Feb 13, 2010I'm backing up my data asap. However, I am getting hundreds, maybe thousands of disk I/O errors when trying to run everyday programs, such as sqlite and firefox. Looking at dmesg, I see these items repeated many, many times:

Fedora :: KDE Panel Clock To Display In 12 Hour Not 24 Hour Format?
Mar 24, 2010I recently decided to try KDE4 and would like the change the clock on the panel to display 12 hour format and not the default 24hour format but i can not find where to change this option currently the clock looks like the attached picture. Gnome has this option and I would like to see it in KDE if it exists in the default clock. I am willing to replace the default KDE clock with a seperate widget if one exists for this.

Aug 5, 2010I need to change the time displayed in the task bar from a 24 hour clock to a 12 hour format. I could not find the relevant settings in OpenSuse 11.2 and same is the case for 11.3 as well.
how to make the change? I have tried System Settings ---> Computer Administration ---> Date & Time; but I was not able to make the desired change.
Similarly, I have a digital clock widget that shows GMT + 5.5 hours and I need to change that to 12 hour format as well.

Ubuntu :: Rename Hundreds Of .picasa.ini Files?
Sep 11, 2010In my photos folder, I have hundreds of folders, each with Picasa.ini files.
Unfortunately, a lot of these files are actually ".picasa.ini" files & Picasa 3.0 does not recognize them.
All I want to do is rename all those ".picasa.ini" files to "Picasa.ini".
If there was a GUI way to do this, all in one go, then that would be my prefered method.
I couldn't find one, so reluctantly tried Terminal. After a lot of reading & trying, still no success.
"locate .picasa.ini" finds all the files easily.
I tried many variants around: "rename -v -n 's/.picasa.ini$/Picasa.ini/' .picasa.ini" to run a simulation without screwing anything up yet, but at best they only seem to rename one occurence, not all the files.

Sep 12, 2011Whenever you write a program that prints its own process ID, I've always (without any exception) received numbers ranging in the tens of thousands. Never less, never higher. I was just wondering, why is are the process ID #s so high? Are the ones below it all system-related processes? And then when I run the program again, it prints out an ID that is several hundred above the previous execution... what happens between these two executions that come right after each other?

May 25, 2011Our client has a website (Joomla 1.5 based) to promote participation in and report results of a 10k race for runners in Scandinavia...
The race is scheduled for late June and will be covered by at least 5 still photographers at various points along the race course.
There are to be about 5,000 runners, each entered under a shirt number like bib_1000 through bib_5999, and this means there will be a significant number of digital jpg files submitted by the photographers...
The client has in place some software which will "automagically" resize, watermark, and rename the individual files in the form:
And so on with a possibility of as many as 10 or 12 images in the aggregate with the same alpha-numeric "shirt number" at the beginning of the filename.
Our presentation software does a great job of handling thumbnail image generation and displaying a slideshow in a lightbox of all files within a given folder on the webserver.
And now finally the question...
Given a folder containing 25,000 or so *.jpg files, how can we write a script that:
1. parses the filenames to unique "shirt numbers"
2. makes folders with each "shirt number" as the foldername
3. moves the files from the root of the original folder into the appropriate "shirt number" folder.
Note that the order of my list above is not important, and if you know of a better way to organize the task we are fine with that.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Scroll Through Hundreds Of Photos & Move Good Ones To A Separate Folder?
Nov 19, 2010I'm relatively new to Ubuntu and am just trying to get basic functionality without having to punt back to Windows applications on Wine (such as Irfanview).All I want to do is step through photos (by pressing a key, such as the space bar) to view & then press a keyclick to move the good ones to a separate folder.
This is so fundamental that I must assume there must be software in Ubuntu which can accomplish those two simple tasks (step through a folder and move a file to another folder). Yet, I have The Gimp, GNU Paint, Krita, KSnapshot, XFig, XPaint, etc., and none of them appear to have this basic functionality (which Irfanview has, but on Windows).
What program can view and easily MOVE the photo to a stated directory in a single keystroke? Note: All the programs can "open a file" and "save as" but this is NOT the desired fundamental operation. The fundamental operation is:
- Press a key (spacebar would be nice) to scroll to the next photo in a folder.
- Press another key combination ("control + m" would be nice) to move the photo to a stated folder
- The "index" should NOT be reset (that is, the next spacebar should show the next photograph in the folder, not jump back, perhaps hundreds of photos, to the first photo as The Gimp does, for example, after a save).
- It's ok to set the move-to folder the first time, but it should not ask each and every time which folder as it should be the default for the move command after the first move.
Note: I also tried making the icons in the Nautilus browser huge and then control-click selecting the good ones, but that makes ALL icons at all times huge, and the scroll in Nautilus is atrocious, so, in effect, that was a failure. I need a graphic program that performs this simple task. This is so fundamental of a need (to scroll through and move just the good photos to a stated folder) that I find it hard to believe I can't (yet) find a graphics display program capable of scrolling and moving photos.

