CentOS 5 Networking :: CentOS In Vmware Always Losing Internet?

Apr 21, 2010

I installed CentOS on Vmware server 2.0.2

I took a snapshot of my machine with internet working

If I reboot my machine I lose internet. This makes no sense to me.

I ifconfig eth0 down then ifconfig eth0 up and still no internet

Weird thing

I check ifconfig and my bcast ID is 192.168.2.255 when it is supposed to be 192.168.45.255

(When the internet is working if I check ifconfig the bcast ID is 192.168.2.255)

IF I change my bcast my internet stops working

If I reboot my machine my internet stops working

I checked /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and I see that in my snapshot (where the internet is actually working) the bcast is at 192.168.2.255

Without rebooting if I edit that script and I put it to .45.255 my internet stops working

If I reboot my machine at any time my internet stops working

I have also just realized that I cannot ping my gateway..

CentOS 5 :: 5.3>5.4 Update Gave New CentOS-Base.repo.rpmnew?

Oct 22, 2009

Just checking to be sure. 5.3>5.4 update went without a hitch:) But a message ran about (/etc/yum.repo.d) CentOS-Base.repo.rpmnew. Comparing CentOS-Base.repo with the new one show the 1st has the correct priorities and .rpmnew does not have the correct priorities. Should I remove the *.rpmnew repo after making sure it otherwise is the same as the original CentOS-Base.repo?

CentOS 5 :: CentOS Auto Update Kernel And Reboot System?

Mar 17, 2010

I am an old days RH release user(from 6.x) and just switching back from Debian/Ubuntu to CentOS on some servers, but I can not understand the kernel update strategy currently enabled in CentOS.There are two boxes, with almost identical installation, but recently there was an auto update of kernel on one box. This auto update also seems to issue an auto reboot on the machine, which is unacceptable on server machines.

CentOS 5 :: Kudos To The CentOS Team On 5.4 Update Ease?

Oct 24, 2009

After some testing for a couple of days, I decided to take the plunge and update all my 5.3 machines. Using the recipe from the release notes:

yum clean all
yum update glibc*
yum update yum* rpm* python*
yum clean all
yum update
shutdown -r now

I updated some guinea pigs that I had physical access to and didn't have any issues. So I remotely updated a small farm of LAMP machines that handle a couple of million page views per day. It took each machine approximately 5-6 minutes to download/install/reboot.

Fedora Installation :: Update F11 Without Risk Of Losing Data Info

Nov 24, 2010

I 've some problems with my current version 11 that probably has been fixed in the last version (14). I've updated other non-critical systems through the yum services but from 13 to 14. I've a productive workstation working on ver.11. Is there any possibility to update through yum or other methods through without risks of losses data information?... It's really complicated to backing up Mysql databases, web services and other hundreds things installed. I know, it's convenient carry out a backup but is it a higher risk to dump from 11 to 14 trying to keeping the information inside?

Fedora :: Make 'yum Update' On CentOS Recurring And Automatic?

Dec 10, 2010

I run a few dozen dedicated web servers all running CentOS 5.5. A long time ago when one server was apparently compromised, I was urgently advised to sign in to the server and run "yum update" at least once a week to ensure that everything which I had installed using "yum", would get updated with any recently available updates, including security fixes, and that one reason I might have been hacked before was because I hadn't been doing that.

So, I'm still not sure if that would have prevented the original break-in, or how much this has reduced my chances of being hacked, but I've been faithfully signing in to each server every week for the past few months and running "yum udpate". Most times, this results in a lot of patches being downloaded and applied, so it's clear the machines are not doing it automatically. I figure it's about time to learn how to make the machines do this on their own. Is there a standard way to make "yum update" run automatically, every day, or every week? Yes, I'm sure there are many ways to do it, but is there a single way used by the majority of webmasters of CentOS sites who have automatic updates set up? Googling a bit for "make yum updates automatic" turned up some threads like:

[code]...

in which people describe writing their own custom scripts to do yum update automatically. This seems odd. It seems like the kind of thing that there would be a standard way to turn on. Also, is there a reason that virtually every newly provisioned dedicated server does not have "yum update" set up to recur automatically? If it's true that people break into websites using exploits that have been found in older versions of webservers and other software, and that sometimes these breakins would have been prevented by the newest patches, wouldn't it reduce the number of websites being compromised if the OS had yum updates turned on automatically by default?

CentOS 5 :: Best Way To Update GTK ?

Sep 9, 2009

Months ago, I posted bug reports related to the GTK in CentOS 5.3 (and RHEL 5.3). Seems clear that RH isn't going to issue a fix (RPM) this problem before RHEL 6. (Note: GTK long ago fixed the bug. If RH would issue a patch, I'd be happy. But as I said, I don't think they will.)

Looks like I'll have to fix the problem myself.

What is the best way to update GTK in CentOS 5.3?

I've made one attempt by downloading and attempting to recompile from source. Manged to recompile glib but it doesn't seem to want to install. (make install, completes without any errors but when I try to ./configure pango it says that it can't find a new enough version of glib).
