I am trying yo install the Samba package but not able to as it is failing to connect to RHN network. Do I have to register to RHN in order to get the SAMBA ?

I have installed opensuse 11.4 64 bit on a dell optiplex 755 with 4 gigs of RAM. Everything seems to be functioning but when I try to install new apps through YAST or zypper, it starts to download the package and it's dependencies, but you see it quickly slow down on the download speed until it gets to nothing, and I get the Abort,Retry prompt. The internet connection is fine. I can install apps from the DVD medium.
View 3 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 10.01 Lucid I had a few problems with applications failing to install properly with Synaptic Package Manager which resulted in a slew of launchers in my Applications > Other folder which all delivered error messages. These all had some kind of grey screen icon. I deleted them after uninstalling the applications which failed to install (wine 1.2, wine-gecko 1.2, then later wine 1.0, Wine-gecko 1.0, and winetricks.) I didn't notice that some non-wine applications also were given the grey-screen icon, and accidentally deleted "Archive Mounter." I know that I only deleted the launcher not the application, but don't know how to re-create the launcher in the Applications menu. Would someone...
1 - Right-click on the Applications panel,
2 - Select Edit Menus
3 - Find "Archive Mounter" (probably in "Other" folder)
4 - Select Properties for the launcher, look at the Properties sheet and tell me what the Archive Mounter command is, so I can re-create the launcher manually? And if you could, the path to the icon too
I began the install, Debian 6.0, 64 I get through network config, and everything seems to check out, ifconfig, ping testing to the server it's connecting.I need to look into this further server side tomorrow, but assuming there are no network issues.is there any reason it would not connect to download mirrors? I just did an install on same rack, dell server not IBM, it went flawlessly. IBM is already putting up a fight. So, it's failing to download more content, I end up with no GUI and basic install.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to install debian from a netinst cd. Everything seems to go fine except when the installer needs to connect to a mirror. It doesn't throw up an error, it just hangs a bit and then seems to keep going a lot quicker than i would expect. For example, when installing additional software, it gets stuck downloading the first few files for about 5 mins and then skips ahead and finishes the entire process in about 5 mins.
What I end up with is a very bare bones system when I fist boot into it, without any of the stuff that I had indicated that I wanted to install (ie desktop environment, web server, etc). The Internet connection works and I am able to ping websites including a number of the mirrors I tried during the install. However when using apt-get it just gets stuck trying to connect to the mirror and doesn't go any further.
I'm looking for an easy guide to connect to my home network with Fedora 12. So far I did what I thought was pretty straight forward but I'm not seeing any computers. Here is what I've done

system settings -> advanced -> samba
I set up my two paths that I wanted to be shared when I go to network in Dolphin I'm seeing Network, Network Services and Samba Shares If I click on Network nothing shows, same with Network services, samba shares shows nothing and the bottom reads "unable to find any workgroups on your local network. This might be caused by an enabled firewall"
There are two workgroups which my Ubuntu machine shows fine, workgroup and mshome, I can connect to my roomates and my girlfriends computer no problem within Ubuntu (they are running XP, Vista and Ubuntu).
My USB printer is connected to an OpenSUSE 11.2 desktop on a home network. I shared the printer with samba and can print from a Windows XP notebook connected to the network, but whenever I try to connect a Windows 7 machine, I always get the message that Windows cannot connect to the printer.

I get to the point where the server asks for a password for the user I have on the Susi box but when I enter the password it fails to connect. tried to add the user, password and enabled the user in the samba conf file. The Fedora machine acts like print and file server.But the problem, its the conection time.When i start the machine with fedora, takes like five or more minutes to appear in "My network places" in the windows machines, and if the server dont appear, i cant print and browse in the server files with the windows machines.I can browse in the internal network files (Windows folders) from fedora all the time, i have internet conection and with the internal network all the time, but the server just dont appear in the network places in the windows machines when i just start the server.
I check the samba status when i start (in the terminal), and its running.And i have a control program called "Control of Ciber", this program connect with the "Slaves" terminals and the conection appear in the server, but when i just turn on the server, the machines appear offline, and they connect after the same time taken for the server to appear in "My network places" in windows.I dont know if have a relation, but i cant open the share folders of the fedora machine in the windows computers, a error dialog appear (Privileges problem), and i just cant see the files in the folder.I give administrator privileges to everyone in this particular shared folder (Chmod 775), and i put the "Security = share" in the samba file. This issues dont happen in debian or ubuntu with the same configuration
I have a fresh install of ubuntu. I am trying to load some new packages but I think I need internet connection. The issue is I cannot connect to the internet I think I need to setup a network package so I can connect to the internet? This is the first time I have used linux.

