View 3 RepliesI'm trying to rsync files and directories from a RedHat linux host(v 4.5 & 4.7) to a Windows server 2003R2 Standard Edition with cygwin running. I'm executing the rsync command from the cygwin shell. The transfer involves rsync'ing approximately 1 TB of data from the linux server to the windows server. After about 280+GB of data transfer, the transfer just dies.
There seems to be no particular file or directory that the transfer stops at. I'm able to rsync GB's of data from other linux hosts to this cygwin server with no problem. Files and directories rsync fine. The network infrastructure is essentially the same regardless of the server being rsync'ed in that it is GB Ethernet running through Cisco GB switches. There appear to be no glitches or hiccups across the network path.
I've asked the folks at rsync.samba.org if they know of any problems or issues. Their response has been neutral in that if the version of rsync that cygwin has ported is within standards then there is no rsync reason this problem should happen.I've asked the cygwin support site if they know of any issues and they have yet to reply. So, my question is whether the version of rsync that is ported to cygwin is standard. If so, is there any reason cygwin & rsync keep failing like this?
I've asked the local rsync on linux guru's and they can't see any reason this should fail from a linux perspective. Apparently I am our company cygwin knowledge base by default.
How do you tell a shell script to search for the directory within another directory (in this case /lib/modules) whose characters in its name (in this case numbers) are highest? I want to be able to tell mkinitramfs in a script to be able to see the highest possible kernel version in the /lib/modules directory.

View 14 Replies View RelatedAfter what feels like weeks have tinkering around trying to get a Samba file server set up, I've finally given up! I have 4 drives and 2 groups:
1) Dev - Available to all users in both groups (normal and admin)
2) Misc - Available to users in admin group only
3) Admin - Available to users in admin group only
4) Accounts - Available to users in admin group only
Drives 1 and 2 are working fine, with the correct access rights. Drives 3 and 4 can be browsed by admins only, but no changes can be made at all - files & directories can't be renamed/moved/deleted. What is most confusing is that Drive 2 is set up exactly the same as Drives 3 and 4. The process I went through to get them working:

I am writing a script, in that my requirement is, if all the fill types stored in one directory from that we need to separate different different directories based on the file types.
for example in a directory(anish). 5 different types files
1- directory
2- .txt files
2- .sh files
like that and my requirement is the (1- directory is moved to one new directory(dir) which we are given in the script)and (2 .txt files are moved to another new directory(test) which we are given in the script)and ( 2 .sh files are moved to another new directory(bash) which we are given in the scrip)finally the directory anish should be empty..using bash script.how it is possible !!
How can you create a script to move or copy files from a main directory into multiple directories below the main directory.

