Fedora Security :: Unusual Warning Message Asking For Password?

Apr 9, 2011

Sometimes when I try to open some chat application i get a strange warning message asking for password. The message is that /usr/libexec/mission-control is trying to gain access of the system, please provide the password. On top of the message box it shows "Unlock Keyring".

This very weird, as I am also unable to do a print-screen when this message box is up.

what this message is all about and what does the executable /usr/libexec/mission-control do?

I am using Empathy as my chat application

Ubuntu Security :: Unusual Folder Appearance Under Places?

Aug 10, 2010

I'm not sure this is the correct place for this post, but since it involves a keyring, I'm making my best guess. Feel free to move it if I am in error. I have had a "tmp" directory appear under Places in the first grouping which contains "Home", "Deaktop", "Documents", etc. When I open this folder I find the attached png file.

When I look for this folder I find it is owned by root, but it appears in what should be my home directories. The only guess I have as to it's origin is that I recently formatted a USB stick as an encrypted device. I don't know if that is when it appeared or not.

Can anyone shed any light on what this folder is, and why it appears where it does? Somehow it just doesn't seem a correct placement.

Ubuntu Security :: Unusual Traffic From Amazon EC2 Cloud Server

May 1, 2011

Last night my old Sony Vaio laptop which connects via wired Ethernet and runs Ubuntu 10.10 started hammering the network out onto the Internet. Fired up Wireshark and found lots of traffic between my machine and 174.129.193.12 which I did a whois on and found belonged to Amazon EC2 Cloud Server. The port on my machine was an unknown 5000+ but the port on the remote system was 443 the port used by https, however no browser was running. Did a search and put together a couple of iptable commands to block this IP address which stopped the traffic. I then used nmap and netstat and found port 3000 open and another connection to IP address 91.189.89.76 which I also blocked. Unusually no info exists on this IP when you do a whois. At first I thought it might be some sort of sync as this machine has Ubuntu One running on it, however it could also be something else.

Security :: Unusual Directories Appear On One Of Mounted Arrays - "samba_symlink_dir_traversal_nasl-#"

Jul 27, 2010

I recently started having unusual directories appear on one of my mounted arrays. I did not create them (intentionally) and I have no clue what they are. They all have the this in the name of the folder "samba_symlink_dir_traversal.nasl-<10-digit number>" they all have the same time-stamp for the date modified column (see pic).

What are these folders? Why are they appearing? And how can I make it stop? It doesn't do this on my other mounted arrays and disks. I recently grew my two attached arrays, this started right after that, but only on one of them. Connection? Also, it may be relevant, the folders are different today in their modified date(reflecting today's date) and the numbers in the name of the folder are different too.

Debian Multimedia :: Unusual Video Display Using X?

Sep 29, 2010

I've been dual booting Lenny and Squeeze but after replacing Lenny with a fresh Squeeze using ext4, the video display has been strange. The effect is similar to running a live CD, where a click does nothing for a few seconds while the CD winds up and gets to the application, but slower than that. Sometimes the display has patches of several windows all mixed up, zig zag patterns like a TV that is too far from a transmitter to receive a good signal and sometimes the mouse freezes in moving around. When I boot and don't start X, everything works perfectly, no delays, no messed up windows.

My video is ATI x1300 with Radeon driver. What is the best way to get the system to use only vesa, to see if that works, instead of ati or radeon? is possible to use grub.cfg or /etc/defaults/grub or /etc/grub.d/ ? I couldn't find any reports of problems with Xorg used by Squeeze, so it seems to be the ATi driver or the radeon driver.

OpenSUSE Install :: Unusual Warnings On Kernel Desktop 2.6.31.12

Finally got around to updating from 2.6.31.8 and was surprised at the slew of warnings issued during the install. Rather than post them here, see:
pastebin - Someone - post number 1792805
I would have bet money that the machine wouldn't boot after this, but it in fact did (whew). Since the kmp modules were not updated with this new kernel, I have merely suspicions....any one have the real reason for these warnings? Same type of warnings occured (thou I didn't copy the output) when I installed the ATI prop driver rpm. everything seems to work as normal so far, but it was so very different than many previous updates that I'm a bit leery.

Software :: Rsync Can't Copy Certain Files With Unusual Characters While Cp Can

Aug 20, 2010

On my Ubuntu box, I have a mounted windows share connected via gvfs called graphics. I want to backup everything on a nightly basis from graphics to backupserver/graphics . If I use rsync, it will not copy files that have parent directories with funky characters in them (but the directories themselves will be copied!). Everything else gets rysnced just fine.

graphics/test/macdir/picture.psd
...when rsynced over to ...
backupserver/graphics/

gives the error:

rsync: mkstemp "/home/administrator/.gvfs/drobo on x.x.x.x/linux_backups/graphics/test/ macdir/.picture.psd" failed: Operation not supported (95)

The directory macdir gets created but there is nothing in there. This happens for all files underneath dirs with funky names. cp -Rf works perfectly! Directory and child files all get copied over no matter how strange the characters get in the directory names.