I am running a 64bit 10.10 with gnome. Its pretty much a fresh install. I saw a project called CAINE, it looked neat so I'd thought I'd give it a try, something in the installation mucked up. Now when I open the Software center I get a message telling me "Items can no be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired" I click repair and I get this error message: E:I wasn't able to locate file for the caine-from-deb package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package.:So I thought I'd give it a go using synaptic package manager, it gives me these error messages: E: caine: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 2 E: caine-from-deb: subprocess installed post-removal script returned error exit status 2.I am currently unable to install or update any software at the moment so I really need help to get this fixed.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am relatively new at Linux and am having some problems with an install of openSUSE 11.2. I installed 11.2 on my Thinkpad X31 dual boot with WinXP. It seems to work very well except the network. I looked up swerdna's instructions on setting network cards up. I used YaST to try and set the system up as described in swerdna's instructions. Everything looks fine my network card and wireless card show up in the overview settings screen and everything sets up fine. But when I exit YaST the network doest show up no icon in the system tray and it doesn't even try to connect.
I did go into hardware to see if it was identifying my hardware and my network card shows up as "Thinkpad R40" and the wireless shows up as Cisco Aironet Wireless 802.11b. As far as I know this is correct. I have tried three other distro's and this one has gotten the closest to working so far.
I get "unable to open file: /etc/samba/dhcp.conf" messages in /var/log/samba/log.* worked perfectly fine in 11.3. permissions are 755 on /etc/samba and all files are 644 or 600 in the directory. Starting manually gives same result. My 11.2 and 11.3 machines continue to work. this is a weird one and I don't see any posts relating to this. For other uses, the machine seems ok.

Also, on my opensuse laptop I have installed XP as virtual OS in vmware player.I have setup samba using this guide that was given to me on this forum.From opensuse laptop I can see my Win 7 desktop, but cant log in. I enter Win 7 username and password, but it doesn't let me in.
Now, when I start XP trough vmware I can see win 7 desktop and connect it with username and password and browse my shares. On laptop, file sharing works both ways between host opensuse ang guest XP.On second desktop computer with XP, and I can connect to it from opensuse laptop normally.
I am unable to connect to internet using my cell phone(sony ericsson X1i xperia). When i connect from wired internet it connects without a problem. What settings should i change/ programmes to execute? Thank u in unticipation

OKay i installed the brand new OPENSUSE DVD, everything installed ok, but then i got to the internet problem, well connection problem. 1. I am going through a router to a att dsl modem. so i use a static ip as my desktop and my xbox 360 are both connected and both working fine, the router is a linksys etherfast cable/dsl router. my labtop is a acer with a realtek family Ethernet series model. so i tried just about everything and nothing works, so i switched to traditional and turned off the network manager, and it tried to load smpdd or something and couldnt get it from the dvd drive that was mounted even though i had used the drive 10 minutes ago to INSTALL THE OS. so them i went back to square one and tried a reinstall, but when i try to setup the connection on the install, the ip static doesnt work, i even plugged the thing directly into the modem and went to automatic dhcp settings- and still nothing.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.
I have recently installed CentOS onto an old machine to get it up and running as a basic web/mail server. Originally the Network Interface worked ok, however I have been editing /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 to try and set the IP address to be static.Now when I run the 'service network restart' command it won't bring the eth0 interface up and comes up with the following errors;
ifcfg-eth0 Line 3 DEVICE: command not found
missing config file ifcfg-ifcfg-eth0
It doesn't seem to like any of the command words, even though most of these were in the original file that worked and the ones I added to do static I have commented out.
I've got a Linksys WRT54G router with the latest firmware. I've got an HP laptop connecting wirelessly and my main box connecting wirelessly with a Linksys WMP54G card. (As an aside, I used to have another box too with the same wireless card). Both are set up with a static IP. Both can access the Internet just fine. The router is on the main floor. My main box is in the basement. Both boxes are running fully patched versions of Slackware64 13.1. sshd is running on both.
I like to ssh into the other box when there's a security update or to copy a file from one computer to the other, etc. The problem is that I can't do that all the time. Even if the laptop is connected to the network and accessing the Internet, on my main box ssh will still "say ssh: connect to host ***** port 22: No route to host". It is my understanding that if I ssh in, it is accessing the other computer directly and not going through the router. What would cause this? Even if I bring the laptop within four feet of my computer, it still can't connect.
There doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to when it will connect and when it wont. Sometimes I can access it just fine then about five minutes later I can't.
I tried fix I pointed here http://fedoramobile.org/Members/MrHappy/troubleshootingNetworkManager fails to see wireless networks with Intel 3945 chipsets(solution deals with the kernel module not with NetworkManager)but nothing to do. My actual problem is I can't see my wireless network but I see just those of my neighbours.I know mine is working because I can connect to using a Mac and windows.

I just finished a brand new install of 11.2 on a workstation and it can't connect to the internet at all. I can ping Google and I can ping devices on my local network but I can't browse any web pages. I am able to ping the workstation with my windows 7 workstation. I tried disabling the firewall. I have it set to use DHCP.
UPDATE:
I can connect to google via IP. So it appears to be a DNS type issue, is there some settings I am missing?
