Ubuntu :: Polytonic (ancient) Greek Stopped Working?

Dec 23, 2010

I am ending my dissertation and suddenly the Polytonic Greek stopped working on my ubuntu 10.04! This means that all different accents and accent combinations are disabled. I found in the archives an old thread on this topic from 2007, [URL].

Debian :: Uuid Not Working On Ancient Laptop?

May 16, 2011

System Fossil age laptop, Debian testing with lilo. SymptomAfter an upgrade (2nd week May), custom kernel compiled, kernel panics on boot, saying unable to mount root drive. (or more precise, unable to mount whatever uuid device). Stock kernel can boot. Workaround Instead of uuid on kernel option, use prehistoric root=/dev/XXX.

edit:The kernel which panics is 2.6.38 (make oldconfig, all default answer from 2.5.32 config)Stock is 2.6.32 On 2.6.38 after boot with tweak, the command "uuid" looks good.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Suddenly Stopped Working AND Rfkill Command Not Working

Jul 13, 2011

When originally installing 11.04 I had problems getting my Ralink 5390 wireless card to work.

Today my computer froze completely and I had to turn it off via the power switch. When I turned it back on, wireless was no longer recognized! My iPod can connect to the network just fine, so it must be an Ubuntu problem. There are no problems with my ethernet connection either.

I researched this and found several threads about blocking and unblocking wireless devices using the rfkill command. Well, unfortunately for me the rfkill command doesn't work. When I type sudo rfkill list or sudo rfkill unblock all, nothing happens; it just returns me to my bash prompt. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling rfkill...nothing.

Ubuntu :: Greek Language Support

Oct 10, 2010

I see 10.10 manages languages like 10.04.

I am English but live in Greece and although "I get by" with Greek, I do not read it very well and certainly do not write it. Consequently, I need to have everything on my PC in English. No problem so far but I do need to enable writing in Greek on occasion as the missus and bairns are Greek and my favourite little translator, GWord, obviously needs it.

I installed Greek language support and this resulted in everything being in Greek and me having to talk the missus through getting it back in English (she has trouble with technical stuff, bless her).

Just enabling translation and/or fonts etc in Language Support has no effect whatsoever.

I just want to press Alt+Shift and type in Greek, Alt+Shift again to be back in English and see my GWord (running under Wine) displaying no gobbledegook!

Is there any way to make all non-latin characters to use a font different than the one the latin characters use?

Ubuntu :: Installations On Ancient Hard Drive

Mar 13, 2011

My brother must have the oldest computer ever, its got no option to boot via usb, when you boot with cd it boots up like a livecd usually would (gets to the Ubuntu screen with "Try Ubuntu without installing" and then "Install Ubuntu" (or the equivalent for other livecd's)) and then just goes into a black screen (which flashes - a sort of brightness high and brightness low) and keeps flashing until I turn it off. It has Ubuntu on it, but it's too slow since he has like 126mb ram. It was installed using the actual Ubuntu CD from the Ubuntu Store. Usb booting isn't allowed by bios and the computer wont install things via dvds.

I have tried:
Lubi
LiveCD's
grub chainloading USB
Installing xubuntu-desktop and then removing all ubuntu's stuff

General :: Keyboard Layout For Mathematical / Greek Symbols?

May 12, 2010

I've been wondering about this for a long time but never thought to ask: I do a lot of scientific work so there are many times it would be really handy to be able to type mathematical symbols or Greek letters which, for the most part, aren't part of the ASCII character set. Like "∞ ρ σ τ ω ∑ ... √ ∫ ≤ ≥ " and so on. Is there a keyboard layout (for Linux) that maps simple key combinations to these kinds of characters? (Assuming all the encoding and font issues are worked out properly) I know I could create one myself but it'd be a lot easier if someone's already done the work, or at least if there's a partial solution I could modify.

