General :: SuSE Always Logs A User In TVM Session?
Mar 16, 2010
I recently installed Suse Linux enterprise Desktop 11 on my box. I created an user and logged in first time into a GNOME session without any problems. Last time I logged in I selected the session as TWM and that got me into the T windows manager just fine. Now when I log out and try to log back into a GNOME session, it will still log me into the TVM sessionI have tried restarting the boxHowever, when I remote log in to the machine it will let me get on the GNOME session just fine. I'm guessing this is probably a really simple fix, however I am a Linux newbie and doing a google search isn't yielding me what I'm looking for.

I've recently installed Fedora 14 (x86_64) on my Alienware m15x laptop which has a NVIDIA GTX 260m onboard. Now I have followed leigh123linux's guide to installing those drivers on F14. The installation is a success and everything seems to be in working order, until the system randomly logs the user out and/or restarts the session with no warning. The screen goes black and the nvidia logo appears and then its back to the login screen again. This can happen many times with no apparent stop insight. This does not happen with the default F14 drivers that come with the installation, I have tried several re installations of the Fedora OS and several re installations of the NVIDIA driver, i still have the same problems.

I am currently in a project to set up an LTSP server with 10 thin clients. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic).
Installing server and booting clients are working fine. Now, according to the need, I have to restrict user session numbers and allow resuming previous user session.
I have achieved to do the first one, but still could not able to setup the second one. As per requirement, if some thin can have power failure, the same session should be restored back. I am confused here, if I need to focus on saving xsessions or saving gnome sessions. I am looking for a concrete solution as I am running out of time.

I'm trying to set up automatic recording of user sessions when they login without their knowledge. I tried sticking the script command into /etc/profile and but that didn't really work. I also tried /etc/bashrc but that had the same affect.I have also tried setting the shell in /etc/passwd to SHELL=/bin/bash /usr/bin/script -q /testing.txt.

Outside of using something like screen, is it possible to 'assume' an active user session under Linux/UNIX?For example, I ssh to my server from home. Then I ssh to it form work. I want to kill the home-spawned session, and "take-over" all of the processes that it had running.

I have a SUSE system that is going wild with the logs. The logs were being rotated at one time but they no longer are. The disk is only 2.0GB, I can't take the server down because this is a live server that requires 24/7 operation and a downtime of no more then 5min per year. I can't drop to single user mode, because this system is accessed by users at all times, even during night. Below you will see that I have one file that refuses to rotate.
Code:
total 1.3G
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 824 2009-06-09 08:16 .

I am new to Linux and wow, it did not take me long to run into a huge snag. I am running Suse Linux Enterprise 10 on a laptop and by some strange reason the computer froze from overheating and I was forced to shutdown improperly. Once I restarted it booted right to the command prompt when it usually instead boots to the default user. I managed to get gnome running using the "startx gnome" command. But when gnome loads, none of my normal extentions load like my wireless driver, the sound driver, etc. how to restore gnome to automatically load the default user on start up or fix any other damage I might have done? lol

I've been trying to figure out how to set up vsftpd on a test machine to emulate the ftp setup on our current ftp server. I was able to track down part of what I needed with the gracious help of poster AlucardZero on this forum, who pointed out that the vsftpd process likely being run via xinetd.
I've managed (or so I thought) to set everything up correctly - but I cannot connect to my test box as the user the ftp client program we're using expects. I can see in the vsftpd log that I'm making contact, but the client program is automatically failing, and attempts to get in from the Windows command line (ftp <ip>) request user and password, then fail out with '530 Login incorrect'.
Everything I've seen online so far indicates that the ftp login for a local user (with vsftpd configuration settings including anonymous_enable=NO and local_enable=YES) should be the same as the 'normal' login for that user, and that the passwords should be the same as well. This is the case on the current FTP server, where a Windows command line login uses the same password as attempting to su into the user in question. On my test machine, I can su into the user in question with the password as well. I simply cannot seem to connect with this user via ftp.
Below are the things I've found so far during my search on the two servers:
Code:
I'm obviously missing something simple, because I've read many posts on this site and others concerning successful setups - I simply haven't managed one on my own. Most of these eventually boiled back down to this howto page, and I've tried to follow the 'add and change user' instructions shown there to no avail.

I installed OpenSUSE and it seems to have installed multiple desktop environments. I only need one environment and don't much care for the flexibility of others as it is a drain on my HDD space.
Problem is that uninstalling one seems to conflict with anothers dependencies and I'm unsure if removing configuration packages with one environment is going to adversely affect another environment. Said packages being like gnome keyring manager or like programs that pertain to interfaces for hardware settings and configuration.
I began to uninstall Gnome, and it just started trying to change everything about Kde4, and when it said Yast and keyring manager I was unsure if I should continue, even letting Yast decide what to do. Numerous of the programs I installed also would have been broken such as gstreamer codecs, google programs, gimp, everything had to change from attempting to remove the Gnome Desktop.
I would prefer to have no remnants of any environment except for KDE.

What is the best way to install software in a linux machine if you dont have root permissions. I know that we can use few variables like PKG_CONFIG_PATH and switches like --prefix with configure to get a software installed in a local directory, but sometimes when there are recursive dependencies it is becoming tough for me to install all the packages manually. Is there a better automated way? What I meant by recursive dependencies is: to install package A, I should install package B, which in turn requires package C to be installed.

