Nov 6, 2010I have effects working, but when I try the launcher I get no response and have to Force Quit. I am running Intel graphics so it shouldn't be a driver issue.

Jul 23, 2009Up until KDE4 I could select a different image for each of the 4 virtual desktops. Now I tried Suse11.1 KDE and it seems like there is no such option. I can change the background image allright, but all 4 desktops have the SAME image.

Aug 14, 2010I am a new user, and installed opensuse 11.3 on my desktop pc about a week ago, now the problem with my computer is this that the graphical performance is very slow, I have Intel Pentium 4 2.8 Ghz processor, with 512 mb ram plus a shared graphic card memory of 32 mb on an IBM thinkcentre. The default graphic driver loaded (as seen through YASt hardware information) is i915 while I read somewhere that default driver for this accelerator is intel. I get about 60 FPS on Glx gears while after applying vesa it goes to about 200 FPS. With default driver the CPU usage is head aching. I created a manual xorg.conf file via Xorg -configure command and set the driver intel and then intellegacy with gaining no boost in performance. The glxinfo says 3D Rendering being enabled while KWIN's desktop effects are too slow and laggy. The CPU keeps working at about 70-100% while movies on ..... and vlc/kaffeine are being played unsmoothly. On the same system, the Kubuntu Live 8.04 gives 500 FPS in glxgears.

As my new application software is only supporting 3.6 or greater version of mozilla firefox. i was forced to upgrade or to reinstall my current firefox (version 2.0.0.13). kindly help me and please tell me what is the procedure to install forefox 3.6 or higher version in opensuse 10. i cannot upgrade opensuse 10 to opensuse 11 or 11.3 as my company wont allow me to make modifications in the operating system. i have the latest version of firefox downloaded. the format is tar.gz2 while i am trying to extract it. i find errors in extracting even after extracting successfully i find permission errors.

Feb 24, 2010I have tried to install Opensuse 11.2 (Gnome-Live) and run it as my main OS.When i rebooted after install it would go to login and the desktop wallpaper would come up and that was it. Nothing else loaded, no panels, icons, just the green background.Any suggestions to fix this at all? The setting was for "Desktop Activity Type and I selected "Plain Desktop no Toolbar" When that was applied, suddenly the desktop icons got very small and I tried to set them larger again but that did not work, the settings for Desktop icons from "Configure Desktop" were only applied in the Plasma Dashboard, not the desktop itself

1) during boot process its staing: "Failed services in runlevel 5" and "waring GdmDisplay: display lasted 2.1317348 seconds" and " GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximun number of X display failure reached.
2) /var/log/Xorg.n.log files (n=1-5) "AddScreen/ScreenInit failed for driver 0"
SUSE / Novell :: 11.2 Install: GNOME Desktop Does Not Display
Jan 22, 2010Installed Suse 11.2 from download CD. During the "answering questions" at the beginning of the process, selected Gnome as the desktop enviornment instead of the default KDE. The install process ended with no reported errors. After the final reboot at the process's end, the Gnome logon screen was displayed. After the user name/password were entered, a medium green screen was displayed, but the Gnome desktop was never displayed. The "animal" logo was not on the screen just the green screen and some "filagree" lines, probably part of the logo.
Waited a few minutes, mouse-clocked, pressed various keys and then tried ctrl-alt-del, but no response. Did a power off/on reboot, but the results were the same.
I then did a re-install. Took the KDE default for desktop. At install's end, the KDE desktop appeared and everything works just fine. During this second install, all choices were the same as for the first/Gnome install. Worked from written notes, and not from memory, so am sure that the change to KDE was the only difference.
Couldn't find any information on this anomally via forum and Google searches, hence this post.
This is my first time to use Suse, so could well have "missed something".
SUSE / Novell :: How To Mount And Unmount Floppy Within Desktop / Dolphin Filemanager In KDE 4.1?
Feb 23, 2009Anybody knows how can I mount and unmount a floppy within the desktop and/or dolphin filemanager in KDE 4.1? If I run dolphin I can see a floppy icon on the left, clicking on it seems to activate a reading of the floppy, then I have to go to /media folder and click on /disk folder to display the floppy files, then if a right click on the floppy on dolphin the only option I get is to hide the floppy shortcut, there is no option for unmount the floppy. I tried to make a desktop shortcut to floppy by right clicking on the desktop folder and selecting new device floppy and entering /dev/fd0 on device location, and clicking okay. Even that does not have the unmount command when I right click on the desktop shortcut, so the floppy gets stock in mount state.
also I dont see an applet or the so called plasmanoid when I click on the plasma icon on the right of the task bar and click add widget, on kde 3.5 I have the media applet on the task bar, it worked like a charm, I give a 1000 thanks to the developer of the media applet.
Any ideas on how to mount and unmount my floppy? It is a standard internal floppy, which is connected to the standard floppy controller on the motherboard. The only way to have access to it is logging into kde 3.5 and have the media applet/widget in the taskbar, and then works like a charm, I can mount it or unmount it any time. But I would like to try the new Version 4.1.3 (KDE 4.1.3) "release 72.4" that I'm running. I believe this is the latest from the opensuse 11.1 KDE 4 STABLE repository, so I know I have the latest patches for KDE 4.