I want to copy all directories, files, and hidden files and hidden directories with one command. I want these items to replace any same items in the target directory.
I have tried several things, such as:
cp -r *
cp -aR *
but I only seem to get visible files and directories. Obviously, I am missing something. (A brain, probably....)
how do i delete any single one of the files in my whole disk that say something along the lines to "chromium os"? i.m just wondering because i tried to install through virtual box and failed, and probably have three different partitions consisting of nothing.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI hope you can help. I have a collection of spreadsheets with data that needs to be imported in to SQL. The data has been manually entered although there are portions where data has been copied and pasted from the web.
When converting these sheets to a CSV I get strange characters where it looks as though data has been copied and pasted. Is it possible to write a script (AWK?) to pull out these characters?
I guess the script will need to keep alpha characters, spaces, numerics and commas but nothing else. How easy is this to do?
I have a bunch of files that I need to rename, ordinarily this is pretty easy task. The problem here is that the file names have Chinese / Japanese characters. ie [$$$$$$$$].SOMETHING BLAH BLAH.ext Where all the "$$$$" are insert Chinese characters. The problem is that sed or perl doesn't seem to handle the Chinese characters correctly so using a regular expression like this 's/^[*.]//' which would normally work doesn't. From what I have read so far I believe these characters are double encoded UTF-8 (not 100% sure) which could be the problem. So far I've tried numerous different regex's as well as playing around with convmv to see if I could convert the filenames to just single encoded characters but I've had no luck.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI see 10.10 manages languages like 10.04.
I am English but live in Greece and although "I get by" with Greek, I do not read it very well and certainly do not write it. Consequently, I need to have everything on my PC in English. No problem so far but I do need to enable writing in Greek on occasion as the missus and bairns are Greek and my favourite little translator, GWord, obviously needs it.
I installed Greek language support and this resulted in everything being in Greek and me having to talk the missus through getting it back in English (she has trouble with technical stuff, bless her).
Just enabling translation and/or fonts etc in Language Support has no effect whatsoever.
I just want to press Alt+Shift and type in Greek, Alt+Shift again to be back in English and see my GWord (running under Wine) displaying no gobbledegook!
I have a directory (Linux user) with a number of files which contain an added [!] to the end of each file name so that each file reads out as:
foo something [!].zip
bar something [!].zip
helloworld [!].zip
etc.
What is the quickest way to batch rename these to remove the ending [!] character combination from these file names?
I have a folder with various subfolders of files. These files all have two extra characters on the end that I want to get rid of. How would I go about telling the terminal to go into X directory and every subdirectory of X directory, look for all files with the extra characters, remove them, and keep everything else the same?
View 3 Replies View RelatedOn my Ubuntu box, I have a mounted windows share connected via gvfs called graphics. I want to backup everything on a nightly basis from graphics to backupserver/graphics . If I use rsync, it will not copy files that have parent directories with funky characters in them (but the directories themselves will be copied!). Everything else gets rysnced just fine.
graphics/test/macdir/picture.psd
...when rsynced over to ...
backupserver/graphics/
gives the error:
rsync: mkstemp "/home/administrator/.gvfs/drobo on x.x.x.x/linux_backups/graphics/test/ macdir/.picture.psd" failed: Operation not supported (95)
The directory macdir gets created but there is nothing in there. This happens for all files underneath dirs with funky names. cp -Rf works perfectly! Directory and child files all get copied over no matter how strange the characters get in the directory names.
What command could I use in terminal to delete all ASCII characters? That is, delete a-z, A-Z, 0-9, and all punctuation? I have a file containing Chinese characters, and I want to remove everything else and leave just the Chinese.
I can use grep to leave only the lines that have Chinese in them, but this still leaves a lot of non-Chinese stuff on those lines. Does anyone know how I could actually remove everything that isn't Chinese?
I have the greek XI character (the 3 bars) in a title in an html file as;<h1>ΞJSFΞ</h1> but when saved by gedit and pulled up in firefox it shows;ΞJSFΞ.Could you offer suggestions as to how to fix this please.I think this is a firefox or Ubuntu problem rather than gedit because when I go into vim it shows ΞJSFΞ.

Is there any way to make all non-latin characters to use a font different than the one the latin characters use?
How do I delete just directories and not files when performing a "rm -r foo*" command? E.G. I have foobar.txt foofoo.o foorebar.jpg and foo/ foonuggets/ and footemp/ in a directory. In one fell swoop how do I delete just the directories and preserve the files?
Seeing as how I only use the -r switch when removing directories I accidentally ran this command and removed files that I wanted (luckily nothing vital). Lesson learned now I want to prevent ever doing that on files that *are* vital.
I have about 300 files that need renaming, because the file system does not display the French characters properly. The dodgy letter in question has been replaced by a "question mark in a black diamond" symbol. No way of renaming, other then using mv in the Konsole has worked. Is there any way, script or program out there, that will do a batch rename?

While modifying the definition of my PS1, I saw that "[" and "]" markers should be added to help bash to compute the right display lenght. Many exemples on the web do not use them or even mention them.I searched for a solution to add them automatically, like with sed, but I didn't find any example. Are they still needed and is there a recommandation not to use sed to define PS1?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've been wondering about this for a long time but never thought to ask: I do a lot of scientific work so there are many times it would be really handy to be able to type mathematical symbols or Greek letters which, for the most part, aren't part of the ASCII character set. Like "∞ ρ σ τ ω ∑ ... √ ∫ ≤ ≥ " and so on. Is there a keyboard layout (for Linux) that maps simple key combinations to these kinds of characters? (Assuming all the encoding and font issues are worked out properly) I know I could create one myself but it'd be a lot easier if someone's already done the work, or at least if there's a partial solution I could modify.
