SUSE :: Setting Up NFS Between RedHat And SUSE
Jan 19, 2011I need to setup NFS between a RedHat server and a SUSE client.

View 1 RepliesI'm a Windows SysAdmin and we currently have a half dozen CentOS 5.5 machines at my current job. I also use Fedora 14 at home. I've been trying to get up to speed on Linux and feel like sticking with the RedHat derivatives as opposed to trying a new distro whenever something new comes out has really helped me.
I have a job interview coming up and it sounds like something I'd really like. They have an upgrade of VMWare from 3.5 to 4.1 in the works and virtualization is really my focus right now. Anyway the guy told me that they use SUSE and he really doesn't like RedHat. I don't remember how he described it, but he made it sound like it was too specialized and SUSE is more open.
This is the job description. Experience with MS Windows 2000, 2003 and 2008, Active Directory Architecture, deployment and group policies Red Hat and Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise server (SLES), OES NetWare (On Linux).
Experience with multiple virtualization products including VMware ESX and VMware desktop. Experience with tools used to analyze and perform bulk changes to LDAP directory content including Apache LDAP studio and MS Access. Experience with XML, LDIF, VB script., SSL and secure communications, SLP, DDNS, YAST, RPM, PAM., CRON, Sniffer Pro and Wire Shark . Is going into a SUSE environment going to screw up all the good linux mojo I have going on? I like working in Fedora/CentOS now. Is there a real difference?
I am rebuilding / updating my internal server. It is strange to me that 11.0 will not install on this ASUS M3A78 MB but 11.2 will go through. I am setting up the ntp server and run into new things, ntpdate is not used anymore so you have this long string : sntp -P no -r pool.ntp.org which does the same thing or a couple of other calls that may work. It seems that pool.ntp.org will not work however so I switched to another time server.
pool.ntp.org does work on 11.0 however, it still uses ntpdate atm.
I can use ntpdate to my server from other clients and get the time but I can't use Yast to set it up, it hangs (or maybe it will eventually time out) when you test the server in the gui tool. rcntp ntptimeset comes back with no server reached on the ntp server machine so I am not confident that it will auto update itself, which I think is an issue, the server will not respond to client queries after a day or two.
I bought this laptop several years ago. It had Vista. Just long enough for me to download SUSe, nuke and pave the HD and install Linux. Recently I upgraded from 1 GB to 4 GB of RAM, the maximum that is allowed given the motherboard (based on from what I am able to learn the Intel 945 chipset).
After upgrading to 4 GB, the machine (according to "My Computer") only sees 2.9 GB. I understand that under an earlier version of the BIOS that the machine would not recognize the RAM correctly. Additionally the "My Computer" page lists the display as "Intel 945GM". My problem is that I can find no Linux utility to flash the BIOS on this machine-- Toshiba only provides the BIOS included in an .exe file for either XP or Vista. I am hesitant to use the BIOS for the Intel 945 series motherboards from their site.
I intend to re-install open suse 11.2, 32-bit. On a previous install, suse did not provide a grub entry for ubuntu. My current setup has
ubuntu/root on /dev/sda6
ubuntu/home on /dev/sda7
ubuntu/usr/local on /dev/sda8

I am running memory test on SUSE, Memory test is just writing some patterns into a memory and reading it back in all CPU threads. After a while, when memory test is running in the background , I am trying to reset the system by echo b> /proc/sysrq-trigger command, Upon SUSE warm reset , I am seeing some UNCORRECTABLE MEMORY ERROR in model specific register (MSR : 0x421),
I am seeing this behavior on one of my server which has huge amount of memory.,Have you ever seen this UCECC error when SUSE generates warm reset when memory test in the background ?
I've got several language multimedia CD-Rom's, made for Windows 95/98/98 SE and 2000, that I'm using by means of my daughter's old PC (Win 98 SE O.S.). However I noticed, also, that you can perfectly use them even with Windows Vista. What I'd like to know is if you can use them even with Suse/Novell and (why not?) OpenSuse Linux.