Software :: "You Are Not Allowed To Connect" Messages In Maillog File?

Jun 9, 2011

I have been finding a lot of "You are Not allowed to connect" messages in my maillog file.

and the email addresses are not in my forum database. I've check my server for rootkits and there are none installed and I've also used mxtoolbox to test my server as an open relay and it says it's not an open relay. however I am seeing bounces that show 'relay' and I wonder exactly what I'm looking at and and asking for some help in identifying the nature of these emails. here's a few examples and they seem to come in 'spurts" when I'm tailing the maillog file. there's never anything waiting in the queue to be delivered.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unusual High Outgoing Traffic Generated

Aug 12, 2010

I've noticed recently that a lot of outgoing internet traffic is generated by my laptop (running Ubuntu 10.04 - 64 bit). This wasn't the case previously. I only found out because my wireless broadband traffic allowance suddenly was used up very quickly. I've installed ntop to try to find out where all this traffic is going to.

I did find that there were a very high number (at one stage over 11.000) of active TCP/UDP sessions (see attached screenshot). Although the traffic generated by each is only small (about 100 bits/bytes - not sure what) multiplied by thousands, makes a fair bit of traffic. I wonder if I've got some kind of a virus/bug or do I have a configuration problem with my laptop?

Debian Hardware :: Unusual System Failure - Hard Drive Bad Sector

Sep 11, 2015

It all started about a week after upgrading to Jessie and I had an unusual system failure, in that the CPU went to 100% usage and the hard drive light was on constantly. The keyboard and mouse were were non-responsive. Not having REISUB enabled I did the "stupid" thing and pushed the reset button on the computer. BAD BOY! As a result the computer would not boot and I had to use a live CD to format the drive and install Wheezy (I had the CD).

After installing Wheezy, everything worked well for about 3 days and then it did the same thing. Fortunately I had REISUB enabled and was able to reboot. I looked at the syslog and found a segfault with colord-sane and, after some research that suggested colord-sane might be a problem, I set UseSane=1 in colord.conf . Things seemed to be okay for about 4 days.

Well, after all that I had another problem today with booting. During boot I got an error message saying that there was some hard drive problem and that I needed to log in and run fsck, which I did . There were I believe 4 INODE errors that I was asked if I wanted to repair, to which I responded yes. After that the system booted correctly. After booting and entering the Gnome Classic desktop I looked at the Disk Utility and checked the SMART data. There is now 1 bad sector where before there were none. The drive is a one year old WD 500GB Velociraptor.

Don't know if this is relevant, but in the days before this latest "crash" I had downloaded about 8 movies using bittorrent. Could this have overtaxed the HDD?

I guess my questions are: When fsck "repaired" the disk would it have moved any data from the bad sector to a new location? What may have caused the sector to go bad ? Should I be buying a new hard drive?

The system seems to boot okay,at this time, so I assume that no critical system files were affected. Just curious as to how I should proceed. First is BACK UP my data. Got that !

One more thing I just thought of is that every time it "crashed", I was using LXDE.

Ubuntu :: Unusual Grub Minimal Bash-like Line Editing Is Supported?

Mar 21, 2011

Ubuntu didn't start up all of a sudden. It got error and stuck at : Minimal BASH-like line editing - Ubuntu Forums. I tried many ways suggested to go into menu mode but failed. I followed online solutions.. but none of them helped. I tried to list all partitions and I got this: ls

(memdisk), (hd0), (hd0,msdos), (fd0)
i tried
root (hd0)/boot , it said unknown filesystem
root (hd0,msdos)/boot, but it's a windows partition
root (f0)/boot, it said read error

The setup is dual boot with wubi, so i logged on to windows7 and installed partition magic, but i couldn't see the linux parittion, the whole harddisk is 500G, but only 2xxG is visible in NTFS. I used liveCD to boot the system, but when i run sudo fdisk -l, i didn't see anything. I have no idea why it happened, and the last successful log on was in Ubuntu, so i doubt it's due to windows update. I am going to try Solution #1 (10.04) in wubi megathread. Can anyone suggest what has actually gone wrong? WIll i able to recover the data in my linux parition given partition magic cannot see it?

and tried to boot the Win7 on that partition. NO LOADER came up and since that moment
Grub is only in "Minimal BASH-like line editing" mode. I have tried all of I have googled, nothing have worked. There is a problem with even finding /boot/grub/stage2, or anything else, grub won't let me mount any partition. When I try to find any file, it says file not found. It is important to say that all I did to cause this was change in menu.lst
rootnoverify (hd1,1) to rootnoverify (hd1,0)m nothing else! There is no logic in this....
