SUSE :: Simulating NIC Fail?
Dec 21, 2010I have setup bonded interfaces but I'm not at the machine to pull a cable - is there a way I can simulate a failure - I've had a look at ip/ipconfig without anything obvious.

View 3 RepliesI have a media server running OES2 on SLES 10.x after the network admin applied a patch to the system the machine will no longer mount the NSS volumes. I am relatively experienced with using linux, but I primarily use red hat and fedora so all these NOvell tools are a bit foriegn to me. I need to get the data off the volumes and restore the drives (ext3) asap. I dont want to screw around with eDirectory or OES2 unless I have to.

View 4 Replies View RelatedWe are having a production setup where we are having one SAN storage and two RHEL machines. Now we have created a SAN LUN, say for example trylun. Now we have mounted the same SAN partition on both the machines of RHEL on the same mountpoint path say for example /trylun. After that we have installed RHEL Cluster suite to create a failover cluster.
Now we will be having one Ingres Database service for which data will be stored in SAN storage LUN mounted on both the machine say for example /trylun. When service on one machine will be down then RHEL Cluster Suite failover cluster will takeover and then it will start the same service on another node and handle the failover. Wether Ingres will run from node 1 or node 2 will not make any difference as both are using shared SAN storage i.e /trylun in our example. So same data storage will be used by both the ingres service on both the servers.
Now I have to simulate the same in my office test environment. But the problem is, in office test environment I will not have SAN server as it is additional cost. And I will have fedora operating system.
So I wanted to know is how can we create a shared file system like SAN in fedora (Is NFS a solution). And after creating the shared file system how can we create a failover cluster in fedora if we do not have Red Hat Cluster Suite.
We have a headless linux server (Debian 5) we use for running integration tests of our web-page code. Among these tests are ones implemented using Selenium, which practically simulates a user browsing our pages and clicking on things. One of these tests is failing now, because it involves starting a flash-based audio player and checking to see whether the progress bar gets displayed properly. The reason this test fails is that there is no way to play the audio, and no sound card on the machine, which has simple webserver hardware.
So, my question would be: Is there a simple way of giving a program the impression that its audio output is being processed, and playback is taking place? I don't have to record the playback, or redirect it or anything like that, just a dummy soundcard, like the dummy X-server we are using, which actually does not need to display stuff.
I have tried using JACK, but it's too complicated, and the documentation does not even answer this very simple question. I also installed alsa on the server; it 'pretends' to run, but when a program tries to play audio, just spews error and debug information having to do with the non-existence of a soundcard.
I have updated to 10.10 and now my ir remote is simulating keyboard arrow keys which is causing problems in applications like Boxee. The weird thing is if I stop lircd it still simulates the keyboard arrow keys.
Does anyone know how to stop the keyboard arrow keys from triggering when the ir remote up, down, left or right buttons are pressed?
(Here are all the IR config files)
hardware.conf
Code:
# /etc/lirc/hardware.conf
#
#Chosen Remote Control
REMOTE="Streamzap PC Remote"
REMOTE_MODULES="lirc_dev streamzap"

Here's a summary of my problem: When using Skype, it's possible to close the gui of the application only. When doing this, the Skype process itself doesn't close; it hides in gnome-panel's notification-area.
Now, when opening the Skype application again (e.g. by clicking on a Skype launcher), Skype starts a whole new process. This is shown to the user as a new Skype tray icon being generated, as well as a new gui window being created.
What I'd like to do is as follows:
I'd like to replace the Skype launcher with a script that would * recognize if there is a Skype process running if yes, bring up that * instance of Skype if not, start Skype normally
Now, I've read some of the source code of gnome-panel to try and see how it's done. From what I've gathered, a button_press_event is bound to some function that probably (am unsure of this) sends a signal of some kind to Skype.
Very similar to this thread, except for Skype and without wmctrl (does not work with Skype): HOWTO: Make a launcher restore an open window (dock-like) [URL]
I bought this laptop several years ago. It had Vista. Just long enough for me to download SUSe, nuke and pave the HD and install Linux. Recently I upgraded from 1 GB to 4 GB of RAM, the maximum that is allowed given the motherboard (based on from what I am able to learn the Intel 945 chipset).
After upgrading to 4 GB, the machine (according to "My Computer") only sees 2.9 GB. I understand that under an earlier version of the BIOS that the machine would not recognize the RAM correctly. Additionally the "My Computer" page lists the display as "Intel 945GM". My problem is that I can find no Linux utility to flash the BIOS on this machine-- Toshiba only provides the BIOS included in an .exe file for either XP or Vista. I am hesitant to use the BIOS for the Intel 945 series motherboards from their site.
I intend to re-install open suse 11.2, 32-bit. On a previous install,suse did not provide a grub entry for ubuntu.My current setup has
ubuntu/root on /dev/sda6
ubuntu/home on /dev/sda7
ubuntu/usr/local on /dev/sda8

I am running memory test on SUSE, Memory test is just writing some patterns into a memory and reading it back in all CPU threads. After a while, when memory test is running in the background , I am trying to reset the system by echo b> /proc/sysrq-trigger command, Upon SUSE warm reset , I am seeing some UNCORRECTABLE MEMORY ERROR in model specific register (MSR : 0x421),
I am seeing this behavior on one of my server which has huge amount of memory.,Have you ever seen this UCECC error when SUSE generates warm reset when memory test in the background ?
I've got several language multimedia CD-Rom's, made for Windows 95/98/98 SE and 2000, that I'm using by means of my daughter's old PC (Win 98 SE O.S.). However I noticed, also, that you can perfectly use them even with Windows Vista. What I'd like to know is if you can use them even with Suse/Novell and (why not?) OpenSuse Linux.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am new to Linux and wow, it did not take me long to run into a huge snag. I am running Suse Linux Enterprise 10 on a laptop and by some strange reason the computer froze from overheating and I was forced to shutdown improperly. Once I restarted it booted right to the command prompt when it usually instead boots to the default user. I managed to get gnome running using the "startx gnome" command. But when gnome loads, none of my normal extentions load like my wireless driver, the sound driver, etc. how to restore gnome to automatically load the default user on start up or fix any other damage I might have done? lol

View 9 Replies View Relatedhow to install a D-Link Access Point on Suse 11.0 or steer me toward documentation that will do that? I configured the device on XP following instruction from this forum and the AP configured perfectly.The AP is plugged directly into the network port on the computer. It *should* function correctly without a router. I tried a restart and Suse has no idea it's there. The computer is currently configured for a wired connection which needs to be changed. The computer itself is going to be used as a small home storage server.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've pre-partitioned my HDD and want to install 11.2 on the second primary partition.However, when using the installer, I can't get Suse to install on the prepared 20gb partition - it keeps insisting it wants to install on the large unallocated section of the drive.
I find the partitioner somewhat hard to use and the answer may be staring me in the face but I can't see it.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo ive got a Suse server up and running. It is connecting to a clearcase server, so i want to mount the remote filesystem as part of startup, as this is generally rebooted when im not around.I would normally add something to /etc/init.d and put the shortcut to it in the appropriate runlevel (in this case 3). Tried that. Didnt work.
Realised the init script needed to have the LBS stuff at the start, so put that in, and used insserv to add the script. I used required-start set to $ALl.This successfully created the init script with S20, and i eneabled it with chkconfig.
I tried to use different version of Python, and followed the Readme like this
./configure
make
make test
