Server :: Compiling Rsyslog 4.x Or 5.x On Redhat 5.5?

We want to begin centralizing our system logs to a dedicated server, using a daemon that is flexible and offers more features. After some research, I decided to give rsyslog a whirl (versus syslog-ng).roblem has come down to compilation errors which, unfortunately, I've not been able to resolve otherwise (rsyslog forums) and it appears this is a larger problem with the product. So before I begin making another decision, I wanted to get some input from others here.Here is a snippet of the errors:

I am trying to install rsyslog 5.4.0 with relp on CentOS 5.5 (vmware). My installation steps:

/usr/local/lib/rsyslog/omrelp.so exists with permission 755 owned by root. I read some similar posts but older version of centos, rsyslog, librelp and rebuilding the packages could not help.

I'm trying to compile top-3.6.1 form pkgsrc on RH5.6 using bmake and I'm getting the following error message.

I was wondering how could I specify for how long the logs will be kept. Rsyslog doesn't have such an option (at least I didn't find it).Do I have to use logrotate for this, or is there some other option?

After struggling and googling on the internet I can't manage it to work.I have stup rsyslog to receive the logging from my firewall and it puts it into the syslog file.ut I would like to have a separate logfile for these messages.I have created the firwall.log file with owner syslog, same as for the syslog file.I already have tried to use in the /etc/rsyslog.d/10-firewall.conf the following ::msg, contains, "firewalld" /var/log/firewall.logor
:msg, contains, "firewalld" -/var/log/firewall.logI don't know the difference between the "-" sign in the lines but I have seen also those kind of situations.
I also have put this line into the 50-default.conf file because I thought it wasn't seeing the 10-firewall.conf file but no work.I have added a $template HostMessages, "/var/log/%HOSTNAME%/logfile.log" in the /etc/rsyslog.conf file but neither it works.In the firewall I can see the Syslog facility is now on LOG_LOCAL0 and I can change it from LOCAL0, LOCAL1, LOCAL2, ... until LOCAL7What does these different numbers mean

I use my university's computers a lot, and I like being able to bring my data with me. They use RedHat 5 32-bit. I use windows a lot, so my passwords are stored in KeePass. There's a *nix version called keepassx that I would like to be able to run on those computers. I can't get anything from repos on there. But to compile it, I need the qt library, which isn't on those computers and I can't put it on there.
So, I need to be able to compile it on my Ubuntu machine so that it can run on the RedHat.Or maybe a completely different solution would work?

Right now i have a HP DL 180 Server with 130 Gb Hard Disk & 8 Gb ram after Raiding0+1. i want to configure Domain Controller Server for my office for 200 to 300 Users. what should the partition size must be mentioned in my 130 Gb Hard Disk, is that going to be Sufficient for ME ?
i am bit confused about /Usr /Var /Boot partitions, as i need to manage perfectly in 130 GB
if i go with 4 Gb swap and remaining for " / " is that will be fine ? should i need to specify partition sizes separately for / tmp /var / usr ..

I'm trying to rsync files and directories from a RedHat linux host(v 4.5 & 4.7) to a Windows server 2003R2 Standard Edition with cygwin running. I'm executing the rsync command from the cygwin shell. The transfer involves rsync'ing approximately 1 TB of data from the linux server to the windows server. After about 280+GB of data transfer, the transfer just dies.
There seems to be no particular file or directory that the transfer stops at. I'm able to rsync GB's of data from other linux hosts to this cygwin server with no problem. Files and directories rsync fine.The network infrastructure is essentially the same regardless of the server being rsync'ed in that it is GB Ethernet running through Cisco GB switches. There appear to be no glitches or hiccups across the network path.
I've asked the folks at rsync.samba.org if they know of any problems or issues. Their response has been neutral in that if the version of rsync that cygwin has ported is within standards then there is no rsync reason this problem should happen.I've asked the cygwin support site if they know of any issues and they have yet to reply. So, my question is whether the version of rsync that is ported to cygwin is standard. If so, is there any reason cygwin & rsync keep failing like this?
I've asked the local rsync on linux guru's and they can't see any reason this should fail from a linux perspective. Apparently I am our company cygwin knowledge base by default.

I have been able to find enough information that I need to enable 'time-udp' in /etc/xinetd.d/ But there isn't an entry for time-udp. How do I enable time-udp (Time of Day server) on a Red Hat system? It's RHEL 5.6 64bit.

I wanted to know how can I cross compile SMS SERVER TOOL for an embedded computer and make just one binary file for it or how can I change all of its default files places like its demon and object file and gather all of them to one directory to execute and use and run.let me explain it better for you : I have an embedded computer with Linux OS that its file system is read only and I can not add any file to /usr /lib and ..... and I can just mount a SD memory card to it and copy all of my programs to it and run them from there as you understand I have two choices to choose, first make one big binary file for each program that I am doing it now and it is not a suitable solution and the second is finding the way to change default place of shared object file of my program.now you tell me what can I do to solving this problem.

I have upgraded to 10.04 or tried to at least. I have a server at OVH and it was running 8.04 desktop and I decided to upgrade it to 10.04 little relizing that OVHs kernels didn't work with 10.04 so after the reboot phase it ended up going into a netboot rescue mode.
I have got the latest kernel from the kernal.ubuntu area and installed it. Run grub-update, reboot... Nothing. So I decided to run apt-get install just to make sure there was nothing that needed to be installed.

I had Windows XP working. I then put in a new hard disk and installed Redhat 5 on it. rom then i could only boot into Redhat. Further, everyting is very slow. Anothe rproblem is that Redhat does not see my netwrok so I cannot get onto the Internet. I need to have the choice of booting into XP or Redhat.

I'm having issues setting up rsyslog to receive syslog from another server and only log to one file. I'm receiving the syslog from the remote side, however its putting the entries into more than one log file.
I configured /etc/rsyslog.conf to enable udp, and I have implemented a filter to log only from that IP address, and then stop processing more rules, but it seems to continue on.
I have found that the remote syslog events are using local0 and local1. There are two custom rsyslog config files in /etc/rsyslog.d that handle those two facilities. If I use that same if statement at the beginning of those custom config files, I can get it to work. Seems like a hack though.
Not working:
I put my if statement before the include statement, thinking I could stop it from hitting the custom rules.

My Redhat 5 Linux system is "SLOW". . . .My system is 250 GB hard disk, 4 GB RAM and Xeon Processor.Its really getting late to start all the services in the boot it self....Then it takes more than 5 mins to get my Username and Passwd screen....After i entered in to GNU mode its getting even more slower. . .it takes minimum 5 minutes to enter in to OpenTerminal. . .
