Ubuntu :: Greek Language Support

Oct 10, 2010

I see 10.10 manages languages like 10.04.

I am English but live in Greece and although "I get by" with Greek, I do not read it very well and certainly do not write it. Consequently, I need to have everything on my PC in English. No problem so far but I do need to enable writing in Greek on occasion as the missus and bairns are Greek and my favourite little translator, GWord, obviously needs it.

I installed Greek language support and this resulted in everything being in Greek and me having to talk the missus through getting it back in English (she has trouble with technical stuff, bless her).

Just enabling translation and/or fonts etc in Language Support has no effect whatsoever.

I just want to press Alt+Shift and type in Greek, Alt+Shift again to be back in English and see my GWord (running under Wine) displaying no gobbledegook!

General :: Keyboard Layout For Mathematical / Greek Symbols?

May 12, 2010

I've been wondering about this for a long time but never thought to ask: I do a lot of scientific work so there are many times it would be really handy to be able to type mathematical symbols or Greek letters which, for the most part, aren't part of the ASCII character set. Like "∞ ρ σ τ ω ∑ ... √ ∫ ≤ ≥ " and so on. Is there a keyboard layout (for Linux) that maps simple key combinations to these kinds of characters? (Assuming all the encoding and font issues are worked out properly) I know I could create one myself but it'd be a lot easier if someone's already done the work, or at least if there's a partial solution I could modify.

Fedora :: Mounting Windows Server08 From Fedora 8 With Read/write Permissions?

Oct 7, 2009

I have Fedora 8 and we just switched over from a Windows "File Server" to Windows Server 2008 (10.1.1.17). I updated my fstab file and now when I go onto the Windows folders, I can list and read files, even save them, but new files are always read only.

fstab file (some, without the asterisks):
//10.1.1.17/USERS/Jeff/fs /home/mriuser/Desktop/fs cifs rw,username=jsadino,password=**** 0 0

I've tried ntfs-3g, auto, ntfs, smb, some umask combinations, changing ownerships, changing permissions, everything I could think of, but still can't modify new files.

[root@localhost tmp10]# mkdir tmp2
[root@localhost tmp10]# cd tmp2
[root@localhost tmp2]# touch tmp
[root@localhost tmp2]# ls -l

The file I have downloaded to my Windows 7 Ultimate drive is named Fedora-14-i386-DVD.torrent on the above page. It is 3.4 Gb DVD iso. I am trying to write it to a DVD (brand new and not damaged at all) but for some reason it does not get written. I am using the in-built DVD burning facility in Windows 7 ultimated OS. I assume that once the iso is written to a DVD it extracts many files to DVD, right?

Fedora :: Read & Write Share With NFS In 13

I can't see any option for recursive directories in nfs in fedora 13.

This is my set-up:

Code:

Code:

save and exit.

Code:

When i mount the directory /media/Data from another Fedora 13 box i don't have read and write permissions for each and every file. The -R recursive option would be handy unfortunately this option is unavailable. The red hat docs have not been helpful in this respect.

Code:

Code:

The mounted partition is of the ext3 type. With the nfs-3g type i don't have any issue however most of my directories/partitions are of the ext3 type so i need get it sorted.

I changed my user name id number to the same number on all boxes thus giving me write access. There must be a better solution than this.

Fedora :: Write Custom Genre To MP3?

Jul 12, 2011

I'm currently switching from Mac OS X to Linux (Fedora 15). I've now moved my music library (about 40 GB), mostly in AAC (*.m4a) format. Since I didn't find a way to adjust the volume of these files using MP3Gain (although I read that it should work with AACs, it didn't), I've decided to just convert all files to MP3 using faad and lame. So far so good. (BTW: I've already converted them, so I don't need any help with AAC/MP3Gain...)

The problem: Lame ereases all the tags. I found a way to preserve at least the most important tags (title, artist, album, track number and year) using exiftool to extract them from the AAC files and id3tag to write them to the new MP3 files.. I'm loosing the album artist, but I have not many compilations, so that's not a real problem.

The real problem are the genre tags. My songs are all carefully tagged with custom genres, and I didn't find any way to write custom genres to MP3 files, only the predefined ones. So I just copied the genres into the comment tag to at least preserve them because I wanted to start the conversion process (which takes really, really long on my 3 years old MacBook).

Does anyone know a way to copy the custom genre from the comment tag (it's the only entry) to the genre tag? A way to write it to the MP3 is enogh, I already know how to copy it from the comment tag. The writing is my problem.

Red Hat / Fedora :: How To Get Unlimited Read/write?

Oct 25, 2010

I installed SAMBA and SWAT, latest versions. What I want to accomplish is to give Windows users unlimited read/write access to the entire filesystem, eg. (/). Barring that, I'd like to at least be able to configure full access to individual directories. And by "unlimited", I mean being able to edit and delete everything that would be normally accessible only by the root user. I want to grant the Windows users of the shares access as if they were root users.

Fedora Servers :: Cannot Write Into Html Folder

I have changed their html directories to 777. However, it appears to be read-only since I cannot create files or folders within it. Can anyone please give me some ideas as to what may be causing this? Probably some extra configurations I may have overlooked? Any help would be kindly appreciated. I also created a general wshare (writable share) directory for all users within home directory but I am encountering the same problem and cannot write to it.