I am accessing a program through X11. My OS is Suse 10.3. However when I access this program, the menu bar title are not letter but a string of characters of "[]". I need to find a way to perform a character setting for X11 using SUSE.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi have installed SUSE 11 recently and have set the domain name and netmask using YaST settings after installation. But, the domain name is empty after rebooting. I have verified this using domainname command from terminal. But, in Network settings it is there.I think the system is not picking up the domain name from YaST settings.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIm relatively new to Linux - just started working with it this week - and Im having some trouble setting up NFS. We have a 12 computer cluster running open SUSE in our lab at school, and I am trying to troubleshoot the NFS system we have created. My basic question is this - I want to find the file that sets whether or not the NFS server and client processes run on setup. Google indicates that in most linux installations, these settings can be found in the /etc/rc.conf file. I cant find this file in open SUSE, so what Im trying to figure out is where I would find the equivalent commands in open SUSE. I am basically trying to find the lines highlighted in this: <http://www.freebsd.org/doc/handbook/network-nfs.html> article are stored. I already know how to enable/disable the NFS server/client using YaST in the GUI, but I would prefer to find the file directly, as changing the settings in the GUI involves plugging a monitor, keyboard, and mouse into each of 12 boxes, and is very time consuming. I can change files straight from the terminal command line - much faster.
Additional background:
We are using NFS in two ways on our cluster - firstly, we have installed the software package (Fluent) on the host computer, and then setup the host to share this folder with the 11 slaves. To do this, we set the host as an NFS server, with the 11 slaves as NFS clients of this folder.
Secondly, we have setup working folders on each of the slaves that we would like to use to store data (each computer has a 1.5TB drive inside). To do this, we have set each of the slaves as an NFS server, sharing the working directory with the host computer, which we setup as an NFS client of each of these 11 working folders.
The problem that I am experiencing is that each of these two things works properly by itself, but when we try to use a computer as both an NFS server and an NFS client at the same time (albeit to different folders), neither works.Any thoughts on how to move forward in troubleshooting this? My current plan of attack is to unplug all of the slaves except for one from the network, and try to get a single slave to communicate properly with the host. Once I get the first slave running, I was going to add additional slaves one at a time until they were all working. Thoughts?
I am new to Linux and wow, it did not take me long to run into a huge snag. I am running Suse Linux Enterprise 10 on a laptop and by some strange reason the computer froze from overheating and I was forced to shutdown improperly. Once I restarted it booted right to the command prompt when it usually instead boots to the default user. I managed to get gnome running using the "startx gnome" command. But when gnome loads, none of my normal extentions load like my wireless driver, the sound driver, etc. how to restore gnome to automatically load the default user on start up or fix any other damage I might have done? lol

View 9 Replies View Relatedhow to install a D-Link Access Point on Suse 11.0 or steer me toward documentation that will do that? I configured the device on XP following instruction from this forum and the AP configured perfectly. The AP is plugged directly into the network port on the computer. It *should* function correctly without a router. I tried a restart and Suse has no idea it's there. The computer is currently configured for a wired connection which needs to be changed. The computer itself is going to be used as a small home storage server.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a disturbing problem with my monitor which goes to sleep (or ??) after few minutes if my comp is not used and most of the time I have to restart my comp.I disabled everything in Powersave , but nothing. I did have that problem in previous versions of SUSE, but somehow, I solved that. I cant remember what I did then.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've pre-partitioned my HDD and want to install 11.2 on the second primary partition. However, when using the installer, I can't get Suse to install on the prepared 20gb partition - it keeps insisting it wants to install on the large unallocated section of the drive.
I find the partitioner somewhat hard to use and the answer may be staring me in the face but I can't see it.
I just installed Suse 11.3 64bit on a new build. My video card is a nvidia gt240. I am using the default drivers. My monitor is a NEC 17" LCD.
When I boot up the screen resolution defaults to 1280x1024. I can go to applications>configure desktop>display and set it to 1024x768, which is my resolution of choice, and it works until I reboot or log out and log back in, then it resets to 1280x1024.
I would like to make 1024x768 the default so I don't have to keep changing it. Is there a way to do this? The output of xrandr looks like this:
$~> xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
DVI-I-1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 338mm x 270mm
1280x1024 60.0 +
1152x864 75.0
1024x768 75.1 70.1* 60.0
[Code]...
Is there something I can change to set a new default resolution?

View 2 Replies View RelatedSo ive got a Suse server up and running. It is connecting to a clearcase server, so i want to mount the remote filesystem as part of startup, as this is generally rebooted when im not around.I would normally add something to /etc/init.d and put the shortcut to it in the appropriate runlevel (in this case 3). Tried that. Didnt work.
Realised the init script needed to have the LBS stuff at the start, so put that in, and used insserv to add the script. I used required-start set to $ALl.This successfully created the init script with S20, and i eneabled it with chkconfig.
I tried to use different version of Python, and followed the Readme like this
./configure
make
make test

What is missing, or is it a permission problem? All the other application icons seem fine.
