How do i configure the system and user accounts so that the users can't access each others directories, delete system files, install packages etc.I know i am probably going to need tools like chmod mkdir useradd. But i can't figure out how.If you know a good tutorial, please point me in that direction.
I've just made my old, dusty computer into an Ubuntu Server. So far, i have installed a well functioned LAMP server, to host my Website. I have also installed a FTP-Server (proftpd) and i was wondering if i could manage my FTP accounts in MySQL so i could make an account creation page for it? If yes, how?
I've been tried to be system admin, programmer, network admin, or network engineer. So, I've been studying this and that... what so ever struggling to find my talent. Back in 2007-2008, I was MS server admin/comm tech. I saw a building running MS server for user computers and Red Hat 9 as a main system server. MS sever was a just one of the user accounts of Linux server. When I log in to Linux, I could see log menu to access MS server. How could somebody make this creative thing?I'm now a Network engineer because working with CISCO router and switch is easier than working as programmer or server admin. I've studied Oracle 10 and VMWARE also but there are ceasless stuffs that I need to study... For now, in regards of my limited brain power, network engineer is proper for me.
I wanna know how to create an account in linux and it gets the cgi-bin and all that stuff.2nd) I wanna know what I gotta do in order to access that account via tilde.example 203.232.33.3/~tom(name of the account)
We have a web server and are trying to meet a clients requirementes around accountability.Basically, everything in the system should be accomplished using user accounts that are individually identifiable. So basically, no root user, since that's anonymous. So how should we set up these user accounts?Being administrators, we want them to have easy access to files not owned by them, such as ones uploaded using FTP accounts or via apache. We want to be as secure as possible though.
My current thought is to add them to the root group so they have full read access throughout the system, and add them to sudo, but I worry that gives them too much control.
I like to run a mySql database server on a Ubuntu (which is no server) for local use only. Is there some instruction how to do this? I downloaded several DBMS but they all seem to assume a running server.
Because our visitors/customers are short term, and may be configured incorrectly with their own mail servers we automagically redirect all port 25 traffic going to internal IP's to our own mail servers while on our network.(postfix on centos 5.6)While I have taken some measures to prevent it from spamming, I would greatly appreciate some assistance.I will be putting in clamav, but I haven't configured it yet with the mail.I am using postfix, but can also put on procmail or even spam assassin
Having some issues setting up sendmail on a (basically) blank RHEL 5.5 server setup. My ultimate goal is to be able to automagically send logs / errors / notifications to ourselves from the server.
Our basic setup is a Win 2003 domain with exchange running on mail.domain.com.au.
I've edited the '/etc/mail/sendmail.mc' and added the :
Code:
line to it.
Also added the domain (domain.com.au) to the '/etc/mail/local-host-names' files
Also edited submit.mc and added
Code:
When I try and send a mail from root or a test user to one of the domain accounts, it seems to go fine, i.e no errors are reported but it never gets delivered.
From the mail logs:
Code:
So it seems to be sent to the queue no problems and when I check the queue :
Code:
Total requests: 0
Not nothing ever gets received. Am I missing something? I have read and read and read but dont seem to be getting any furthur.
So in the end this server doesn't need to do anything except be able to send mail from root to an external mail address.
I was using Red Hat 7.3 forever and decided it was time for a change. I went to Fedora 10 but it was really buggy. CentOS 5.2 is VERY stable. Here is my problem. The server is command line only -- I tend to hate GUI"S.I setup Samba no problem disabling the ports needed through the firewall and that was straightforward.CUPS is a nightmare for me since CentOS locks down the cupsd.conf and then the firewall does its thing. I allowed port 631 through the firewall but then got lost on the cupsd.conf. It's been too long and the old redhat one won't work with CentOS (not surprising since it's a VERY old system) straight-forward CUPS tutorial for a command line interface. I just need it to be:
Is it possible to install Ubuntu Server and have user accounts and log into the server via a Windows XP machine? Sorry if its a stupid question! Many thanks
I have recently discovered the following: when I attempt to connect to any of our machines that are OpenSSH 5.x (Ubuntu 10 or OpenSuSE 11.x in our case) as one of the users defined in the NIS domain that fails. For instance, me (user bepstein) can SSH into all those machines but not SFTP.I can SFTP into those machines on the network that are OpenSSH 4.x, however (CentOS 5.3 - 5.4, OpenSUSE 10.3).As a user defined locally on the machine (in /etc/passwd ) I can connect via either SSH or SFTP even if the machine is OpenSSH 5.x.Some further discussion of that issue is available here: http:[url]....
Have read a whole bunch of threads from how and troubleshooting but still having problems. Was thrown a box configured by someone who resigned today. Need to get mail from the box outbound via SMTP relay off our exchange server.
I'm in the middle of moving my lab to a new server in the middle of the school year.. and need to copy all the user accounts to the new box, hopefully with all the student's passwords and contents of their folders intact. And since we are using the system daily, I need to do it all in an hour or 2.I'm thinking I can just
1. diff /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow from the old the new 2. copy all the student folders to new /home 3. write a script to set the permissions on all the new /home folders to match the user names.
It seems easy and safe so long as I back up the 2 existing files..Any reason not to try? Or is there an easier way?
I am thinking of getting a domain name or ten I do not know were to point the domain to?
and what do I need to setup if a user wants a domain name to point to his account on the server? ok more like I want to have a few domains pointing to my user accounts I have setup on the server..can I do this directly or do I need a server domain first before users can get a domain name?
I have a basic setup user web space and ftp and mysql setup
what extra would I have to install or not to be able to get a domain pointed to my server and/or user accounts?
