I fallowed the directions on How to Setup a VPN (PPTP) Server on Debian Linux and How to Setup a Split Tunnel VPN (PPTP) Client on Ubuntu 10.04 to set up a LAN vpn, but it keeps on failing to connect. Can it do a LAN VPN? What else can I install that has an easy setup.

I am unable to connect to internet using my cell phone(sony ericsson X1i xperia). When i connect from wired internet it connects without a problem. What settings should i change/ programmes to execute? Thank u in unticipation
I began the install, Debian 6.0, 64 I get through network config, and everything seems to check out, ifconfig, ping testing to the server it's connecting.I need to look into this further server side tomorrow, but assuming there are no network issues.is there any reason it would not connect to download mirrors? I just did an install on same rack, dell server not IBM, it went flawlessly. IBM is already putting up a fight. So, it's failing to download more content, I end up with no GUI and basic install.
I am trying yo install the Samba package but not able to as it is failing to connect to RHN network. Do I have to register to RHN in order to get the SAMBA ?
I am trying to install debian from a netinst cd. Everything seems to go fine except when the installer needs to connect to a mirror. It doesn't throw up an error, it just hangs a bit and then seems to keep going a lot quicker than i would expect. For example, when installing additional software, it gets stuck downloading the first few files for about 5 mins and then skips ahead and finishes the entire process in about 5 mins.
What I end up with is a very bare bones system when I fist boot into it, without any of the stuff that I had indicated that I wanted to install (ie desktop environment, web server, etc). The Internet connection works and I am able to ping websites including a number of the mirrors I tried during the install. However when using apt-get it just gets stuck trying to connect to the mirror and doesn't go any further.
I need to setup a Linux VPN server at work for resources' sharing, I currently have a server running CentOS 5.4, and tried endless tutorials on the web, but to no avail, and can't find where the logs are kept for the VPN server to check where the error is. But all my attempts to try to connect keep failing.
recently logging in become a bit unreliable - i thought i was mis-typing the passwords but on closer looking the passwords were ok (faulty passwords produces "authentication failure) Using the correct passwords the screen blanks for a second and then returns to the list of possible logins. I cannot log in except as one of the children - could this be because their logins have been used less often and less recently Everything was working well and I have not knowingly changed anything except the passwords after the problems started in order to solve what i thought was a simple mis-typing problem
I can log in as the children but their logins obviously do not have permission to do much I also have a bootable puppy CD Unfortunately I am also a total noob but determined not to backslide into XP because up to now Ubuntu has been fantastic
I am attempting to install Ubuntu 64-bit and it keeps failing. This is my first 64-bit system, and have not had problems with installing x86 Ubuntu in the past. When the full install failed, I tried installing it within Windows and that also failed. I've attached the log from that attempt in this post (had to trim it down to fit the file limit though). I don't know if these are the same errors I was getting on full install as I didn't write those errors down...I can try again and post them if needed though.
So I downloaded 10.10 x86 ISO, MD5'd it and it all looks okay. I am using a decent LITEon DVD-RW drive (no errors before with ISOs) and using DeepBurner (also no errors before) and it keeps failing at 88% :
I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 and need to setup VPN connections to clients.
After configuring one of the vpn connections, I tried to connect but the connection fails with no specific errors.
Looking at the /var/log/messages file I get the entries as follows: ay 20 13:52:28 machielr-laptop pppd[3362]: Plugin /usr/lib/pppd/2.4.5//nm-pptp-pppd-plugin.so loaded. May 20 13:52:28 machielr-laptop pppd[3362]: pppd 2.4.5 started by root, uid 0 May 20 13:52:28 machielr-laptop pppd[3362]: Using interface ppp0
I have been FRUSTRATINGLY trying to upgrade to 10.04 because I was impressed with it, however, as I have predicted, it was a headache. In all actuality, it is WORSE than a headache. Both my desktop and laptop are now decommissioned, (I have Windows 7 on the 2nd laptop, and since Ubuntu/GRUB hasn't installed completely, it won't boot--I have to fix that TOO) leaving me to depend on an old Pentium III in the closet to download and burn CD images, which is STILL failing. Unfortunately, I have burned 9.10 on a rewritable CD, which I erased long ago. I have NO computer now, other than the old Pentium III which was sitting in a closet. I am tired and want to go to sleep, but I am the kind of person who finishes things that were started.
