Software :: Configurable File Maintenance Programs / Scripts (Logrotate)
Mar 27, 2011Before I start writing my own file maintenance script, maybe one such program/scripts already exist somewhere. Am looking for a file maintenance script/application that is configurable that I can use to process files under certain criteria, for example, removing files that are x-number of days old, gzip'ping files if they are core dumped files, removing files if they are zero-sized files etc. Am not sure logrotate is the solution that am looking for.

May 4, 2010I notice when Linux boots in maintenance mode the filesystem is read-only.
Is there a way to change this, perhaps remounting as writable?
An example of this being a problem is that I was unable to open vi because there were too many session files....
Not to mention it would be nice to actually fix problems....
What are you meant to be able to do if you can't make any changes to the filesystem? What kind of maintenance can be expected?

Jun 10, 2011Tried it with Wubi for a few days and now I can happily say that I'm on a single boot system with Ubuntu 11.04 taking up all my hard drive. I say I think I've upgraded from Windows 7 as I have a few windows programs that I need to install (looked at wine and the progs I have are compatible - what does this mean in terms of installing them? One program for example is FlexiSign. I will search but is there an easy way to install windows programs?)

Nov 26, 20101) Any process (including boot, shutdown, download, open programs, etc) is freeze (don't have any progress) until I move the mouse or hit any button, so for install and use my ubuntu I have to keep moving my mouse and as you imagine is VERY TIRED.2) I get some general freeze on random times, neither the mouse, keyboard or process move, I notice that if I unplug power it unfreze, and I can work for some time.This 2 problems annoy me a lot, and I suspect is a problem related to my Netbook Model, I read about someone that has the same problem but no solution there.
This is what I did:I Try Ubuntu loading from my USB memory (1GB), run very good but with the 2 problems, but I thought it can be resolved installing.I installed along side with W7, couldn't boot Ubuntu, so I configured GRUB2 and it could enter now, but if I don't press **** after selecting Ubuntu it give me the BusyBox, and then the same 2 problems.I get rid of my W7 and did a Full Install on my 160GB HDD, hoping it can work fine, but no.I install all updates and no effect on that.
Fedora :: Hard Disk Failure Throws To "maintenance Terminal"
Oct 12, 2010I had a hard disk used entirely for data archiving (no os files in there!) and it just failed, so I opened up the PC case and removed it. The problem is that I had set it to be automounted on startup (specified in /etc/fstab), and now when Fedora is loading it outputs an fsck error "cannot find/locate a superblock in /dev/sdb1" (that is the removed drive) and it throws me to a "maintenance terminal". I tried to remove the /dev/sdb1 entry from /etc/fstab, but the system wouldn't let me save the new file because the filesystem was in read-only mode.

May 11, 2009I'm facing this problem since a month on Fedora 10. I have some 45 packages for upgrade through KPackageKit which belong to KDE.
While I give it to upgrade, it gives me a strange message which says
Multiple packages exist that are not compatible with each other.
This is usually due to mixing packages from different software sources.
When I press the details button, I get these details.

I get this message only for the KDE packages. I have libkwalletbackend.so.4 in my /usr/lib directory.

Mar 24, 2010I have a Dell PowerEdge 840 that has no sound card. I would like to install a completely compatible sound card. I have not been able to find any recommendations for compatible sound cards on these forums, but I have learned that the C-Media chipset is supposed to be well-supported by Linux. There are C-Media sound cards on e-bay for under $10. I was considering a 6ch c-media 5.1 surround sound 3D PCI sound card. I believe the chipset is CM8738. Does anyone know whether this card is supported in F12? Or does anyone care to share any recommendations for sound cards that are known to be compatible with Fedora 12?
My intention is to be able to install a decent, inexpensive, commodity sound card that is known to be compatible with Fedora 12. I would prefer to purchase and install one that I know works rather than guessing and then fiddling with it forever and asking a lot of questions that could have been avoided.
Surprisingly, this information has been very hard for me to find. I understand that there is no Fedora hardware compatibility list, but it seems that a very brief list of hardware that is know to be compatible with the most recent release or two of Fedora could save a lot of time and resources. The purpose of such a brief list wouldn't necessarily be to see if a certain piece of hardware is compatible, but to find a component that is know to be compatible, so as to easily be able to get a completely functional system up and running.
