SUSE / Novell :: OpenSuse 11.1 KDE Different Desktop Background Image For Each Of The 4 Desktop?
Jul 23, 2009Up until KDE4 I could select a different image for each of the 4 virtual desktops. Now I tried Suse11.1 KDE and it seems like there is no such option. I can change the background image allright, but all 4 desktops have the SAME image.

May 23, 2011How do I get it to display a different desktop background for each desktop? I'm sure I saw this option somewhere, but I can't find it again.
Secondly, it defaults with 4 desktops in a 2X2 grid layout. I changed it to 2, then back to 4 and now it has 4 desktops in a linear layout (1x4). How can I change it back to 2X2?

Feb 11, 2010I've had this problem for a long time (since I first installed 11.2) but I hoped KDE SC 4.4 would fix it for me. Since it didn't, I decided to make a thread about it. I have a really weird problem ─ I can only set svg graphics as desktop backgrounds. I can't put any kind of png/jpg (haven't tried others) picture as a wallpaper. All I get is a black background. The weather backgrounds etc. work perfectly fine. I can create a svgz file in Inkscape and insert a png image in it but that's kind of a stupid workaround for a problem. Has anyone encountered a problem like this?

Aug 14, 2010It has been about a month since I installed openSUSE 11.3 (64bit, Gnome), and overall it is better than 11.2, but I have had some stability issues that I did not have with 11.2.
1. openSUSE 11.3 crashes very often when I change desktop background. I haven't experiment with it but it happens with downloaded images.
2. Changing monitor environment makes openSUSE to freeze. Fresh boot with external monitors connected usually works, but plugging & unplugging monitors usually makes openSUSE freezing. (I have to force power down)
3. Suspend makes openSUSE freeze a lot. Usually one suspension works, if I re-suspend it, it usually freezes.
I was wondering if these are common with 11.3 or I'm the only one who is having this.

Jul 20, 2010i just installed opensuse 11.3 (after being on Mint for couple of years) and really impressed with stability compared to latest Mint 9/Ubuntu10.04.the only issue I have now is I can't turn on desktop effects neither in KDE nor in Gnome.In gnome i can't change compiz seetings at all - the windows freezes after i try to click on 'Enable desktop effects', and that's it. It worked fairly well in ubuntu though.

Jun 11, 2011Just installed openSUSE 11.4 which comes with KDE 4.5. It has taken a while for me to find my way around and I am still trying to change settings so that VLC is default multimedia app rather than Amarok or similar. how to turn off the jerky dimming effect which was being applied when I close a window. Out of interest does anybody know what memory and cpu overhead these effect costs and how many lines of code? More to the point does anybody know who needs them?
When using Dolphin with column view does anybody know how to have the left margin shown rather than the right. As it is now, with long files names, the right hand end of the filename is shown and to see the directories I have to use a slider to scroll back to the left. I do not recall this being the case before. It used to be that the long file name was cut off unless one scrolled. In that way you could see all the directories and when moving files life was simple. Now this is not the case and actions take longer.

So I'm still using the Ubuntu Lucid default bootloader grub2. I can boot up opensuse correctly. the nagging thing is that there's no splash screen show up during the boot process, instead, lines of command are flashing, the console background is also missing and the font under console (tty1-6) is huge. what can I do to have these back to opensuse? the current entry in grub2 for opensuse

Jan 4, 2011After installing gnome-color-chooser for Ubuntu 10.10, I followed all the steps to enable transparent gnome menu. When I logged out and logged back into my user, the gnome panel menu was transparent as It should be however, the desktop background changed color and I cannot change the desktop by right clicking the desktop. If I do right click and try to, the entire desktop and all programs freeze. The mouse works but that is it. Whenever I try to open gnome-color-chooser, I get this error message : ERROR Could not open or create file /home/User/.gtkrc-2.0-gnome-color-chooser. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both gnome color chooser and gnome panel with no luck.

Jun 23, 2011If I do this, there will be two computers I'd like to hook up to the one satellite modem (mine and my moms). What would be best to use, a router or a splitter or...? Will it be very difficult to setup in opensuse 11.3? Any thoughts on the ease of this whole idea? (The area I live in has no cable, no DSL and even cellphone service is so limited I have to walk around in 4 acres to find a spot to get a signal, hence my wanting to move to satellite internet).

I also notice that when I run a program that installs anything that screen dims (gets like this grey opacity I guess) after a period of time. Jun 10, 2011i recently installed ubuntu 11.04 on my toshiba satellite p200-1k8 laptop; with ubuntu the fans were always running at full blast and the laptop would overheat and shut down even though i wasn't using the computer for anything intensive, e.g.just browsing videos. i installed opensuse thinking the problem might have been with ubuntu but in suse as well the fans seem to be running full blast right from start up and the laptop getting quite hot. i've now learnt this is a generic problem with toshiba satellite laptops and linux, something to do with acpi and possibly the ati graphics cards? my gpu is an ati mobility radeon 2600 if thats any help. in windows (which i was last using two days ago) the fans and heat from the laptop were nowhere near this noticeable and i didn't experience this overheating problem just browsing the web.
could anyone recommend any fixes to better the heat management of my laptop on linux (apart from cleaning the fan which i've already tried )?

Jun 13, 2010After updating the repositories, a long update took place... and after completed, my sound card was disabled. I had to reboot the system to have it working again, yet... mp3, mp4, avi files cannot be reproduced at all.
I just want to get rid of Win 7... and I find OpenSuse very stable, solid and friendly. I just installed version 11.2 in this old Toshiba Satellite, as a pilot installation prior the final one in a desktop PC.