Nothing works except shutting off the computer manually.Does anyone know if a cure has been found for this problem by now?

I'm running ubuntu server on a home server which runs samba, ftp, and bittorrent 24/7. there is no need to be using the graphics capabilities of the system by having a desktop environment active 24/7 so to save power when i'm not using the desktop, i stop the kdm/gdm and x. This can be done easily by sudo start/stop kdm/gdm/x etc., but there are users in my home who are unprivileged on this computer but who would still like to use it from time to time and rather than having me login every time and start x for them, I would like to find an automatic solution to the problem.
I tried setuid scripts (which i found out fast didn't work), I tried compiling a small c program (again, setuid then start x) which i couldn't get to work, I also tried looking for a signal to send upstart when a specific user logs in so the appropriate environment could start but couldn't find one. I've only just started getting into upstart scripting and despite what I know.

I'm a bit of a unix noobie trying to manage a small ubuntu server. I want to run a bash script automatically after an ssh user logs in. For example, after they log in and the default welcome message is displayed, I want to run a script that displays some server statistics since the last session. I made an alias to the script, and I could run it manually after I log in, but it's a bit of a hassle. Is there any way I could do this?

We have a backup program that works with HP's ultrium tapes that whenever it's failing it's sending an error to the root's system logs. Now if I run mutt as root I can see the system logs and it's very easy to pinpoint any backup error messages.
Is there any way to copy all these system messages to another user as well so that someone with no root access could run mutt as well and check for these logs daily?

Once I halt my desktop machine and then boot it back up, applications previously open will open automatically. Is this some sort of KDE4 feature? Or what process is responsible for this? And is there some sort of file constantly updated about open programs and once I reboot, this file is read by KDE during the boot-up and those previously open programs will be started automatically?

I have one Linux PC installed with Suse 11.1. In this I have created three users to get access.
Users able access their login from Windows PC via some utilities.
1. Putty
2. Xming
Users able login using both. With Putty there is no GUI. But with Xmings XLaunch they are able to get similar session as Linux Host PC. At this point of time the host linux PC will become too slow in perfarmance.
How to retrict the users not to open similar session by enablin/disabling some setting in Linux PC?

In recent versions of ubuntu, the behavior of gdm and gnome is changed so that if a gnome user doesn't touch the mouse or keyboard for a while, the session is locked, and they have to type their password in order to get back in. I dislike this behavior, because on some of the machines I use and manage, people will walk away and not come back, and then there is no way to log them out. I can switch and log in as a different user, but the AWOL user's session is sitting there eating up resources until the machine is rebooted. I prefer the old behavior, with no locking. Is there any way to get the old behavior back? I've looked through the gdm.conf docs, but can't seem to find anything relevant. This actually seems more like a gnome issue than a gdm issue. I think what's changed is that gnome now invokes a screensaver after a certain amount of time, and that screensaver locks the session.

I installed KDE 4.3.5 on my existing Gnome desktop and i have two users using the computer. Now from Gnome I am accustomed to switch between session very easy and the sessions continue to run. If I use the Switch option from KDE it just looks my screen and does not switch. Is it possible that I miss some programs? I installed it with Yast and used the group option. I am pretty sure that I missed something during the installation.

I recently installed debian 8 stretch with xfce. Since the first time I boot, I have problem starting my X session: from lightdm I always attemped 2 or 3 times before it login (it returned me on lightdm prompt after a short splash screen).
Now it stopped working: the only way I can start xsession is running startx as root. When I try as user it starts the "splash" and return me to the tty with this error message:
Code: Select allServer terminated with error (1). Closing log file(EE)
This is my ~/.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log

And this is my /etc/X11//Xsession
Code: Select all#!/bin/sh

# global Xsession file -- used by display managers and xinit (startx)
# $Id: Xsession 967 2005-12-27 07:20:55Z dnusinow $
[Code] ....
and this the .xsession-errors:
Code: Select allXsession: X session started for lucatastrophe at Tue Mar 29 10:21:09 CEST 2016

openConnection: connect: No such file or directory

dbus-update-activation-environment: setting MAIL=/var/mail/lucatastrophe
[Code] ...
I try to reconfigure Xorg but the Xorg -configure command result in another segmentation fault.
I think that the problem could be related with old configuration (when I install this version of debian I maintain the /home partition and my previous OS was debian 7 with xfce).

Quite some time ago I managed to get sound working perfectly on my DELL Inspiron 1720 under openSUSE 11.2 and KDE 4.3.5. Then suddenly some months ago for one of the four regular users on my system sound stopped working! KMix is always muted after KDE session startup for this user and even if you unmute it there's still absolutely no sound; in particular, the commandspeaker-test -c2 -l5 -twavdoesn't generate any sound (while I do see the printed output which doesn't contain any error messages). Even if I su to root in the very same Konsole window speaker-test remains silent!
Since sound is OK for the three other regular users I've already compared KMix settings as well as System Settings > Multimedia for each of the regular users but found absolutely no differences. BTW: In System Settings > Multimedia I have XINE set as the backend and "PulseAudio" has priority over "HDA Intel (STAC92xx Analog)" for all sort of audio output, and - perhaps needless to mention - all the four regular users are members of group "audio".