My problem is that I have downloaded (and burned to a CD) Ubuntu 10.04 TWICE, because it's failed to install. I thought that the ISO was corrupted, so I downloaded it and installed it AGAIN. Same thing. I tried making a Live USB Flashdrive install--same old, same old. It's 12:00 MIDNIGHT (Pacific time) and I can't bear to stay up this long like some of you young ones can. Thank goodness for caffeine
I KNEW that I shouldn't have done this, but I went ahead and proceeded to "upgrade". Well, the actual upgrade (thru Ubuntu Update tool) failed, so I decided to do a clean install. Thought that the process, from start to finish, would take 30-40 minutes, but was I wrong! I have been stuck with this issue since 7 P.M.!
Well, to cut to the chase, is anyone else having issues with burning/installing from their own CDs? This Pentium III is only running Fedora Core 6 with 512MB of memory, so it can get a download/burn job done OK. I am using the K3b burner in Fedora and no errors regarding a corrupted ISO appear. Why then, won't it install, after downloading and burning two separate ISOs?
I have created a VPN through network manager to a Windows 2003 server.
However when I try connecting it fails every time, I have tested with a windows XP client and this works so this would indicate I am doing something wrong in the network manager configuration.
extract some data off a failing drive the other day. I plugged it in, but got no response in windows or linux (partition is ntfs), but it does appear in the bios and /dev (though the hdd hung most linux liveCDs except rescue remix 9.04). I tried to analyze the drive, and found good smart data, so I figured there were just a few bad blocks in critical places. I ran spinrite against it in level 2 mode. the process crawled (40MB after 2 hours) and it updated the smart data to reflect many many reallocated sectors, putting the drive into a failing state as far as smart is concerned. so, now, in a last ditch effort I am turning to ddrescue to try to get an image of the drive. it's been running about 17 hours now, and has done several complete passes through "Splitting error areas".
here is my current output:
Code:
Disk /dev/sdb: 320.0 GB, 320072933376 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
[code]....
have I done all I can? can I in good conscious declare this a lost cause? I do have an image from a prior run of ddrescue, with 826 MB of data.
edit: I resumed the task from log, and now it is reporting the err size as 9223 PB. since the drive is a 320GB, I find that a bit odd.
I installed the latest Ubuntu last night and have some issues with Unity. Firstly, when I open Deluge (which I've been using for about a year now) and click to close it, I can't seem to reopen it. Usually when I clicked the close button it didn't close Deluge, it merely moved it to the background.Secondly, when I open some programs (it has happened with Thunderbird, Compiz and the Help file), the top menu bar falls away. I don't mean it disappears in full screen (as it should), I mean it goes transparent and I can't click on it anymore after closing said software.
Finally, a little thing that is bothering me and I hope I'm not the only one: is there any way to move the new dock/panel to another side of the screen? I hate it on the left of the screen and I find it quite annoying that I can't fully customise it. For instance, the icons are way too big and I can only reduce them down to 32px using compiz. I find it fairly hard to navigate ubuntu now that I don't have direct access to all my folders and programs (yes, there is the dash, but that's actually more effort in my opinion...) I also can't add folders like my 'Downloads' folder. Is there some way of better customising Unity or some piece of software that might let me go into the finer details? I am very much an Ubuntu noob, so it would have to be something that's fairly user friendly
I'm running Xmonad and just recently it has stopped responding. None of my shortcuts are working at all. So I deleted my ~/.xmonad/xmoand.hs file, and still no luck. So I decided to log in as root and Xmonad works perfectly. Anyone know why Xmonad isn't working under my normal user? Is there a button i accidently pressed turning off the mod key?I was just browsing the web, then after I closed my browser nothing has been working, even after reboot.
had a really good reliable machine going with 10.10, but for some reason upon powering up this morning is failing to boot. Any ideas on how to fix this problem greatly appreciated, i have already tried dropping to root shell un-installing reinstalling the gnome desktop but that doesn't appear to be the problem.