Jul 13, 2011I have a syslog-ng running and kernel build of 2.6.34.8 I use a syslog API in my program with facility LOG_LOCAL5 and and levels debug err and crit and info. when I ran on the older syslog facility I had everything logged fine as I intended. now I have written these rules into the syslog-ng.conf:

the last two rules show my program gnssapp. the result is all debug levels or crit or err levels I don't see any of them !

Aug 11, 2010I am using ubuntu 10.04 on an iMac 7.1. What do the following log entries mean? I recently had a "sbin/init infected" alarm with chkrootkit (or rkhunter, I forget which) and reinstalled, and I thought I was rid of the problem, whatever it was (could have been a kernel panic), but now the checksecurity setuid stuff reappeared (the checksecurity.log only appears in the log file viewer after resetting it with gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/gnome-system-log, which seems suspicious; why is the log hidden by default?); also there are "outbound" messages that I don't understand. I have another ubuntu install on another Mac which seems to be unaffected (and also has checksecurity installed; I just ran it manually and also got setuid stuff, but there is no "outbound" and ufw.log is empty). I can't really think I have a rootkit (I don't notice any effects except these anomalous logfiles, and my browsing habits don't include sleazy websites). And what exactly are bound sockets? There is a lot of information about sockets on the net but it's all rather technical. I continue to look of course. I ran chkrootkit and rkhunter again, and they read clean (if I can trust them).
Is it possible that the trouble is related to the Mac's BIOS emulation? (Apple does not seem to take security very seriously; Snow Leopard does not even ask for a password for Software Update - I asked my premium reseller and he confirmed it. I should not be surprised to find out that the iMac's BIOS emulation is unsafe. I'll need to get a real computer). The MacBook Pro 5.1 has a newer firmware (for instance, it will boot ubuntu from external disks which the iMac will not), and as I said that install seems to be unaffected (The setuid stuff is probably normal, but I'm not sure the "outbound" messages are). I use grub legacy, which seems to install to the Mac's EFI partition as /dev/sda (GParted shows 18.1 MB of 200MB used on both computers with ubuntu on them, whereas an HFS+ disk without ubuntu, or with GRUB in a partition, will show 3.09 MB used).
Does it make sense to reconfigure checksecurity to check for setuid changes daily (change CHECK_WEEKLY="SETUID" in /etc/checksecurity.conf to CHECK_DAILY="SETUID")?

There also was a lot of terminal output similar to the iMac's which I forgot to save, and when I ran checksecurity again it was blank. (Incidentally, the list of setuid programs on Mac OS is a lot longer)

This doesn't happens if I have a previous instance of chromium opened in the usual way, without any flag. In this case if I open another chromium window with the --enable-gpu-rendering flag it's display looks ok, but I can't figure out what's the problem and how could this be fixed if there's solution for it of course.

Jun 14, 2011I'm running a fully updated Fedora 15.In Evolution's calendar, my days are limited to 12 hours: from 0:00 to 11:45, always.Under preferences->Calendar and Tasks->General, I have "day begins" as 07:00, and "day ends" as 23:30. Changing these numbers has no effect whatsoever. Selecting "12 hour" under "time format" also does nothing.I REALLY hope this isn't a deliberate change by the Evolution developers. My days have normally consisted of more than 12 hours since I was three or four (I'd have to call my parents to ask). Jokes aside, what's going on and how do I change this?
