore the image to VMWare machine for personal purpose (I cannot perform tests on production machine). But after restoring on VMWare I got "Kernel Panic". That's normal due to different hardware.
Now, is there a way to remove the Kernel Panic and correctly boot the machine? I ask our tech department for the RedHat CD1 to enter the "linux rescue" enviromnent, then try to re-read the hardware list with
# chroot /mnt/sysimage
# kudzu