Aug 10, 2010I just did an install from opensuse 11.0 to 11.3 using the live web install. After the install, I found that the monitor always reverts to 87hz refresh rate and must be manually adjusted to 60hz. Also, there is no adjustment for the monitor resolution beyond 1024 x 768. I can not find the video card info in yast like it was before. Do I need to add the ati sources in yast? Will that give me a way to adjust the video card properties? Video card is the ati rage. Box is a dell optiplex pentium 3.

Jul 21, 2010I use Linux with a lot of pleasure almost 6 years... after installing Ubuntu 10.04 Itried to install openSuSE on with Ubuntu prepared partitions, 20GB for / and 120 for /home. I have tried 4 times to install SuSE, but I have each time same problem. Suse installer shows instead 20 and 120GB partitions 16 and 104 GB and insallation was failed with message that PC probably was attacked. Before was installed excellent worked OpenSuSE 10.3. I have no idea. It's PC with AMD 3200 64-bit, 1GB DDR, Nvidia7300SE.

Jun 14, 2010I am using openSUSE 10.3 and the pc is DELL Optiplex 780. The network devices is not supported by openSUSE 10.3 but I may have found it's module. But I can't "MAKE INSTALL" it as my installation does not have MAKE command.
I have selected "Install All" during my installation. Linux version is 2.6.22.5-31-default.
What is the package name for the MAKE command? So that I can find it so that I can install it into my openSUSE 10.3?

Mar 15, 2010So I have tried to install from LiveCD and from a LiveUSB stick. Installation goes fine till I get to CUPS daemon. Then I get the wait 30 seconds for CUPS to activate, that never works. Then it pops up with a wait one minute for CUPS to become available. Then it finishes the installation and restarts the system and I get previous installation has failed would you like to retry? It does this over and over again till I get an error with my user name and the mouse and keyboard quit working. I have tried in Failsafe mode, No ACPI, etc. and nothing seems to work. I don't know if it matters but I have an Asus mobo M4A785-M and an AMD Athlon II x3 440 chip. I am just ready to switch to Ubuntu

Sep 7, 2010I have just installed opensuse 11.3 on my box and it refuses to shut down. It shows a tty screen with the message "power down" but wont power off. After searching the web I found no solution until I compared the "halt" scripts of versions 11.3 and 11.2 (they are located in /etc/init.d). Both scripts differ only by a couple of lines that make reference to raid devices. As I am not using any RAID array in my BIOS, I copied my halt script (version 11.2) on top of the version 11.3 halt script and my box started to shut down and power off nicely! At least for me it worked!

Jan 6, 2010I've had this issue since OpenSUSE 10.5 and Firefox 2.x. Now I'm on OpenSUSE 11.2 and Firefox 3.5.6. Here's the issue: I log into various sites to get my bank statements, utility bills, etc. They are all in PDF, and they open up acrobat reader and from there I save the bill as a permanent record. The first one I open opens fine. Subsequent sessions with subsequent providers (banks, whatever) opens up a new window as if to show me the PDF, but no PDF is there. Status on the window shows "done." No error messages. I have to shut firefox down, restart, log in again, and then it downloads fine. It's getting annoying.

I have learned to use "virt-manager" to create a new VM, I have my dom0 running, and I want to add a domU, and I want it to be Kubuntu 9.10. But every attempt to use a Kubuntu install CD results in "not bootable" errors for the install disk. I have booted from the CD, so I know it's not corrupt. I also tried using "xm" manually to create the vm with the following configuration with the same result as in virt-manager:

Sep 16, 2010Once I halt my desktop machine and then boot it back up, applications previously open will open automatically. Is this some sort of KDE4 feature? Or what process is responsible for this? And is there some sort of file constantly updated about open programs and once I reboot, this file is read by KDE during the boot-up and those previously open programs will be started automatically?

Dec 17, 2010i tried to install java jdk, and vlc, but to my surprise everytime i wanted to install a single application, a massive 500MB update appeared along with the 2 applications i wanted to install, then i tried the command line to just install one program, and got rep. errors, and several .lock errors at the command line. after hours of googling i gave up , this distro was recommended because of great laptop support, but it's a hell of trying to install a single program, with fedora i just did su -c 'yum install vim' , or ubuntu sudo apt-get install vim or slackware: installpkg vim.tgz , but opensuse was so bloated whenever i wanted to install a program or two. it is a royal pain to install anything in opensuse how do you guys deal with dependency hell in opensuse?