I don't seem to be able to find anything specific on how to set this up anywhere.
set no bouncemail set postmaster postmaster@dot.com.gh set logfile /var/log/fetchmail poll pop.teledataict.com protocol pop3 localdomains dot.com.gh archive dot.com.gh no dns
envelope X-Envelope-To: qvirtual dot.com.gh user "maildot3@teledataict.com" there pass "mail" is * here forcecr nokeep flush dropdelivered fetchall
This works perfectly as I want. But right now, what I want is, I want fetchmail to download mails for more than one or several accounts in different domains and different pop servers. How can I improve this rc file to accomplish my task?
I am kind of new to servers and need to set up a server in the lab (for 4-5 clients). I heard ubuntu has a different server edition. But I already have ubuntu desktop edition so I was wondering if I really have to install a server edition for my limited functionality. If it is not required to install a full blown server and I can do with the one I have, how do I go about creating accounts for remote login?
I'm using postfix with unix accounts for a while now and I just realized today that SASL authentication, instead of working only with the USERNAME, it also works if the username is followed by ANYDOMAIN.COM
So, let's say I have the following UNIX users: tim, mike, john. If I set the Outgoing Username:[URL]..(where whatever.com can be any name you can think of) IT WORKS, even though it shouldn't, it should only work with tim, mike and john without any domain name. Does anyone know what might cause this and what's the workaround to this problem?
I work at a small animation studio with a server box running Cent OS. We have no IT guy... I happen to know a little bit of programming so I got assigned to look after this server box. I'm still in the process of learning basic linux using VMware at home at themoment. There are few things requested from me that are really beyond my knowledge at this time and I really need some advise or pointer to get started.Current set up- We have 2 servers. A windows server 2008 and a Cent OS. They don't work together... They are only acting like a central "hard drives" so to speak.
- Cent OS was a new addition to our team. It was recently requested by our client. They set up RSync for us to get files from over sea and they want our file structure to match theirs.- We have 15 work stations. Not set as domain yet. We boot into Windows 7 for projects stored on windows server, and boot into Fedora for projects stored on Cent OS.What I was asked to do- Centralize user accounts. My boss wants both windows and fedora to log in using the same account. What would be the best approach to do this? We want the accounts to be managed via the Cent OS box. Permission to access hard drives on the server should be controlled as well.- Maximize Rsync. This one is really beyond my knowledge. The Rsync process from our clients sometimes doesn't go through. They want to make sure the process works as smooth as possible.
I am using ubuntu10.04-server 64bit AMD with fluxbox. After I ran Matlab in a shell (without GUI) the shell does not display characters anymore, but will execute any command, I just can't see the characters that I'm typing.. I use aterm and xterm, does anybody know why that is, am I missing a package?
I googled a lot but I didn't find anything about this. I have multiple accounts on the same ftp server (the server is not mine I don't access its configuration)
If I write ftp://hostname on the location bar it lets me login, but only allow me to be in only one account at a time. Putting ftp://hostname on the location again just opens the account I logged into and I'm unable to login to the other account to move files between them conveniently.
Is it possible to log into multiple accounts on the same server?
at the moment we're running an isc dhcpd with about 300 clients to serve. Because of inconsequent maintaining i think we have about over 50 dead static client entries in our dhcpd.conf. So we want to change our construct. Our aim is to allow a mac on the dhcp server to get an ip address. If this mac hasn't registered an ip address from the dhcp server for a time more than 90 days, the host entry gets disabled or deleted automatically. I'm searching for such kind of dhcp server configuration for many days. Have you any idea if there is a possibility to implement such a configuration?

How do I add an account so I can access my mailbox from M$ Outlook from a Windows 7 machine?I am planning on using my ISPs smtp server for sending mail.Or is there anything else I should be aware of?http://www7.pic-upload.de/21.04.11/ieg6wv3qx6g.jpg
We have 4 servers having rhel 5.2. We have several users logged in on one of them. We have nis server/client running on them and have common home area mounted on all of them. Now we want to disable/block the accounts of the users who have not accessed our servers in last 2 months from today. What logic should we apply to do so? We were checking stat of .bashrc of each user but is not correct logic. We are going to write shell script for the same. We dont want to do anything in users home area or their files.
I need to grant windows client an access to fileserver. The easiest way to do it is how? Setting up VPN server on Windows server, what rules are going into iptables in linux machine then. Or setting up VPN server on Linux machine (which is the best option) and how the user gets to fileserver?
I have a need to set up the program TNG - The Next Generation of Genealogy Sitebuilding and run it on a local server (not on the Internet) for the purpose of learning the system prior to developing it on an actual website. I was told to use http://localhost on my browser (Mozilla Firefox). I get a message saying "That Works!", but it goes on to say that the contents of the web server have not yet been entered. The instructions for the downloaded files (which I unzipped) said to copy to the web root folder (the folder where the web server is located ?, I guess). But I don't know where it is or how to go about it. Can someone help? I already have MySQL and PHP, which are required to run this program, and I also have Apache installed on my Kubuntu 9.10 system.
I have been having trouble figuring this out. I have a machine running CentOS 5 and I want to setup an SMTP server behind a router on a home broadband connection. I've read many guides but nothing too specific as to what I need to do. I want to use either sendmail or postfix, but I don't know if I should purchase an SMTP relay. If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be great. I also have bought a domain name that I want to use, but I just cant put all these pieces together as of right now.
I have successfully setup Apache,MySql,ftp, and a few other various packages. My question today is setting up an email server.I have past experience with sendmail, and procmail. However only on already installed, configured and working servers.I am trying to setup an email server from scratch.I have Centos 5.4 installed.
Are those two packages the only ones I need to get a working email server setup? Also I have been trying to configure a procmailrc file for my server under /etc/, but I can't seem to find consistent documentation on how to set up a procmailrc file.I believe my iptables is set to block port 110 and 25 from outside connections. how to open those ports too.