For some reason I cannot update software or repositories.Failed to fetch etc. Thought trying a different mirror may help, where do I locate this. okay so i changed mirrors. then sudo dpkg --configure -a sudo apt-get clean
and got
W: Failed to fetch http://packages.medibuntu.org/dists/...86/Packages.gz Unable to connect to packages.medibuntu.org:http:
W: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. Do I need to alter my sources list. This wasn't a problem until now
I recently fixed a problem i had with Ubuntu which was the missing title bars but as soon as i enabled them on Compiz, my Desktop switcher app will not work. I've tried removing it and re-applying it but this does not solve the problem. Its there, in all its glory, but i cant click any of the other desktops it seems unresponsive when im left-clicking it but it responds and works fine showing blips of what it is or even adding or deleting rows and columns is optional.I know this happened immediatly following the compiz change so it has something to do with that and i think it might only have 1 desktop that it knows of because i can highlight desktop 4 and it still says 1, but im probably wrong.
I have 4 1.5 TB Seagate drives configured in RAID 5 via mdadm on Karmic. It seems that after a while, one drive always drops out of the array. It's a brand new drive, and after a reboot, it will come back in and rebuild just fine, so somehow I doubt the drive is actually failing. Here's a dmesg snip. The mounting that happens at the top is the mounting of the array, and as you can see, after a while, there is some kind of write failure.

I have been using Ubuntu 10.04 (32 bit) as a headless workstation, running a VNC screen. Worked perfectly for about 3 weeks, then suddenly, I lost the Drag and Drop capability, for all applications.
For example:
Dragging and dropping to move items on the desktop does not work. The item simply pops back to the original location. Dragging and dropping to move items from one folder to another does not work. Same behavior -- the item just pops back to the original location. Dragging and dropping Bookmarks in Firefox does not work. The attempted Drag and Drop is ignored. Copy and paste still works fine. The problem does NOT occur when using an attached monitor (primary display screen :0).
I suspected that the changed behavior was caused by an update (from Ubuntu Update Manager). I confirmed this with the following:
Reinstalled Ubuntu 10.04 fresh from the live cd. Configured minimal networking and installed VNC server. Tested Drag and drop -- works okay Applied pending updates (116) from Ubuntu Update Manager Tested Drag and drop -- not working
I am using vnc4server and openssh-server installed from the repositories using Synaptic.
The Windows Disc Image Burner, after attempting to burn the ISO file, will prompt me that the burn was unsuccessful. It then gives me the error code of 0x80004005. I've re-downloaded the file twice and attempted to burn it twice, but to the same results. A
I have several NFS entries in my /etc/fstab file. Each entry generates an error during boot (from /var/log/boot.log):mount.nfs: DNS resolution failed for macpro.dpc: Name or service not known mountall: mount /mnt/BaseLines [656] terminated with status 32
This occurs even if I specify an IP address in fstab rather than a host name. I was really surprised by that. The odd thing is that by the time the system is up, not only is DNS working as expected, but the NFS shares are mounted as expected. I'd just ignore it for now, accept that it prevents Apache from starting since some of the server's files live on the NFS shares (this is a development system). It appears that the DNS resolver isn't running when the mounts are attempted and that they are attempted again later, after the resolver is running.
I did an $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get upgrade....
while upgrading packages in my ubuntu 10.4 i m receiving following exception

I just got a macbook pro 7.1, and after trying to install several times and failing - thought I should come here. I thought I read somewhere that the kernel is not compatible with this hardware, but I simply refuse to believe it.
I got this working om my laptop but on my desktop this keeps going wrong, its an upgraded system to 10.04. Made a standard pptp connection using network-manager (and the connection is 100% fine, working on laptop and on windoooz machine) This is syslog any ideas, i reinstalled network-manager-pptp and pptp-gnome, but no go no go..
