Ubuntu Multimedia :: Switch Output To USB Speakers Automatically
Oct 20, 2010
In 10.04 when i plugged my HiFi into a USB port audio would automatically switch to play out of it.Now in 10.10 i need to plug my hifi in then go to 'sound preferences'>'output' and select USB codec as my output AND unmute the device.Does anyone know of a way to revert to 10.04 behaviour?

every time I want to listen music from my headphones I have to do like:
1. Main menu >> System >> Preferences >> Sound >>> Output >>>> Connector >>>>> Analog Headphones
and vice versa.
I have no experience in bash scripting and I have no idea how to find automatic solution to my problem.
The problem in pseudo-code:
Begin
if
headset plugged in front jack
then Connector := Analog Headphones
else
Connector := Analog Output
End

I don't want to monitor my inputs. In other words: My microphone input plays through my speakers, adding a lot of undesirable noise from the mic. I can mute the mic inputs in alsamixer and/or in the Pulse volume control. This works to get the mic out of the speakers--but it also mutes my mic entirely, so I cannot record audio or use Google Talk. I want the microphone muted in my output, but available to my apps.
(I try to get on the Pulse bandwagon but it is so hard--I thought this was exactly what it was supposed to do, give easy mixing control over inputs and outputs. But I have to search for "fixes" with every single Ubuntu release for two years now, ever since it was first included. Ok, venting over, time to get it working!)

I just installed 10.10 and I'm having an issue where sound outputs from the headphones and my speakers simultaneously, and the volume control controls both outputs rather than one of them individually. This has been asked about before at this thread, but none of the solutions I've tried from there have worked. I tried installing linuxant, but it just killed my sound altogether despite uninstalling it afterward. I tried updating the Linux audio modules as per this page but to no avail.I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 (64-bit) on my own custom built desktop, which for what it's worth, contains this motherboard.

I'm still on UBUNTUO 9.04 atm - I'm getting myself a Logitech USB headset. I plugged it in, and immediately I see this in dmesg
[ 7015.732141] input: Logitech Logitech USB Headset as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.1/usb4/4-2/4-2:1.3/input/input11[ 7015.732234] generic-usb 0003:046D:0A0B.0006: input,hidraw3: USB HID v1.00 Device [Logitech Logitech USB Headset] on usb-0000:00:1a.1-2/input3 [ 7280.088017] usb 1-3: reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3
Which is fantastic. Tested this on all kind of audio and I can hear them fine. So headset is working wonders. Except, everytime I want to switch the output from between the speaker and the headset, I have to go System > Preference > Sound > output tab > click on the switch. Which is fine, but the switching procedure via GUI is very arduous. Is there a way to to do this via the command line, if so I can bind it to a hotkey and therefore with one hotkey I will be able to switch between headset vs my speaker?

I'm using a Hama Voiis bluetooth audio device connected to my stereo. Both my girlfriend (running 9.10) and me (10.4) can pair with, connect to and stream audio from whatever application we use to the device. However to do so requires a couple of manual steps which I'd like to optimise.
First it's necessary to manually connect to device, since we both want to stream to this, connecting manually seems the best since I suppose only one can connect at any one time. Once connected it's necessary to select "Output" in "Sound Preferences" in order to use the keyboard or multimedia keys to change the volume. This latter step is a little annoying since it has to be done every time we connect. Does anyone have a solution that automatically makes this change when connecting?

I have this file:Code:vid-gd-19940626-peggy.rmI would like to extract the audio and copy to a file to burn on a CD.'pitivi' will load the file and show the audio timeline. But I can not find a save or copy button.'vlc' will play the file but I can not find how to seperate/save the audio.I found a 'ffmpeg' that is suppose to read whatever is being sent to your speakers.Code:ffmpeg -f oss -i /dev/dsp -f video4linux2 out.wavThis produce a file that 'mplayer', 'vlc', 'audacity' will load but it is empty of useful data. Black screen only. This is the second week I have worked on this. Either I'm googling for the wrong words or what I'm reading, I don't understand.

Ever since I installed Debian, when I plug in the headphones the sound goes out through both the headphones and the speakers (they aren't blocked). I don't mind it that much, but could it be potentially damaging to my sound hardware?