Ubuntu Installation :: Cannot Activate NVidia OEM Driver On Ancient PC

Feb 1, 2010

I've got an eight-year old PC that I'd like to breath some new life into. I was using it for my old scanner (HP, no longer supported by MS or HP), but when my Windows installation finally died I thought it was a perfect time to try Ubuntu. (Xsane running under Ubuntu does support that scanner.) I can get Ubuntu started on it, but when I try to activate/install the recommended Nvidia OEM driver, the system gets sick. Ordinarily I'd not worry about it, but the system only starts into low graphics mode, which leaves some dialogs too large for the display and partially unusable or worse. The PC is a cheap homebrew, using an A7N266-VM ASUS mb. It has some kind of Nvidia chipset on board, but no graphics accelerator.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Video Streaming On Ancient Hardware?

Jan 10, 2011

I've recently found a Dell Optiplex GX110 - about 10 years old with a Pentium III. I installed Ubuntu 10.04 no problems, and it behaves quite well, despite its age. However, if I try and stream video from web sites (....., bbc etc), the result is underwhelming - very jumpy images, although sound is fine. Interestingly, viewing video files through VLC does not have such an issue - it seems to be OK - it is just http streaming (typically Flash) where I observed the issue.I found an old graphics card - a ATI Radeon 7000 and installed it. However, I saw no improvement in streaming video performance. I was a little surprised, but would like to understand the reason - is it:the card is so low spec it would not make a difference, or is it that:the card *ought* to make a difference, but is not configured and/or performing correctlyNote that Ubuntu appears to correctly find the card - lspci shows it correctly identified.

Ubuntu :: DTA Has Stopped Working?

May 14, 2010

resubscribed to Rapidshare and in the past could easily download my friend's discussion papers using the file manager called DTA that integrates into Firefox. I have taken out a new subscription to RS and instead of getting the files I am receiving small html referer files. In theory this should be corrected by ticking a direct download setting on RS, but it is making no difference. I can manually download the files so I am certain the files are on RS in full form. I am also successfully auto logging into RS and this means the name and password are being handed over correctly

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Stopped Working In 9.10?

Aug 23, 2010

I got a call from a friend who did the distrubution upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 and all was well for about 2 weeks and then his desktop icons disappeared. He kept running it that way and never looked for help until a couple of days ago he tried to plug in a card reader to get some pictures from his camera and nothing happened. that was when he discovered that he couldn't run Nautilus at all. I had him purge nautilus and reinstall it but then he couldn't even log in to Ubuntu. Very strange indeed. Anyone else experience this? After going over all the settings and finding them what they should be, I just installed 10.04 and all is well except that he lost a few photos.

Ubuntu :: Touchpad Stopped Working 10.10?

Nov 25, 2010

I have been using Ubuntu 10.10 for about a week now, I have had many, many problems, but usually figure them out by searching through this forum, except this time:I have an HP touchsmart tx2 1025dx laptop. When I installed it, everything worked great, sound, mouse, and even the touchscreen. Right now I noticed that when I press the button on by laptop which toggles the touchpad, it works but after it would freeze the menus, so that they would not drop down, I have confirmed this after many restarts. Now the touchpad has stopped working completely. Although if use the toggle button, it will still freeze by menus. It also somehow stops my keyboard from typing things into programs, like firefox, but still somehow the control-alt delete still lets me restart it.

My question is how can I reset the mouse settings/preferances to how they were when I installed? I found something a while back that was xorgconfig??? but it has since been taken out of ubuntu 10.10 (I read this somewhere, please correct me if I'm wrong.) I hope this is enough information for someone to point me in the right direction.Recap:Laptop Touchpad not workingWhen I press the toggle Touchpad button, messes up the menusUsing HP Touchsmart Tx2 1025dx LaptopLooking for a way to reset/restore sound preferences/settings or enable touchpad/ps: I was able to come here because the touchscreen is still working I ended up doing this:rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacitywhich reset ALL of my settings back to when I installed it, without deleting my programs or files.I found this here: http://linuxfud.wordpress.com/2007/0...re-installing/