I want to create a small simple application that will let me change the Output of the Sounds option to go from speakers to my headphones. I can do this easily enough through System --> Preferences --> Sound, but I'd like to create a GUI front end for me to do this. This is more as a learning exercise than anything else. What is the best language for me to build the windows to do this? Also, how do I find the commands to let me toggle the sound settings? Where are they documented? I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.

i'm running fedora 12 on a dell dimension 4600. audio seems to work reasonably well for things like flash animation but i cannot for the life of me figure out how to route line-in audio through the system for output to my external speakers. on the sound preferences application on the gnome desktop: if i select the hardware tab and analog stereo input is selected, then i go to the input tab and have analog line-in selected, i see the v-u meter above moving around as though there is actually an input. [list]
but, i hear no sound. the output tab shows "dummy output" with no other choices. to get audio working for videos and other flash sites, i have to change to hardware->analog surround 5.0 output. such documentation as i have been able to find doesn't seem to describe my setup well, and in any case, i find all this fidgeting with hardware configurations an immense step back from the old alsa software. if this is going to be the future of linux audio, can i say, please, no?

I'm a new user of Linux and just recently installed Debian 8 on my computer, an Emachines W3118. My problem is that the audio went out a couple of days ago and I don't know WHY it went out, no audio, and HOW to get it back on. I tried several command line methods that didn't work, probably because they didn't completely relate to the problem with me being a Linux beginner and all. When I manually turn the knob on the speaker up, I can hear noise to where the speakers sound like they're physically operational, but with no output or input.

I have a laptop that I use in three environments with different monitor setups.
1) At work, I have a 1280x1024 second monitor.
2) At home, I have a 1920x1080 second monitor.
3) In meetings and other places I have no second monitor.
Whenever I switch between these setups, which is at least several times each day, I have to manually change the monitor configuration. I use the nvidia-settings tools.
Granted, it only takes a few seconds. Is there a way to make the system smart enough to automatically detect when a monitor is added or removed, know *which* monitor is attached, and reconfigure the resolution and monitor layouts the way I want them?

Using Ubuntu Linux for some years now I love CUPS functionality to switch on the printer (at least my USB connected HP Deskjet) automatically when a new print job has been submitted to CUPS. This does not work in Fedora 15? Does anyone know how to enable this or has the new CUPS or any other component lost this functionality?

I've been tasked with setting up a wall board display monitor for our monitoring applications and it's got to look good! I was hoping to use opensuse 11.4 & the KDE desktop effect of the cube and I'm trying to find a way to make the screens rotate in a timed manner.
Is this possible and if not can anyone suggest a good way to switch between multiple displays automatically?

I've got an eeePC with a really tiny monitor, so whenever I go (home, faculty, parent's home, friend's home, ...) I attach it to any external monitor I can find.
If it matters my system is like this:
Archlinux
Linux 2.6.36
Xorg 7.6
X server 1.9.2
Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (fully accelerated by intel modules)
When I boot up the system, it uses the integrated monitor (LVDS1) only, and I have to manually manually switch to the external monitor (VGA1) using xrandr.
Is it possible to configure my Xorg (or whatever) so that it uses the VGA1 output if present?

I'm running Debian Lenny, most of the time with KDE 3.5.10. I've got a great old stereo that I'd like to pump my audio through. It sounds fantastic, but it only seems to have one channel. Is there a way I could all my audio output to be mono so that I can get all of the music on one track? I guess there's probably a stereo to mono adapter that will do the trick, but if I can save the trip to Radio Shack, so much the better, right?

I've got cups-pdf installed and working fine to print to PDF.
What I find kind of annoying is that it prints silently to ~/PDF with an automatic filename and with no feedback when it is done printing. So I have to monitor that directory manually for when a new file shows up.
What I'd like to have when I print to PDF is the output of cups-pdf piped to a pdf reader (like okular, in my case) which would open automatically when the printing is done so I can review the results and save or discard them.
I've looked through the options and tried to find documentation on cups-pdf, but I haven't found a way to make this happen yet.
